Closes Wednesday, Dec. 2nd, 2015
Political Collectors! We are delighted with the offerings in this auction, featuring the second and final installment of the Tom Berg
collection. It's been a genuine thrill to present such a fine selection of material, including so many never before seen or seldom offered items
– a thrill that never gets old. Tom exemplified the shared passion of our community of collectors with his relentless pursuit in building such
a fine collection, and through his service to our hobby.
2016 will be a banner year for political collectors. The APIC National Convention in Harrisburg,
the Republican National Convention in Cleveland, and the Democratic National Convention in
Philadelphia are all slated for July. We eagerly look forward to attending all three events. The APIC
National promises to be the best ever, and the buzz surrounding it is electric. We plan to attend both
major party conventions: not only as an opportunity to buy and sell, but also to promote the hobby
and be a part of the hoopla and history of that uniquely American experience. If you've never
attended an APIC National, here's your chance. If you're able to attend either or both of the
presidential nominating conventions, it's an experience you won't forget.
Tom French & Nathan Sims
Let's all take advantage of this opportunity to promote our hobby, expand the membership of the
American Political Items Collectors and truly make 2016 the year of the political collector.
Online bidding and enlarged images of all lots are available at

Please read our simple rules:
1. There are several ways to bid. You can bid using the enclosed bid
sheet (mail, fax or email), you may phone in your bids, or you can bid
online at USAmericanaAuctions.com. Mail, fax, and email bids must
be received by midnight, PST, on November 30th, 2015.
2. Lots close individually. Any lot that has no bids or one bid will close
at 7pm PST, Wednesday, December 2nd. All other lots will be put
on a 30-minute clock beginning at 7pm. Once a lot goes 30 minutes
without a bid, that lot will close. If a bid is placed on any lot during
its 30-minute period, the clock on that lot will reset to 30 minutes.
Only higher competing bids will reset the clock, a currently high
bidder upping their max bid on a lot will not.
3. Phone and online bids accepted while the lot is open. The current
high bid will be revealed and you may increase that bid to the next
acceptable increment.
4. Only specific bid amounts are acceptable. Please refer to the table at
right for acceptable bid amounts. Bids received between acceptable
increments will be raised to the next acceptable increment.
5. The minimum acceptable bid on any lot is ½ of the high estimate.
6. You can request a call back on items which have a current high bid
of $500+.
7. In the case of tie bids, the first received take precedence.
8. A value estimate follows the description of each lot. Bid higher or
lower per your discretion.
9. All lots are guaranteed authentic and as described.
10. Ten day return privilege for any lot incorrectly described.
11. Payment is due upon receipt of invoice. Extended payment is
allowed if bidder has made arrangements with the auctioneer in
advance. However, any lots not paid for in full within 30 days after
the close of the auction lose return privileges, except in the case of a
dispute concerning the authenticity of an item.
12. Only our actual cost of postage and insurance will be added to each
invoice. There are no additional packaging or handling fees. Most
packages will be shipped via the U.S. Postal Service. Some larger
packages may be shipped via FedEx Ground.
13. Buyer’s fee of 15% will be added to the winning price of each lot.
14. California residents will be charged 8.25% sales tax unless valid
California resale information is provided. Resale forms sent upon
request.
15. Acceptable forms of payment: check, money order, cashier’s check.
16. The placement of a bid constitutes acceptance of these rules.

