The 2012 Khabele School Annual Report
The 2012 Khabele School Annual Report Dear Khabele School Community, BOARD OF TRUSTEES 2012-2013 SCHOOL ADMINISTRATION The Khabele School is a 501c(3) non-profit organization, and is run by a Board of Trustees. The Board serves without compensation. Our board members are professionals in the community who are committed to The Khabele Mission. Khotso Khabele, Executive Director Jodi Zipp (Chair Melissa Andrews, Middle & High School Director of Academics David Gottfried (Vice Chair) Ryan Phillips, Middle & High School Director of Culture Jerry Aubin (Treasurer) Amy Nylund, Director of Communications Catherine Benouis Jason Lewiss, Technical Director Khotso Khabele Margaret Rittenhouse, Business Office Manager Zoltan Papp Moya Khabele, Marketing Consultant Joy Standefer Georgie Georgákis, Middle & High School Director of Admissions & Operations Milad Taghehchian Jennifer Tyson Lori Lankford, Director of Finance & Advancement Jennifer Tyson, Early Childhood & Elementary Director Lisa Dubuque, Middle & High School Registrar and College Counselor Jote Khalsa, Early Childhood & Elementary Operations Manager Krista Phillips, Early Childhood & Elementary Enrollment Coordinator Deborah Way-Salinas, Early Childhood & Elementary Curriculum Coordinator 2012 was a year of strengthening our roots! As we came together as one school community, serving ages 18 months to 18 years, we further defined our goals and our vision. We chose “A Community for a Peaceful World” as our all-school motto, and continued to focus on what those words mean for each of our age groups. We are grateful to everyone who has supported our school this year, from parents to staff members to community businesses. I am happy to say that we are financially stronger then ever before. We are honored by the support of our parent community—90% of whom contributed to our school in 2012—and grateful to the members of our Board of Trustees, who continue to guide the school in staying true to its mission while ensuring that we remain on very steady financial ground. We are also thankful for the support of some fantastic Austin businesses that contributed to our school in 2012. In particular, Whole Foods Market donated $3000 towards our Khabele Forward (an annual 3-day retreat for our Middle & High School community), which enabled us to purchase and prepare wholesome, delicious food for our students and staff. We are so grateful for these meaningful community partnerships. Our students remind us each day of the heart of our mission—to produce graduates who will continue to seek knowledge throughout their lives, and who will bring a passion for learning, a desire for peace, and deep courage to whatever they undertake. I am inspired every day by our students—from a Primary child learning how to express himself clearly, to an elementary student tackling the science fair with enthusiasm, to a middle schooler who discovers a new passion for art, to a high school student who tackles the college admissions process and gets into her dream school... Bravery, enthusiasm, and deep curiosity are on display every day on our campuses, and it is a joy to witness. We move into 2013 with a daily commitment to our vision of cultivating learning communities in which each and every student, parent, and staff member falls in love with learning, realizes their profound beauty, and lives with courage and authenticity. We are deeply grateful for your support on this journey. Sincerely, Khotso Khabele letter from KHOTSO KHABELE executive director THE KHABELE SCHOOL ANNUAL FUND Virginia Upper El Sam EE 2/3 Mike EE 2 Marshall K1 C Jaclyn K1 B Eric K1 A Elena Primary 4 David Y 100 80 60 40 20 Primary 3 David Primary 2 Dave Primary 1 Brandon Casita 2 0 Upper School Participation by Advisory Class The Annual Fund is the most important fundraising effort at Khabele. All contributions raised through the Annual Fund go directly to our operating budget to help fill the gap between tuition revenue and our operating expense. The worthwhile investment helps support areas of the school – from faculty salaries to financial aid to day-to-day classroom programs. To meet our goals it takes the support of the entire community – parents, trustees, faculty, staff, and alumni. 