Spanish researchers discovered the spice was the best antioxidant because of the high levels of phenolic compounds it contained. Antioxidants are crucial in keeping food fresh and the findings could have wideranging implications for the food industry. They are also believed to have health benefits. The study has been hailed as a win for the push towards more natural foods as cloves would be able to replace synthetic antioxidants which are currently used by manufacturers to make food last longer. Professor Juana Fernández-López, from Spain’s Miguel Hernández University, said cloves were a versatile spice. “Out of the five antioxidant properties tested, cloves had the highest capacity to give off hydrogen, reduced lipid peroxidation well, and was the best iron reducer”, she said. The research study, published in the C latest issue of the Flavour and Fragrance Journal, ranked the spice as the best natural antioxidant. Prof Fernandez-Lopez said: “The results show that use of the natural oxidants occurring in spices used in the Mediterranean diet, or their extracts, is a viable option for the food industry, as long as the characteristics of the food product are not affected. These substances exhibit high antioxidant capacity, and could have beneficial effects for health." The researchers also evaluated the antioxidant effect of the essential oils from other spices used in the Mediterranean diet oregano, thyme, rosemary, and sage. They were trying to find out if these spices could be used into food products, especially meat, as natural antioxidants. Prof Fernandez-Lopez said antioxidants kept food fresh because it delayed lipid oxidation. “Lipid oxidation is one of the main reasons for foods deteriorating, and causes a significant reduction in their nutritional value, as well as loss of taste”, she said. “These alterations lead to a reduction in the useful lifespan of the food product. To avoid such deterioration, the food industry uses synthetic antioxidants in its products. However, as these are chemical compounds, questions have been raised about their potential toxicity and side-effects.” Prof Fernandez-Lopez said there was a growing interest in using plantbased products with potential antioxidant activity, in order to replace the synthetic antioxidants with “natural” substances. —Telegraph, U LED Light And Green Tea Cream Smooth Facial Wrinkles cientists in Germany are reporting a major improvement in their potential new treatment for facial wrinkles that could emerge as an alternative to Botox and cosmetic surgery. The non-invasive technique combines high-intensity light from light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and a lotion made of green tea extract. It works ten times faster than a similar anti-wrinkle treatment that uses LEDs alone, the researchers say. S www.earthstarmag.com Andrei P. Sommer and Dan Zhu point out that researchers have used light-therapy, or phototherapy, for more than forty years to help heal wounds. Recently the scientists showed that use of high-intensity LEDs, similar to those used in automotive tail lights and computers, could help reduce skin wrinkles when applied daily for several months. But exposure to intense LED light is also involved in generating high levels of reactive oxygen species as byproducts that can potentially damage cells. To combat that effect, the researchers com- bined the LED with a potent antioxidant in green tea extract called epigallocatechin gallate. They applied a daily combination of LED light and green tea extract to the facial wrinkles of a human volunteer for one month. The combination treatment resulted in smoother skin, including “less pronounced wrinkle levels, shorter wrinkle valleys, and juvenile complexion,” the scientists say. The treatment showed promising results in only one-tenth of the time it took for LED therapy alone to reduce wrinkles. The study could form the basis of “an effective facial rejuvenation program,” and lead to a new understanding of the effect reactive oxygen species on cellular aging, they note. — Science Daily APRIL / MAY 2010 EARTH STAR 5 Looking for Customers? A tail rotor counteracts the force, but a more efficient solution is to have the rotors power themselves, which is exactly how the Dragonfly DF1 works. It has tiny, hydrogen-peroxide jets Y on the blade tips, spinning them up without pushing the body of the helo in the other way—though a small tail rotor is still needed to turn the craft. It’s much like the tech that propelled James Bond toward his waiting DB5 in Thunderball, but unlike that jetpack this copter can fly for up to fifty minutes. It’s the product of Swisscopter Americas and, while they’ve been playing with the DF1 for many moons now, the company is also working on the DF2 (shown right), a rather more civilized version that seats two. The DF1 is certified for flight in the US, looks to be available for sale and, while no price is listed, they are said to be much more friendly to the environment than traditional helicopters. That’ll surely add to the premium. —engadget.com Sir Richard Branson’s Underwater Plane illionaire Sir Richard Branson may already own an airline, a record label, a mobile phone company, several luxury restaurants and a Caribbean island. But today the entrepreneur unveiled his latest toy— an underwater plane. The £415,000 prototype submersible is called the Necker Nymph and can dive to depths of up to 130ft. Sir Richard hopes to one day explore depths of 35,000ft—which is far more than the height of Mount Everest. Sir Richard plans to lend the Nymph out to visitors of his luxury hideaway, Necker Island. Gliding like an aeroplane through the water it can carry a pilot and two visitors on a twohour trip. After undergoing scuba training, guests can uncover ancient shipwrecks, fly side-by-side with dolphins or follow whales. Such a unique experience comes at a price of course. The Nymph is available to hire for $25,000 a week (£15,000), but only after you have forked out a minimum of $88,000 (£55,000) for seven nights on the luxury catamaran, the Necker Belle. B www.earthstarmag.com The luxury sub has fighter jet technology and is piloted with a joystick. While most subs use ballast to propel subs under the water, the Nymph uses downward 'lift' on the wings to fly down. It was designed and built by Graham Hawkes, chief of Hawkes Ocean Technologies and is the first of its kind. Marketing manager Karen Hawkes, said: “The Nymph is an entirely new class of vehicle for us— think of a sleek convertible under water. It is different from our other submersibles because it was specifically designed to dive to scuba depths in tropical waters. It has the flexibility to glide peacefully over glorious reefs or bank adventurously in 360 degree turns.” S h e described the sub, which is part of its Deep Flight range, as “hydrobatic” with individual “wind shields” that removes the pressure of slipstream. This means the sub can have an open cockpit that gives guests panoramic views. Ms Hawkes also insisted that the sub had a low environmental impact. “Its positive buoyancy prevents the sub from landing on a reef, and its low light and noise emissions ensure the fragile ocean ecosystems remain undisturbed.” Those readers who have a spare £70,000 may jump at this adventurous week's holiday. A new study shows that people who give up work completely are less healthy than those who carry on in a part time job. It found they experience fewer serious diseases and are able to function better day-to-day than those who stop working altogether. Those staying on in part-time jobs related to their previous career are also likely to fare better mentally than those who drop everything. The authors claim it could be worthwhile to engage in “bridge employment,” which can be a part-time job, self-employment or a temporary job. Study co-author Dr Mo Wang, an American psychologist at Maryland University, said: “Given the economic recession, we will probably see more people considering post-retirement employment. These findings highlight bridge employment's potential benefits.” The researchers looked at data from the US National Institute on Ageing which quizzed twelve thousand people between the ages of fifty-one and sixtyone on their health, finances, employment history and retirement over a six year period. They looked at health problems such as high blood pressure, diabetes, cancer, lung disease, heart disease, F strokes and psychiatric problems. The results showed those retirees who continued to work in a bridge job experienced fewer major diseases and fewer functional limitations than those who fully retired. The participants were also questioned on their basic mental health questionnaire. The findings showed that people whose post-retirement jobs were related to their previous careers reported better mental health than those who fully retired. However, these mental health improvements were not found among people who worked in jobs outside their career field after retirement. The authors say this may be because retirees who take jobs not related to their career field may need to adapt to a different work environment or job conditions and, therefore, become more stressed. The study confirms previously held views that people who give up work after a life-time toiling can die soon after retiring. Some store chains in the UK like B&Q, Tesco and Sainsbury’s have a policy of recruiting older workers because of their previous experience. The researchers also found pensioners with money problems were also more likely to work in a different field after they officially retire. Co-author Dr Kenneth Shultz said: “Choosing a suitable type of bridge employment will help retirees transition better into full retirement in good physical and mental health.” He said employers who are concerned about a labour shortage due to numerous baby boomers retiring might consider bridge employment options for their retirees. The findings are reported in the Journal of Occupational Health Psychology, published by the American Psychological Association. —Telegraph.co.uk The “new leaf” mentality egular exercise can reduce your risk of hypertension, heart disease, and diabetes. It can increas strength and endurance, build bone, and help with weight control. It can be a pleasurable enhancement to life. And research suggests that its benefits are not all physical. Exercise often comes with a mind-set. People who exercise are more likely to have other good health habits, and those who start to exercise regularly are likelier to acquire other good habits, such as quitting (or never starting) smoking, eating healthy foods, R 8 EARTH STAR APRIL / MAY 2010 and sticking to a weight-loss diet. How is physical activity linked with healthy habits? Exercisers may, of course, have better all-around health habits to begin with, but that's not the whole picture. Someone who starts to exercise may lose weight and thus be motivated to have a healthier diet. Smokers trying to quit may fear weight gain less if they start exercising. Beginning an exercise program might also be a marker for the “turning-overa-new-leaf” mentality—the desire to take better care of yourself generally and to alter a less-than-optimal life- style. I n any case, if you're sedentary, an exercise program is an excellent gateway to pass through, one that may lead to other significant improvements in your life. —U.C. Berkeley Wellness Letter www.earthstarmag.com Earth Star Up Front Fox News Covers Mass Drugging of Society with Lithium I n the remarkable Fox News report below, Dr. Archelle Georgiou, described as a well-recognized physician leader who “helps consumers make better health care decisions,” argues the case for adding lithium to the water supply. Georgiou is affiliated with the Center for Health Transformation, an organization founded by the notorious neocon Newt Gingrich. Georgiou is also a “medical expert” for Fox News 9 in Minneapolis where she commented on a proposal to drug people during a segment on “Health Care Innovations 2009.” “Lithium in the Water Supply: America has been adding fluoride to its public water supplies for decades to help prevent reduce tooth decay. Now researchers from Japan suggests expanding the list to lithium,” is how how Fox News 9 describes the segment. Georgiou does not explicitly call for adding the mood-stabilizing drug to the water system, as suggested by Japanese researchers, but she does not denounce the proposed practice. Instead, she says the draconian proposal is a “very interesting concept.” Japanese researchers, according to Georgiou, are “investigating whether trace amounts of lithium can just change the mood in a community enough—in a really positive way without having the bad effects of lithium—to really affect the mood and decrease the suicide rate.” Remarkably, Georgiou does not address the moral issue of forcibly drugging a population into submission. On May 1, 2009, the BBC reported on the Japanese research. “Researchers examined levels of lithium in drinking water and suicide rates in the prefecture of Oita, which has a population of more than one million. The suicide rate was significantly lower in those areas with the highest levels of the element, they wrote in the British Journal of Psychiatry.” Scientists are not certain how lithium works in the brain. “Lithium increases the amount of neurotransmitters such as serotonin, which can help stabilize both the manic and depressive sides of the disorder, but the exact method behind this is still under investigation,” notes Discovery News. —BlacklistedNews.com U.S. Probing More Cases of CT Radiation Overexposure U .S. regulators are probing more cases of patients who were exposed to excess radiation from brain scans performed with equipment from General Electric and Toshiba, government officials said in December.. The Food and Drug Administration said some patients received up to eight times the normal amount of radiation. High doses of radiation can cause cataracts and increase the risk of some forms of cancer. The FDA said it was investigating 206 cases of patients being overexposed to radiation during CT perfusion scans of the brain at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles during an eighteen-month period. The FDA said in December it had identified at least fifty more cases at Cedars-Sinai and two other California hospitals. Cases also have been reported in Alabama, FDA officials said. The excess radiation caused skin redness and hair loss in some patients, the agency said. The agency has not determined if there were problems with the machines or with how they were used, Dr. Jeffrey Shuren, acting director of the FDA’s device center, told reporters. —Reuters www.earthstarmag.com APRIL / MAY 2010 EARTH STAR 9 Earth Star Up Front Apple Magic Mouse Wows Without Wires, Wheel h, mice. As far as the humble mouse goes, there’s really not much to get excited about. Sure, you can buy one optimized for gaming, one that fits in even the most minimalist laptop case (um, isn’t that called a trackpad?) or even one that claims to have your ergonomic best interests in mind. But really, let’s be honest: most of us use whatever crummy palm pointer came in the box. The $69 Apple Magic Mouse could change that (except for users of Apple’s newly revamped iMac, which ships with it included). With a sportscar-sleek one-piece touchpad top, the little stunner from Cupertino really turns heads. When’s the last time a mouse did that? A Boot up a compatible Mac—this guy’s for the Leopard-and-newer crowd—and things really start to get interesting. Like Apple’s iPhone, iPod Touch, and, more recently laptop trackpads, the top surface is a multi-touch panel. Swipe two fingers up, down, or side to side, and the page onscreen scrolls. Pinch and spread to zoom in and out on photos. Bluetooth does away with any wires, letting you work up to ten meters away, and Apple claims a pair of AA’s will power the Magic Mouse for four months. What’s not to like? Gizmodo editor Brian Lam notes that while the mouse is nifty, he sometimes moved it unintentionally while using the multitouch fea- tures–try it on your non-Magic mouse right now…. Kind of an awkward motion, right? Apple no-doubt hopes the “still-moused two-finger swipe,” like typing on an iPhone, is an easily learned skill. Despite that annoyance (and time will tell if it’s a minor or major one), Apple’s Magic Mouse looks like one of the slickest desktop additions out there. —Christian Science monitor 20 S IMPLE T IPS TO R EDUCE G LOBAL WARMING Whenever you save energy, you reduce demand for fossil fuels, which means lower emissions of carbon dioxide, the major contributor to global warming. This year, vow to take these simple steps suggested by Environmental Defense (EDF.org) for a healthier planet. 