Welcome to the Spring NES Pharmacy News incorporating The Programme of Events.
New Educational Resources.................................................................................................................................. 4
In this edition we are pleased to provide the details
of our events throughout spring and summer as
well as the usual updates on the key NES Pharmacy
work streams.
Portal users with NHS health boards. This is to reduce
the administrative burden for you and the health
boards. More information is included in the letter
accompanying this edition of Pharmacy News.
New Developments..................................................................................................................................................... 6
The national topic for this session will focus on mini
clinical updates to provide practitioners with recent
clinical updates in Cardiology, Respiratory Disease and
Diabetes. These sessions will be led by local experts
in these areas, and will update you on any recent
changes in practice and the evidence behind new
developments.
In the near future, you will find indentifying and
accessing NES resources, and demonstrating your
learning achievements, even easier as NES undergoes
a process of Digital Transformation. Functions that are
currently undertaken in existing systems (e.g. Portal,
ePortfolio etc) will be soon be streamlined into the
new NES Digital Platform. This will allow NES to “push”
relevant resources and information to you. We will, of
course, keep you updated to ensure that the transition
is seamless. To learn more, please view the following
video vimeo.com/123186702.
The 15 Second Update.............................................................................................................................................. 9
The New Developments pages outline the training
being developed for the pharmacists being employed
in GP practices and Out of Hours working, as well as
information about the updated Adverse Drug Reaction
monitoring resources to help train community
pharmacists in the reporting of adverse drug reactions.
The educational resources are available as distance or
e-learning packs including new virtual patient e-cases.
We are continuing to promote inter-professional
courses with GPs and to provide courses aimed
specifically at pharmacy technicians. All educational
resources are available either via the educational
resources section of the NES Pharmacy website or via
Portal: www.portal.scot.nhs.uk. Portal contains full
details of each course, including learning outcomes
and a course description; all you need to do now is
log on and book those events which will help meet
your CPD needs. Please note that for mandatory
educational resources, we may share a list of successful
Following on from the departures of Professor Rose
Marie Parr and Arlene Brailey, there have been further
changes to the team at NES Pharmacy and these are
detailed in the Bulletin board.
Please continue to give us your feedback following
each course using the online form; this can now be
completed on smartphones and tablets, and will only
take 5 minutes. Your feedback is extremely valuable to
us and helps us continually improve NES courses.
We hope you find all these learning opportunities to
be useful and enjoyable in supporting your CPD during
the spring and summer months. We look forward to
seeing you at some of our local events.

Pharmacists in GP practices
Scottish review of Primary Care Out of Hours Services
There is an acknowledged current workforce shortage
of General Practitioners in Scotland estimated to
escalate to a shortage of 900 GPs by 2020 according
to figures compiled by the Royal College of General
Practitioners (RCGP).
The Scottish Government have reacted to this with
provision of funding of £16.2million for 140 Clinical
Pharmacists to be employed within GP practices over
the next 3 years as a pilot which will be evaluated. The
vision is that these pharmacists will be Independent
Prescribers with advanced clinical skills training.
NES Pharmacy has obtained funding to develop an
education and training pathway for pharmacists
and pharmacy technicians for these new roles in GP
practices in Scotland. More detail will be provided in
due course.
NES Pharmacy is providing training to support the
recommendations from the recently launched Scottish
Government National Review of Primary Care Out of
Hours Services.
• The national topic for spring 2016 will focus on
providing clinical updates on three topics to
practitioners, full details are available on page 8.
• The Responding to Minor Ailments distance
learning pack has been extensively updated to
include new therapeutic areas. A copy of a new
Common Clinical Conditions and Minor Ailments
pack will be sent to every community pharmacy in
January 2016.
• In addition, to assist with the gradual
implementation of the trimethoprim PGD in
Scotland, NES Pharmacy recently commissioned
Robert Gordon University to develop a Urinary Tract
Infection (UTI) e-learning module for community
pharmacy practitioners. This will be available from
January 2016.
All educational resources are available either via the
NES Pharmacy website or Portal: www.portal.scot.nhs.uk
Adverse Drug Reactions – Yellow Card
reporting
In a recent circular (PCA (P) (2015) 26) the
Scottish Government has highlighted that
greater participation from community
pharmacy in the reporting of adverse drug
events will support an improvement in the
safety climate. The circular announces that all
employed pharmacists, pharmacy technicians
and locums should complete training in
relation to Yellow Card reporting.
To support this, NES and the Yellow Card
Centre Scotland have reviewed and
updated six e-learning modules in this area.
Practitioners can access these modules via
the NES website or Portal, and they can
demonstrate achievement by completing the
corresponding MCQs on Portal.
All educational resources are available either via the
NES Pharmacy website or Portal: www.portal.scot.nhs.uk

Mini clinical updates
Pharmacy technicians - Understanding dementia
Workload pressures mean that busy practitioners have
less time for reading recently launched guidelines and
for keeping up-to-date with developments in clinical
areas that are relevant to our work.
The Scottish Government’s dementia strategy,
Scotland’s National Dementia Strategy: 2013 - 16,
highlights the fact that Dementia is one of the
foremost public health challenges for Scotland.
Almost all pharmacy staff in any care setting will
regularly provide services for people with dementia,
and they need to understand how they can contribute
to improving dementia care in Scotland.
This evening will update practitioners on recent
clinical updates in Cardiology, Respiratory Disease
and Diabetes and discuss changes in `best practice’. In
addition, it will allow practitioners to plan for changes
in their own practice in relation to the pharmaceutical
care of their patients.
This evening will be in the format of three workshops
led by local experts. Each attendee will have the
chance to participate in each workshop.
The Understanding dementia events, running in
several areas across Scotland, will provide pharmacy
technicians with a better understanding of the
diagnosis and treatment of dementia as well as
building confidence to support the needs of people
with dementia.
An essential evening for clinical practitioners! Bring
along your questions and ask about changes you have
noticed on a day-to-day basis.

Second Update

1. The Pre - Registration Pharmacist Scheme
The 2016 PRPS recruitment exercise - for the
2017/18 cohort of trainees - is getting underway.
NES will contact Training Providers in January seeking
expressions of interest in participation in the 2017/18
training year. The information gathered on those
wishing to participate will be made available to
candidates in the spring.
In terms of PRPS quality management, approval of
the training practices for 2016/17 is underway with
the aim of reporting to the GPhC in February. The
2015/16 tutor appraisal process has been launched
and all tutors are required to complete the on-line selfassessment by the end of February 2016.
For the 2015/16 training programme NES is pleased
to be piloting placements of pre-registration trainees
with GP Practice Pharmacists. Twenty places have
been made available in the West region with trainees
invited to apply. The placements have specific learning
outcomes and feedback from both tutors and trainees
will be sought by questionnaire when completed.
The development of the PRPS Modular Programme
is progressing with four trainees pursuing the threeblock programme in 2015/16 and six trainees matched
to the programme for 2016/17.
Further information can be obtained by
