Welcome to the 2015 Canadian College Finals Rodeo!
On behalf of Northlands staff and volunteers, we hope you enjoy this evening’s rodeo
performance put on by some of the finest collegiate rodeo athletes in Western Canada!
Rodeo is one of the few sports that is as thrilling to watch as it is to compete. For the college
aged competitors saddling-up this evening, there is no greater exhilaration than competing
for a national championship in front of a live audience. At Northlands, we are proud to
support the young competitors of the Canadian College Finals Rodeo realize their dreams
on the road to becoming professional rodeo athletes.
Whether this is your first Canadian College Finals Rodeo or you have been coming for years,
you are in for one wild ride. As Edmonton’s entertainment destination, all of the events
at Northlands are dedicated to serving as a gathering point for making some of the best
memories of your life – and at the CCFR, we do that with good old western hospitality.
The show simply wouldn’t go on if it weren’t for the continued efforts of our volunteers, staff
and valued partners who have made outstanding contributions to this event and the rodeo
community in Alberta. Thank you for helping us preserve an important part of our heritage.
Good luck to all of the competitors and enjoy the show!
Tim Reid, President & CEO, Northlands
Greetings from the Canadian Intercollegiate Rodeo Association (CIRA) President.
On behalf of the Canadian Intercollegiate Rodeo Association, welcome to the Canadian
College Finals Rodeo (CCFR) – where these student athletes are about to put on one heck
of a show for you!
Tonight, you will witness 120 athletes representing 18 schools from across Western Canada
competing for championship buckles in 10 events. For many of these athletes competing
in the CCFR, each buck, turn around a barrel and tie-down represents the realization of a
dream to rise the ranks of pro-rodeo in Canada. This is a dream that many college athletes
can relate to, whether that be competing in collegiate football, hockey or even chess…but
it just so happens that the students here tonight are most comfortable in the dirt.
Thank you to our sponsors and fans for continuing to support the dreams of student rodeo
athletes in our province. You are the reason we are here to compete in front of you today.
Congratulations and good luck to all of this year’s finalists. I know how hard you have worked
to get here and I am proud to call you friends, classmates and competitors.
Enjoy the ride!
Jordan Ness, 2014-2015 CIRA President

ANTHEM SINGERS
EMMA RIZKO
17 year-old Emma Rizko resides in Devon, twenty minutes outside of Edmonton. She
started performing for the first time in grade two and has been singing publicly for
the past four years. Her favourite genres to perform currently include jazz, classical,
R&B/soul and the blues. She is an avid theatre enthusiast and plans to study drama
for her university degree.
JULIA HARRINGTON
Singer / Songwriter Julia Harrington has been dazzling audiences with her unique
country sound and natural stage presence since she was 9 years old. Performing
for upwards of 15,000 people on numerous occasions, her ability to connect with
an audience proves to be effortless. Her humble demeanor makes her an artist to
watch with a bright future ahead. She is currently writing for her debut album and
will be visiting Nashville later this year.
SAGE JEPSON & KIRA ROMANS
Sage Jepson and Kira Romans are both passionate musical theatre actors. They
are both seasoned triple threat (singing, dancing & acting) members of St. Albert
Children’s Theatre. Sage is 14 and attends Victoria School of the Arts. Kira is 16
and attends Bellerose Composite High School. They both have participated in
numerous vocal competitions and performed together many times. Last summer
they placed third in the K-Days Talent Search, where they performed “This World
Will Remember Us” from Bonnie and Clyde.
5
Every event plays its own special part in making a rodeo a thrilling spectacle for everyone involved—competitors, judges,
volunteers and (especially) the audience. Speed, grace, strength, timing and skill unite all of these different contests
together—each requires their own form dedication, but they all take the same amount of heart.
BAREBACK BRONC RIDING
In this most physically demanding event in rodeo, only
a leather hand holds a piece of rigging that separates
the rider from the bucking horse. If the rider lasts all 8
seconds, they are judged on technique, spurring and
grace under pressure.
SADDLE BRONC RIDING
Rhythm is the key to this event. Contestants are judged
similar to the Bronc riding, only the rider is supported by
a saddle and they must hold on to the reigns and stirrups
as well as spurring—but don’t think that makes it easier!
Saddle Bronc is considered by many to be the most
difficult event for any rider to master.
BARREL RACING
This event is judged by one criteria—the time clock. A
tenth of a second can mean the difference between first
and second place as riders race in a clover-leaf pattern,
knowing that a turned over barrel will add 5 seconds to
their time.
STEER WRESTLING
Lean from your galloping horse, grab a 600 lb steer by
the horns, wrestle it to the ground and twist its head and
four legs in the same direction. Sound impossible? The
world record is 2.4 seconds! But be sure not to break the
timing barrier or a 10 second penalty will be added to the
contestant time.
BULL RIDING
Get on a 2000 lb bull, raise one hand up in the air and the
other tight on the rope and do everything you can to stay
on for 8 seconds. This is one event that you KNOW began
as a dare, and is by far the most dangerous event in rodeo.
6
CALF ROPING
The rider ropes a running calf from his horse, jumps off,
gets it to the ground, ties three legs and throws his hands
up to show he’s done. He then runs back to his horse,
waits six seconds and if the calf is still where he left it, he
gets his finished time.
TEAM ROPING
Two riders—a header and a heeler—go after a steer.
The header ropes the horns and then ties the rope to his
saddle to turn the animal to its left. Once that is done, the
heeler ropes the animal’s heels. It’s a coordinated effort
that depends as much on the skill of the horses as the
riders. A 5 second penalty is added if only one heel is
roped and a 10 second penalty if the barrier is broke.
POLE BENDING
6 poles are placed 21 ft apart from each other in a straight
line. Each rider must weave their way through the pattern
as fast as they can—earning a 5 second penalty for each
pole they knock over.
BREAKAWAY ROPING
This variation of Calf Roping saves the rider the effort of
getting off their horse and tying the animal down. Instead
the finished time is based on the moment when the roped
calf pulls the rope taut enough to break it and run away.
GOAT TYING
Get on a 2000 lb bull, raise one hand up in the air and the
other tight on the rope and do everything you can to stay
on for 8 seconds. This is one event that you KNOW began
as a dare, and is by far the most dangerous event in rodeo.