1. Use the energy-saving setting to dry dishes—or let them air dry. 8. Wrap your water heater in an insulating jacket (if it has no internal insulation). 16. Insulate your walls and attic to save about 25 percent of home heating bills. 2. Wash laundry in warm or cold water, not hot. 9. Install low-flow showerheads to use less hot water. 17. If you’re replacing windows, install energy-saving models. 3. Turn down your water heater thermostat to about 120 degrees. 10. Caulk and weather-strip around doors and windows to plug air leaks. 4. As you replace appliances, select the most energy-efficient models. 11. Ask your utility company to do a home energy audit. 18. Plant trees next to your home and paint the house a light color if you live in a warm climate or a dark color in a cold climate. 5. Adjust your room thermostat to be lower in winter, higher in summer. 6. Clean or replace dirty air filters, which can save 5 percent of the energy used. 7. Put energy-efficient compact fluorescent bulbs in your mostused lights. 10 EARTH STAR APRIL / MAY 2010 12. Walk, bike, carpool, or use mass transit whenever possible. 13. The eggplant extract is a phytochemical called solasodine glycoside, or BEC5. Dr. Bill E. Cham discovered it, after hearing of a folk medicine cure from Australian farmers. They told him of eye cancers cured in cattle after application of a poultice made from the fruit of a weed called Devil’s Apple, known in Latin as Solanum linnaeanum. This plant is part of the Solanacea family, which includes other common vegetables such as tomato and eggplant. BEC5 works by bonding to a receptor on the surface of the cancer cell. After the cell digests the eggplant extract, it causes the cell to rupture. The cancer cell is destroyed and its contents are then reabsorbed by the body. BEC5 has been proven effective in treating over eighty thousand cases of skin cancer, preventing surgery. The types of cancer treated by eggplant are both invasive and non-invasive nonmelanoma skin cancers. In every case the cancers went into remission and did not return. Australians have been curing their skin cancers using these phyto- A chemicals for decades. BEC5 acts by killing cancer cells without harming any other healthy cells in the human body. BEC5 can also be used to treat actinic keratose, the precursor to cancer, as well as age or sunspots on the skin. Actinic keratoses are a possible predictor of skin cancer. These red patches caused by sun exposure are made of abnormal cells that can mutate into malignant cells in the basal, or lower layers of the skin. Squamous cell carcinomas are another common form of skin cancer, and one which causes nearly two thousands deaths annually. This wart-type growth has irregular borders and can also be treated with the eggplant extract. Used as a cream for over twentyfive years in clinical trials in both Australia and the United Kingdom, BEC5 had success rate of over seventyeight percent when applied for eight weeks. Used for twelve weeks, the cream had a one hundred percent success rate in removing cancers, none of which returned for the following five years. Over one million new cases of nonmelanoma skin cancers are diagnosed each year in the United States alone. Skin cancer is now the most common illness in men over the age of fifty. It is even more common than lung, prostate or colon cancer. Incidences are so common that one out of three Caucasians are now expected to develop skin cancer at some point in their lives. With this simple, natural remedy, many surgeries might be prevented and health restored. —Natural News Leaves of Three, Three Let Them Be rushiol (uh-ROO-she-all) is a chemical in the sap of plants from the genus Toxicodendron, notably poison ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac. These plants grow only in North America, mainly in the U.S., but not in the desert or at elevations higher than four thousand feet. You need not fear them in the Rockies or the Sierras, or in Alaska or Hawaii. It’s estimated that nine out of ten people are allergic to urushiol, which produces a delayed hypersensitivity response on human skin, meaning a painful itchy blistering rash hours or days after exposure. Sensitivity can come on at any age. Poison ivy rash is a bit like a hangover-the best idea is to avoid getting it. Protective clothing, including gloves, is a good idea, but impractical on a hot summer day or when you stumble into the plants unawares. Urushiol on clothing is easily transferred to your skin. U www.earthstarmag.com This oil is hard to destroy—if you get some on your shoes, it will stay potent for years. Several products claim to help prevent or alleviate poison ivy rash. Do they work? Here’s a sampling: Before exposure: • IvyBlock: This contains bentoquatam, a chemical that coats the skin like clay and acts as a barrier to urushiol. It must be applied fifteen minutes before going outdoors and reapplied every four hours. Approved by the FDA, it provides some protection. • Antiperspirants: Some people claim that antiperspirants ontaining aluminum compounds are an effective barrier when rubbed on the skin. No studies back this up. After exposure: • Zanfel Poison Ivy Wash: This com- bination of soap and alcohol-soluble substances binds to the urushiol on your skin so that it can be washed off. There is some unpublished research, but the support for the product is mostly hearsay. Zanfel costs about $40 an ounce (enough for two or three applications), though you can sometimes find it for less. • Teenu: This is another wash-off product that claims to remove urushiol before the rash begins, and to help control itching. No scientific evidence supports this. A package of fifty halfounce packets costs about $35. • Herbal remedies: Many herbs are reputed to help heal poison ivy rash, including jewelweed (Impatiens capensis), an ingredient in Burt’s Bees Poison Ivy Soap. Witch hazel bark and aloe may be useful on the skin. There’s no harm in trying them. —U.C. Berkeley Wellness Letter APRIL / MAY 2010 EARTH STAR 11 APRIL - maY 2010 ercury enters Taurus on April 2nd for a two-month transit, during which practical, down-to-earth thinking prevails. Thoughts turn more often towards ways and means of generating income, and issues relating to one's personal values. Allow your instincts to guide you in financial matters now. M A moon wobble phase that began on March 30th and ends on April 14th heralds a period of general instability in the ethers, which peaks as the sun square’s the moon’s nodes on April 6th, at 3:45 am, PDT. Greater than normal potential exists for seismic activity, anomalous weather, radical actions, and eccentric behavior for a week or so around this juncture. Distant Pluto stations Retrograde on April 6th, in 06° Capricorn, heightening the potential for sudden events of great magnitude to take place for several days around this juncture. During the five months in which Pluto is in retrograde mode, avoid power plays, as misguided attempts at domination or manipulation often accompany this transit. Cultivate self-discipline. Investigate energy healing modalities. Intensify your spiritual studies. After just five months in Libra, the ringed planet, Saturn, retrogrades back into Virgo on the 7th till July 21st. A healthy mind in a healthy body is a prime objective of Saturn’s transit here. Likewise, efficiency and practicality are well rewarded, in time. Saturn in Virgo confers a critical eye for detail, which the wise will use to locate potential problems, personal or professional, before they manifest. 12 EARTH STAR APRIL / MAY 2010 The new moon in Aries on April 14th ushers in the first lunar cycle of the natural year. During the next two weeks, communicate your thoughts and views, but be aware that others will have their views, too, so be prepared, also, to listen. Last month’s vernal equinox theme of initiation and new beginnings continues, so prepare to launch new personal projects...but don’t make your move until after Mercury has completed its forthcoming retrograde phase. Cosmic messenger, Mercury, stations Retrograde on April 17th, at 9:06pm, PDT, in 13° Taurus (till May 11). It would be prudent to defer major decisions, purchases, or travel plans until after Mercury turns Direct on May 11th. Instead, assimilate the information you've taken in during the past three months, while Mercury was moving direct through the zodiac. Review your finances now. Revise, rewrite, or otherwise reexamine previously covered territory for overlooked details or data. The sun enters Taurus late on the 19th, for a month in which personal values and material resources—or the lack of them—are in focus. Determine whether the resources and assets already at your disposal being fully utilized. Chiron, a major asteroid associated with deep emotional wounds, enters tropical Pisces on April 20th (till July 20), and will likely bring tests of one’s faith—in self, of an avocation, or in your belief that a divine plan is at work in your life—in the weeks and months ahead. Venus enters Gemini late on the 24th, where it will remain till May 19th. For the next month, emotions are subject to being cold-processed logically, via the mind, instead of percolating gently down to one’s conscious awareness, filtered through one's feelings. There’s a greater willingness to travel in pursuit of pleasure and social activities while Venus resides in the sign of curiosity, conversation, and inquiry. Wit, charm and the gentle art of conversation will be highly desirable now. Around the time that Saturn opposes Uranus precisely on the 26th, it might seem as though the more structured aspects of your life, such as your job, your daily routine, and close relationships, have become rather stale and are in dire need of freshening up. Or perhaps stability and security may be lacking now, leading to a sense of powerlessness, with little or no control over circumstances. One way or another, disruptions in one’s daily routine can bring frustration. Responsibilities can weigh heavily, and great patience and forbearance may be called for. However, whatever changes or adjustments are made now can eventually help to make your life more interesting, and perhaps more profitable. When the full moon culminates in 08°07' Scorpio on the 28th, it also heralds the arrival of Wesak, the Buddha Festival, celebrating the annual reemergence of the Buddha energies on Earth, and is widely held to be the most powerful and spiritual full moon of the year. Meditate on love now. Be prepared for what you value highly to be put to the test, including your attachment to people, places, belongings or even habits. Be honest with yourself about your needs, and your means. Safeguard your income sources and assets. Passions and desires will intensify, so chill out! www.earthstarmag.com Down To Earth Astrology The sun and Mercury (now in retrograde) align in conjunction in 09° Taurus on the 28th, just a few hours after the lunation. Be alert to fleeting financial opportunities but refrain from impulse spending. Reevaluate a current fiscal arrangement; if necessary, renegotiate terms. Get in touch with your thoughts and feelings about things that you value. Review your motivations, plans, and intentions. Intuition and perceptions are heightened on May 3rd, when Mercury trines tiny Pluto. Insights can be gained into ‘cause and effect,’ how your thinking and thought processes actually create your reality. With both planets currently in retrograde, reconsider recent business decisions and future plans, and be prepared to act after Mercury turns direct on May 11th. The sun squares Mars on May 4th, when you’ll need to channel these dynamic energies into something creative that provides a sense of satisfaction. Be aware in and of all that you do now, as problems could arise from aggressive or inconsiderate behavior. Try not to take yourself too seriously. May 7th is a day filled with the potential for romance, as loving Venus aligns harmoniously with macho Mars. Indeed, it could be ‘thrills galore’ for some, now, as harmony reigns between and within the sexes, for the time being. Seek funding for a project or cause dear to your heart. This aspect provides a favorable influence that supports most forms of creative self-expression. After twenty-five days in retrograde, Mercury stations direct on May 11th, in 03° Taurus. Mental processes begin to accelerate now, signaling the ‘all clear’ to move ahead with plans. However, avoid making snap decisions, as there’s likely to be a tendency towards impatience for several days. May’s new moon arrives on the 13th, in 24° Taurus, and is a time in which to assess your need for material security— your ‘comfort zone.’ How much or how little money or stuff do you actually need to feel comfortable and secure? Buy some new plants for your home www.earthstarmag.com and garden. When the sun trines Saturn on the 18th, constructive progress can be made towards career or educational objectives. If necessary, seek advice or guidance from a sage elder, or one in authority. Put your creative talents to practical use. The sun enters the airy, mutable sign of Gemini late on May 20th, a harbinger that mental activity is about to increase in the month ahead, and the thirst for knowledge and fresh input must be assuaged. Enroll in a course or study program. Become more aware of your everyday environment, and how you interact with it. Jupiter forms a precise opposition to Saturn on the 22nd, a juncture around which it may seem especially difficult to make professional progress or you may feel that your ambitions are being thwarted, either by a lack of opportunity or simply bad timing. If you find yourself vacillating between optimism and caution now, you most assuredly won’t be alone. While this, is not an ideal influence under which to begin a new venture, it can be quite helpful if you are in a position to expand a current business, as you would be more likely to do so with a higher degree of caution. The challenge here is to strike a balance between these two opposing forces in order to maximize the considerable potential for achievement that is, nonetheless, available. For Jupiter, when all is said and done, is still the planet most associated with good fortune. An opposition between Venus and Pluto culminates on the 23rd, a cosmic ‘heads up’ to exercise caution in all financial matters. There may be conflict over joint finances, or problems with business relationships. As passions will also rise, be alert to seduction or manipulation. The full moon culminates on May 27 in 07° Sagittarius. Think before you act or speak your mind; make sure your communications and intentions are fully understood, especially by you! Emotional or intellectual independence may become an issue now. This could be a time of relocation for some. A major disturbance in ‘the force’ occurs when Uranus enters Aries on May 27th, its first visit to the first zodiacal sign since March 1935—for an initial ten-week sojourn before retrograding back into Pisces on August 13th until March 11th, 2011. It will then remain in Aries until May 2018. Freedom of action is important under this planetary influence, when the spirit of adventure is strong and can foster extremely individualistic, unconventional, even foolhardy behavior. A continual need for new experiences in order to feel satisfied must be assuaged. Be alert to compulsive actions and a ‘change at any cost’ attitude, as this could undermine your efforts to improve your lot in life. A willingness to cooperate with others will be helpful in achieving your goals. This brief transit will provide a fore taste of what’s to come during the next seven years—an exciting period of innovation and invention geared towards the betterment of humanity. Saturn, planet of discipline and karma, stations direct on May 30th, in 28° Virgo. Consider what you have learned about your ability to express your creativity in the workplace during Saturn’s 4-1/2 months in review mode. How have you responded to the professional opportunities or challenges that have come your way? As the ringed planet gradually gathers forward momentum, tangible progress towards coveted career goals may soon become perceptible, or possible. Distant Neptune stations retrograde on the 31st, in 29° Aquarius, when unresolved issues, neglected feelings, or emotional undercurrents from the past can surface, which may need to be reviewed for greater insight and selfunderstanding during the next five months. Following is a general overview of how the planetary trends for April/May, 2010 apply to each sun sign. If you know your rising sign (Ascendant), read that, too, for additional insights. APRIL / MAY 2010 EARTH STAR 13 Down To Earth Astrology Aries (March 20—April 19) It's birthday time for Aries natives and the beginning of your personal year, when your creative drive shifts into high gear. Move ahead with pet projects now. As far as money is concerned, it may be a matter of easy come, easy go in early April, although your financial prospects in general appear bright. Indeed, for some there’s a possibility of a windfall from your past professional efforts. However, it may be that much of what does come your way might already be committed or spoken for, or is quickly spent on ill-conceived purchases or risky ventures. Your ruling planet, Mars, is the likely culprit here, encouraging impulsive actions and a cavalier approach to handling money. Even so, May’s new moon in your solar second house on the 13th could breathe new life into your financial fortunes, bringing a stabilizing and more level headed influence to help you press on toward professional or educational objectives in the weeks ahead. Taurus (April 19—May 20) A very pleasant and generally positive beginning to April could be marred by some tension within your domestic environment. It may be that work or activities around the home must take precedence over less pressing items on your personal agenda which you’d rather be pursuing. Even so, with a cool head and by employing your innate sense of diplomacy you can breeze through your household chores or family commitments and still get around to most everything on your personal ‘to do’list. Some well chosen words and a little extra sensitivity to the needs of your partner or a significant other will help to ease whatever tensions might develop. Besides, this is birthday time for Bull-clan members, and you’ll want to move into your new solar cycle with as much positive energy as you can muster. Make some quiet time for yourself, to consider your hopes and wishes for the future, and ways to make them a reality. Gemini (May 20—June 21) You won’t be short of ideas for furthering your ambitions at this time, but manifesting the necessary resources is another question. Therefor, your focus shifts to accomplishing just that, and with patience, perseverance, and a professional approach, you could have cause for optimism before this forecast period is over. The presence of lucky Venus in your sign can help you in your quest, by bringing an element of good fortune your way. Be ever mindful of the impression you create, for your personality, professionalism, and proficiency at what you do can be valuable assets now. The efforts of a partner may prove just as valuable as your own to the success of a creative venture. While your ruling planet, Mercury, is in retrograde (April 17-May 11) in your solar twelfth house, set aside some quiet time in which to contemplate your strategy. Cancer (June 21—July22) Spring is the time of year when your ambition can be powerfully rekindled, following the vernal equinox and the sun’s entrance into Aries 14 EARTH STAR APRIL / MAY 2010 and your solar tenth house. Some Crab-clan members will be contemplating a change in career direction or a break with the past in some way. Weigh your options very carefully; avoid the impulse to make important or irrevocable changes simply for the sake of change. Instead, while Mercury retrogrades in your solar eleventh house from April 17-May 11, consider your long-range goals, and especially your motivations. With the arrival of May’s new moon (13th) in this most progressive sector of your solar chart, you’ll feel more confident about the direction you need to take, and what it may take to reach your destination. Leo (July 22—August 23) Spring is the time of year when you look to expand your interests, most likely through entrepreneurial or creative endeavors. With the sun in Aries—a complementary fire sign—and your solar ninth house, you’re keen to reach out to the world at large and to share your knowledge and wisdom in gainful pursuits. As a cosmic bonus, providing additional impetus and drive to help further your efforts, you have Aries’ ruler, Mars, in your solar first house throughout this forecast period. Financial matters will likely be the most challenging life-arena, where your patience will be tested, along with your budgetary acumen, now and throughout the summer. Nonetheless, you can make great strides forward in your professional pursuits, with the possibility of augmenting your cash flow. Virgo (August 23—September 23) Libra (September 23—October 23) A time for regeneration is at hand, when you’ll want to renew and revivify yourself, in preparation for a new expansive trend that is shortly to begin. Let go of that which you no longer need or which in some way keeps you tethered to the past. Lighten your load to ease your passage through life, of emotions, possessions, or just stuff. Spend time out in nature whenever you can; it will both lift your spirits and keep you grounded. With Saturn revisiting your sign for the next three months, you may have the chance to demonstrate your efficiency and practicality in the workplace, in a role with which you’re quite familiar. Feeling stuck or trapped, you might also be contemplating a change in career, or in pursuing an occupation closer to your heart’s desire. While your sign’s ruler, Mercury, is retrograde (April 17-May 11), Carefully review your options, and most certainly look before you leap! Spring often heralds your reemergence into the world, after a period of introspection, when you feel more outgoing and ready to connect with kindred spirits. Although Saturn sits upon your solar ascendant, lending a more serious tone to your demeanor, it moves out of your sign and back into Virgo, allowing you to relax and to absorb the lessons from recent challenges and experiences. Your passion for life increases now, with loving Venus, your sign’s ruler, stimulating your senses from your solar eighth house. So, too, can the flames of love spring www.earthstarmag.com Down To Earth Astrology forth, perhaps unexpectedly, from the embers of a fire that burns within. A new and fascinating interest might take your fancy now. Spend some quality time outdoors, to reconnect with and be inspired by nature's beauty. Don’t worry too much about the future, or fret over injustices from the past. Live your life in the here and now, because you’re ready to be free at last! Scorpio (October 23—November 22) The elimination of outworn, habitual, and unhelpful thought patterns can be a slow and laborious process, and yet Pluto, your sign’s ruler, is equal to the task. Its presence in Capricorn and your solar third house for the past eighteen months has made it all too clear that rigid, inflexible behaviors and beliefs rooted firmly in the past have no place in your life today, and serve only to inhibit your worldly progress. New people enter your life, in response to a shift in your attitudes, and a newfound belief in yourself. As your polarity gradually shifts into a more positive range, those you attract will reflect your progress; all you have to do is acknowledge how far you’ve actually come. As Mercury retrogrades through your solar seventh house (April 17-May 11), consider the value of significant others in your life, particularly in light of your evolving awareness. Sagittarius (November 21—December 21) In an attempt to break with the past you consider new ways to harness your innate creativity to enhance your career prospects. You’re certainly not short of bright ideas, but practical applications may seem illusive. Safeguard your assets by avoiding speculative ventures now. Instead, invest your energies and drive in efforts geared towards selfimprovement. While Mercury retrogrades through your solar sixth house (April 17-May 11), consider how you might enhance your job satisfaction, or derive more pleasure from what you do for a living. Likewise, review your dietary regimen and make any necessary adjustments to accommodate your body’s changing needs. You could benefit, too, from improving your health and fitness levels, in the weeks following May’s Taurus new moon (13th); you’ll need all the energy and stamina you can muster as you work diligently towards your goals. Capricorn (December 21—January 19) With the arrival of spring comes an emotional recharge, an upwelling of positive energy from within, which you can draw upon to fortify yourself for the next creative project on your agenda. And you may have several in mind. While Pluto remains in close proximity to your solar ascendant, in square to Saturn on your solar midheaven, it’s very likely that you’re still trying to get a handle on your next personal or professional objective. The world, indeed, keeps on turning, as does your personal sphere of activity and influence, but sometimes you simply www.earthstarmag.com wish that the fickle wheel of fortune would just hurry up and spin in your favor. Well, during this forecast period, it just might! Pay attention to details and nuances in the subtext of your life, particularly while Mercury is retrograde from April 17-May 11. There might be valuable information, clues or contacts that you may have overlooked, that could provide that vital missing piece to your puzzle of life in the here and now. Aquarius (January 19—February 18) Change your thinking, and your life will follow suit, reflecting ideas and opportunities commensurate with your mental space. As a zodiacal Aquarian, you are blessed with a virtually constant flow of novel notions impinging upon your awareness, but it’s up to you to act if you wish to manifest them in reality. Actions do, indeed, speak louder than words, a tenet you’d be wise to adhere to now rather than engage your tongue before thinking. Sometimes you just have to allow your deeds to do the talking for you if you want someone to really get the message. Such a time presents itself within this forecast period. While your financial flow might seem far from stable, lady luck can smile upon you from time to time, especially if you follow your instincts, as they may be right on the money! Pisces (February 18—March 20) Some of the things in life that you value highly may be put to the test in early spring, whether it’s your belief in yourself, or an avocation, or even the existence of a divine plan. Seek imaginative ways to add to your cash flow following April’s new moon (14th) in Aries and your solar second house. Don’t be shy about speaking up for what you want now, as others are more likely to cede to your wishes. Just be tactful and sincere in your approach, as egos could be rather fragile at present. Mercury’s retrograde transit through your solar third house (April 17-May 11) could find you questioning a recent decision. Examine the facts then make up your mind, basing your conclusions more on instinct than logic. APRIL / MAY 2010 EARTH STAR 15 Rapid Rise in Seed Prices Draws U.S. Scrutiny By William Neuman o n s a n t o researchers in Stonington, Ill., are working to develop new soybean varieties that will be tolerant to agricultural herbicide and have greater yields. Hugh Grant, Monsanto chief, said competition was increasing as biotech crops matured. Such price increases for seeds—the most important purchase a farmer makes each year—are part of Hugh Grant an unprecedented climb that began more than a decade ago, stemming from the advent of genetically engineered crops and the rapid concentration in the seed industry that accompanied it. The price increases have not only irritated many farmers, they have caught the attention of the Obama administration. The Justice Department began an antitrust investigation of the seed industry last year, with an apparent focus on Monsanto, which controls much of M the market for the expensive bioengineered traits that make crops resistant to insect pests and herbicides. The investigation is just one facet of a push by the Obama administration to take a closer look at competition—or the lack thereof—in agriculture, from the dairy industry to livestock to commodity crops, like corn and soybeans. “I think most farmers would look to have more competition in the industry,” said Laura L. Foell, who raises corn and soybeans on nine hundred acres in Schaller, Iowa. The Iowa attorney general, Tom Miller, has also been scrutinizing Monsanto’s market dominance. The company’s genetically engineered traits are in the vast majority of corn and soybeans grown in the United States, Mr. Miller said. “That gives them considerable power, and questions arise about how that power is used,” he said. Critics charge that Monsanto has used license agreements with smaller seed companies to gain an unfair advantage over competitors and to block cheaper generic versions of its seeds from eventually entering the market. DuPont, a rival company, also claims Monsanto has unfairly barred it from combining biotech traits in a way that would benefit farmers. In a recent interview at Monsanto’s headquarters in St. Louis, its chief executive, Hugh Grant, said that while his company might be the market leader, competition was increasing as the era of biotech crops matured. “We were the first out of the blocks, and I think what you see now is a bunch of people catching up and aggressively competing, and I’m fighting with them,” Mr. Grant said. He said farmers chose the