The warm weather has helped with the repair of the winter damage on the greens. Eric and his crew have worked hard. Speaking of hard work, the ladies of the Belmont Garden Club also have worked hard to plant flowers, prune shrubs and spruce up the grounds. Our golf course and clubhouse grounds look great .... Thanks ladies and thanks to the grounds crew. At the request of the members, we are expanding the dining service hours. Determining the hours of operation is a difficult problem. We struggle to balance member demand with staffing costs. The solution is member support. Watch the newsletter and the weekly emails that remind you of Chef Kyle's specials. Reservations are requested but not necessary for that last minute decision to come to the club for dinner. Please note that 8:30 PM is the time of the last seating but not the closing time of the club. Another issue regarding our food service is menu pricing. I'm sure you have noticed the news articles regarding the rapidly increasing prices of beef, poultry and seafood. These cost increases are showing up at grocery stores and restaurants and have also impacted us. Prudent financial control of our food service requires that we adjust menu prices effective June 1. Chef Kyle and his team provide outstanding quality. These modest increases are required to maintain the service at the levels our members deserve. The Board would like to clarify the tipping policy of Belmont. The Bylaws state that Belmont is a non-tipping club. The exceptions to this policy are the Ladies and Men's locker room attendants and the Valet Parking attendants. Some members have requested a way to tip the bag room staff. Late in the season, before the staff returns to school, we will provide an optional sign up sheet for those who wish to thank the bag room staff. This is the best way to assure that any money is distributed fairly to the entire bag room staff. The Board has approved this additional exception to the nontipping policy. As always, your Board welcomes your comments and questions. -John Bachey 3 of 21 Todd Daniels Todd’s Topics Clubhouse Manager/ Special Events 419-666-0440 ext. 1 [email protected] Greetings! Within the last several weeks we have been able to begin our regular topdressing program and applying growth regulator. In addition, you may have noticed that the height of cut is getting lower. Ideally we would like to reach the optimum height of cut within the next couple of weeks. It is a slow, but important process in order that the bent grass seedlings have the best opportunity to recoup vital resources prior to maintaining the turf at the lowest cut. Due to the late arrival of spring, the typical clean-up, trimming, edging and mulching began later than normal. We are currently working on these and other detailed tasks throughout the entire property. The extreme winter is also to blame for the multitude of irrigation repairs that have been required this spring. You may notice these repairs taking place on a daily basis at various locations on the course. My crew continues to work diligently to return the course to member expectations as quickly as possible. 10 of 21 On the Court... USTA Tennis News We currently have four USTA League teams that will be competing this summer. The men have teams at the A 18 & O 3.5 and 4.0 levels. If anyone is still interested in signing up, each team could really use a few extra players. The deadline is two weeks prior to the league season final match. 4.0 Men’s Team 3.5 Men’s Team Tuesdays at 7:00 p.m. Thursdays at 7:00 p.m. ADULT CLINICS The Belmont Women have teams at the A 18 & O 3.0 and A 55 & O 7.0 levels. Again, if anyone is interested in playing this team could use extra players. Even if you haven’t touched a racquet in years, you may be surprised at how fast you can dust off some of the rust. Contact the tennis center if you have an interest in becoming a part of the teams. It’s a great way to meet new people and have fun while getting some exercise. 