1. GENL. WASHINGTON Battersea curtain tieback, c.
1790’s. Shows Washington in his military uniform. 2”
diameter, in excellent condition. Attractive porcelain
enclosed within brass hardware. $2500-2800
4. GAL.
ANDREW
JACKSON
lidded sewing
box, circa
1828. 2 x
3 3/4 x 5”.
This fragile
and desirable
box is complete and intact. The hand-colored
paper label under the glass does have a diagonal
tear which extends from the top through the W in
ANDREW. There is a light horizontal crease in the
paper which extends from Jackson’s right cheek to
the right edge, and a small area of paper loss from
the eagle to beyond the left of the green leaves. A
rare and early display piece. $1800-2400
7. MAJOR GENL. TAYLOR BORN 1790 / GENL.
TAYLOR NEVER SURRENDERS brass shell in
lustrous, uncirculated condition with original loop for
suspension. 26 mm. The reverse lists Taylor’s military
exploits. A rare and exceptional example. $650-850
8. TAYLOR & FILLMORE GRAND NATIONAL
WHIG BANNER 1848 campaign print by J. Baillie,
New York. The frame measures 15 1/4 x 18”. The
print exhibits strong colors. We have not inspected
this out of the frame, but the matting does cover
up some of the graphics, indicating the print was
trimmed. This still displays quite well. $250-350
2. GENL. WASHINGTON Battersea curtain tieback,
c. 1790’s. Shows Washington in civilian garb.
1 7/8” diameter, in excellent condition. Attractive
porcelain enclosed within brass hardware.
$1200-1500
5. THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES. JOHN
TYLER. silk ribbon. This measures 3 x 4 1/4”. The
inscription “LIBERTY AND INDEPENDENCE” appears
on the banner over the eagle. This was originally
3 1/16 x 6 1/2”, but the bottom 2 1/4” portion has
been trimmed off. There is a pull in the ribbon to the
left of Tyler’s portrait, and a minor pull to his right.
Excellent examples of this rarity have brought $4,0006,000, but considering the condition, we’ll guide this
one accordingly. $1200-1400
3. HERO OF NEW ORLEANS. Andrew Jackson pink
luster cup plate, circa 1828. 3 3/4” diameter, and a
very pleasing example in excellent condition.
$650-750
6. Henry Clay clothing brush circa 1844.
1 1/2 x 2 1/2 x 7 3/4”. All the bristles are intact
and in excellent condition and the lettering is bright
and pronounced. The wood portion has a minor
surface crack (which is inconsequential, especially
considering this would be displayed bristle side
up). A rare and exceptional display piece typical of
other campaign brushes from the 1830’s - 1840’s
campaigns, although this is the first Henry Clay
example we’ve ever seen. $400-600
9. Cass & Butler GRAND NATIONAL DEMOCRATIC
BANNER print by N. Currier from the 1848 campaign.
10 x 14”. Light overall toning and an area of staining
lower right corner. A better than average example
from a very tough candidate that deserves to be matted
and framed. $550-650
14. Fremont & Cochrane GRAND BANNER OF THE RADICAL
DEMOCRACY, FOR 1864 campaign print published by Currier &
Ives. An exceptional example in excellent condition with bright,
vibrant colors and extra wide margins, this measures a full 13 1/2 x
17 7/8”. This would display beautifully matted and framed. Fremont
items from his short-lived 1864 campaign are quite rare. Lincoln
dismissed the threat of a Fremont challenge in 1864, especially
after hearing that only some 400 persons had attended the Radical
Republican nominating convention which was held in Cleveland on
May 31. The Fremont forces would later cut a deal with President
Lincoln: Fremont would withdraw from the campaign if the President
would remove Postmaster General Montgomery Blair, who was
despised by the Radical Republicans. Additionally, It’s quite likely
that Fremont feared the possibility of a George McClellan presidency.
$900-1000
10. FRANKLIN PIERCE. WILLIAM R. KING.
DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATES FOR PRESIDENT
AND VICE-PRESIDENT campaign print by E.C.
Kellogg, 1852. 11 1/8 x 14 1/2”. An exceptional
example with very faint discoloration. Deserves to
be matted and framed. $650-750
11. GENERAL FRANKLIN PIERCE PRESIDENT OF
THE UNITED STATES pewter lid to a shaving mirror.
3” diameter. The edge of the rim which originally fit
over the mirror portion is intact but has been folded
flat. Even though this refers to “President” Pierce,
it’s likely this was made as an 1852 campaign piece.
Despite the fact that this is only the lid, it’s in excellent
condition and an exceedingly rare display piece. We
found only one other example which was offered by
Heritage Auctions in 2009 and fetched over $3,500.
$1400-1600
12. J.C. FREMONT ferrotype
from the 1856 campaign.
Tintype in a 1” brass bezel,
and in excellent condition,
but the pin on the reverse has
been replaced. A superior
example. $700-800
13. Fremont &
Dayton GRAND
NATIONAL
REPUBLICAN
BANNER. N. Currier
campaign print
from 1856 with
an inscription at
the bottom: “FREE
LABOR, FREE
SPEECH, FREE
TERITORY” (sic.)
10 x 14” and in
generally excellent
condition with
light overall toning.
$550-650
15. ABRAHAM LINCOLN. / HANNIBAL
HAMLIN. large and impressive
40 mm. donut ferrotype. Both sides are
in excellent condition and easily grade
an 8 1/2+. Faint, typical surface crazing
can only be seen at an angle and detract
minimally. A very desirable ferrotype
with an undeniable presence.
$2500-3000
16. ABRAHAM LINCOLN. / HANNIBAL HAMLIN
small 24 mm. donut ferrotype from the 1860
campaign. The Lincoln side is in excellent, flawless
condition and grades a 9 1/2. The Hamlin side
exhibits faint, typical surface crazing when held at
an angle. This distinctive ferro retains its full silvered
brass finish. $850-950
19. LINCOLN / ANDREW
JOHNSON rare, large 26 mm.
ferrotype. The Lincoln tintype
is in excellent condition and
grades an 8. The Johnson
tintype has some minor
darkness to the left of his
portrait, and , to a lesser extent,
on his cheek. There is some
damage on the brass enclosure:
three of the scalloped prongs
at top are missing. A very rare
ferrotype that displays well.
$1200-1400
20. Distinctive oval Lincoln ferrotype from the
1860 campaign. 3/4 x 7/8”. The
tintype is in essentially excellent
condition with just a tiny divot
below Lincoln’s hairline at right
and grades an 8 - 8 1/2. The pin
attachment on the back is missing.
$850-950
17. ABRAHAM LINCOLN 1860 / HANNIBAL
HAMLIN 1860 24 mm. ferrotype. Both sides are in
choice, flawless condition and the brass encasement
retains its original luster. An exceptionally choice
example that should command a premium.
$1200-1400
18. ABRAHAM LINCOLN 1860. / HANNIBAL
HAMLIN. 1860 25 mm. ferrotype. The Lincoln tintype
is in excellent condition and grades an 8 1/2. The
Hamlin portrait is a little fuzzy with a dark spot to
his right. The brass encasement retains its original,
attractive luster. $450-550
21. FOR PRESIDENT 1864 A. LINCOLN. 24 mm.
ferrotype stickpin. In excellent
condition with original stickpin
and clasp. This grades a 9 9 1/2. A trivial diagonal flaw
above Lincoln’s left shoulder
detracts little, and this minor
defect is the only reason this
desirable ferrotype doesn’t
approach a nearly perfect grade
of “10”. $1100-1300
22. LINCOLN 17 mm. ferrotype
stickpin. In generally excellent
condition with a minor divot in
Lincoln’s beard that detracts little.
The tintype is a bit dark. Still a nice
example that retains its original
stickpin. $600-700
23. Exceedingly rare Lincoln & Johnson 1864 campaign broadside entitled “Union Platform ADOPTED BY THE NATIONAL CONVENTION AT BALTIMORE JUNE
7th 1864.” A summarized text of the Platform within the center shield ends with “For President, Abraham Lincoln. For Vice-President, Andrew Johnson.” Patriotic
graphics adorn the perimeter and include portraits of Lincoln & Johnson, General Grant and General Sherman, as well as images of Miss Liberty and a kneeling
slave, and the inscriptions “UNITED WE STAND, DIVIDED WE FALL”, “FREE HOME - SLAVERY - LIBERTY - EMANCIPATION - VICTORY - JUSTICE”. What makes
this broadside especially desirable is that it has portraits of Lincoln and Johnson, and there exist only a handful of posters or broadsides as such. This lithograph was
printed by Kurz & Nelke in Chicago and is identified as such along the bottom edge. We know of only two other examples in existence: one is in an institution and
another was sold by Heritage Auctions several years ago for over $19,000. The Heritage example had full margins and measured 17 3/4 x 23 3/4”. Our example
is 15 3/4 x 20 3/4”, an indication that this was trimmed 1 - 1 1/2” along the edges. Minor toning along the left edge and light staining near the center and top right
corner, as well as to the left of Lincoln’s portrait. A rare opportunity to own one of the finest broadsides we’ve ever handled. $8000-9000
24. A. LINCOLN 21 mm.
ferrotype stickpin in excellent
condition with original stickpin.
A patent date of “1861” appears
to the right of the tintype. In
excellent, flawless condition,
void of the typical surface
crazing. Grades a 9 - 9 1/2 and
should command a premium.
$900-1100
29. JOHN BELL. / EDWARD EVERETT small variety
25 mm. “donut” ferrotype. Both sides are in bright,
excellent condition with smooth glossy surfaces and
both merit a grade of 9+. The border retains nearly
100% of its original silvered finish. Really a choice
example. $550-650
34. JOHN C. BRECKINRIDGE 1860 / JOSEPH
LANE 1860 24 mm. ferrotype. Both tintypes are
in pristine condition with smooth, glossy surfaces,
and the brass component retains its original luster.
If it weren’t for a area of minor tarnish on the Lane
side along the edge at 5:00, this would approach a
perfect grade of “10”. $1000-1200
25. STEPHEN A. DOUGLAS 1860 / HERSCHEL V.
JOHNSON 1860 24 mm. ferrotype. The Douglas
tintype is in near mint, flawless condition with a
smooth glossy surface. The Johnson tintype exhibits
some surface “rubbing”. The brass component is
bright and lustrous. $300-350
30. FOR PRESIDENT, JOHN BELL. FOR VICE
PRESIDENT, EDWARD EVERETT. “The Union and
the Constitution” glazed cotton flag. 7 7/8 x 11 3/8”.
Except for one stain which is confined within the top
white stripe, this is in bright, excellent condition.
$2400-2800
26. STEPHEN A. DOUGLAS 1860 / HERSCHEL V.
JOHNSON 1860 23 mm. ferrotype. Both tintypes
are in excellent condition with smooth, glossy
surfaces. The brass component is lustrous. Only a
small spot of tarnish on the brass to left of Douglas’
portrait prevents this from approaching a grade of
9 1/2+. A choice example. $500-600
31. JOHN BELL 1860 / EDWARD EVERETT 1860
24 mm. ferrotype. Both tintypes are in near mint,
flawless condition with smooth, glossy surfaces.
The brass component is equally nice and retains its
original luster. It would be a challenge to find a better
example. $625-675
27. Adele Douglas and Stephen A. Douglas tintype
enclosed in a decorative 20 x 23 mm. oval brass shell.
The pin on the back is missing. Faint waviness in the
tintype is visible at an angle, and there’s a scratch in
the tintype above Mrs. Douglas’ portrait and a tiny
chip on her right cheek. Still, a rare piece that displays
well. $400-500
32. JOHN C. BRECKINRIDGE 1860 / JOSEPH
LANE 1860 superb 25 mm. ferrotype. Both tintypes
are in near mint condition with smooth, glossy
surfaces. The brass component retains its original
luster. An outstanding example that easily grades a
9 1/2+. $900-1100
28. STEPHEN A. DOUGLAS / HERSCHEL V.
JOHNSON 25 mm. ferrotype with plush border and
original string loop for suspension. Both tintypes are
in excellent, flawless condition with smooth, glossy
surfaces, although just a bit dark, as made. $350-400
33. BRECKINRIDGE AND LANE. pristine side-by-side
ferrotype in a beaded brass bezel. 21 mm. The tintype
is in bright, flawless, near perfect
condition with a smooth, glossy
finish and likely the finest example
known. The stickpin on the back
is gone, but could be rather easily
replaced if you chose to do so.
$3000-3500
35. Magnificent McClellan brooch with an oval
tintype set in a hollow 1 1/4 x 1 5/8” brass brooch
with original T-pin on the back. Raised images on the
brass feature an eagle above and a cannon below, with
twelve conjoined ovals listing significant Civil War
battles. Lustrous surfaces, and all components are in
pristine condition. An absolute KNOCKOUT in every
respect! $3500-4500+
36. M’CLELLAN 16 mm. ferrotype
with original stickpin. Very faint
crazing is visible on the tintype
when held at an angle, and there’s
a tiny chip to the left of the M in
M’CLELLAN at the edge of the tintype.
The imperfections are minor and this
easily grades an 8+ overall. $350-400
37. M’CLELLAN 21 mm. ferrotype
stickpin in pristine condition with
an 1861 patent date. A series of
stars adorns the perimeter. The
tintype is in flawless, near mint
condition with a smooth, glossy
surface, and the brass component
retains its original and attractive
luster. A real gem that should
command a premium. $800-900
38. McClellan tintype features the General in his
military uniform, housed in a 3/4 x 1 1/16” brass
gem frame. The tintype is just a touch dark (as
made), but in near mint condition with a smooth
surface. An unusual pose of McClellan. $400-500

