NETBALL QUEENSL AND
PRESIDENT’S REPORT
What a year for our wonderful sport in
Queensland and my great thanks go out
to our fantastic members, NQ staff, fellow
Board members, corporate partners and our
fabulous volunteers across our state. Without
the dedication and hard work of everyone
involved in our sport we could not achieve the
results we have over the last year.
Our journey through the year started with the
engagement of our current CEO, Catherine
Clark, who has brought a tremendous energy
to the organisation through her professionalism
and past experience within major sporting
organisations. Our operational teams have
worked extremely hard to deliver on the NQ
strategies and plans for 2015 and I thank them
for their tremendous efforts.
Our State Age teams had another successful
year, led by our National Champion 17U’s
who were successful in Sydney, the 21U’s who
inished third in Caloundra, the ANL team who
inished fourth and our 19U’s who inished
sixth in Sydney. Congratulations to all our girls
who made national squads and in particular
Mahalia Cassidy who made the Australian
21U team.
What an unbelievable ANZ Championship
season – our fantastic Firebirds had a season
of great success and who cannot remember
the last 15 seconds of the grand inal. I have
no doubt this game has been replayed many
times across our netball community and we
can only congratulate this iconic group of
people led by Roselee and her team, with
Laura and all the players presenting the most
professional and supporter-focused outit in the
country. Our supporter base is the best and I’d
suggest the most vocal of all ANZ Teams and
that was conirmed at the Boondall grand inal.
The Firebirds and general Netball brands
have grown across our state thanks to this
wonderful team.
Congratulations to our Laura Geitz – led
Australian Diamonds who won the recent
World Cup in Sydney. Laura was joined by
our Kim Ravaillion and Rebecca Bulley in the
Diamonds for the Championship and they
are now joined by Clare McMeniman, Gabi
Simpson and Gretel Tippett in the Diamonds
for the annual Constellation Cup series against
New Zealand. Many congratulations to all
these girls in reaching the highest honour in
our sport. In May, the Australia Diamonds
training squad invitees included Clare
McMeniman, Gretel Tippet and Gabi Simpson.
We commenced the NQ Capability
Improvement Project 2025 highlighted by our
mid-year Leaders Conference on the Sunshine
Coast. The member engagement was fabulous,
as was the social interaction that allowed
our netball community to meet and discuss
common issues from across the state. Many
thanks to our staff for their organisation and
to our guest speakers and working groups for
the presentations.
Our Suzuki State Series were highly successful
for 2015. State Age at Hinterland Netball
Association, State Challenge at Caboolture
Netball Association and Country Carnival at
Townsville were run with great volunteers and
staff. Many thanks to our host associations for
their support in ensuring a great experience for
all attending.
To all our corporate partners including Mission
Foods, Suzuki Queensland, Coca Cola Amatil,
Telstra and Gilbert and others, we say thank
you for your much appreciated support over
2015 and look forward to your continued
involvement in our sport.
The announcement of our $30m “Home of
Netball” facility at Queensland Sporting
and Athletics Centre, Nathan, by the current
State Government was greeted with great
joy and much relief. Years of hard work have
inally been rewarded and I can’t thank the
Queensland Government enough for their
wonderful support in providing our sport with
its own facility. I say to all who contributed to
this success: be proud and enjoy the future of
our sport in Queensland.
To my fellow Board Members, Catherine
Clark and her staff, I thank you for your
support through 2015 and I look forward
with excitement to further success in 2016
and beyond.
Yours in Netball.

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER’S REPORT
CARPE DIEM - SEIZE THE DAY
A line made famous by the movie Dead
Poet’s Society, seems to best describe my irst
six months at Netball Queensland. Whether
forged from blood sweat and tears, facilitated
through collaboration, or driven by external
forces – opportunities are here, and we must
seize them.
From the irst week of my role as CEO, I was
talking with both sides of politics about a
State Home of Netball. The opportunity to
state Netball’s claims was precipitated by the
forthcoming election on 31 January 2015.
Advocacy for our sport, and for the entire
netball community, is a core and critical
function of Netball Queensland. It was not until
13 February that the new State Government,
with a record-breaking eight women in the
Cabinet, was conirmed – and then the task
to seize the opportunity really began. I
extend my sincere gratitude to all members
who have been involved in lobbying efforts
for this facility. This year we executed a
communications strategy and to those Netball
Associations which answered the call,
supported us in writing and in meetings with
parliamentarians, I cannot thank you enough.
