NEWS on WHEELS - Meals on Wheels of Trenton/Ewing
NEWS on WHEELS Meals on Wheels of Mercer County (formerly Meals on Wheels of Trenton/Ewing) is a comprehensive nutrition program committed to providing nutritious meals and related services which are designed to promote the independence, dignity, health and well-being of our home bound customers. INSIDE So Much More Than a Meal . . . . 1 Fresh Produce Program 1 Let’s Do Lunch! 2 Frank Bailey 2 Memorials and Honor Donations 2 National Conference 2 Volunteers Needed!! 3 We are always looking for new Volunteers! Contact us today! MOWMC has provided over 55,000 meals over the past year! Volume 6 Issue 1I Fall/Winter 2016 So Much More Than A Meal . . .Fall 2012 A Message From Our Executive Director Volume 4, Issue 2 Ernie arrives to do his route with a smile, as many of our volunteers do on a daily basis. However, Ernie also arrives in a wheelchair. Ernie lives with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS), a genetic, connective-tissue disorder that makes his joints too loose, especially his spine. EDS is a little known, and therefore difficult to diagnose, condition that may afflict 1 in 5000 people in the US. The extraordinary thing about Ernie is not the fact that he delivers meals in a wheelchair, but that he was once served by us at the onset of his condition, and when he was well enough decided that delivering meals was something he could do to give back. More often than not, we see the opposite; those who were once volunteers eventually needing our services. It is a very special opportunity when we can help those who once helped us! Ernie calls his condition an “invisible” disability, a characterization he shares with many of those we serve. The homebound are often invisible, especially those who live in isolation, 60% of those we serve. Those with Ehlers-Danlos could suffer for years in silence, and no one would know the difference. After living with the condition as far back as 1st grade, Ernie was finally diagnosed in 2012. He was lucky to put a name to his condition, as 90% of those with EDS go undiagnosed because of the limited number of doctors who are educated about it, and genetic testing is still under research. Ernie first came to volunteer with us in 2013 after his first two surgeries, but then stepped away for another round of interventions. But he never forgot about us, and returned with us earlier this spring as a driver in his well equipped van and high tech wheelchair! Ernie does not only volunteer with us, but keeps a busy schedule. He is one of the co- founders of the Central New Jersey Ehlers-Danlos Support Group, for those and their families who suffer from the condition that currently has about 125 members. He attends the yearly national conference of the Ehlers Danlos Society which presents the latest research on the condition. And he is always looking for ways to inform and connect anyone who may need information and support. As the driver on the route, Ernie always makes a point to ask the runner about each participant they visit that day. He explains that when he was homebound, what he most looked forward to was the interaction he had with our volunteers. So while the timing on the route does not permit Ernie to go to every door, he does feel he is making a difference in the way that he can, and we are exceedingly grateful to call him our volunteer! “This is something I can do, and it takes a village” he says. These are the people and experiences that make us “so much more than a meal”. We are blessed that Ernie, who was once on the receiving end of our meals, can remind us of this every day. For more information on EDS, please go to ehlers-danlos.com MOWMC Partners with the Greenwood Farmers Market to Get Seniors Fresh Produce The Farmers Market Check program, administered through the Mercer County Office on Aging, was developed to provide low-income seniors with checks they can use to purchase fresh produce grown by New Jersey farmers. It offers them an increased opportunity to include a nutritious choice to their eating habits, and helps the older adult who may be struggling financially to get the most for their money . Because our seniors are homebound, they have not been able to access the checks they are entitled to receive, until now. By partnering with the local Trenton Greenwood Farmers Market, not only did we get them weekly bags of fresh fruits and veggies delivered by our volunteers this summer, but they are able to extend $25 dollars worth of checks to $50 using “Green Bucks” though a grant the market received! The response has been overwhelming, and the Trenton seniors loved receiving fresh fruit, veggies and even bread! It is our hope to be able to extend this program to all the municipalities we serve in the future! Page 2 News on Wheels “Let’s Do Lunch”: A Media Campaign MOWMC Loses One of Our Founders of Meals on Wheels America More than 10 million (1 in 6) seniors in the U.S. face the threat of hunger and more than 15 million (1 in 4) are living in isolation. This past summer, Meals on Wheels America, in partnership with the Ad Council, launched its first-ever national campaign with the goal to recruit 1 million volunteers this year alone, to serve the nation’s most vulnerable citizens. With the senior population projected to double by 2050, MOWMC has joined the effort to help inspire a new army of volunteers locally to meet the growing need. The fully integrated campaign, including TV, radio, print, and digital public service announcements (PSAs), launched in major markets across the U.S., Since its launch, we have already seen an uptick in volunteer inquiries. The campaign, created pro bono by the ad agency Anomaly, will invite America to “Do Lunch” by volunteering during the critical lunch hour period to deliver meals and a smile to seniors. The campaign will tell the poignant stories of just a few of the 2.4 million seniors the national Meals on Wheels network serves each year, stories that celebrate their lives and show how inspiring, wise and charming they really are. To further highlight their stories, renowned celebrity photographer Mark Seliger – who has photographed some of our culture’s most famous faces from Kurt Cobain to President Obama – turned his lens to Meals on Wheels seniors and created a series of portraits for the campaign. Local agencies can then customize them as we did below! Frank A. Bailey helped get Meals on Wheels in Mercer County rolling in 1973, when as co-founder, he set out in a VW bus and delivered 4 meals in Trenton, NJ. We lost Frank earlier this year at the age of 96! Frank was born in Trenton, and served in the South Pacific during WWII. He was a retired teacher of the deaf at the Katzenbach school. He served as President of our Meals on Wheels for many, many years. Before his passing, he was visited weekly by one of our long time volunteers, Burt. Burt would see to it that he had everything he needed, and brought him special seasonal treats. Current staff had the honor of meeting him before he passed away, thanking him for his commitment to the homebound, and for founding our organization. Thank you for the legacy Frank; you will never be forgotten! MOWMC Honored by the Karma Foundation On September 20th, 2016, in honor of the Karma Foundation’s 20th Anniversary, they chose 20 outstanding non-profits to honor for the presentation of the “20 for 20” Awards. MOWMC received a $10,000 donation as one of the 20, for the outstanding work we do in feeding the homebound. We are humbled! Established in 1996, the Karma Foundation provides grants in support of organizations engaged in activities and programs in the areas of Arts & Culture, Autism, Education & Literacy, Health & Human Services and Development & Enrichment of Jewish Life. Memorials and Honor Donations In Memory of Frank Bailey Jeannene & J. David Wiseman Staff Attends the National Meals on Wheels Conference. In Honor of Charles Balaza Sasa Olessi Montaño, Executive Director, and Tim Wolf, Director of Program Services, were fortunate this year to attend the National Meals on Wheels America Conference, “Together We Rise”, held in Nashville, Tennessee at the end of August. MOWMC received a scholarship from Meals on Wheels America in order to attend. The national conference brings together representatives from over 500 associations from across the country for training and information sharing explicitly targeted to meals on wheels operations.