43. GEN. U.S. GRANT
ferrotype stickpin. Tintype of
Grant in excellent condition
with a smooth, glossy surface
is enclosed in an ornate
1 1/6” brass bezel with
original stickpin. Yet another
gem in choice, flawless
condition. $550-650
44. GRANT ferrotype with
two-toned purple and blue paper
borders, set in a brass bezel.
22 mm. Minor bubbling is visible
when held at an angle, and the
stickpin on the back is missing.
Still displays nicely and
grades an 8+. $175-225
39. McCLELLAN & PENDLETON GRAND
NATIONAL DEMOCRATIC BANNER printed by
Currier & Ives. 10 x 14” with light toning and paper
chips (which could be easily matted out) in the upper
margin. Faint toning above Pendleton’s portrait which
extends from above his head into the flags. Overall,
a better example than most and among the tougher
Grand National Banners. $450-550
40. GRANT & COLFAX jugate ferrotype stickpin in
superb condition.
29 mm. Both tintypes
are in flawless, excellent
condition with smooth,
glossy surfaces. With
original stickpin. If it
weren’t for some trivial
tarnish on the brass rim,
this would approach a
perfect grade of “10”.
$800-900
41. E PLURIBUS UNUM in embossed letters on this
ornate, thick, 1 1/16 x 1 1/4” brass shell bezel. Oval
tintype of Grant is in pristine
condition with a smooth
surface. The stickpin on the
back is missing and there’s a
trivial dent in the brass rim
surrounding the tintype. If it
weren’t for the dent, this gem
would easily approach a grade
of 9 1/2+. A superb example.
$300-400
42. “CLUB BADGE” is the inscription on the
banner at the base of this desirable 1 1/2 x
2 3/8” badge. Oval tintype of Grant is in pristine
condition with a
smooth, glossy
surface. The brass
components are
also in excellent
condition. We’ve
handled two
badges similar to
this, but both with
the inscription
BOYS IN BLUE.
This variety
seldom turns up
and is especially
desirable in
such excellent
condition.
$1000-1250
45. Unusual GRANT ferrotype features the General
wearing a rather unusual hat - not the typical widebrimmed Civil War officer’s hat, but rather more of
a “flaps up” General Sheridan style.
17 mm., in excellent condition,
but a bit dark (as made). This has
no pin or attachment on the back,
nor does it appear that it ever did.
$275-375
48. SEYMOUR. BLAIR. oval