On June 28, the Courier Mail announced the
Premier’s commitment of $30 million to build
our Home. This new facility will fundamentally
change our business and unleashes a whole
range of new possibilities and opportunities for
Netball in Queensland.
On the court this year, our State teams and
athletes have also seized their opportunity.
The 17U team had a blistering undefeated
campaign taking out the National
Championships. The 21Us just missed out by
inishing third in their National Championships
which was hosted by Netball Queensland
in Caloundra this year. Our athletes were
recognised at a national level with Alexia
Baker, Jada Gafa, Maddison Hinchliffe,
Tara Hinchliffe, Rylie Holland, Binnian Hunt,
Kimberley Jenner and Annabella Sorby all
selected into the National 17U squad; Ashlee
Unie and Cara Koenen selected into the 19U
National Squad and Beryl Friday, Mahalia
Cassidy and Hulita Haukinima talent-identiied
and selected in the National 21U Squad.
During this time we also had Laura Geitz, Kim
Ravaillion and Bec Bulley announced in the
Diamonds team contesting the Netball World
Cup in Sydney later in the year.
6
My congratulations to all the athletes, coaches
and support crew for your achievements this
year. We are very proud of you all.
Can I also recognise and thank everyone who
has made our State Events possible this year.
To Hinterland, Caboolture and Townsville City
Netball Associations who hosted these events,
can I say thank you and great job. Thank you
to the countless volunteers – coaches, umpires,
administrators, bench oficials, Association
Committees – that made these events possible,
and who make netball possible, week in-week
out in your communities. You are the lifeblood
of sport and you ensure that Queenslanders
across the state have the opportunity to be
involved and to play netball. So a big thank
you for all that you do.
While I am extending thank you’s, I must
recognise some more people who make
what we do possible – our sponsors. We
thank our major partners, the Queensland
Government and Mission Foods, for their
continued support of netball and the Mission
Queensland Firebirds. We really appreciate
the support of Coca-Cola Amatil, Suzuki
Queensland, Telstra Corporation, Gilbert,
Brisbane Airport Corporation, Game Clothing,
Snap Fitness, Elastoplast, Nova 106.9FM,
4BC AM Radio, Win Television, Yellow
Cabs, and Premier Sports & Leisure. Can
I also make special mention of the Carina
Leagues Club who have not only supported
Netball Queensland but have remained loyal
supporters of the Brisbane East Tigers and
netball in general. Sponsors like you are hard
to ind and we greatly appreciate your passion
for netball. Please take the time to review a
full list of our exceptional sponsors later in this
Annual Report.
In these past six months one sporting moment
none of us will forget was the 2015 ANZ
Championship Grand Final. After two years
of crushing disappointment, Firebirds coaches
and athletes did what true champions do. They
made a conscious decision that near enough
is not good enough, and they interrogated
every aspect of their program to ind potential
performance improvement. Not satisied
with second best, they had brutally honest
conversations around their performance, their
skills, their culture, their game. The belief that
they had not left any stone unturned, the belief
in each other to get the job done was a turning
point with 3 minutes to go. The rest is history
and certainly goes down in my books as one of the greatest
sporting moments I’ve ever witnessed. It is a cracking
lesson in seizing your opportunities. They put in all the work
throughout the pre-season, in every round game, to give
themselves a shot at the title – when it counted, they seized
it and were crowned the Champions they are.
Their story is so applicable to any of us in leadership
or coaching roles, in sport or any other industry. The
brutally honest self-review, preparedness to make tough
decisions, and accountability of every member of the
team. It certainly lends itself to our work on the Capability
Improvement Project and the leadership shown by all those
people involved.
On February 28, we had our irst AGM for 2015. It was
a great opportunity to meet a large proportion of our
members and talk about what I had learned in my irst ive
weeks on the job. The forum after the AGM was the catalyst
for our next opportunity – organisational change. Feedback
from members showed some clear priorities which I
grouped into four themes: leadership and governance,
people and culture, commercialisation and sport innovation.
