MIDI Networking a DTHD-1 VDrums lab by Simon Ayton VDrums & Percussion Specialist Roland Australia MIDI Networking a V-Drums lab It’s possible to use the Roland UM-3G midi interface to allow multiple V-Drums kits to be easily connected to DTHD-1 drum tutor software for networked classroom use. Any current Roland V-Drums kit can be used eg:HD1, TD4, TD9, TD12, TD20 (see specific product manuals for setup details) 1x UM-3G allows 3 V-Drums kits to communicate via MIDI with DTHD-1 3x UM-3G interfaces can be daisy chained for up to 9 V-Drums kits in total Focus V-Drums kit is easily selected inside DTHD-1 from the setup menu this allows the teacher to see exactly what any student is playing by simply selecting in the drum tutor software which interface and port the V-Drums kits are connected to. Setup for up to 3 kits 1. Connect the first UM-3G to a powered USB port and when prompted insert the driver install disk. The first unit’s settings should be switched to ‘MASTER’ and ‘UNIT 1’ 2. Use a standard MIDI lead to connect the MIDI out of the first kit to the physical MIDI IN (#1) on the front of the UM-3G 3. Start DTHD-1 software and open ‘Set up Audio/MIDI Devices’ from the ‘setup’ menu and select ‘1(UM-3G(1))’ as below as the MIDI Input. This kit will now be the focus in DTHD-1 Setting up additional kits 4. When using more than 3 kits, simply connect additional UM-3G interfaces to the ‘TO UM-3G/UM-3EX’ port of the last in the chain and switch it to ‘SLAVE’ and ‘UNIT2 or UNIT3’ 5. When prompted, follow the instructions to install the additional drivers. Once done, exit DTHD-1 if it is open and re-launch it to see the additional UM-3Gs. From the ‘Setup Audio/MIDI device’ tab you will now see the additional interface listed as ‘ UM-3G(2))’ for example as follows: NOTE: If an error message is reported that the USB port does not have enough power for multiple USB interfaces, simply unplug the UM-3G and connect it to another USB port of the computer as not all USB ports are powered . There should be at least one USB port with power. (on the test DELL ‘Latitude’ laptop, the rear port is powered but not the side ports.) 6. Use another standard MIDI lead to connect the MIDI out of the fourth kit to the physical ‘MIDI IN 1’ on the front of the additional UM-3G. To make this new kit the focus, simply choose ‘1 (UM-3G(2)) in the ‘Setup’ menu in DTHD-1
