Gough, III Donna Harak Mary Kate Harrison Bruce Narzissenfeld letter from the BOARD PRESIDENT I became a route volunteer nearly three and a half years ago because I had a strong desire to give back to the community particularly to those less fortunate. My route delivery day is on Friday’s and I am always enthusiastic to deliver hot meals to my recipients along with my dog, Jack. The joy of greeting them, the smile on their faces and the comfort of knowing they are being nourished and their lives are being enriched because of MOW, is very heartwarming to me. My passion for Meals On Wheels prompted me to join the Board and now I am privileged to be the organization’s President for the coming year. Last year we faced challenges, as did many non-profits, however, through the efforts of our dedicated staff and the leadership of our Executive Director and Board, we were able to meet the challenges and experienced our best year ever in terms of reaching the elderly, disabled, and homebound in our community. Overall it was a great year for Meals On Wheels of Tampa. As you know, we receive no outside funding to support our mission. Our resources are derived entirely from your generous support for which we greatly appreciate. It is up to all of us to help those who are homebound and in need of proper nourishment. NOURISH ENRICH STRENGTHEN This has been an exciting year for Meals On Wheels of Tampa! With the generous support of this community – including our wonderful donors, volunteers, and business partners – the organization has experienced dramatic growth and we are now serving 17% more people than we were at this time last year! In February we embarked on a significant and successful expansion into two areas of East Tampa, which desperately needed our service. We created several new routes in four other areas of the city (north Tampa, Forest Hills, Seminole Heights, and Town and Country) in response to growing needs in these areas. We initiated our Non-Profits Helping Non-Profits program to provide sustainable funding for our mission, serving over 400 meals every day to other non-profit organizations, and using the revenue generated to feed our recipients. As a private organization which receives no government funding, we were wise stewards of resources with 81% of every dollar donated going directly to helping those in need. Finally, we launched our planned giving society, Circle Of Care, to ensure the sustainability of the mission as we continue to respond to the growing need of senior hunger in the days ahead. Our greatest strength lies in the thousands of incredible people who come together as a community to make a difference in the lives of those who need our service. There is no number that can measure the impact of their generosity for the parents, grandparents, families, and neighbors we serve. Meals On Wheels of Tampa’s mission represents one of the most basic, important and essential services to our senior population, the delivery of a hot, nutritious meal to the home of someone hungry, isolated and alone. THINGS WORTH KNOWING Meals On Wheels of Tampa | Annual Report 2011-2012 Page 2 WHAT’S NEW Meals On Wheels expands into East Tampa In January, Allegany Franciscan Ministries awarded Meals On Wheels of Tampa a generous $124,000 grant to launch an expansion into two low income neighborhoods of East Tampa. As a result, Meals On Wheels is now serving 65 new recipients in these areas, and growing rapidly. The expansion has led to four additional routes and the opportunity to touch a community in the heart of Tampa. We often say the hardest phone calls to receive in the office are the ones we have to say, “I am sorry, we do not deliver to your neighborhood.” This East Tampa expansion now allows us to answer the phone with confidence by saying, “we would be happy to serve you.” WHAT MATTERS Statistics on hunger Based on a recent study by Meals On Wheels Association of America, 1 in 7 seniors are going without enough food due to economic constraints and face the threat of hunger. This translates into 8.3 million seniors throughout our nation. This report illustrates the recent increase in senior hunger will likely also lead to additional public challenges for our country. Those living in states in the south, including Florida, and those who are younger (ages 60-69), are most likely to be threatened by hunger. From 2001 to 2010, the number of seniors experiencing the threat of hunger has increased by 78%. We have work ahead of us to reach these people and to ensure they continue to get food and remain living independently. WHAT’S NEXT Meals On Wheels plans expansions throughout Tampa Moving into a new neighborhood always presents challenges for Meals On Wheels of Tampa. We embrace the opportunity, however, because it means feeding more people and offering the chance for volunteers to serve others in their own neighborhoods. Meals On Wheels is currently in the process of launching both internal and external expansions because of the increased need in our city. We recognize expanding our services is vital to the community and we stand ready to meet the challenge in 2012 and 2013. Here are some of their responses. HOW HAS RECEIVING MEALS FROM MEALS ON WHEELS IMPROVED YOUR LIFE? “I am eating better meals than I have in years.” “After two mini strokes, preparing meals has become difficult. This gives me a nutritious meal, hot and ready to eat.” “I don’t ever have to worry about having food to eat. When I first started getting meals, I was too weak to walk through the grocery store.” “I can not prepare my dinner so it is great to have your help.” “My only income is my social security check. Caring and compassionate individuals deliver hot healthy meals to recipient’s homes five days a week, rain or shine. One of the many benefits of volunteering is the satisfaction of knowing you are contributing to the care of the growing population of the homebound and senior members in Tampa. Volunteers offer caregivers the peace of mind that their loved ones will receive a meal, friendly conversation and a daily-check.