After member endorsement, we set about working on these
areas. I want to thank everyone who has worked on the
Capability Improvement Project (listed below) for your time,
energy, leadership, candour and commitment. I want to
thank members who have engaged in the project, submitted
feedback and contributed to the development of solutions
for our future. It is so critical we harness our collective
ideas, intellect, experience and opinions.
To my wonderful and committed staff at Netball
Queensland, thank you. You have welcomed me into
Netball, you consistently give 110% to our sport and often
with little praise. Throughout the year we have managed
a number of curve balls – like hosting three consecutive
ANZ Championship conference inals including a grand
inal – and you have risen to the occasion. Thanks also
to the Netball Queensland Board for appointing me and
entrusting me with leading this organisation. I know I have
yet to complete my irst year in the job but it already feels
like I’ve been here for a lot longer!
As I write this report, the work of so many people involved
in the Capability project, plus a lot of consultation and
a lot of feedback, is providing members of Netball
Queensland with the opportunity to seize the day. In April,
the Leadership and Governance working group set about
developing a new governance framework that will serve
netball into the future. I commend the group, Chaired by
Leisa Donlan, on the quality of their work and the quality
of consultation. Tremendous. In October we vote on a
new Constitution which both symbolically and practically
launch Netball into the future. And so it seems that 2015
is all about seizing our opportunities for a bigger and
brighter future.

MISSION
QUEENSLAND FIREBIRDS
“In a Grand
Final that was
widely described
as the best ever,
the Firebirds
triumphed and
made it three
trophies
from three...”
The 2015 ANZ Championship season saw
the introduction of two new league initiatives,
with a Conference Finals series system and
Challenge Trophy designed to provide more
for teams to play for. The season commenced
on the last weekend in February and after
the Grand Final was completed in late June,
the Mission Queensland Firebirds hold
all three trophies: Australian Conference
Champions, Challenge Trophy holders and
ANZ Champions.
A round two victory over the Pulse in
Wellington, in what was Coach Roselee
Jencke’s 75th game in charge in the ANZ
Championship, was soured with Wing Attack
Verity Simmons suffering a fractured wrist in
the dying minutes of the game. This would
open the opportunity for Laura Scherian to
return to the Firebirds for the round 3 match
against the NSW Swifts in Sydney, a match
which would see the teams locked at 47–all at
full time.
The Firebirds went into the 2015 season with
ive changes to the roster that had lost to the
Melbourne Vixens in the 2014 decider. Young
Queenslander Beryl Friday was the only recruit
without ANZ Championship experience;
Caitlyn Nevins (Vixens), Rebecca Bulley
(Thunderbirds), Gretel Tippett (Swifts) and
Laura Clemesha (returning Firebirds) all played
at that level previously.
With Simmons on the sidelines for at least
six weeks, young Queensland mid-courter,
Mahalia Cassidy was offered a temporary
replacement player contract. Mahalia illed
that role until Simmons’ return in round 11,
and made her on court debut in the round
8 victory against the Waikato Bay of Plenty
Magic. During that time the Firebirds would
notch up consecutive victories against the
Swifts, Thunderbirds, Vixens, Magic, Mystics
and Fever. The latter win saw the Challenge
Trophy make its way to Brisbane after residing
in Perth since the start of the season. The
match against the Fever would also prove
signiicant for Goal Shooter Romelda Aiken
as she posted goal number 4,000 in her ANZ
Championship career.
Round one of the ANZ Championship season
would see the 100th ANZ Championship
game for both Romelda Aiken and Rebecca
Bulley, a feat that was also achieved
by captain, Laura Geitz in round ive.
Unfortunately it would prove a disappointing
start to what would be a memorable season,
with the West Coast Fever coming to Brisbane
and leaving with a 57–50 victory at the
Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre.
That was the last time the Firebirds would taste
defeat in 2015.
12
The Challenge Trophy would go on the line
twice with home games against the Melbourne
Vixens in round 11 and the Southern Steel
in round 14. With victories in both matches,
the trophy was successfully retained and
ensured that it would start the 2016 season
in Queensland.
Away victories in rounds 12 and 13 against
the Adelaide Thunderbirds and Mainland
Tactix would ensure that the Firebirds inished
the season on top of the ladder, four points
clear of their nearest rivals and with a 12
game undefeated run.