3.0 Women Team 7.0 Women Team Mondays at 7:00 p.m. Thursdays at 9:30 a.m. Depending on the level of interest shown by BCC members, summer clinics may be scheduled throughout the summer. There have been some ladies wanting to do drill and play sessions. Wednesday nights will most likely be the best time for this as matches are scheduled on other days of the week. There will be sign-up sheets in the tennis center for those interested. The clinics can be structured to fit the needs of those attending. If you would like to work on your game on an individual basis, private lessons are available. Group lessons for families or couples may also be something to consider so that you can get back into the swing of things. Contact the tennis center to get set up. Thursday Evenings: 6:30 (Ladies night—many of the 3.0 team members have been attending) Saturday Morning: 11:00 (Co-ed drill—will be structured to the needs of those attending) 11 of 21 On the Court Continued… Update on Outdoor Courts The good news is that the outdoor courts are ready for play. Due to a good stretch of nice weather, the final work was completed and the courts are in excellent shape. Remember it will take a few times of playing on the new surface to get used to it, so get out and give it try. It is much easier on the feet and joints then playing on hard courts. It will be nice to finally get in some tennis outside after the long winter. We kindly ask that you wear only tennis shoes while playing on the courts to protect them from being damaged. In the past, running shoes have really done some significant damage. Feel free to come out and watch one of the matches. It is such a beautiful setting, you can’t ask for a better place to watch tennis. As the summer progresses, continued improvements will be made to the tennis center. Any suggestions or help you may want to offer would be greatly appreciated. Note: For Belmont Country Club (BCC) members using the clay courts this summer, there will be a onetime billing of a $30 outdoor fee in May. JUNIOR TENNIS (JTA) The BCC Tennis Staff will continue to work with the JTA kids this summer. JTA will meet Tuesday thru Thursday from 9:30 a.m.-11:00 a.m. Fridays will be reserved for tournament and high school level players to play matches. We also plan to start a beginner level group that will be for some of our younger kids that are a bit newer to the game. We would like to keep this group to ages 10 and up. They will meet Tuesday and Thursday at 11:00 a.m. for an hour. Belmont Country Club will be hosting a day during our summer camp to introduce the kids to tennis. This will happen each month throughout the summer. If you have children that may be interested in any of these programs, please contact the tennis center. 12 of 21 All Belmont Members are invited to come out and watch Tennis Play at Belmont’s Tennis Building & Courts 13 of 21 At The Pool… Nora and Will, children of Jay and Rachel Davis, were the first to jump in the pool on opening day. Jackie Venzel, Pool Manager More information and registration is available at the pool. Just stop by the information tables or call 419-666-3515 during pool hours. 14 of 21 15 of 21 The Belmont Bluebird Trail There are 15 donated bluebird houses on the Belmont Golf Course this year. The trail begins on hole number 6 where you will see houses numbered 1 and 2, and continues through hole 18 with houses at the tee. In addition, several members whose property abuts the course maintain their own houses bringing the total number of houses to over 20. Sue Purewal and I monitor the golf course houses and check the nest status during the season. The information about nests and fledglings on the trail is reported to the Ohio Bluebird Society in the fall each year. In 2013 we nested and fledged 19 bluebirds, 31 tree swallows, and 5 wrens. So far this year we are seeing bluebird nests in 3 of our houses and swallow nests in an additional 4 houses. There are also the beginnings of nests in the other houses, but not enough to determine the builders identity. The houses have been put up in pairs to promote swallows and bluebirds. Often a swallow will nest in one house and a bluebird in the other. The tree swallows you see on the course are the iridescent blue and white birds that seem to soar and swoop. They are actually catching insects when they are flying like that and they can consume 1000 insects a day. Both the bluebirds and the swallows are beneficial birds to the Belmont Golf Course. The sparrow is a predator to the bluebird and will take over a bluebird house and nest. We encourage you while watching our Belmont birdhouses to watch for a sparrow sitting on a house and report it to either Sue or myself as this may mean a house has been taken over by the sparrow. We will remove the nest to discourage the sparrow. Enjoy our Belmont birds and look for continuing updates on activity on the trail. If anyone is interested in sponsoring a new house the cost is $65 which includes the house, pole and predator guard. by Linda Stanford 16 of 21 Belmont Women’s Golf Association The ladies started their opening day with a 9 hole scramble followed by a luncheon and talked about the golf season ahead. Although, the day was a bit chilly, as May mornings usually are, they came into a beautiful luncheon planned by Patty Foster, filled with Butterflies along with a France theme.