decorative 1 x 1 1/16” brass
bezel. Near mint condition, but
the pin is missing (although the
clasp is intact). $375-475
49. OUR CHOICE FOR PRESIDENT / FOR VICE
PRESIDENT Seymour / Blair ferrotype. 27 mm.
with bold portraits. The brass is in bright, lustrous,
excellent condition. The Seymour tintype is in
essentially excellent condition with a smooth, glossy
surface, and just a trivial pinhole size chip along
the extreme edge at 3:00. The Blair tintype is near
mint with just some very faint and minor bubbling
along the left perimeter. Easily grades a 9 overall.
$425-475
50. SEYMOUR 23 mm. ferrotype
stickpin in near mint condition
with original pin. The tintype is in
excellent condition with a smooth,
glossy surface, and the brass bezel
retains its original, full luster. An
exceptional, flawless example.
$300-350
51. Horace Greeley lapel
stud ferrotype. Tintype
enclosed in an ornate shieldshaped brass stud. 1 x 1 1/4”.
There is some light diagonal
rubbing above Greeley’s
head, and some tiny, scattered
nicks. Quite rare. $475-575
46. GRANT AND COLFAX NATIONAL UNION
REPUBLICAN BANNER, 1868. print by Currier &
Ives. 9 5/8 x 14”. Light overall toning is slightly more
pronounced along the extreme perimeter. Colors are
still relatively vibrant. 1/2” tear center right, a 1” tear
just above the eagle, and a 2” tear center left. This
is among the tougher Grand National Banners and
deserves to be matted and framed. $550-650
47. Grant & Colfax jugate cardboard collar from
the 1868 campaign. About 1 1/2” tall and 4 1/2”
diameter. Quite rare, this fragile piece is intact and
complete. Very light, scattered foxing. $350-450
52. Hayes oval tintype

along the extreme
edge at 1:00.
$400-500

shield shell with original
stickpin. 1 1/26 x 1 3/16”.