company’s products because they liked the results in the field, not because of any untoward conduct on Monsanto’s part. Yet in a seed market that Monsanto dominates, the jump in prices has been nothing short of stunning. Including the sharp increases last year, Agriculture Department figures show that corn seed prices have risen 135 percent since 2001. Soybean prices went up 108 percent over that period. By contrast, the Consumer Price Index rose only twenty percent in that period. Many farmers have been willing to pay a premium price because the genetically engineered seeds that make up most of the market come with advantages. Genetic modifications for both corn and soybeans make the crops resistant to herbicides, simplifying weed control and saving labor, fuel and machinery costs. Many genetically engineered corn and cotton seeds also resist insect pests, which cuts down on chemical spraying. Lee Quarles, a Monsanto spokesman, said the price increases were justified because the quality of the seeds had been going up, and new biotech traits kept being added. For example, he said, many corn varieties now include multiple genes to battle insect pests, raising their value. Mr. Quarles said higher prices were justified because the traits saved farmers money and made their operations more efficient. Monsanto began investing heavily in biotechnology in the 1980s— ahead of most other agricultural companies. In the mid-1990s, it became the first to widely market genetically engineered seeds for row crops, introducing soybeans containing the so-called Roundup Ready gene, which allowed plants to tolerate spraying of its popular Roundup weed killer. Soon after, it began selling corn seed engineered with a gene to resist insect pests. The number of biotech plant traits has grown since then, and other large companies—including DuPont, Dow Chemical, Syngenta, BASF and Bayer CropScience— have gotten into the business. But Monsanto has taken advantage of its head start. Today more than ninety percent of soybeans and more than eighty percent of the corn grown in this country are genetically engineered. A majority of those crops contain one or more Monsanto genes. As biotechnology has spread, Monsanto and its competitors have bought dozens of smaller seed companies, increasing the concentration of market power in the industry. Monsanto sells its own branded seed varieties, like Dekalb in corn and Asgrow in soybeans, to farmers. But it has expanded its influence and profits by licensing those traits to hundreds of small seed companies, allowing them to incorporate the traits in the seeds they sell. It has also granted licenses to the other large trait developers, allowing them to create combinations of engineered traits in a process known as stacking. Monsanto says that its licensing shows it is the opposite of a monopolist, encouraging rather than hampering competition. But critics say the licenses give Monsanto excessive control. Seed company executives said the licenses were sometimes worded in a way that compelled them to sell Monsanto traits over those of its competitors. Mr. Quarles denied that, saying the contracts contain sales incentives typical of the industry. Some of the most pointed accusations have come in a court battle between Monsanto and DuPont. Last year Monsanto sued its rival, saying DuPont had used a Monsanto trait to create a gene combination that was not permitted in its licensing agreement. DuPont countered by charging that Monsanto was using its market power to strong-arm competitors and quash innovation that would benefit farmers and consumers. In January, Monsanto won a partial victory. A federal judge ruled that the license barred DuPont from creating the gene stack. But the judge said that DuPont could move ahead with its antitrust claims, which, if successful, could potentially nullify the stacking ban. DuPont made another accusation that caught the attention of farmers and regulators, saying that Monsanto was trying to head off the eventual entry into the marketplace of generic Roundup Ready seeds. The company’s patent on the Roundup Ready trait in soybeans expires before the 2014 planting season, meaning that, just as in the pharmaceutical business, rivals would be free to sell a cheaper version. Farmers would also be free to save seed from one year to the next, a money-saving step they are now barred from taking. But DuPont charged that Monsanto was trying to force seed companies to switch prematurely to its second-generation Roundup Ready soybeans and taking other steps to make the entry of generics more difficult. Monsanto responded by announcing that it would not block companies from selling a generic version of Roundup Ready seeds. But farmers have continued to fret that cheaper generic seeds may be at risk. The animals absorb negative emotions such as guilt, anger, jealousy, and other issues that stop people from moving forward and reflect these back in their animal behavior. Through her work with countless animals suffering from behavioral disorders or who have been sick or injured, del Monte learned that the physical healing of the animals is directly tied to the emotional healing of the people they are close to. Grey Aliens and the Harvesting of Souls The Conspiracy to Genetically Tamper with Humanity By Nigel Kerner In 1997 Nigel Kerner first introduced the notion of aliens known as Greys coming to Earth, explaining that Greys are sophisticated biological robots created by an extraterrestrial civilization they have long since outlived. In this new book Kerner reveals that the Greys are seeking to master death by obtaining something humans possess that they do not: souls. Through the manipulation of human DNA, these aliens hope to create their own souls and, thereby, escape the entropic grip of the material universe in favor of the timeless realm of spirit. Her investigation into ayahuasca— which she undertook in collaboration with more than a dozen traditional Mestizo folk curanderos, shamans, and fellow ethnobotanists—focuses on the use of this revolutionary plant in the treatment of recalcitrant psychological and emotional disorders. She also shares some of her theories that prove that the ancient Maya used psychedelic plants as part of their religious rituals, thereby demonstrating the impact of plant psychedelics on human prehistory. In addition, Dobkin de Rios examines altered states of consciousness derived from the use of biofeedback and hypnosis and discusses her current work on the deleterious effects of drug tourism in the Amazon. Sounds True. 2 CDs APRIL / MAY 2010 EARTH STAR 21 Are You Getting Cheated When Buying ‘Organic’ Produce? By Dr. Joseph Mercola Dr. Mercola’s Comments: isleading organic labeling is still a major problem, even at some of the most trusted organic food stores, such as Whole Foods Market. The signs say “Organic,” but the produce sometimes turn out to be anything but. Just like organic shopper Richard Andree in this video, you too must take the initiative to double-check the veracity of your grocery store’s organic claims, or else you might not get what you pay for. M Trust… and Verify! Many people would never question a store like Whole Foods, but it’s important to remember that although their company values may be higher than some others, Whole Foods is an “industrial organic” company, with more than 270 stores throughout North America, Hawaii, and the UK, and will operate as such. Their focus is no longer being a distribution center for locally-grown organics. You’re just as likely to find 22 EARTH STAR APRIL / MAY 2010 imported asparagus from Argentina as you are finding a locally-grown seasonal crop. Aside from nullifying the environmental benefits of locally grown organics, are those “organic” veggies from the other side of the world truly organic?Beware that there’s a 50/50 chance they do not meet the American USDA organic standards. It’s easy to become discouraged with the entire business of organics, and begin to fret about ever being able to get your hands on truly healthy food. But as I said the other day in “Buying Local Should Include Buying Organic,” the ground rules for healthy food shopping have never changed, merely the labels. And many of Whole Foods’ canned or boxed items contain ingredients most health conscious shoppers would not expect to see, like high fructose corn syrup (which is a major source of genetically modified corn, and the number one source of calories in the US diet) and MSG (a neurotoxin. For a great resource on how to find hidden MSG, please see the website www.MSGMYTH.com for detailed listings. www.earthstarmag.com Whole Foods is clearly a superior source of wholesome foods than most grocery stores, and I regularly shop there. However, they are still a Fortune 500 Company that owes its allegiance to its shareholders, so blind trust is not advised Remember that only about 30 percent of their fresh produce comes from local producers, and they DO carry conventional produce and other conventional food items as well. So label checking is perhaps even more important here, since local and imported organics, along with conventional goods, are freely intermingled throughout the store. The Organic Label There are a few different organic labels out there, but only one relates directly to foods: the USDA Organic seal. This seal is one of your best commercial assurances of organic quality, so when in doubt: if it doesn’t carry the USDA Organic seal, you might not be getting what you’re paying for. Growers and manufacturers of organic products bearing the USDA seal have to meet the strictest standards of any of the currently available organic labels The USDA’s National Organic Program (NOP) took effect October 21, 2002, and regulates the standards for any farm, wild crop harvesting, or handling operation that wants to sell an agricultural product as organically produced. The labeling requirements of the NOP apply to raw, fresh products and processed products that contain organic agricultural ingredients. In order to qualify as organic, a product must be grown and processed using organic farming methods that recycle resources and promote biodiversity. can they contain traces of heavy metals or other contaminants in excess of tolerances set by the FDA. The pesticide residue level cannot be higher than 5 percent of the maximum EPA pesticide tolerance. Tip: Check the PLU Sticker Too! Although I wouldn’t rely on this as your one and only strategy, checking the PLU stickers on fresh produce can also offer an indication as to its true nature. • Conventionally-grown produce will carry a PLU sticker beginning with the numbers 3 or 4 • The PLU sticker on organic produce will start with the number 9 How to Prioritize Your Spending on Organics With every food manufacturer jumping on the organic bandwagon and all the shenanigans going on, you can easily overspend on mislabeled, or downright fraudulent, organic purchases. Here are some tips on how to prioritize your spending, so you know you’re getting the most bang for your buck: Meats and Poultry—If you’re on a tight budget, but want to improve your diet by shopping organic, this is definitely where you’ll want to start. Since animal products tend to bioaccumulate toxins, concentrating them to far higher concentrations than are typically present in vegetables, I strongly recommend you buy only organically-raised meats. When choosing organic beef, taking the additional step to make certain the cows are grass-fed exclusively, especially the three months before they are slaughtered, can make a big difference in the quality, taste, and nutrient content of the beef. Crops CANNOT be grown with any of the following: • • • • Synthetic pesticides Bioengineered genes Petroleum-based fertilizers Sewage sludge-based fertilizers Organic livestock must have access to the outdoors and cannot be given antibiotics or growth hormones. Organic products cannot be irradiated, are not allowed to contain preservatives or flavor enhancing chemicals, nor www.earthstarmag.com APRIL / MAY 2010 EARTH STAR 23 For chickens, it would be important to make sure they are cage-free, or free-range, chickens. Fresh produce—When it comes to produce, if you can’t find the best of both worlds, which is locallygrown organics, then buying fresh, vibrant locally grown conventional produce may actually be better than wilted organics. However, it can be tricky, since some conventionally grown produce simply LOOKS fresher due to all the chemicals they’ve been treated with. Perhaps your best bet, if you can’t find locally grown organics, is to opt for USDA certified organic, but not imported organic, over the conventionally grown variety. Just be aware that wilted organic produce is not going to provide the nutrition that a fresh one will, even if it’s conventionally grown. That said, organic produce has been shown to have a much higher nutrient-content than conventional fresh produce, which should offer plenty of incentive to locate organic produce that has also been grown locally. On average, conventional produce has only 83 percent of the nutrients of organic produce. Personal care products—A good rule of thumb is that if it’s not safe to eat, it’s not safe to put on your skin either, since the ingredients are absorbed directly into your blood stream. One of the best sources for finding safe personal care products is the Organic Consumer’s Association’s Skin Deep database. Also remember that the only way to ensure your personal care product is truly organic is to look for the USDA Organic seal, which certifies that it complies with organic food standards and is free of petrochemicals. Pay Now, or Pay Later… My personal view of why you’d want an organic lifestyle is that although you may spend more money on organic food and personal care products today, your payoff of good health should more than make up for it – and reduce your health care costs in the future. It makes sense to me to invest a little bit more now so I can avoid paying LARGE medical bills later on, but more importantly, I can avoid the physical and mental disability and dysfunction that inevitably follows from a careless, unhealthy lifestyle. Making sure you’re not being misled by labels in your search for a healthier lifestyle is unfortunately part of this process. However, by educating yourself about what to look for, talking to your grocer, and sharing information with family, friends and neighbors, you can help the movement toward healthier food choices and honest labeling. Their owners—and pathology and autopsy reports—have suggested a link between the chips and the formation of the fast-growing cancers. In the town of Paeonian Springs, Va., a five-year-old male Bullmastiff named Seamus died in February, nine months after developing a “hemangio-sarcoma”—a rare, malignant form of cancer that strikes connective tissues and can kill even humans in three to six months. The tumor appeared last May between the dog’s shoulder blades where a microchip had been implanted; by September, a “large mass” had grown with the potential to spread to the lungs, liver and spleen, according a pathology report from the Blue Ridge Veterinary Clinic in Purcellville, Va. Originally scheduled to receive just a biopsy, Seamus underwent emergency surgery. A foot-long inci- H www.earthstarmag.com sion was opened to extract the four-pound-three-ounce tumor, and four drains were needed to remove fluid where the tumor had developed. When Howard Gillis, the dog’s owner, picked up his pet the following day, the attending veterinarian stunned him with this question: Did you know your dog had been microchipped twice, and that both chips were in or around the tumor? “While we knew of one chip, which we had put in him at a free local county clinic, we knew nothing of a second chip,” Gillis said. “We believe one of them was put in Seamus by the breeder from whom we bought him when he was about nine months old.” By December, the cancer was back—and the energetic, playful one hundredand-fifty-pound dog was huffing and puffing, struggling to walk. Seamus “was one hundred-and-fifty pounds of heart,” Gillis said in a recent interview. “He wanted to live.” Gillis said he “got the microchip because I didn’t want him stolen. I thought I was doing right. There were never any warnings about what a microchip could do, APRIL / MAY 2010 EARTH STAR 25 but I saw it first-hand. That cancer was something I could see growing every day, and I could see it taking his life ... It just ate him up.” To keep his beloved dog from suffering further, he had him put to sleep two months later. In Memphis, a five-year-old Yorkshire Terrier named Scotty was diagnosed with cancer at the Cloverleaf Animal Clinic in December. A tumor between the dog’s shoulder blades—precisely where a microchip had been embedded—was described as malignant lymphoma. A tumor the size of a small balloon was removed; encased in it was a microchip. Scotty was given no more than a year to live. But the dog’s owner, Linda Hawkins, wasn’t satisfied with just a prognosis: She wanted to know whether the presence of the microchip had anything to do with Scotty’s illness. Initially, her veterinarian was skeptical that a chip implant could trigger cancer; research has shown that vaccine injections in dogs and cats can lead to tumors. In a December pathology report on Scotty, Evan D. McGee wrote: “I was previously suspicious of a prior unrelated injection site reaction” beneath the tumor. “However, it is possible that this inflammation is associated with other foreign debris, possibly from the microchip.” Observing the glass-encapsulated tag under a microscope, he noted it was partially coated with a translucent material, normally used to keep embedded microchips from moving around the body. “This coating could be the material inciting the inflammatory response,” McGee wrote. Hawkins sent the pathology report to HomeAgain, the national pet recovery and identification 26 EARTH STAR APRIL / MAY 2010 network that endorses microchipping of pets. After having a vet review the document, the company said the chip did not cause Scotty’s tumor—then in January sent Hawkins a three hundred dollar check to cover her clinical expenses, no questions asked. “I find it hard to believe that a company will just give away three hundred dollars to somebody who calls in, unless there is something bad going on,” Hawkins says. Having spent four thousand dollars on medical treatment for Scotty since December, Hawkins accepted the money. But she says it hardly covers her nine hundred dollar monthly outlays for chemotherapy and does little to ease her pet’s suffering. “Scotty is just a baby. He won’t live the fifteen years he’s supposed to ...I did something I thought a responsible pet owner should—microchip your pet—and to think that it killed him ... It just breaks your heart.” Scotty and Seamus aren’t the only pets to have suffered adverse reactions from microchips. Published reports have detailed malignant tumors in two other chipped dogs; in one dog, the researchers said cancer appeared linked to the presence of the embedded chip; in the other, the cancer’s cause was uncertain. Last year, a Chihuahua bled to death in the arms of his distraught owners in Agua Dulce, Calif., just hours after undergoing a chipping proce- www.earthstarmag.com dure. The veterinarian who performed the chipping confirmed that dog died from blood loss associated with the microchip. In another case, a kitten died instantly when a microchip was accidentally injected into its brain stem. And in another, a cat was paralyzed when an implant entered its spinal column. The implants have been widely reported to migrate within animals’ bodies, and can cause abscesses and infection. In 2007, The Associated Press reported on a series of veterinary and toxicology studies that found that microchip implants had “induced” malignant tumors in some lab animals. Published in veterinary and toxicology journals between 1996 and 2006, the studies found that between one and ten percent of lab mice and rats injected with microchips developed malignant tumors, most of them encasing the implants. Verichip protest, May 1st, 2009 www.earthstarmag.com APRIL / MAY 2010 EARTH STAR 27 Exploring The Next Level of Healing for Humanity By M. Darren Gregor new science is emerging that is changing our traditional understanding of health and healing. The latest scientific research is focusing on experiments, which are quantifying the effects of energy, light and information on human beings. Leading the way are an international team of world-renowned scientists, William Tiller, PhD, Gary Schwartz, PhD, and Konstantin Kortokov, PhD, with their studies of the Reconnective Healing® frequencies, first discovered by Eric Pearl, D.C. The powerful and profound results of this research, anticipated to be published later this year, are attracting the attention of the best and brightest in the scientific community. Dr. Tiller, Professor Emeritus, Stanford University, author of eight books, 250 scientific papers and star of the film What The Bleep!?, has been conducting research on how the physical properties of a room or space change as a result of energy healing frequencies entering that room. Dr. Tiller conducted his experiment on the Reconnective Healing frequencies for the first time at one of Eric Pearl’s seminars held in Sedona, AZ in 2006, and found the results so extraordinary that he repeated the study in 2007 in Los Angeles, CA and continued his inquiry into this phenomenon at The Reconnection Mastery Conference in Los Angeles this past September. According to Dr. Tiller, the Reconnective Healing frequencies bring healing “beyond just what has been classically known as energy healing into a broader spectrum of energy, light and information.” A 28 EARTH STAR APRIL / MAY 2010 What Dr. Tiller has found is that these intelligent frequencies begin changing the quantum field effects of the room, or “conditioning the space,” easily thirty-six hours or more before a seminar even begins, dramatically increasing the excess free thermodynamic energy in the room. In other words, if this were simply the energy we find in energy healing, the temperature of the room would have increased by three hundred degrees centigrade. With Reconnective Healing, while the actual room temperature does not change, the amount of energy, light and information charging the room does, palpably and dramatically. In Dr. Tiller’s words, “As we continued to monitor that space, we found two days later the increase in this effective energy content was huge. [If we ask] ‘What is the effective temperature increase for that normal space, how much must it go up to give the same excess energy content as was in Eric’s workshop two days after he started?” [The answer is] “The effective temperature increase for a normal space would have been 300 degrees Centigrade! That is huge.” The initial findings are highly significant. Dr. Tiller continues, “This shift of energy is what allows normal human beings to enter a room and later to walk out with an ability to heal others and themselves, regardless of their background or education.” www.earthstarmag.com In another research study, Dr. Schwartz, along with Drs. Melinda Connor and Ann Baldwin from the Laboratory for Advances in Consciousness and Health at The University of Arizona, focus their research on the people who attend Reconnective Healing seminars. Dr. Schwartz and his colleagues conducted their “baseline energy healing” studies both at Dr. Schwarz’s lab at the University of Arizona and at seminars around the world. These studies measured people’s abilities to work with, feel, transmit and receive light and other electromagnetic frequencies before and after they attended the seminar. What they found was dramatic. Of the more than one hundred plus people who participated in the study, all walked out with permanently expanded and new electromagnetic abilities following the Reconnective Healing seminar, whether they had never studied healing or if they were masters/teachers of the various energy healing techniques known today, old or new. While Dr. Tiller has been measuring the dramatic field effects that occur at these seminars and Dr. Schwartz has been focusing his research on those who attend those seminars, Dr. Korotokov has studied both field effects and effects on individual seminar attendees. Using his proprietary methodologies and cutting edge imaging and measurement devices, Dr. Korotkov’s research corroborates both Dr. Tiller and Dr. Schwartz’s findings. More specifically, he has measured and documented significant field effects (which he terms “coherence effects”) that occur while teaching is conducted at the seminar. These coherence effects are most dramatic and powerful when a new concept or exercise is introduced into the seminar, documented by dramatic spikes in both the intensity and size of the seminar room’s field. He theorizes these coherence effects might be the conduit allowing attendees to gain these new abilities and become master healers in just one short seminar weekend. Additionally, Dr. Korotkov’s research suggests that by simply sitting in the seminar room itself, attendees are more likely to receive positive health effects. In fact, many seminar attendees have reported physical and other healings just from sitting in the seminar room. What impact are these and other studies on energy having on the scientific and medical community? Traditional science and medicine can no longer www.earthstarmag.com approach health and healing the same way. New scientific exploration by Drs. Tiller, Schwartz and Korotkov, as well as what is documented in Dr. Pearl’s own bestselling book, The Reconnection: Heal Others, Heal Yourself, are paving the way towards validating the powerful effects that energy, light and information can have on people. This type of exploration is contributing to advancing humanity to the next stage of evolution. APRIL / MAY 2010 EARTH STAR 29 Energy Efficient Appliances? No Thanks Is this duo really doing that much harm? By Jodi Helmer do all I can to reduce my carbon footprint: I take canvas bags with me to the supermarket to avoid using plastic, eschew bottled water and do my best to eat organic produce when I can. At home, I have traded all of my incandescent bulbs for CFLs and I keep the thermostat set at sixtyeight degrees. So you might be surprised to learn that I haven’t filled my kitchen with energy efficient appliances to replace the standard ones I picked out at the home improvement superstore several years ago. Sure, many eco-conscious folks out there feel strongly about the benefit of the new refrigerators, dish washers or washing machines that carry the blue Energy Star logos. Here’s the thing: I am not one of them. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not opposed to Energy Star-certified appliances. I think the Environmental Protection Agency’s Energy Star program, launched in I 30 EARTH STAR APRIL / MAY 2010 1992 to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions through more efficient energy use, is an excellent idea and one that offers enormous benefits. In 2008 alone, Energy Star helped Americans save eighteen billion dollars on their energy bills. But when it comes to appliances, only some of us need to take action—like families who own avocadocolored refrigerators that have been running since the Reagan era, or homeowners whose 1920s bungalows are devoid of dishwashers. For the rest of us trading up newish appliances that are in good working order isn’t all that efficient at all. The EPA agrees with me. The program was never meant to encourage people to trade in their newer appliances for the latest models. “It’s not the EPA’s goal to tell people to throw out a three-year-old refrigerator. The jump in energy efficiency [by trading up to an Energy Star model] isn’t worth it,” explains Maria Vargas, www.earthstarmag.com spokesperson for the EPA’s Energy Star program. “Our basic rule of thumb is that if an appliance is more than fifteen years old, it’s time to think about replacing it.” Even the statistics pointing to the energy savings of certified appliances compare current Energy Star models to ones that were manufactured more than a decade ago. And according to the National Resources Defense Council, the newest energy efficient refrigerators— including those that are not Energy Star certified—consume seventy-five percent less energy than models made in the 1970s. And let’s face it, most homeowners aren’t still using appliances that date back to the Vietnam War. Those who are should definitely upgrade to appliances with the Energy Star logo. Yet being green is often confused with being on top of the trends and too often shoppers respond by racing out to purchase newer, shinier models of things they already own all in the name of upgrading for energy efficiency. If you’re similarly inspired, remember that of the three Rs, the first is Reduce, which means not buying something you don’t need even if it’s in the name of using less energy. And then there’s the hype. While there’s no question that Energy Star-certified appliances are the most efficient models available to consumers today, the savings that we’re supposed to benefit from might not be as significant as we’re lead to believe. According to the EPA, replacing a dishwasher manufactured before 1994 with an Energy Star model will save twenty-five dollars per year on utility costs. That’s just over two dollars per month—less than the cost of one Grande Caramel Frappuccino at Starbucks. If you do the math, you’ll realize that before the cost of the new lipstick-red frontloader is recouped, most people will have upgraded to (another) brand new model. Oft-touted statistics on energy savings don’t take into account the resources required to manufacture new appliances. They don’t expand on the waste generated from packaging and the carbon footprint associated with transporting a shipment of two-hundred-pound washing machines across the ocean, or the energy it takes to have used appliances hauled to recycling centers where refrigerants like Freon and chlorofluorocarbons must be removed and disposed of in an environmentally-responsible way before the metal is recycled. “Replacing appliances is one of the first things people think of to reduce their energy consumption because it’s the most visible,” Vargas notes. “To put it in perspective, appliances account for just thirteen percent of the average energy bill and heating and cooling account for fifty percent.” In other words, replacing appliances is not the most environmentally-friendly www.earthstarmag.com Jodi Helmer choice you can make. Homeowners who, like me, own appliances that were made post-1995, have better alternatives for saving energy: Make a point of running the dishwasher only when it’s full, use the cold water setting on the washing machine and turn the lights off when you leave the room. If I’m given the choice to upgrade to an Energy Starcertified front-loading washing machine that uses a few kWh less energy than the one I currently own, I’d rather take the extra money and put it towards