100 80 60 40 20 0 Lower School Participation by Program 2012 marked the first year of a joint Annual Fund drive between our newly merged schools. The Annual Fund was supported by nearly 40 parent volunteers who coordinated with classrooms and advisories by sending emails and making phone calls. In 2012, 75% of our parents and staff members participated in the Annual Fund drive. Congratulations to the K-1B class for hitting 100% parent participation! More than 90% of our parents gave to the Annual Fund, Spring Gala, or Fall Festival during the year. The Board of Trustees continued their 100% participation this year. Other Income Fundraising and Grants Admin and Supplies Tuition Income $6,278,371 Financial Aid Facilities and Operations Salaries and Benefits Expenses $6,278,371 We want to extend a special thank you to the parent volunteers who helped support this year’s Annual Fund Drive: Carol Amador, Dora Arellano, Roggie Baer, Trish Bennett, Marcela Billig, Stephanie Binder, Jana Bodeman, Sarrah Bolin, Cliff Cintula, Stacia De Leon, Kara Dunleavy, Kristin Duke, Ashley Edwards, Adriane Foster, Steve Harriman, Leslie Hirsch, Carey Jung, Mary Lamoreaux, Katy Levit, Dawn Lindsey, Melissa Mather, John McIver, Roy Mullin, Angie Payne, Robin Richard, Stephanie Shindler, Dana Smith, Radhika Sud, Carla Thompson, Courtney Weynand, Michelle & Kay Winowiak, and Ginny Woodruff. 2012 FUNDRAISING EVENTS Spring Gala 2012: Harambee! We thank each of you who attended our Spring Gala in April 2012! Harambee was a night of friends, great music, and celebration at the AT&T Center on the University of Texas campus. We were thrilled to have Hard Proof Afrobeat provide the night’s fabulous music. This Austinbased collective of musicians is the sole purveyor of African funk in the state of Texas (and features Khabele’s own Joe Sokolik!). Hard Proof was featured recently in Tribeza magazine: “…Austin’s musical landscape truly is limitless. And over the last few years, the all-star collective known as Hard Proof Afrobeat has stretched it further, in fact, all the way across the Atlantic. …this music should really be a part of your life, and 2012 is as good a time as any to make that happen.” It was also a very successful night of fundraising, with $88,000 raised for the Khabele School! We are so grateful to each of our sponsors, attendees, and auction donors. We couldn’t have done this without you. Promavera On February 25th, 2012, our Primavera campus hosted Promavera, an unforgettable 80s prom-themed fundraiser that raised $17,500. The Zilker Botanical Garden was decked out in teal and fuchsia, we fired up the hair crimper, donned yards of taffeta, and danced the night away! We are grateful to our fundraising committee members, who did an incredible job of putting together such a memorable night, and to all of the businesses and individuals who donated to our event and to our auction, including Whole Foods Market and the Whip In Market. Khabele Kick-Off Festival We had our first all-school fall festival in September, and the rainy weather didn’t stop us from having a great event—we had a record crowd of more than 600 guests! Our community gathered at the Texas School for the Deaf’s Gamblin Field for a day of games, food, and fun. The highlight of the day was the Kickball Tournament. Congratulations to our first Khabele Kick-Off Champions: The Big Red K-1C team! Our Middle & High School students and Advisors did an excellent job with their activity booths—the younger students loved getting face-painted, hair-sprayed, and tattooed. The rocket launch, photo booth, art wall, and pumpkin painting were also huge hits! We could not have held this event without the help of our volunteers. We had more than 30 families volunteer their time to help with the event. It was an excellent party and a great way to kick off our Annual Fund Drive. We look forward to planning Khabele Kick-Off 2013! Athletics The Middle & High School offered four extracurricular competitive sports this year: Flag Football, Volleyball, Soccer, and Basketball. The goal of our Primary & Elementary Physical Education program is to show each child how to possess the healthiest body, spirit, and mind possible; with a focus on building values, ethics, and character. Elementary students have daily PE classes, and Primary students have weekly classes. The Khabele Jazz Band participated in the TPSMEA Competition in Dallas in April and had three ensembles earn the highest score possible. The Middle & High School Theatre Department staged four performances in 2012. Our Visual Arts students participated in East Austin Studio Tour, had a record number of students showing and selling work in the Spring Gala auction, took part in an all-school art show at Pump Project, and participated in projects with Women & Their Work gallery and Fusebox contemporary art festival. After writing essays proclaiming their love of watching and making movies, fifteen Khabele film students were chosen to attend the Austin Film Festival on scholarship in Fall 2012. Our Middle School photography students had a show in April at Rio on the Eastside, and our Advanced Photography and AP Art students put on a well-received show from visiting curators called “Parallel Anatomies” at Big Medium Gallery. AP Art students scored in the top range for their AP art portfolios, and two students