that this amount was paid
on March 6, 1897. A small

317. Previously unknown real photo Theodore
Roosevelt and Booker T. Washington EQUALITY
1 1/2" pinback portraying Roosevelt and
Washington dining at the White House on October
16, 1901. The 1 1/4" varieties depict a cruder
likeness of Washington drinking liquor and are
thought to exploit racist sentiments, but this and
another 1 1/2"
version were
issued to celebrate
the event and the
notion of racial
equality. This
example differs
considerably from
the other known
1 1/2" pinback,
with notably
different portraits
and background, and a more lavish spread on the
dinner table. An extraordinary find purchased a few
years ago at a country auction near Kansas City for the sum of $20. Filled back is stamped "O.G.
HURSTON PALMER HOUSE PIN-LOCK PAT'D
MAY 31 '98." In flawless, excellent condition.

325. ROOSEVELT BRENNAN CHANDLER MILLER
brass 4-leaf clover screw-back stud, circa 1904. After
some diligent research (thanks to Dave Quintin), we
found that this odd stud was issued by the Clover
Club of Philadelphia to honor President Roosevelt as
well as three of the more prominent members of the
Club. The Clover Club hosted every President from
Cleveland to Wilson, claimed Samuel Clemens as an
honorary member, and described itself as “A Club for
Social Enjoyments, the Cultivation of Literary Tastes,
and the Encouragement of Hospitable Intercourse”.

condition. $150-200
330. OUR PRESIDENT / FOR
CONGRESS EDWARD DE
V. MORRELL coattail ribbon
badge promoting Theodore
Roosevelt for president and
Edward de Veaux Morrell for
Congress (Pennsylvania), 1904.
The TR cello is 1 1/4”, the
Morrell cello is 1 3/4”. There’s
a minor crimping inconsistency
on the TR (as made), otherwise
excellent condition. $125-150
331. Outstanding 1 3/4” Roosevelt & Fairbanks
cartoon pinback from 1904 by famed political
cartoonist Clifford Berryman (facsimile signature
"Berryman" at 4:00) with caricatures of President
Theodore Roosevelt and Vice Presidential candidate
Charles Fairbanks prancing along in a two-man
parade. A Teddy Bear on stilts is holding a banner
which reads FOUR YEARS MORE OF THEODORE
while clutching TR’s hand. A cartoon by Berryman
entitled “Drawing the Line in Mississippi” in the
November 16, 1902 edition of the Washington Post
depicted TR showing compassion for a small bear
cub. The cartoon inspired New York store owner
Morris Michtom to create a new toy called the
Teddy Bear, which became (and remains) a national
phenomenon. Graphics and rarity make this one of
the most sought-after and irresistible pinbacks ever
produced. This example is in excellent condition
with its original safety pin and TORSCH & FRANZ
BADGE. CO. Baltimore backpaper. $8000-9000
332. RECEPTION May 4, 1903 silk
ribbon welcoming President Theodore
Roosevelt to a gathering (in Denver,

of the RECEPTION Committee. TR
delivered a speech in which he praised
the virtues of the men who fought in
the Civil War, remarking: “...a good
American is a good American from
one end of this country to the other.”
2 3/8 x 9”, in near mint condition.
$125-175
333. Theodore
Roosevelt /

will run without fail.” A very light and minor stain
bottom left corner, otherwise excellent condition.
$100-125
336. Theodore Roosevelt “Return from Africa”
toby mug circa 1910. This 7 1/2” tall mug was
made by “THE TOBY
POTTERIES NEW YORK”
(on the underside) and
is in flawless, excellent
condition. TR is holding
a rifle in one hand and a
book entitled “AFRICA”
in the other. The large
handle
is in the
form of an
elephant.
A terrific
and iconic
display
piece.
$700-800
337. TEDDY CLUB NONINTOXICATING BEVERAGE
10 3/4” ONE QUART bottle
with paper label featuring a
smiling image of Theodore
Roosevelt. The bottle is in
excellent condition - the
label shows scuffing and
scattered tears. Made by
“MEYER MERCANTILE CO.
MANUFACTURERS OMAHA
NEB.” We are guessing that
this is from the early-mid
1910’s, as the Progressive
Party advocated a drug
prohibition especially aimed
at alcohol (and cocaine).
Very unusual - the first we’ve
seen. $150-200
338. FOR PRESIDENT

Parker & Davis large double-sided advertising promo
for the “OPEN WORK BANNERS CAMPAIGN OF

this retains its vivid colors and - except for two tape
marks on the left and right edges on the reverse - is in
excellent condition. This has been nicely framed with
double-paneled glass such that the front and back can
be seen. $350-450
351. The SMILE of Prosperity
terrific 7/8” pinback from the
1908 campaign with a portrait of
a smiling Taft. Faint edge stains
detract little. That smile would
vanish as the contentious 1912
campaign approached. $200-250
352. Bold, patriotic
graphics on this 1 1/4”
Taft beauty from 1908.
In bright, excellent

graphic 1 1/4” Taft and a
prime example of graphic
excellence in pinback
button designs, which
reached its zenith in 1908.
In excellent condition with
a Steiner Engraving Co. St.
Louis backpaper and an
Ehrman Mfg. Co. Boston
inscription around the curl.
$550-650+
349. Bold and graphic