Finishing on top of the Australian Conference
gave the team a match off and a guaranteed
opportunity to play for the Australian
Conference title. Following victory against the
West Coast Fever, the NSW Swifts made the
trip north to contest the Australian Conference
Final. After 60 minutes of netball, the Firebirds
had their second piece of silverware for the
season, winning the match 55–44 and setting
up a Grand Final Qualiier at home against
the Northern Mystics.
The unbeaten run was extended with a
comprehensive 60–44 victory at the Brisbane
Convention and Exhibition Centre, putting
the Firebirds into their third Grand Final in
as many seasons. Their opponents, the NSW
Swifts would again make the journey north and
face a capacity crowd of 6,500 spectators at
the Brisbane Entertainment Centre.
In a Grand Final that was widely described
as the best ever, the Firebirds triumphed and
made it three trophies from three with a last
minute 57–56 victory. Having not led for any
period of the match, the Firebirds hit the front
with 13 seconds remaining through a Gretel
Tippett goal before a defensive intercept
sealed a remarkable win and the exclamation
point on a hugely successful season.
At a championship level, Romelda Aiken’s
total of 648 goals saw her named the
inaugural Australian Conference MVP with Kim
Ravaillion named in the ANZ Championship
All Star Team of the Year. Closer to home, the
Firebirds Awards Dinner saw Romelda Aiken
and Kim Ravaillion named as joint MVP’s,
Clare McMeniman as Player’s Player, Gabi
Simpson take home the members player of the
year and Laura Clemesha named the Firebirds
Spirit Award winner.
Team success also brought individual
recognition at a national level with six
Firebirds (Geitz, McMeniman, Bulley,
Ravaillion, Simpson and Tippett) named in the
extended Australian Diamonds World Cup
squad and three (Geitz, Bulley and Ravaillion)
being named in the team that would represent
Australia at the Netball World Cup.

QUEENSLAND FUSION
After the success of the 2014 Queensland

The season started for the Fusion at home
against the Southern Force, Tassie Spirit and
Netball NSW Waratahs at Ormiston College
on the 26th, 27th and 28th of June. The young
Fusion side had a tough introduction to the
season with a irst up loss to the Force however
this was followed by victories against both the
Tassie Spirit and a commanding 10 point win
over the NNSW Waratahs 54–44.
The following weekend saw the team ly to
Perth for round two and matches against the
Territory Storm and the home town Western
Sting, coming away with a win and a loss
after defeating the Storm 65 – 34 and
suffering a 66 – 45 defeat at the hands of the
Western Sting.
The inal away trip of the regular season saw
the Fusion travel to Adelaide to take on the
Victorian Fury and the Canberra Darters. A
nine goal loss to the Fury meant the equation
was simple. Win against Canberra and make
the Semi Finals for the second year in a row.
The team were able to overpower a spirited
Canberra side 58–42 to secure their trip to
Melbourne for the inals.
The team travelled to the inals at Melbourne’s
Waverly Netball Centre for the second year in
a row however a number of injuries throughout
the campaign made life dificult against
the best teams in the competition with the
Fusion inishing fourth, following losses to the
Victorian Fury and Western Sting.

QUEENSLAND 21U
NATIONAL NETBALL
CHAMPIONSHIPS
In 2015, Netball Queensland hosted a
National Netball Championships for the irst
time since 2010, welcoming 21U teams from
across the country to the Sunshine Coast
and the Caloundra Indoor Stadium from
March 10–5.
The 2015 championships saw each state
and territory represented, with Tasmania and
the Northern Territory competing for the irst
time in three years. The event, managed by
Netball Queensland with support from the
Sunshine Coast Council, Netball Australia and
the Caloundra Netball Association witnessed
South Australia once again proving the team
to beat, taking the title without losing a match
for the third straight year after beating Victoria
44–42 in the Grand Final.
Home team Queensland took home bronze
following a comprehensive 50–40 defeat of
New South Wales.
QUEENSLAND 21U
STATE TEAM
Under head coach Tracey Jeanes-Fraser,
Queensland’s 21U team took home the
bronze medal at their home championships
at the Caloundra Indoor Stadium. The match
was a replay of the 2014 Bronze Medal
match with Queensland again taking on New
South Wales. The result was a reversal of
the previous year’s result, with Queensland
winning 50–40 in front of a parochial
home crowd.