won portfoliobased college scholarships: Emily Shubin to Pratt Institute in New York and Rachael Schimmoller to Cornell University. EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES Foreign Language Activities Community Service Four of our students won medals at the 38th Annual Poetry Declamation at UT in April. Dana Hutchins received 2nd place in the 9th-10th grade category; Izabella Bastidas received 3rd place in the 9th-10th grade category; Maxine McQuarters won 3rd place in the 1st-3rd grade category; and Naledi Khabele won 3rd place in the 4th-5th grade category. Students contributed more than 10,000 hours of service work to the Austin community. Our launch of the “1-4-1 Program”—designed with the goal of helping children in other countries increase their access to education—enabled us to bring our first student from another country (Diego Cadena, from Ecuador) to study for a year at The Khabele School. Outdoor Leadership The Khabele Outdoor Leadership Program stayed busy all year with backpacking trips to Texas destinations like Big Bend, along with weekly outings around Austin and Central Texas for hiking, rock climbing, and ropes coursing. Now in its fourth year, the program’s goals are to instill confidence, environmental awareness, ease and comfort in the outdoors. OL training focuses on self-awareness, group dynamics, and specialized skills, including camping, backpacking, rock climbing, canoeing, mountain biking, caving, ropes course, NOLS (National Outdoor Leadership School) 16-hour Wilderness First Aid course, and CPR. Early Childhood & Elementary Gardens Our gardening classes focused on cultivating ecoliteracy, good nutrition, mindfulness, and persistence. The children maintained our garden classroom and received hands-on lessons on sustainability, nutrition, botany, weather, and ecology. David Zuniga A Community for a Peaceful World Vision Statement Our Operations Our vision is to cultivate learning communities in which each and every student, parent, and staff member falls in love with learning, realizes their profound beauty, and lives with courage and authenticity. Our school is run in a dynamic, efficient, compassionate, and sustainable manner. We continually develop and perfect a model that can be successfully replicated in varied environments. Our goal is for our students, parents, and staff members to be consistently delighted with their interactions with the school operations, events, and programs. Mission Statement Our mission is to provide an effective, transformational, and communityoriented educational experience for children ages 18 months through 18 years. Our school is a community center in which people of all ages evolve in their relationship to themselves, each other, and the world. As a true community, each and every member’s full participation is honored and required. Parents We deeply appreciate the sacred role of parents and aim to create true partnerships based on trust and love. We desire to create a community tremendously supportive of the family characterized by mutual respect, creativity, and diversity. Our parents are fiercely committed to consistently modeling personal responsibility, conflict resolution, and direct communication practices. Staff Members Our staff members are master educators – immensely talented, exceptionally loving, highly self-aware, and joyful. We relate to our staff members with the honor they deserve. Our staff members are known for consistently demonstrating excellence in the areas of personal responsibility, conflict resolution, and direct communication. 801 Rio Grande Students Our school provides exceptional academics as well as a well-rounded educational experience, including the study of the arts, music, foreign languages, and physical education. Our Early Childhood and Elementary Schools have a foundation significantly influenced by Dr. Maria Montessori’s philosophy of education, while our Middle and High Schools integrate traditional, progressive and 21st century practices and methodologies. We provide a “right-action, right-time” approach, based on a pragmatic response to global trends, as well as to the particular needs of each child and classroom environment. Our long-term objective is to have each and every graduate be proficient in demonstrating the 5 Attributes: Well-being, Environmental and Cultural Awareness, Self-Generated Learning, Self-Expression, and Leadership. We purposely nurture the community’s contextual elements. These elements include school culture and teacher authenticity, as well as individual contextual elements like character, mental models, and self-concepts. As a result, we care for the spirit and heart of each child by providing preeminent character development, conflict resolution and mindfulness curricula. Austin, TX 78701 www.khabele.org