SCHOLARSHIPS &
BURSARY PROGRAM
Northlands is pleased to continually support this
program that benefits both colleges, universities
and their students through continued education
and rodeo support. Schools with 25 or more CIRA
members and schools with less than 25 compete
in two different categories to earn scholarships
through ticket sales. Those with the highest sale to
member ratio take home $1000 and $0.50 for every
ticket sold.
OSCAR RAK MEMORIAL
SCHOLARSHIP
Oscar Rak began his career as a machinist in Hungary,
but once he made it to Canada he earned his tickets
in five additional trades. This experience made him
a big believer in the importance of post-secondary
education, which served him well as a board member
of Fairview College. This is why each year, both a
male and female recipient will receive $500 from the
Rak family to further their education.
In 2014, the deserving winner was Desire Jackson.

RODEO QUEEN - TERRA CHALACK
Terra Chalack, 2014’s Miss Rodeo Airdrie, grew up on—and is still a part of—a purebred
Simmental and horse ranch just west of Carstairs, Alberta. She is currently in her
fourth year at the University of Lethbridge, working towards a Sociology degree and
a certificate in Human Resources. After graduation, she plans on pursuing a career in
agriculture as a way to promote farming and the western way of life. She has always had
a passion for horses, ever since she began riding at the age of 4. She was an avid 4H
member and has a love for showing cattle. In her spare time she has been volunteering
at the Therapeutic Riding Association in Lethbridge, coaching and assisting children
and adults with disabilities and special needs.
RODEO PRINCESS - MAZLIE GEHRING
Airdrie Pro Rodeo Princess Mazlie Gehring, resides in Airdrie, Alberta and works as an
office manager for Lifemark Physiotherapy. Mazlie grew up in Calgary and spent her
summers on her grandpa’s farm where she found her love and passion for rodeo and
horses. She enjoys participating in multiple charity events but has mainly been involved
with the Children’s Wish Foundation for several years, and has lead as a Trail Boss for the
annual Children’s Wish Charity Trail Ride. Mazlie also plays a role in her hometown rodeo
not only as the Princess, but also as a coach for the Airdrie Pro Rodeo Ranch Girls for the
past 3 years. Horses have remained a constant in Mazlie’s life and she plans to continue
her education by pursuing Equine Therapy.