Three members of the Queensland Squad,
Beryl Friday, Mahalia Cassidy and Hulita
Haukinima were nationally talent-identiied
and selected in the National 21U Squad.
Mahalia Cassidy would later go on to be
named in the Australian 21U team.

QUEENSLAND 19U STATE TEAM
The 2015 National 19U Netball
Championships were played at Sydney’s
Netball Central at Olympic Park in New South
Wales in April.
Queensland went into the campaign as
defending champions, with a vastly different
squad to the one which took out the title
in 2014. A number of new faces and
Queensland debutants complemented returning
head coach Christine Voge. The team endured
a mixed campaign with a number of injuries
to key players testing the depth of the squad.
Finishing ifth after the preliminary rounds,
the toll of a long week would eventually get
the better of the young team as they inished
sixth following a loss to Tasmania in the
playoff game.
Despite the mixed campaign for the team, two
Queensland athletes, Ashlee Unie and Cara
Koenen were nationally identiied and selected
into the 19U National Squad.

QUEENSLAND 17U STATE TEAM
The 2015 National 17U Netball
Championships were played concurrently
with the 19U event at Sydney’s Netball
Central in April.
The Queensland 17U side, under returning
Head Coach Amanda Vanderwal, completed
a perfect campaign on their way to the
National Championship title. The team went
through the tournament undefeated and after
claiming a 27 – 24 victory over home side
New South Wales in the Grand Final, they
became only the second ever Queensland
team to win a 17U title and the irst
since 1983.
The team had the best defence at the
championships, conceding a tournament low
134 goals across 7 matches. This defensive
prowess was further highlighted following
Kimberley Jenner’s naming as the tournament’s
most valuable player. Not to be outdone and
to further highlight the team’s dominance,
Queensland’s shooters proved their worth
by scoring a tournament high 254 goals in
7 matches.
Not surprisingly, Queensland were well
represented in the Australian 17U national
squad with eight athletes, Alexia Baker, Jada
Gafa, Maddison Hinchliffe, Tara Hinchliffe,
Rylie Holland, Binnian Hunt, Kimberley Jenner
and Annabella Sorby all gaining selection.

SPORT DEVELOPMENT AND PARTICIPATION
MEMBER SERVICES UNIT
MEMBERSHIP SUPPORT
For the six months to June 2015 there were
46,127 registered members in the MyNetball
database, which has already eclipsed the total
number of registrations for 2014.
The breakdown of the Netball Queensland
registered members shows 22,181 Junior
Members; 9,475 Senior Members; 11,697
ANZ NetSetGo! Participants; and 2,774 NonPlaying Members.
At 30th June 2015, Netball Queensland
comprises 79 Member Associations, with the
largest Association having 3,657 members.
At the irst Annual General Meeting for
2015 held in February, Dianne Cocker was
awarded the honour of Netball Queensland
Life Membership.
The AGM in February 2015 also recognised
the contribution made to netball by Margaret
Page and Chris Schell who were awarded
Service Awards and Narelle Schoield-Kern
who was a recipient of the Merit Award.
As we enter the second half of 2015, Netball
Queensland has re-evaluated the way in
which it will engage and work with the netball
community. This change in focus has seen the
introduction of Regional Netball Oficers who
will be working directly with the Associations,
Clubs and Regions in order to assist with the
delivery of netball products and services,
and build the capabilities and capacity of the
netball community.
This is a truly exciting resource for all involved
in netball across Queensland and will continue
to develop and build on an increased level
of engagement between Netball Queensland
and the entire netball community. This resource
is envisaged to be in place before the end
of the 2015 season and will provide a great
opportunity to build towards the 2016 season.
SPORT DEVELOPMENT
AND PARTICIPATION
Sport Development and Participation has
continued to deliver programs, education,
training and support to many segments of
Netball Queensland including athletes,
umpires, coaches and oficials.
The department also looks after programs
and opportunities for the sport across
20
the state which are aimed at increasing
participation rates.
Through the irst half of 2015, ANZ
NetSetGO!, the national netball introductory
program for children aged between ive
and ten years, has seen strong growth
and an increase in participation and
membership numbers.
In line with Netball Queensland’s strategic
objective to “Involve People in Netball”,
the Sport Development and Participation
team is focussed on providing opportunities
for as many Queenslanders as possible to
participate in Netball in an inclusive and
supportive environment.