350. Bold and graphic
1 1/4” Taft pinback from
1908. A second example
of the previous lot, also in

353. Very rare 1 1/4” Taft pinback from 1908. This
same pin appeared in our Auction #23 (featuring the
Marshall Goldberg collection) in 2008 and brought a
whopping $2,400. The green and blue coloring on
this retains its brightness but the red is slightly faded.
$500-600+

$150-175
357. REPUBLICAN
COUNTY COMMITTEE
TAFT HUGHES ribbon badge

generally excellent condition.
$150-200
354. 1 3/4” Taft pinback from the Alaska YukonPacific
Exposition in
Seattle, dated
September 30,
1909. Taft
would visit
the Exposition
on that day.
Very light,
scattered stains
are visible in
the white field.
$125-150
355. Very rare 1 1/4” James S. Sherman for Vice
President pinback from the 1908 campaign. There
is a VERY faint stain along the edge near 12:00,
and another at 7:00 which blends into the red
background and is barely noticeable, but this rarity
has great graphics and retains its bright, vivid colors.
James Schoolcraft Sherman was the Republican
Party’s choice for VP in 1908 and 1912. Although
Sherman was suffering
from a worsening kidney
condition, he did deliver
his acceptance speech,
against his doctors’ advice.
And as if President Taft
wasn’t already miserable
enough throughout
his doomed reelection
campaign with the
Progressive Party challenge, Sherman would die just
days before the election, and Nicholas Murray Butler
was designated to receive the electoral votes that
Sherman would have received. Those electoral votes
(from Utah and Vermont) totaled a dismal eight, and
Taft would finish in third place behind Woodrow
Wilson and Theodore Roosevelt. To date, Sherman
would be the last Vice President to die in office. Prior
to Sherman, six other Vice Presidents died while in
office - can you name them? $275-375
358. WHO IS GOING TO WIN THE RACE? terrific
mechanical postcard: “Roll wheels on table and
see candidates run”. Bryan is leading Taft on this
race towards the “WHITE HOUSE”. In excellent
condition, especially considering the wheels usually
get creased and worn from use. Postally used.
$150-200
359. BILLY POSSUM cast nickel figurine. 4 5/8”
tall and in excellent condition. There is a cast metal
strap in the underside of the base which is threaded,
suggesting this may be a very early example of an
automobile radiator or hood attachment. $400-500
360. Taft “BIILIBOIS” billiken in its original 3 1/4 x
3 1/4 x 5 1/4” box. There is some light soiling on the
outer lid, otherwise excellent condition. The paper
label applied to the inside lid reads: “Call me Bill, I
like it; I’m, a “Big Stick” artist too - So long’s I keep a
smiling I’ve no time to feel blue. Just wait! my weight
is mighty, I’ll get votes by the pound, And though
I’m not a
sprinter
I’ll keep
the others
moving
‘round.
Billiboi T.”

