Apprenticeships - Institute of the Motor Industry
Apprenticeships – a key rung in the career ladder Part of our industrial heritage, the apprenticeship is arguably still the most recognised and effective means of a gaining a vocational skill at an early age, which often leads into a lifelong career. Steve Scofield, Head of Skills Development at the IMI says “It’s very important that our industry gets behind the apprenticeship more so now than ever before as it needs capable young minds which can be developed into tomorrow’s business leaders, sales professionals, master technicians and a whole host of career opportunities. We’ve got some of the most exciting and sophisticated products available to consumers so it should follow that we have a workforce which reflects this.” The IMI has pledged a 100% increase in the number of apprentices joining the retail motor industry over the next five years to help tackle skills shortages. Apprentices 'graduating' in the automotive sector each year account for approximately 10% of the 100,000 apprenticeships in over 80 industry sectors. The IMI wants 40,000 ‘home grown’ apprentices in the automotive sector by 2013. Apprentices learn through a combination of on and off the job learning. On the job you will work alongside current staff, off the job you would attend a local learning provider, such as a further education college where you will work towards a nationally recognised qualification. Termed ‘Apprenticeships’ and ‘Advanced Apprenticeships’ in England and ‘Modern Apprenticeships’ in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, there is funding available across all four nations to support apprenticeships. Most apprentices are employed by business and paid a salary that reflects their skills, experience, age and ability. A few apprentices will be on work placement with a business and get paid an education maintenance allowance, if they are eligible. There are currently two routes for an individual to enter into Apprenticeship scheme, one is via an employer directly and becoming enrolled in their Apprenticeship programme, the other is via a college or independent training provider. This directory sets out a selection of contact details for entry via the employer route, details of how to find a local college or training provider can be found at www.motor.org.uk/careers. It was part of an initiative to attract more young people into the UK’s £5 billion motorsport industry, which employs 40,000 people in Britain alone and boasts most of the world’s top racing teams. A recent study suggested that engineering’s ‘negative image’ is failing to attract enough talented youngsters and nearly half of businesses reported difficulties in recruiting skilled technicians and engineers. Classes at Donnington Park are intended to help students ‘move their skills up a gear’ and underline the world class skills they will need in tomorrow’s workplace. Attendees are grouped into pit teams to learn about the skills required for preparing race cars and pit stop maintenance. Gary Jackson, 22, an apprentice at Polar Ford in Bradford and a student at Blackpool and Fylde College, said he learned a lot from the Donnington experience, adding: "The apprenticeship I'm doing involves lots of hands on experience, which means I've learnt a lot quicker than if I'd been doing just course-based work. Also, as the course is backed by a main dealer, I get to keep up to date with all the latest engine management equipment and training.” Stephen Gardner, director of apprenticeships at the Learning and Skills Council, said: “The UK has long maintained pole position on the world’s Formula 1 stage. However, a lack of skills is posing a major threat to its dominance. Working with employers and training providers, we are taking action to ensure the industry attracts, trains and retains the best people.” Paul Higham, race team manager at Blackpool and Fylde College, added: “Engineering is often viewed negatively by young people as a career option. We wanted to challenge this perception by designing a class at Donnington Park that would excite learners and introduce them to the fantastic motorsports careers they could go on to have.” July 2008 7 Key Company Name Provider description Address Telephone Number Contact Name Automotive Technician Accreditation (ATA) is a voluntary assessment scheme which proves the competence of technicians working across many areas of the motor industry, giving peace of mind to customers as well as raising the professional status and credibility of skilled individuals. Regulated by The Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI), the scheme now has some 10,000 registered technicians, all of whom are issued with a photo identity card. To achieve accreditation, a technician must sign a code of conduct and then pass a series of practical tasks and an on-line Fax Number Web knowledge test. Successful individuals are issued with a photo identity card, valid for five years and their employer details are listed on the ATA website. ATA-registered technicians must be re-assessed after five years to maintain their credentials with tests based on National Occupational Standards to ensure that technicians keep abreast of changing skills requirements and future innovations in technology. There are two routes to achieving ATA registration: • via an ATA approved assessment centre • via and ATA approved vehicle Email manufacturer programme Since the introduction of ATA for light vehicle, the scheme has since been extended to air-conditioning, autoglazing, motorcycle, panel, paint, MET, roadside assistance and vehicle damage assessors.