SPORT DEVELOPMENT – ATHLETES
In 2015 Netball Queensland Regional
Academy Programs implemented the Netball
Australia Dare to Develop a Diamond
content along with Netball Queensland core
components which are being delivered into the
12 Regions.
The Netball Australia Dare to Develop a
Diamond content and the Netball Australia
Develop a Diamond Program Curriculum
provides development, education and support
structures for athletes to easily integrate into the
next level of the elite pathway. The program
focusses on athletic development, acquisition of
elite skills and the broader concepts of injury
prevention, recovery, lifestyle management
and education.
A record number of over 500 athletes from
across Queensland trialled for Regional
Academy selection in November 2014. From
these trials, 207 players were selected into
the program. The introduction of the Netball
Queensland Academy provided an opportunity
for 30 Regional Academy athletes to be part
of this next stage of development within the
Netball Queensland Athlete Pathway. The
players selected in the Netball Queensland
Academy were named in February following
January’s Regional Academy Training Camp.
A feature of the program early in the year was
a series of combined camps that were held
throughout the state. Five cluster camps were
held following the January training camp; these
camps enabled athletes to access specialised
strength and conditioning resources and
support from Acceleration, in addition to other
specialist coaching in a positive environment.
The Netball Queensland Academy squad held
their irst camp at the Sports Super Centre on
the Gold Coast in May.
Talent identiication at the 2015 State Age
Carnival held at Hinterland District Netball
Association was highly successful and
produced a further 48 athletes identiied within
the 13–16 years age group. In response to the
talent identiication that occurred, over 50%
chose to join the 2015 Regional Academy
Program for the remainder of the season.
SPORT DEVELOPMENT – UMPIRES
The irst six months of 2015 saw further
implementation of the Netball Queensland
Umpire Development Plan. The plan provides
a pathway for umpires from Association
Level through the stages of developing,
emerging talent and high performance and is
in alignment with the Netball Australia High
Performance Pathway.
An initial pilot group was selected to take
part in the program, and further inductions
would be made following talent identiication
processes at State Events.
Cara Wennerbom and Ashleigh Stevenson
umpired at the Netball Australia 17U and 19U
National Netball Championships in 2015.
Umpire Masterclasses were held, incorporating
presenters including Umpire Coaches,
High Performing Interstate Umpires and
Acceleration ESP Group. Acceleration ESP
also provided itness training sessions, and
tracking for members of the High Performance
Umpire Group.
Netball Queensland has also investigated
video analysis software and are investing
in video equipment for speciic use in the
umpiring programs. The equipment will be a
valuable tool in training and educating umpires
in key performance criteria.
Netball Queensland competitions such as the
Mission Queensland State Netball League and
South-East Queensland Challenge continue to
provide a high level of competition for umpires
to perform. The Umpire Coaches continue
to work with our local umpires and provide
coaching and feedback to the umpires that are
coming up through the ranks.
SPORT DEVELOPMENT – COACHES
The start of the 2015 season has seen the
introduction of the Netball Queensland
Accreditation Calendar, which offers a
comprehensive range of coach education
opportunities. It has also seen the
scheduling of two assessment weekends
speciically designated for Intermediate and
Advanced assessment and is accessible via the
Netball Queensland coaching web page.
Registrations for all coaching courses and
workshops have been made available online.
The MyNetball database provides access to
individual coaches and association coaching
convenors to the accreditation, education and
training information and history.
The implementation of Shutterfly has provided
Netball Queensland coaching presenters a
communication tool and centralised location for
access to resources and research information.
Changes to the Foundation and Development
coaching courses for 2015 included more
hands on coaching experience to complement
the theoretical component of the course.
Netball Queensland undertook the process
of upskilling 18 current presenters to ensure
consistency in the delivery of coach education
and training programs.
Netball Australia have launched three
initiatives in 2015 that include: coaching
blue print, E-Learning and netball coach
approach with all accessible via the Netball
Queensland website.
There has been ongoing work between
Netball Queensland and Association coaching
convenors to introduce new initiatives and
consolidate the communication channels
through face to face, iMeet and updates
via email.
While there have been several new initiatives
implemented and progress made during the
irst six months of 2015, a number of areas
remain a challenge in the coaching area.
