KING GEORGE V SCHOOL GALA DINNER 19th April 2013
KING GEORGE V SCHOOL GALA DINNER 19th April 2013 Principal’s Message individuals and groups thus far, we are about to launch an Annual Giving campaign which will enable everyone to make gifts of all sizes to the Development Fund. We expect this to be a seed that grows so that students attending KGV over the next few decades benefit from the work we have started today. I am delighted to welcome you once again to KGV’s Gala Fundraising Dinner and thank you for supporting us in our Development Initiative to raise funds as we take responsibility for our own future under the ESF umbrella. We are very pleased with the progress we have made so far. Alongside the demonstrable site improvements with the unveiling of the two ESF funded new buildings on the school site, we have also been finalising our plans for three improvements that will be completed (or very nearly!) by the time we meet again in a year’s time: • The Fung Learning Resources Centre in Peel Block supported by the very generous donation from the Fung Foundation and from KGV funds • The refurbishment of the School Field supported by generous donations by the HK Rugby Football Union, the Cricket Association and ESF Educational Services Limited • The Alteration and Amendment of the school site to take account of the two new buildings supported by ESF funds I am delighted to welcome the Honourable Mr. Justice Kemal Bokhary as our special guest this evening and the third recipient of the Principal’s Award for the KGV Alumni who has made an Outstanding Contribution to Hong Kong. We are honoured that such a powerful and influential figure should accept this award and we look forward to hearing his thoughts about his old school. Finally I’d like to thank Meghan Spillane, Rosa Chan and Reyna Harilela who have been the key organisers behind tonight and Mahesh Harilela and Paul Varty for their outstanding strategic support. They all do a sterling job and are indispensible to the success of the evening. Have a fabulous time enjoying the best of KGV and I look forward to your continuing support in the months and years to come. These plans are very exciting but we want also to start thinking about how we can support other initiatives within KGV. How might we support environmental work? How might we use funds to cherish our heritage and traditions? How might we support language learning for our students? How might we begin to explore the notion of scholarships and educational support? These questions will come to the fore over the next year and we want you all to help us to draft out the answers as we move ahead at great speed. KGV is now ready to involve the whole community in helping to support future initiatives and I am delighted that to complement the very generous donations made by key Principal Ed Wickins 1 2 Chair of the Strategic Development Committee Message Mr. Rusy M. Shroff and Mrs. Purviz R. Shroff To the esteemed members of the KGV Community, It gives me great pleasure to proudly announce the achievements we have made during the last 12 months. We have managed to raise awareness through our Gala Dinners, word of mouth, and through the efforts of the community and members of the various committees. It is with hard work and commitment that our message to enhance and create a world-class teaching institution is beginning to take hold and the results of the Strategic Development Committee are becoming visible. We now have a rock-climbing wall, new chairs for students, two new buildings, and soon, a resurfaced field. Most recently we’ve received funds to build a brand new Learning Resource Centre in Peel Block. I would like to thank Victor & Julia Fung, The Fung family, Jal Shroff, Mrs. Purviz and Mr. Rusy Shroff and family, the HKRFU, Cricket Association, and ESF Educational Services Limited for their generous donations, the many individuals and families for their continued support, and to the organizations that allow us to persevere in driving and delivering a better environment for the students at KGV. Thank you all for supporting us and believing in our vision. He has since remained on the bench as a non-permanent judge. Silver Sponsor Kemal attended KGV from 1963-1967, and after graduation he studied Law at Temple University in London. He returned to Hong Kong in 1971 and established a successful legal practice before becoming a judge. His impact during his time as a permanent judge was significant: during his tenure he heard hundreds of cases and currently holds the record for the number of dissenting opinions he has written. Kemal’s wife Verina is also a judge in Hong Kong and they have three daughters. 7 8 Entertainment Brian Hodgson Professional Auctioneer Brian Hodgson founded his first Auction Company in early 2000 and started Hong Kong Auctions in 2006. Chris Carpio, a musician playing tonight, is also a KGV alumnus. KGV Musical Ensemble Performing for you at cocktail hour tonight are several talented young members of the KGV Orchestra, including Tomson Pong (violin), Ryan Wong (violin), Coco Ng (viola), Hayden Ngan (cello), Katrina Chu (flute) and Melody Leung (harp). Most were part of the biennial ESF Orchestra and Choir event, and all are currently taking the IGCSE Music course at KGV. Each member has had much experience in the field of performance and is delighted to be taking part in this year’s KGV Gala dinner by performing for you tonight. Silver Sponsor 9 10 Upsdell House Middle School Dance Team Laura Leung and Charles Lam Laura and Charles feel very fortunate to be able to share a passion that they have in common - Latin dancing. It is a type of dance that is not quite well known in the school community and certainly has not been performed in the evening of music and dance for a period of time. In February they took this opportunity together and performed in front of the school audience for the first time. Since then they have also taken part in the interschool dance festival, gaining a distinction in both the chacha and the jive. Tonight they will be performing a mixture of these two dances to the songs “Begging You” and “Girls Gone Wild”. Sophie Matthews, Joanne Lao, Sze Tung and Jenny Park, Norman Zhang As a lover of music, singing and composing have been enjoyable hobbies for Sophie from an early age. She has been involved in school musicals, in the YRock competition last year, and more recently, Panache 3.0, KGV’s charity fashion show. Tonight, you will hear a performance by a group she assembled for the Senior Inter-house Music Solo category; a rendition of Aretha Franklin’s ‘I Say a Little Prayer’. Katie Stokes Katie has been involved in dance, theatre and singing since Year 7. Most recently she has been involved in the KGV production of Little Shop of Horrors, sang a cappella in the Changes project and performed in Inter-house music solo and ensemble. Tonight she will be singing ‘Hit the Road Jack’ by Ray Charles. 11 The Upsdell House won this year’s Evening of Music and Dance Middle School competition, and their theme was “What if the museum came to life?” During a visit to the local museum, two young girls are amazed to discover that everything is not quite as it seems. As they roam through their favourite exhibits, they soon realize that the classic portraits, Native American statues, soldier figurines, and Greek sculptures are coming to life! Chaos ensues as the cultures collide and the girls are torn apart in the crossfire. As the battle intensifies, they are hopelessly caught up in the mix. Eventually they find each other and restore harmony to the museum through friendship and teamwork. Daphne Poon and Jenny Park Jenny and Daphne discovered their shared love of music when they met in ESF Choir as Year 7 students. As GCSE Music classmates they began performing together, and the two best friends have since gone on to become music captains for their houses and have founded KGV’s Student-Led Choir. As a member of KGV’s Senior Chamber Choir, Jenny has performed with the Hong Kong Women’s Choir, and has also sung at the International Schools’ Choral Music Festival. Her singing endeavours led her to meet with international artist Greyson Chance last year, after winning first place in a singing contest associated with the singer. Daphne has engaged in performance competitions such as the YRock Pop International Challenge, which led to performances at the Picnic in the Park music festival; she won first place in the Hong Kong Zonta Club’s Encore singing contest and has also won awards for her original music from Hong Kong Star Factor and the Hong Kong Young Artists’ Showcase. Tonight, they will be reprising their KGV Evening of Music and Dance performance, singing ‘Who You Are’ by Jessie J. 12 Tonight’s Silent Auction Items Gift of Confidence Learn how to speak with confidence with Hong Kong’s Champion Public Speaker, Brian Hodgson, who has 33 years of experience in public speaking.