a Whitehead & Hoag Co.
backpaper. $150-200

368. TAMMANY HALL WILSON SULZER
FRAWLEY HARRISON GREENBERG AND VICTORY
coattail ribbon badge promoting Woodrow Wilson
for president, William Sulzer for governor, James J.
Frawley for U.S. Senator, and additional New York
local candidates, 1912. Sulzer
was elected and initiated a
more populist, reform-oriented
administration. The Tammany
political machine demanded
state appointments from within
their ranks - when Sulzer
resisted, Tammany launched
a successful impeachment
campaign, and the Governor
was removed from office on
October 17, 1913 (succeeded
by Lieutenant Governor
Martin Glynn). It’s interesting
that Senator Frawley (whose
name appears on this ribbon)
was appointed chairman of
a Joint Committee formed
to find “misconduct” on the
part of Governor Sulzer.
Sulzer would make an angry
statement after his removal
from office: “I impeach the
criminal conspirators, these
looters and grafters, for stealing the taxpayers’
money. That is what I NEVER did.” 1 7/8 x 6”, in
excellent condition with a brass T-pin. A scarce
badge with political intrigue. $200-250
369. WILSON AND MAJOR ribbon badge promoting
Woodrow Wilson for president
and Elliott W. Major for vice
president. A 1 3/4” celluloid
disk is suspended from a patriotic
silk ribbon by a celluloid/brass
DELEGATE badge. Elliott was
elected Governor of Missouri in
1912, and served until 1917. This
could be from 1912, but more
likely a 1916 Democratic National
Convention souvenir (held in St.
Louis) boosting Elliott as a “favorite
son” VP hopeful. 2 1/4 x 5 1/4”
overall. The ribbon has some
aging, but the badge and celluloid
components are in excellent
condition. $150-200
370. UNCLE SAM WOOD-ROW WILSON TO THE
WHITE HOUSE postcard dated 1912. Shows Uncle
Sam and Wilson in a canoe marked “PROGRESSIVE”,
while “T.R.” is swimming close by and “TAFT”
appears as a tiny speck languishing far behind. A great
postcard in excellent, unused condition. $125-175
371. PRES. WILSON
MEETING SEATTLE
SEPT. 13, 1919 3 x
5 1/4” silk ribbon worn
by an USHER from an
event in which President
Wilson attended as part
of a tour to encourage
American participation
in the League of Nations.
Wilson would suffer a
stroke at the end of his
exhausting tour while
in Pueblo, Colorado,
on October 2, 1919.
In excellent condition.
$100-125
372. FOR GOVERNOR WOODROW WILSON rare
20 x 25 1/2” framed campaign poster from 1910. In
flawless, excellent condition. $800-1000
373. LA VICTOIRE 14 JUILLET 1918 1 1/4”
pinback in French with portraits of President Wilson,
French military commander Ferdinand Foch, and
General John J. Pershing. This appears to be just
a bit faded, but quite
scarce and in otherwise
excellent condition. It’s
interesting to note that
the date (July 14, 1918)
on this button coincides
with the day that T.R.’s
son Quentin Roosevelt
was killed, shot down
over France. $100-150
379. WARREN G.
HARDING deceptively
tough 1 1/4” pinback in
excellent condition.
$250-300
374. OUR VICTORIOUS LEADERS 1 3/4”
double-sided watch fob with portraits of President
Wilson, President Poincare of France, King Albert
of Belgium, King Emanuel of Italy, and King George
of England. An advertising give-away from the
NORTHERN FUR CO. in St. Louis. In excellent
condition. $150-175
375. TAMAQUA DEMONSTRATION 1 1/4” pinback
from a patriotic rally in
Tamaqua, Pennsylvania,
hailing President Wilson
and General John J.
Pershing. Very unusual
- the first we’ve handled and in excellent condition
with a KEYSTONE BADGE
CO. READING, PA.
backpaper. $225-275
380. FOR PRESIDENT WARREN G. HARDING
handsome little 1” pinback in excellent condition
with a BASTIAN BROS. CO.
ROCHESTER, NY inscription
around the curl. We’ve seen
this same pin in 1 1/4” and
1 3/4” sizes, but, curiously,
never in this smaller 1” variety.
$150-200
381. AMERICA FIRST HARDING AND KENDALL
CLUB 1” coattail pinback from
DES MOINES, IOWA, promoting
Harding for president and
Nathan Kendall for governor .
A bit off-center but in otherwise
bright, excellent condition
with a Whitehead & Hoag Co.
backpaper. $150-200
382. SOUVENIR PRESIDENT HARDING’S
PACIFIC COAST TOUR 1 1/4” pinback. Harding
would die at the end of this tour while at the Palace
Hotel in San Francisco from what was reported to
be either a case of “food poisoning”, a cerebral
hemorrhage, or congestive heart failure - the
consensus is that the
latter is most likely the
cause of death. Bright
colors with just a hint
of faint discoloration
around the curl. A
superior example of a
pinback that’s almost
never found in perfect
condition. $200-250
376. 1 3/4” FOR PRESIDENT CHAS. E. HUGHES
celluloid with cardboard backing. The celluloid is
notched at 12:00 and 6:00 and a leather watch fob
strap is inserted through the two notches to make
this a kind of “bracelet”, as found. An incredible
rarity we’ve never seen or even knew existed.
$500-750+
377. Key 7/8” Harding & Coolidge
jugate pinback. In excellent
condition with a Whitehead
& Hoag Co. backpaper, and a
rarity we feel has always been
undervalued. $1400-1600
378. HARDING FOR
PRESIDENT popular
1 1/4” pinback features
a smiling portrait of
Warren G. In bright,
excellent condition.
$400-500
384. PRESIDENT HARDING
4TH OF JULY 1923 scarce
ribbon badge welcoming the
President to Portland, Oregon,
and worn by a member of the
DECORATIONS committee.
Harding would leave that same
day for Alaska, becoming the
first President to do so. 2 1/4 x
5 1/4” and in generally excellent
condition. $100-125
385. SOUVENIR PRESIDENT
HARDING’S PACIFIC COAST
TOUR ribbon badge. The 1 3/4
x 4 3/4” ribbon is in excellent
condition. The 1 1/4” pinback
has very light stains around the
perimeter, typical for this cello.
$150-200
386. Visit of the President
of the United States silk
ribbon welcoming “Warren
G. Harding and Mrs.
Harding” to Kansas City,
Missouri, June 22, 1923.
3 x 7 3/4”, light soiling.
Quite rare - the first we’ve
seen. $125-175
383. Outstanding Harding
& Coolidge jugate pocket
watch from the 1920
campaign. 2” wide. Aside
from a trivial area of wear on
the reverse of the chromeplated brass case (which
features an American flag and
the inscription “HARDING
FOR PRESIDENT”), this rarity
is in excellent condition and it still works, which is
remarkable, considering these
were relatively cheaply-made
watches. This brought just
over $7,500 in a 1998 Al
Anderson Auction, and that’s
the most recent sales record we
can find. $6000-7000
2,000+ different fixed price items
from Washington to Obama available now at
387. Playing cards from the 1920 Presidential campaign made by the Liberty Games Company in Versailles, Missouri. This remarkable deck is complete with 53 cards,
all three original inserts with instructions and an explanation of the game, and comes in its original box. Each card has a political motif and/or inscription. There are four
different “Jester” cards representing the Democratic, Republican, Socialist, and Farmer-Labor Party, but the eight most significant cards have portraits of the presidential
and vice presidential candidates of the aforementioned parties, including: Cox and Roosevelt, Harding and Coolidge, Eugene Debs and Seymour Stedman, and P.P.
Christensen and Max S. Hayes. It’s interesting that the Prohibition ticket of Aaron Watkins and Marie Brehm (the first legally qualified woman candidate for a national
office) were not included, although the Prohibition Party did finish fifth in the 1920 election. A little booklet is included which explains the reason this game of “49”
was produced: “...to place before the public, in a sketched and abbreviated form, the principals, characters, emblems, and the form of the four (4) principal parties under
independent forms set forth in skeleton prosody and sketched art.” There is a tiny 1/4 x 1/2” chip out of the corner of the box, but this is in otherwise mint condition
throughout, and every single card is in pristine condition. A terrific item (how many campaign pieces have you ever seen that picture Farmer-Labor candidates Christensen
& Hayes?) and among our favorite offerings in this auction. $400-500+
393. COOLIDGE AND BINGHAM CLUB rare
7/8” pinback from NEW HAVEN, Connecticut,
promoting Coolidge for
president and Hiram
Bingham for governor.
Bingham was elected, but
was probably more well
known as the man who
claimed to have discovered