These will continue to be worked on throughout
the remainder of 2015.
PARTICIPATION – ANZ NetSetGO!
The six months to June 2015 saw 11,697
children register to participate in ANZ
NetSetGO! programs across Queensland.
This has been a fantastic response to the
program and will assist in developing the next
generation of netballers in Queensland.
ANZ NetSetGo! will play a signiicant role in
the upcoming Australian Sports Commission
Sporting Schools program which will replace
the Active After Schools program during the
second half of 2015.
Downey Park Netball Association can lay claim
to being the largest ANZ NetSetGo! centre in
the state and many Associations have shown
strong growth rates from the 2014 season.
21
PARTICIPATION – COMMUNITY
ENGAGEMENT AND LEGACY
The irst half of 2015 saw the Australia Post
One Netball program continue to increase
engagement with Indigenous and culturally
and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities
and people with a disability. Four Australia
One Netball Ambassadors Clare McMeniman,
Jemmason Power, Rebecca Bulley and Beryl
Friday were appointed to promote the program
and inspire individuals across Queensland.
The Australia Post One Netball Come and Try
Program was held at Australian International
Islamic College Carrara and provided
students with the opportunity to experience
netball. One Netball Ambassador Jemmason
Power travelled to Mount Isa and Cloncurry
to conduct a Community Participation Clinic,
after delivering an inspirational speech to
150 women at the Cloncurry Women’s Day
Luncheon for their International Women’s Day
celebrations. The Australia Post One Netball
Ambassadors also inspired 180 athletes at
the Regional Academy Camp in January,
speaking about their personal experiences and
delivering a goal setting activity.
Netball Queensland celebrated Refugee
Awareness Week at the Logan RAW Festival
in collaboration with ACCESS Community
Services. Come and Try Clinics were held at
Logan City netball in partnership with ACCESS
Community Services in lead up to the start of
the netball season.
22
ANZ NetSetGo! was delivered to 216 CALD
participants, 618 Indigenous participants
and 496 participants with a disability across
Queensland to the end of June.
The Netball World Cup Trophy Tour visited
Queensland in March stopping in at the SEQ
challenge, Metropolitan Districts Netball
Association Rep Carnival, Downey Park Rep
Carnival, St Hilda’s School and the Mission
Queensland Firebirds home game at the
Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre.
PARTICIPATION –
FIREBIRDS COMMUNITY
DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM
The Mission Queensland Firebirds players
hosted 13 free netball clinics across
Queensland in early 2015, with a total of 909
participants. The inal Firebirds Community
Development Clinic marked the launch of the
Mission Queensland Firebird’s Clash Dress and
the purple court at Western Districts Netball
Association in Graceville.
PARTICIPATION – SCHOOLS
The Sporting Schools program was launched
by the Australian Sports Commission in January
with the program due to commence in July
2015. Sporting Schools is Australia’s largest
participation program for all children to foster
a lifelong interest in sport. It brings schools
and sports together to provide a supportive
environment that encourages participation in
sport by over 850,000 Australian children.
COMMERCIAL OPERATIONS
Netball Queensland’s commercial operations oversee sponsorship, marketing and
communications, media and all event activities for Netball Queensland and the
Queensland Firebirds.
Early 2015 heralded outstanding brand awareness and success for our partners through
the on-court performances of the Mission Queensland Firebirds. Our continuing major
partners, plus new corporate and strategic alliances along with media partnerships
allowed an enhanced brand proile. The Commercial team focussed on improved
partnerships with our sponsors and concerted multi-media promotion.
Netball Queensland undertook formal research to assess the commercial opportunities
that are available in the future; this investment is designed to identify the potential for
increased income for NQ as well as a greater return on investment for stakeholders and
our corporate partners. There are as-yet-untapped commercial opportunities that Netball
Queensland can explore to enhance our products, services, competitions, carnivals, events
and community engagement. The business of Netball is changing, and changing quickly.
New communication platforms are on the horizon (social media, outside of traditional
marketing) whereby we can engage with fans, participants and sponsors more effectively.
We intend to use all methods of communication which can grow the interest in and loyalty
to the game of netball and our elite teams.
23
SPONSORSHIP
Netball Queensland has ongoing relationships with major sponsors and service providers
spanning six and more years and we welcomed several new partners in 2015.
Our longer term partners are:
