A huge effort was made to prepare the courts and grounds for this tournament to make it the best ever. Mark Stuart installed the awnings over the clubhouse doors, Bev Wilson designed the colorful new sign and Mark installed it. The rebuilt canopy on the east side of the center garden was a big addition this year along with the viewing deck at the far east side. Nets were replaced by the team of Bob Walsh, Al and Fred Facchini and Chuck Simonds. Many volunteers were busy behind the scenes making sure that things went smoothly. Every morning the setup crew began at 6:30 and earlier to set out the water, single sticks, clean bathrooms and dump the trash. That crew was Chuck Simonds, Fred Facchini, Matt Forbes, Til Noeggerath, Al Facchini, Dick Giusto, Phil Lampe and Bob Walsh. Many of this same crew were there each night to put everything away. Al Facchini kept the ice coming. The food and drink tables were beautifully done again by the famous Bruce and Barbara team. Their crew of helpers included Julie Jerome, Lis MacDonald, Mark Glickstein, Phil Jerome, Tove Robinson, Jan Matijasic &, Cindi Glasier. Some worked the desk and some donated food. Jan and her team of court monitors supported the officials. The court monitors were Tony Kelly, Lis MacDonald, Jan Matijasic, Phyllis Harris, Don Hamilton, Yong Willendrup, Ann Smith, Gila Freeberg, Beverly Leonard, Cindi Glasier and Jan Edwards. Thanks to all of you for helping make our tournament such a big success and if we forgot to mention your name please forgive us Top, Mark Stuart installs the awnings; center, Bob, Al, Fred and Chuck replace a net; bottom, Bob and Chuck tighten things up! SNMWTL UPDATE Chairperson Nancy Gardner Reports-The Sonoma/Napa/Marin Women's Tennis League is gearing up for the start of the 2010-2011 season in early September. All practices and matches are held on week day mornings. This year, NVTA is fielding three teams: A-3, B-1, and B-2. If you are free week day mornings and would like to join a tennis team, please contact Nancy Gardner at 944-1345, or [email protected]. Captain's Corner Jan Edwards Reports-The NVTA 3.5 Women's team aka "Slick Chicks" are headed to Districts in August, with a undefeated record of 11 - 0! We won our second playoff match 3-2 against the very tough Benicia team. Our super stars of the match were our singles players, Susan Collins and Charlotte Hart, both undefeated all season! A special thanks to our friends and family who came out to cheer us on ... It makes a huge difference to hear everyone cheering on the sidelines! The Slick Chicks are: Sheila Chapman, Susan Collins, Jane Cunningham, Susie Davis, Jan Edwards, Esther Guardado, Phyllis Harris, Sharon Harris, Charlotte Hart, Kim Hocker, Marie Kelly, Whitney Miller, Kim Phinney, Susie Savino, Sue Smith, Karen Waite, Nancy Waldeck, Kathleen Williams. (team picture at left) Lorraine Fazzolare Reports-The NVTA 4.0 Women's team had a great season. We're calling it a building year and next year--watch out! We ended the season in 4th place, making it to the playoffs against the behemoth Green Valley CC. We drove to GVCC having the only expectation to get some good practice against top 4.0 players. Our opponents didn't expect much competition but they were shaken by our doubles teams of Diane Barker and Jenny Yamakawa, Ruth Berggren and Corky Rosengren, Karen Dahl and Nancy Waldeck. They all fought hard and gave their opponents some serious competition. The Cinderella stories were on the singles courts. Our patient, backboard Pammi Bellefeuille took the first set off her opponent, who was undefeated all season and barely losing in the 3rd set. Our soon-to-be-4.0, Amy Rogers, beat her opponent and gave her the only loss all season. Thanks to all our team members for a fun season. Next year NVTA will be a contendah! Captain Dick Guisto Reports-The old Men of the NVTA SS 65 team had a good season this year. We won 9 and lost 5 good enough for third place and a first round playoff vs Marin T. C. We lost to Marin in a very hard fought close match 2-1. Jeff Ferries and Mark Glickstein won a 3 hour match 36,6-2,6-3. Tal and I lost 7-6, 6-4. Lou Martin and Ira Smith lost a 3 setter 6-1, 4-6, 6-3. I would like to thank all our players and a GREAT BIG THANKS to Bob Walsh our oldest SS senior at 84 for being our Co-Captain. Matt Forbes Reports-The Mens 4.5 team wrapped up their season recently. This was a first year team for NVTA and played very well with many close matches. The team was anchored by the following players- Jim Reilly,Todd Santiago, Kyle McAhren, Mike Smith, Zdenek Zahradnicek, Ross Yarlott, Fred Facchini, and Pete Arbios. Rounding out the team was John Cooney, Scott Butterfield,Pat Eggers,Eric Grigsby, Larry Holman, Owen Irwin, Yannick Rousseau,Chris Swain, Jim Vanoli, George Wakerlin, and Jeff Wights. Matt Forbes Reports-The mens 4.0 finished with a league record of 8-3 unfortunately losing a very close match to an undefeated Rancho Solano team 3/2. The team was led throughout the season by the play of - Fred Facchini, Scott Butterfield, Jim Vanoli, Jeff Wights, Larry Holman, Matt Forbes, Chris Swain, John Euser, Tom Boster. Also contributing to the successful season were Bulmaro. Farias , John Cooney, Pete Arbios, Owen Irwin, Pat Eggers, Ben Joson, Sam Lamonica, Rob Lamonica, Larry Tsujihara, John Liles, Bob Sibley, Leonard Lamb. It was a good season and we look forward to an even better one next year. Matt Forbes Reports-The 50 MX season is underway with a group competitive local teams. The league this year consists of teams from Vacaville, Rancho Solano, Silverado CC, and NVTA. Napa opened the season against Vacaville and came away with a 2-1 victory thanks to the strong play of Ann Smith/Fred Facchini, Harold Zagunis/Susan Shifflet, and Larry Gable/Cheryl Sweeney. We are looking forward to a fun competitive season. Finally!! Tennis Ball Recycling!! John Blasingame Reports- An Arkansas company called Rebounces takes balls they receive and repressurizes them for sale or distributes them to schools, kennels, etc. for use. They are working on an arrangement to ship balls that cannot be reused to a company for grinding and use in road paving material. If we collect balls they will pay shipping costs. We are going to give this a try by locating a box or container next to our trash/recycling bins and label it for tennis ball recycling. Hopefully, players will participate and not toss doggie balls, cans or other junk in the box! Is this wishful thinking? Perhaps we can do our part in reducing the 20,000 + tons of tennis balls filling landfills every year! Great idea John! Keep Chairs Off the Lawn Please Our gardener has asked us to remind people to keep the chairs OFF THE GRASS, because they block the sprinklers. Captains, please to check to see that all chairs are on the patio before you lock up the courtyard!!