Who the heck was Joe Smith?
Joe Smith was a fictitious VP candidate whose name
was placed into nomination by Nebraska Delegate
Terry Carpenter at the 1956 Republican National
Convention in San Francisco, in an effort to show some
opposition to Richard Nixon's re-nomination. An
unsuccessful “Dump Nixon” movement at the RNC was
spearheaded by former Minnesota Governor Harold
Stassen, who tried in vain to convince Massachusetts
Governor Christian Herter to challenge Nixon for the
vice presidential nomination. There are a least a dozen
or more different “Joe Smith” pinbacks distributed
primarily by the pro-Stevenson forces in an effort to
poke a little fun at the Republicans.

the Republicans controlled the White
House. The slogan also appears on

Governor of California”. The Commies almost
succeeded - Pat Brown would win, prompting a
pathetic Nixon to deliver an embittered diatribe
directed at the press, whining “You don’t have
Nixon to kick around any more because, gentlemen,
this is my last press conference.” Yet another broken
promise. Except for a handful of relatively common

in association with
suffragette Lucy Stone).

rare, and aside from
some very faint stains, is

$500-600
665. FIRST ANNIVERSARY OF THE American Equal Rights
Association rare and early 5 1/4 x 8 1/2” single-sided flier
written by Lucretia Mott and dated March 12th, 1867.
“The object of this Association is to secure Equal Rights
to all American Citizens, especially the Right of Suffrage,
irrespective of race, color or sex.” Great content concerning
not only the rights of women, but also of “...the black man
(who) is still denied the crowning right of citizenship, even
in the nominally free states, though the fires of civil war have
melted the chains of chattelism, and a hundred battlefields
attest his courage and patriotism.” The bottom lines
encourage communications and donations “...to be addressed

York.” An historical document in excellent condition (with
two horizontal folds, as mailed). $400-500

667. “The ‘Bloomers’ in Hyde Park, or an
Extraordinary Exhibition for 1852” 7 1/4 x 17 1/4”
hand-colored print from London. New Yorker
Amelia Jenks Bloomer - a temperance and suffrage
activist - popularized the style. In his terrific book
entitled Women’s Suffrage Memorabilia, Ken Florey
explains: “...the new form of dress was a woman’s
rights issue, not only because of Bloomer’s suffrage
sympathies, but also because it addressed the topic
of women’s freedom in terms of her right to be
comfortable in what she wore.” Four vertical folds,
and light stains that are confined mostly to the upper
left corner. $200-300
668. Belva Lockwood hand-written letter and

674. WE THE PEOPLE HONOR MARTIN LUTHER
KING 12 1/4 x 19” broadside poster from a political/
memorial rally held at the Federal Building in San
Francisco four days after King’s death. The event was
sponsored by the Peace and Freedom Party, which
grew out of the Black Panther movement in 1967. The
Panthers/Peace & Freedom Party clearly differed with
Dr. King on tactics (the Panthers believed that MLK’s
non-violent
campaign had
failed - that the
“traditional’”
civil rights
movement
would take
too long to be
implemented,
if at all),
making this
poster all
the more
interesting,
as the more
radical
activists in
the civil rights
movement
took a moment
to memorialize
Martin Luther
King while demanding that “ALL BLACK POLITICAL
LEADERS MUST BE SET FREE NOW”, and also
encouraging businesses in San Francisco to close on
the day of the Monday memorial. Very rare. This was
posted and there are a couple of tape marks on the top
center edge, otherwise excellent condition. $250-350

excellent condition.
$100-150
677. “WORKINGMEN OF EVERY COUNTRY UNITE
TOGETHER TO DEFEND YOUR RIGHTS / WE
REQUIRE 8 HOURS FOR WORK 8 HOURS FOR
OUR OWN INSTRUCTION AND 8 HOURS FOR
REPOSE”. 2” diameter pocket watch from the 1910’s.
This no longer works but is in otherwise excellent
condition. A terrific item from labor’s turbulent
and troubled times during the early part of the 20th
century. $500-600
678. free AMERICA’S SMITH ACT VICTIMS
SENTENCED FOR THEIR IDEAS! 11 X 17” paper
poster portraying black and white hands clutching
prison bars with a scene of protesters carrying signs
as they march toward the White House, and urging
citizens to “Wire President Truman - NOW!” The
Smith Act (known officially as the Alien Registration
Act of 1940) set criminal penalties for advocating
the overthrow
of the U.S.
government
and required
all non-citizen
adult residents
to register with
the government.