signing up for green power through my utility company and writing a check to my favorite environmental charities. When it comes to saving energy, I think I’m making the better choice. Jodi Helmer is the author of The Green Year: 365 Small Things You Can Do to Make a Big Difference (Alpha, 2008). APRIL / MAY 2010 EARTH STAR 31 Time to Revisit Falsified Science of C O 2 By Dr. Tim Ball limate science is a productive pursuit with Nobel Prizes, an Oscar, billions in research funding, massive tax grabs and wealth for exploiters. Continuation of these activities partly validated the claim the disclosed files from the Climatic Research Unit (CRU) at the University of East Anglia (UEA) are of small consequence. The scandal at CRU (Climategate) is diverting from the real scandal, which is the claim CO2 is causing warming and climate change. Climategate is the greatest orchestrated fraud in scientific history, but claims about CO2 are the greatest fallacy. Climategate lets those who’ve known what was happening to avoid being ignored as conspiracy theorists. Everyone incorrectly talks about carbon when they mean CO2, which was the original focus of the claim human industrial activity was causing global warming. Theory assumed CO2 was a greenhouse gas that slowed heat escaping to space. As it increases temperature rises and it would because of increased industrial activity. This became fact immediately and challenging scientists were pushed aside. Mostly by nasty attacks from those who falsified records, rewrote historic records, distorted and misused science and statistics as the leaked CRU emails attest. Now they, their supporters, and all those benefiting, work to perpetuate the massive deception. C Selected Data and False Findings Some of this article was presented in a 2008 piece, but the CRU revelations make a revisit important. The sum32 EARTH STAR APRIL / MAY 2010 mary of work the IPCC represents is only that chosen by the IPCC to achieve their goal. Remember the email comments about including or excluding articles that supported their objective. Claims now proven false include: • an increase in CO2 precedes a temperature increase; • current atmospheric levels of CO2 are the highest on record; • and pre-industrial levels of CO2 were approximate ly 100 parts ppm lower than the present 385 ppm. The last claim is basic to the argument that humans are causing warming and climate change by increasing the levels of atmospheric CO2. In a paper submitted to a US Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation hearing Professor Zbigniew Jaworowski explains,“The basis of most of the IPCC conclusions on anthropogenic causes and on projections of climatic change is the assumption of low level of CO2 in the pre-industrial atmosphere. This assumption, based on glaciological studies, is false.” This means more when you know that Tom Wigley, who is the heart of the CRU gang, introduced the 280 ppm number to the climate science community with a 1983 paper titled, “The pre-industrial carbon dioxide level.” (Climatic Change 5, 315-320). He based his work on studies by G. S. Callendar (1938) of thousands of direct measures of atmospheric CO2 beginning in 1812. Callendar rejected most of the records, includwww.earthstarmag.com ing sixty-nine percent of the 19th century records and only selected records that established 280 ppm as the pre-industrial level. Here’s a plot of the records with Callendar’s selections circled. Figure 1: (Above) Plot of 19th century CO2 levels Source: Jaworowski, NZCPR Research, 20 September 2008 p.20 popularized by the IPCC. Review of available literature raise the question if these authors have systematically discarded a large number of valid technical papers and older atmospheric CO2 determinations because they did not fit their hypothesis? Obviously they use only a few carefully selected values from the older literature, invariably choosing results that are consistent with the hypothesis of an induced rise of CO2 in air caused by the burning of fossil fuel.” Pre-industrial levels were 50 ppm higher than those used in the IPCC computer models. Models also incorrectly assume uniform atmospheric distribution and virtually no variability from year to year. Beck found, “Since 1812, the CO2 concentration in northern hemispheric air has fluctuated exhibiting three high level maxima around 1825, 1857 and 1942 the latter showing more than 400 ppm.” Here is a plot from Beck comparing 19th century readings with ice core and Mauna Loa data. Selections changed the slope of the trend from declining to increasing. As Jaworowski notes, “The notion of low pre-industrial CO2 atmospheric level, based on such poor knowledge, became a widely accepted Holy Grail of climate warming models. The modelers ignored the evidence from direct measurements of CO2 in atmospheric air indicating that in 19th century its average concentration was 335 ppmv.” Ice cores provide the historic record and samples from Mauna Loa provide the recent record. Both are drastically smoothed thus eliminating variability. This was done to tie in with the pre-industrial levels. Ernst Beck confirmed Jaworowski’s research in a September 2008 article in Energy and Environment and validated all the 19th century records. In a devastating conclusion Beck writes,“Modern greenhouse hypothesis is based on the work of G.S. Callendar and C.D. Keeling, following S. Arrhenius, as latterly www.earthstarmag.com Figure 2: Beck’s blended graph. Source: Energy and Environment, September 2008. APRIL / MAY 2010 EARTH STAR 33 , Ph.D. www.learnreiki.org Difference in variability of the 19th century measures, ice core records and Mauna Loa are apparent. Ice core records are subjected to a seventy-year smoothing average eliminating a great deal of information. For example, the Mauna Loa record covers fifty years (1958 2009), not enough for even a single point. Elimination of high readings prior to the smoothing makes the loss even greater. As with all known records the temperature changes before the CO2, here by approximately five years. Elimination of data occurs with the Mauna Loa readings, which can vary up to 600 ppm in the course of a day. Beck explains how Charles Keeling established the Mauna Loa readings by using the lowest readings of the afternoon. He ignored natural sources, a practice that continues. Beck presumes Keeling decided to avoid these low level natural sources by establishing the station at 4000 meters up the volcano. As Beck notes, “Mauna Loa does not represent the typical atmospheric CO2 on different global locations but is typical only for this volcano at a maritime location in about 4000 m altitude at that latitude.” (Beck, 2008, “50 Years of Continuous Measurement of CO2 on Mauna Loa” Energy and Environment, Vol 19, No.7.) A comparison of a stomata record with the ice core record for a 2000-year period illustrates the issue. Figure 4: (Below) Ice core CO2 levels compared to Stomata over 2000 years. Stomata data on the right show higher readings and variability than excessively smoothed ice core record on the left. The stomata record aligns with the 19th century measurements as Jaworowski and Beck assert. A Danish stomata record shows levels of 333 ppm 9400 years ago and 348 ppm 9600 years ago. Figure 3: (Above) CO2 and Temperature levels for 600 million years. Current level of 385 ppm on the right of the graph is the lowest in the entire record only equaled by a period between 315 and 270 million years ago (mya). Further evidence of the effects of statistical smoothing and the artificially low ice core readings are provided by measurements of stomata. A new form of treatment called neurotherapy (also known as neurofeedback) is similar to biofeedback but has a unique focus on controlling brain wave activity rather than skin temperature, heart rate, breathing and muscle tension. My interest was piqued when I read that neurotherapy now is used with a wide scope of health issues, including not only those listed above but also autism, chronic pain, posttraumatic stress disorder, depression and anxiety. I got in touch with medical psychologist and bioneurofeedback therapist Celeste De Bease, PhD, to find out how. P High-Tech Mind-Body Medicine According to Dr. De Bease, many neurological problems involve disordered brain waves. Neurofeedback helps patients learn to set them right. The brain produces brain waves at varying electrical frequencies measured in hertz (cycles per second). (Just to compare, I looked up the current for household electricity—it’s 60 Hz here in the US.) Brain wave electrical frequencies include... 36 EARTH STAR APRIL / MAY 2010 • Delta—1 to 3 Hz and the slowest of all, is mostly seen during sleep. • Theta—4 to 7 Hz, a state of deep relaxation that can bring bursts of creative insight. It occurs during daydreaming and advanced meditation. • Alpha—8 to 13 Hz, a pleasurable, relaxed state associated with being calm and lucid. it occurs in some forms of meditation and sometimes with dream sleep. • Beta—14 to 30 Hz, is the frequency produced during normal waking activities, when you are processing information for daily living, problem solving and the like. • High Beta—any Beta over 21 Hz, these waves show that the brain is in its racing mode associated with anxiety and tension. Many patients with neurological problems tend toward either under- or over-arousal of the brain. Neurofeedback teaches methods to gain control by using video display (like a video game) images that correspond to different brain waves. Working with the therapist, people can learn ways to produce faster or slower waves. Even children can do this. Mind Control? Dr. De Bease explained that people with ADD or depression, or who suffer from mental fog and lethargic thinkwww.earthstarmag.com ing in general, benefit from learning how to speed up their brain waves—those who need to slow them down to calm over-arousal include people with compulsions, autism, posttraumatic stress disorder, chronic-pain disorders, epilepsy and insomnia. Parkinson’s disease patients can benefit from slower brain waves that relax their nervous systems and contribute to better motor functioning. Neurofeedback technology is continuing to evolve, Dr. De Bease said. Where there used to be just a few approaches, therapists now have many wellresearched training protocols to work with, and their techniques become more customized as the science and training are refined. For instance, placement of electrodes varies depending on the issue being addressed—for people with ADD, Dr. De Bease told me that she places electrodes on the scalp directly above the frontal cortex, which controls the function of paying attention. Practical Advice The goal of neurotherapy is to recognize how it feels to operate in the desired brain wave activity range and to then learn how to get there at will. Effective training typically takes ten or more sessions, depending on the problem. Prices vary by area and may range from fifty dollars to more than one hundred dollars a session. Some health insurance plans cover neurofeedback for some conditions, but usually only after you get a diagnosis and prescription from your doctor. Dr. De Bease calls neurotherapy “a powerful technique,” but cautions that it is crucial to find a Biofeedback Certified Professional (BCP) who is welltrained specifically in this technique, especially in light of the fact that many who call themselves qualified have completed just a weekend training program. Look for a practitioner who is certified by the Biofeedback Certification Institute of America (http://www.bcia.org/). This means that, among other credentials, the practitioner has had twenty-five hours of www.earthstarmag.com practice mentored by a BCIA-approved practitioner and one hundred patient/client sessions reviewed and approved by BCIA. Neurofeedback can benefit healthy people, too. Dr. De Bease said she works primarily with medical conditions but knows many therapists who focus on performance enhancement, which includes training athletes, business professionals and even members of the military in the use of neurofeedback. Certainly this is a therapy worth looking into—it’s noninvasive and drug-free, not terribly expensive, and may help with many conditions. APRIL / MAY 2010 EARTH STAR 39 How Aging Humans Can Slow and Reverse Atherosclerosis By Richard Hathaway S 40 cientists long ago documented the ability of HDL (high-density lipoprotein) to remove cholesterol affixed to arterial walls and transport it to the liver for safe disposal. EARTH STAR This is why it is so important to maintain HDL levels above 50 mg/dL of blood and follow steps Life Extension® has outlined to ensure optimal reverse cholesterol transport of lipids away from the arterial wall. HDL does more than just APRIL / MAY 2010 cleanse arterial walls of plaque. It also protects LDL against oxidation, while inhibiting chronic inflammation, vascular adhesion molecules, and platelet activation—factors that can all lead to atherosclerosis. For HDL to perform its vital functions, an enzyme called paraoxonase-1 (PON-1) is attached to its surface. As humans age, PON-1 levels markedly decline, thereby reducing the ability of HDL to protect against heart attack and stroke. This phenomenon helps explain the onset of accelerated atherosclerosis; where within a period of only a few years, an aging person’s healthy arteries rapidly occlude with plaque. The age-related reduction in PON-1 may also explain studies showing that statin drugs lose their benefit in certain aging populations, since the effects of statins are no longer sufficient to protect against the multiple factors involved in the development of atherosclerosis in the elderly. Lipid peroxidation is a free radical reaction that severely damages cell membranes and is implicated in a host of degenerative diseases. PON-1 blocks destructive lipid peroxidation reactions, making it a crucial enzyme for aging humans to maintain. PON-1 is anchored to the surface of HDL and is emerging as a formidable defense against atherosclerosis, diabetes, stroke, arthritis, and certain forms of cancer. Pharmaceutical companies would pay a king’s ransom for a drug that elevates PON-1 levels in the body. Fortunately, scientists have discovered low-cost natural methods to elevate PON-1 and unleash its full antioxidant and anti-inflammatory power. This article uncovers research substantiating the anti-aging effects of PON-1—and how nutrients that most Life Extension members already take boost PON1 activity for maximum benefit. Reduce Your Cardiac Risk Factors Atherosclerosis is a leading cause of death in the Western world.8 A growing body of clinical evidence suggests that PON-1 (paraoxonase-1) may very well serve as one of the body’s primary defenses against it. PON-1 is an enzyme produced in the liver and released into the blood, where it attaches exclusively to the HDL molecule.9 As an enzymatic engine that supports HDL’s beneficial action, PON-1 has been shown to inhibit the accumulation of lipoperoxides in LDL cholesterol—the process that results in oxidized LDL’s accumulation on arterial walls, leading to deadly hardening of the arteries. losesits ability to prevent LDL oxidation over time—and there is evidence that an age-related drop in serum PON-1 levels may be part of the reason. By preserving HDL’s integrity, activity, and efficacy, PON-1 helps HDL protect arterial health. PON-1 selectively breaks down oxidized fats, acting as a “cleanup” system to prevent oxidized molecules from triggering inflammatory cells in the blood (one of the mechanisms of action behind HDL’s heart-protective benefit). Increases in PON-1 activity after red wine consumption provided some of the first clues to why red wine, and specifically its active component, resveratrol, are protective against cardiovascular diseases. In mice genetically engineered to lack the PON-1 gene, scientists have found a dramatic increase in oxidative stress on macrophages, immune cells that can become laden with oxidized lipids and contribute to a pro-atherogenic cascade of inflammation in vessel walls. Similarly, humans with low PON-1 levels are at substantially increased risk for cardiovascular events compared with those who have normal levels. Healthy humans endowed with the most active genetic expression of PON-1 also display enhanced protective responses to natural antioxidants. New methods of measuring PON-1 activity in the blood show that it is correlated to coronary artery disease risk, regardless of lipid profiles or lipid-lowering therapy. PON-1 is more closely related to cardiovascular risk in individuals already at high risk for atherosclerosis. People with chronic kidney disease on hemodialysis, for example, have 30% less PON-1 activity than normal, which produces a startling 127% decrease in their HDL’s antioxidant function.20 PON-1 levels, in fact, are an accurate predictor of cardiovascular mortality in kidney hemodialysis patients. Lower than average PON-1 levels were not only predictive of cardiovascular mortality, but also of all-cause mortality. In addition to its ability to protect HDL against oxidation, PON-1 has also been shown to hydrolyze (break apart) homocysteine thiolactones, which are responsible for damage to blood vessels. So PON-1 on its own is a blood vessel protector. Evidence from animal research on PON-1 uniformly shows that PON-1 is protective against atherosclerosis. However, it has not been possible to definitively determine if decreased PON-1 activity is the cause of cardiovascular events, or a reflection of the events themselves. Prospective studies are needed to make this determination. Until now, there has been only one such study, and it clearly showed that low PON-1 in the blood was an independent risk factor for coronary events in men with pre-existing coronary artery disease. However, the increasingly persuasive substantiation APRIL / MAY 2010 EARTH STAR 41 of the relationship between PON-1 and a broad spectrum of cardiac risk factors has prompted researchers to deem this enzyme “a player in cardiovascular medicine” and “an important target for future pharmacological agents aimed at decreasing cardiovascular risk.” A Potent Weapon Against Diseases of Aging With the boom in scientific interest in PON-1 over the past two decades, the documented range of its diseasefighting modes of operation in the body continues to broaden. As leading researcher Janice E. Chambers of Mississippi State University puts it, PON-1 has emerged as a “multitasking protein.” A growing roster of chronic, age-related conditions has been associated with dangerously low PON-1 levels. They also happen to be associated with significantly elevated levels of lipid peroxidation. This in turn increases the amount of PON-1 the aging body needs to compensate for the onslaught of oxidative damage to healthy cells. To take one example, researchers have recently discovered that overweight individuals and those suffering from metabolic syndrome display a demonstrable decrease in PON-1 activity, rendering them still more vulnerable to cardiovascular disease. PON-1 plays a number of essential roles in preventing diabetes and its consequences, particularly in managing the postprandial (aftermeal) spikes in blood sugar that produce deadly advanced glycation end products (AGEs). When blood sugar levels rise, liver production of PON-1 increases as well, possibly to compensate for the oxidative stress induced by glucose. This appears to be the reason why PON-1 levels increase following a meal in non-diabetic people, preventing oxidation levels in healthy tissue from rising. But in diabetics and people with impaired glucose tolerance (pre-diabetics), oxidation products rise rapidly after eating. Diabetics actually have a significant decrease in postprandial PON-1 concentrations, further boosting their risk for cardiovascular disease. Helicobacter pylori—a bacterium closely associated with ulcers and cancer of the stomach—also suffer from elevated oxidative stress, lower PON-1 levels, and increased risk of atherosclerosis. People with high homocysteine may have dysfunctional HDL molecules 42 EARTH STAR APRIL / MAY 2010 characterized by reduced PON-1 activity, which appears to account in part for their higher cardiovascular risk. Even those with seemingly unrelated diseases of aging—including osteoarthritis and age-related macular degeneration (AMD)—exhibit diminished PON-1 activity. High LDL and low HDL cholesterol levels commonly occur in individuals with AMD, further increasing susceptibility to lipid peroxidation and cardiovascular disease. How to Boost Your PON-1 Levels The most recent research indicates that pomegranate and its extracts can significantly elevate levels of PON-1 activity in the body. Pomegranate does this through a number of distinct biomolecular pathways that include combating inflammation and LDL adhesion and favorably modulating gene expression. Pomegranate extracts reduce oxidation and inflammation largely through their effect on PON-1 activity, intervening at each step in the development of atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis begins with oxidation of LDL cholesterol. Damaged LDL “clumps” together and accumulates in specialized immune system cells called foam cells. The foam cells invade blood vessel walls, triggering inflammatory responses and the formation of early atherosclerotic plaque. Inflamed plaque attracts clotforming platelets, leading ultimately to a narrowing of blood vessels that restricts blood flow. When inflamed plaques rupture—or clots form that block blood flow entirely—tissue dies, producing a heart attack or stroke, depending on location. A dedicated group of Israeli researchers led the way in detailing how pomegranate disrupts atherosclerosis formation at each of these developmental phases—and the crucial role PON-1 plays in this process. They began with a landmark study in 2000 that focused on pomegranate’s antioxidant properties. The team started with a group of healthy male volunteers, along with laboratory mice genetically engineered to develop atherosclerosis. When human subjects consumed pomegranate juice for 2 weeks, the researchers found dramatic reductions in LDL “clumping” and retention in vessels, accompanied by a 20% www.earthstarmag.com increase in PON-1 activity. In the atherosclerosis-prone mice, a 90% reduction in oxidation of LDL cholesterol was seen. Supplemented mice also developed atherosclerotic lesions 44% smaller than unsupplemented controls, an effect attributed to reduction in the number of inflammatory foam cells. The Israeli researchers went on to show that concentrated pomegranate extract and pomegranate juice induced profoundly protective effects—even in mice with advanced atherosclerosis. Pomegranate not only reduced accumulation of oxidized fat in macrophages within cells—it reversed it, boosting the outflow of cholesterol by 39%! In other words, pomegranate may be able to interrupt and even reverse atherosclerosis, not just prevent it. After the Israeli group’s landmark discoveries, additional supportive evidence emerged. The scientists found that pomegranate polyphenols accumulated inside of the arterial macrophages (immune cells) that absorb LDL cholesterol, preventing them from oxidizing their LDL burden and keeping them from turning into dangerous foam cells. They also observed that pomegranate-induced elevation in PON-1 activity stimulated the breakdown of existing oxidized LDL cholesterol—even in atherosclerotic plaques that have already formed. Additional findings of interest were evinced in patients with carotid artery stenosis, a narrowing of the main blood vessels supplying the brain. These individuals are at very high risk for stroke. After one year, patients in this study given pomegranate experienced an 83% increase in PON-1 levels and their oxidized LDL levels consequently fell by a remarkable 90%. The placebo group worsened by 9% whereas carotid artery narrowing was reversed by 30% in the pomegranate supplemented patients. This translates to a significant increase in blood flow to the brain in those using pomegranate. Both groups continued taking their conventional medications. PON-1’s capacity to powerfully inhibit lipid peroxidation in this pomegranate study cohort appears to have resulted in substantial reduction in stroke risk for patients with atherosclerosis. Other benefits were seen as well: serum levels of antibodies directed against oxidized LDL (important contributors to the inflammatory component of atherosclerosis) fell by 19%, while total plasma antioxidant status rose by an astounding 130%. Systolic blood pressure was also reduced by 12% in sup- www.earthstarmag.com plemented patients over the course of a year. Evidence has also come to light for PON-1’s role in diabetes management through pomegranate consumption. When patients with type 2 diabetes were compared to healthy controls, their PON-1 levels were found to be depressed by 23%. When these same patients were given pomegranate juice (50 mL/day for 3 months), their serum PON-1 activity rose by 24%, helping restore it to healthy levels. In 2007, researchers discovered pomegranate polyphenols upregulated genes for PON-2 in LDL-scavenging macrophages. PON-2 is a molecule closely related to PON-1 that exerts similarly beneficial effects. The resulting increase in production of PON-2 directly improved these cells’ oxidative status. Upregulation of PON-1 genes has also been documented in liver cells exposed to pomegranate polyphenols—a critical benefit, since liver cells are responsible for PON-1 production. In the past few years researchers have also demonstrated that pomegranate stabilizes PON-1’s molecular bond with beneficial HDL. PON-1 molecules can degrade over time, detaching from the “mother” HDL molecule. Pomegranate extracts have been shown to strengthen and support the molecular bond between PON-1 and HDL complexes—thereby protecting HDL from oxidative decay. Other PON-1 Enhancers Strong evidence has recently emerged for several compounds with known cardioprotective effects that may also favorably increase your PON-1 levels. Moderate consumption of wine, beer, and spirits is associated with an increase in PON-1 activity. Red wine polyphenols increase PON-1 activity and reduce LDL oxidation. S p e c i f i c a l l y, resveratrol, the best-known of the red wine polyphe- APRIL / MAY 2010 EARTH STAR 43 nols, exerts powerful control over the PON-1 gene, increasing PON-1 expression in human liver cells and protecting against atherosclerosis in animal models. (The liver is where PON1 is produced in the body.) Quercetin, another polyphenol found in red wine and many other plant sources, also upregulates PON-1 gene expression, protecting against LDL oxidation. Quercetin also possesses numerous mechanisms pomegranate,it helps stabilize and preserve PON-1 activity against oxidative stress. Summary Lipid peroxidation—free radical damage to healthy cell membranes—is a primary aging factor implicated in the onset of numerous degenerative diseases. PON-1 (paraoxonase-1) is an under-recognized enzyme attached to beneficial HDL that has been shown to block lipid peroxidation. Recent research suggests that PON-1 may serve as a formidable defense against numerous diseases of aging, including heart disease, metabolic syndrome, arthritis, and certain cancers. PON-1 levels decrease with advancing age, contributing to a decline in the cardioprotective effect of HDL. Pomegranate has been shown to elevate PON-1 activity and support its activity in the body. It has been shown to upregulate the gene that governs PON-1 production, increasing its output in liver cells and elevating its concentration in the blood. Pomegranate extracts protect and sustain PON-1 activity at the molecular level, preventing its degradation, and maintaining its bond within the HDL molecular complex. Emerging evidence suggests that resveratrol and quercetin may exert similar effects on PON-1 levels and activity Reprinted with permission from Life Extension Magazine, www.lef.org. WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: SLOWING AND REVERSING ATHEROSCLEROSIS • Lipid peroxidation—the continuous onslaught of free radical damage to cell membranes—is a primary aging factor implicated in a host of degenerative diseases. • A little-known enzyme called PON-1 has drawn increasing scientific interest because of its demonstrated ability to block lipid peroxidation. • Individuals suffering from obesity, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, elevated homocysteine, and other inflammatory conditions have been shown to have low PON-1 levels. • • A correlation has been demonstrated between PON-1 levels and cardiovascular disease risk. • This effect is achieved through upregulation of PON-1 genes, stabilization of PON-1 levels, and protection from oxidative damage. • Strong scientific evidence points to pomegranate’s PON-1-boosting effects as a key reason for its cardioprotective effect. • Resveratrol and quercetin are also emerging as potential PON-1 boosters. 44 Pomegranate and its extracts have been shown to powerfully increase PON-1 levels and activity in the blood. The bedroom should be a place for relaxation and restoration, but many mattresses are made and treated with toxins that could outgas. W outgases volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the air and can cause respiratory problems, irritate skin and weaken and damage the immune and nervous systems. The adhesives used to hold mattresses together also contain formaldehyde and have been linked to asthma, allergies and even cancer. Healthy Mattresses In 2007, the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) began requiring all mattresses sold in the United States to resist open flames. Although the regulation was enacted with safety in mind, the chemicals used to make products flame retardant are dangerous. Manufacturers phased out a highly toxic flame retardant, polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE), in 2004, but the alternatives aren’t much better. Some of the most common flame retardants include boric acid, antimony (which could damage the heart and liver), melamine (used in pesticides) and formaldehyde. These chemicals can accumulate in our bodies over time and can leach out in landfills. Because mattress companies aren’t legally required to disclose their products’ chemical makeup, finding a healthy mattress requires some sleuthing. Mattress cores are typically made of either springs or polyurethane foam. If you prefer a foam core, opt for a mattress that uses natural latex, a renewable source Since the 1960s, most mattresses—and many mattressrelated products such as memory foam—have been made from polyurethane, a petroleum product. In addition to being nonbiodegradable, new polyurethane foam 48 EARTH STAR APRIL / MAY 2010 www.earthstarmag.com derived from rubber trees. The cell structure of latex allows air to pass through it easily, meaning moisture won’t accumulate while you sleep and you’ll stay cool, dry and comfortable at night. Latex is also naturally antibacterial, so it’s a good choice for people with allergies. Organic cotton and wool are also good natural alternatives to polyurethane foam. Sleeping on a mattress wrapped in organic cotton or wool ensures you won’t breathe in chemicals or pesticides while you sleep. Air flows easily through wool and cotton, wicking away moisture and discouraging dust mites from settling in. Pillow Talk Many pillows are made out of polyurethane foam, so they release VOCs. Synthetic fibers also trap moisture and create a haven for dust mites. Many of the same materials used in natural mattresses work well in pillows. Wool’s moisture-resistant qualities make it a good pillow filling. H y p o a l l e rg e n i c organic cotton is a good choice for people with allergies. Natural latex is another healthy pillow material that conforms to the body and holds its shape over time, providing continued support for your neck and head. Buckwheat is another eco-friendly pillow filling alternative. Buckwheat hulls form to the shape of your head. Manufacturers say that, unlike other fillings such as foam and feathers, buckwheat hulls don’t compress over time so a buckwheat pillow will keep its shape. The hulls’ shape also allows air to pass through freely, keeping dust mites and pollen from getting trapped. according to the Organic Trade Association’s 2007 Manufacturer Survey. Organic cotton is grown without synthetic fertilizers or pesticides and federal regulations prohibit the use of genetically modified seed in cotton labeled organic by the FDA. Bamboo Sheets Bamboo sheets are popular thanks to their silky texture and “breathability.” Rapidly renewable bamboo grows without pesticides. Though environmental issues exist— bamboo farms are replacing old-growth forests in parts of the world; converting bamboo stalks to fiber is energy-intensive; and the Federal Trade Commission recently charged several companies with selling rayon labeled as bamboo—it is still a better option than synthetic fibers, which are often made with toxic chemicals, or energy- and pesticide-intensive conventional cotton. Like bamboo, hemp requires few resources or pesticides to grow, making it a good fiber for sheets. Hemp sheets are stronger and more durable than cotton and require less processing to produce. Between the Sheets Nontoxic and eco-friendly sheets are available in a variety of materials and colors, and from mainstream retailers such as Target and Bed, Bath & Beyond. Organic cotton is the most popular material for eco-friendly sheets. In 2006, organic fiber linens and clothing sales in the U.S. grew by twenty-six percent from the previous year, to reach two hundred-and-three million dollars, www.earthstarmag.com APRIL / MAY 2010 EARTH STAR 49 MYSTICAL STONES Excerpted from The Book of Stones, Stones by Robert Simmons and Naisha Ahsian MUSCOVITE Keyword: Mental stimulation, inspiration, problem solving, attunement to the future, ESP, moderation of overly rapid spiritual awakening Element: Wind Chakras: Third Eye (6th), Crown (7th) uscovite is a potassium aluminum silicate mineral with a hardness of 2.5 to 4. Its crystal system is monoclinic. It forms most frequently in tabular, pseudohexagonal crystals but can also occur in lamellar and cryptocrystalline habits. Its primary colors are white, gray and colorless, but it can sometimes exhibit tinges of red, violet, yellow, green or brown. It forms in metamorphic rocks such as gneiss and schist, as well as igneous rocks like granite. Mica schist sometimes contains high concentrations of Muscovite. Fuchsite is a green, chromiumbearing type of Muscovite. Muscovite is a stone of highly positive energies. It affects the mind centers and mental processes more than the emotions or physical body. Muscovite stimulates the rational mind; promoting clear and quick thinking, effective problem-solving and the synthesis of new ideas from old information. It is a stone of novelty, teaching one to try on unfamiliar frames of reference. It assists one in letting go of the habit of thinking things must be seen as ‘either/or.’ It allows one to move beyond strict logic and into the meta-logic of ‘both/and.’ Muscovite stimulates the higher capacities of the brain, leading one to embrace paradox, holding the tension of opposites within the mind without getting a brain cramp. M 50 EARTH STAR APRIL / MAY 2010 With its vibration of high mental stimulation, Muscovite is excellent for students, teachers, writers, inventors, scientists, mathematicians, business owners, consultants, political office holders and others who wish to engage the full capacities of the mind. It is a stone of inspiration, fostering the creation of new neural pathways and increasing the frequency of ‘Aha!’ moments. As one works with this stone, one often feels increased in confidence in one's ability to tackle challenging projects or problems. Such confidence reduces mental and psychological stress, further enhancing one's powers of mind through the relaxation of tension. Muscovite assists one in attuning to the time stream of the future. It does this by allow-ing one’s mental apparatus to rest comfortably in the state of indeterminacy. Most of us are trained to always try to pin down the facts and ‘get a han- dle’ on reality. Along with that, we are educated to believe that the future will tend to resemble the past. This self-fulfilling prophecy keeps us chained to dreary predictability and kills the imagination. Muscovite’s energies encourage one to turn to the future with hopeful expectancy and without any preconceived notions. This frees the Universe to present us with new experiences and novel answers to life’s questions-or perhaps novel questions with no answers at all! Muscovite stimulates the sixth and seventh chakras, activating the major mind centers. In addition to conventional mental processing, Muscovite supports the functions of intuition, telepathy, clairvoyance and other forms of ESP. It makes one receptive to information and suggestions from one’s spirit guides. It assists one in embracing ‘bigger thoughts,’ allowing one to see the links between such diverse disciplines as art, music, philosophy and mathematics. Fuchsite, the green variety of Muscovite, brings in the connection to the heart chakra, linking the intellect of the mind with the intelligence of the heart. Because of this, Fuchsite is the highest form of Muscovite, and work with this stone allows one to use the gifts of the mind, guided by the heart’s wisdom. Muscovite harmonizes with Lepidolite for spiritual upliftment and release of stress. Moldavite can take Muscovite's mental energies to a higher level. For artists and others wishing for visions and inspirations, Phenacite and Herkimer ‘Diamonds’ are ideal allies. The ancients have historically shown that the proper use of external objects made from precious metals such as gold, silver, copper, and other precious metals, using the proper shapes, can create a sensational response by impulse, from the sea of natural forces that surrounds us. Almost everyone in the world, at some time or another can be found wearing some form of jewelry, whether it be something fashionable, on Fifth Avenue in New York, or someone living in the wild, fashioning complementary items, from local materials such as stone, minerals, wood or bone. What first comes to mind to one who investigates this is the timeless amulet. The term itself is derived from the Latin word amuletum or an earlier term amoletum which means, “means of defense”. Pliny, a Roman naturalist, describes three types of amulets: those which offer protection against trouble and adversity; those which provided medical or prophylactic W 52 EARTH STAR APRIL / MAY 2010 treatment; and substances used in medicine. The ancient cultures of the Egyptians, Assyrians, Babylonians, Hebrews and Arabs placed great importance on the use of amulets. The Egyptians were fanatical, using them for many discrete purposes. The frog protected fertility; the ankhs symbolize everlasting life and regeneration; the udjat or eye, was for good health, comfort, and protection against evil; the scarab beetle represented resurrection after death and protection against evil magic. One of the most notable amulets of ancient Egypt is the Eye Of Horus. Cylinder seals were used as amulets by the Assyrians and Babylonians. Within them were embedded precious and semi precious stones; each stone supposedly possessed its own unique magical powers. There were also various animal shaped amulets, such as, the ram for virility, and the bull for virility and strength. The Arabs also had amulets, in which pieces of paper were written prayers, spells or magical names. In Africa, the natives were discovered having amulets to which the Western explorers and missionaries called fetishes. The fetish symbolize protection for the natives. www.earthstarmag.com Talismans are frequently confused with amulets. Talismans are objects which can passively protect the owner from evil and harm. Usually the solitary function of talismans is to make possible power transformations. Talismans were thought to possess magical or supernatural powers of their own, which were then transmitted to their owners. One of the most famous talismans was the elusive “Philosopher’s Stone”, which alchemists sought to transform base metals into silver and gold. Today because science has advanced so far, we have come to understand that anytime mass, such as the mass of an object, interrupts space, depending on the shape of the object, it creates an energy field, and and any time an energy field is created, time becomes a vital component therefore defining frequency. If we look at the human body for example, we see that the red blood cell, hemoglobin is made up of a chain of four octahedral iron atoms, called hemes. In this case nature has chosen the use of a pyramid shape, with a reference plane of one pyramid right side up, and one pyramid upside down. The energy created from this combination is repeated four times, which in medical terms, are expressed as two alpha, and to beta chains, which have the unique ability to transmit vital air and prana into the body, and remove carbon dioxide, which then is transmitted to nature as a source of energy for plants. Again at the base of the brain we find a section called the “Pons Varolii” which is a pyramid shaped section that regulates among other things, the arterial supplies of the body, which in turn control sleep, respiration, swallowing, bladder control, hearing, equalibrium, taste, eye movement, facial expression (emotion) and posture ( chi flow). All of these vital shapes within the body contain their own vital resonant frequencies. It is based upon this and other factors that science has delivered a host of new information since the olden times. My work started back in the early 1960’s when I began to study shape energy research, crystal gem and filter technology, Maser (microwave amplification by stimulated emission of radiation) technology, laser (light application by stimulated emission of radiation) technol- www.earthstarmag.com ogy, homeopathic and allopathic medical sciences, Tibetan acupuncture, and its relationship to Plieadian science, NASA Cassegrain technology, and orgone surface plating, which led to the receptor package itself. After I had made my own studies in the these various fields, and with what I have learned, in basic and quantum physics, medicine, and our work at NASA in shape energy, it was possible to create a new type of device, that scientifically could actually do and perform the tasks of the ancient amulets and talismans. Prior to my work, Doctor Pat Flanagan had created a mantra energy producing device, which he had produced on a small printed circuit board, and placed on a necklace. Kirlian photography and other methods at the time, noted that it had definitely an effect on the human biological systems. Adding Doctor Flanagan’s ideas to my own, the amazing Pyradyne Nuclear Receptor concept came into being. However it took a few more years, to be able to produce the first prototypes, because of the unusual angles, requiring pyramids to be upside down and right side up, arranged in the Fibonacci series, and then imprinted on a concave disk. The purpose of the disc was to be able to posture pyramid shapes in both the right side up and upside down positions, therefore generating a scalar wave that had the ida and pingala (male and female) energy balance. This was necessary as to balance these energies, in which case for centuries, the male energy has been predominant over the female energy on this planet, causing a spiritual imbalance in both men and women. These imbalances, through the centuries are transmitted into a DNA pattern, that leads people to be prone to various disease conditions. This then puts a stress on the immune system, and because the immune system, is our source of consciousness, the consciousness growth factor becomes severely inhibited, clearly demonstrated by the chaotic growth of mankind over the last 5000 years. The Fibonacci series and sequence is named after Leonardo of Pisa, who is known as Fibonacci. By definition, the first to Fibonacci numbers are zero and one, APRIL / MAY 2010 EARTH STAR 53 device will deliver to the cellular structure in the body. The cellular frequencies of the body, but we were concerned with were the ones that were in the visual spectrum, which is violent through red or 400 to 700 Å the units. Once the frequency was defined, it passed through the rear of the device, which contains a microwave trap, often used in the high-frequency electronics and telecommunications industry to purify and filter electronic signals, also known as a Janin mantra. and each remaining number is the sum of the previous two. For example one plus one equals two, 2+ one equals three, and 3+2 equals five. When you plot this out on a chart or graph, you come up with the geometric golden spiral, which in turn is the natural order of growth in nature. For example looking at a pine cone, in one ring there could be four petals, the next ring five, and therefore the following ring would be nine. This then defines the frequency of the order of growth, which also applies to cellular growth. The next problem we had to overcome was the focal length. Using what is called a Cassegrain design we were able to shorten the focal length of the dish, and redirect the energy back through the center of the disc onto the human aura. Mounted above the dish itself, is a small gemstone that determines the frequency that the 54 EARTH STAR APRIL / MAY 2010 When looking at the overall operation, once the correct frequency is determined to balance a body condition, then the appropriate filter, in this case gemstone, is fitted into the bridge of the Nuclear Receptor. The energy is then converted to scalar waves, which transmit radionically into the auric frequencies of the body. The aura itself is created by the arrival of hormones into the receptor sites of the brain, and these receptor sites through their synaptic actions, create an electromagnetic field within the electrolytes in the brain itself. When the electrolytes are low, the body is subjected to free radical damage, which can lead into serious cellular failures, and when these failures reach pathogenic proportions, the body breaks down and is then subject to many viral and bacterial infections. The Nuclear Receptor has, as one of its actions, the ability to produce electrical pre-cursation, which is a precursor to the proper composition and structure of the cells, organs and other parts of the body. Agonists to this pre-cursing factor often include, use of cellular phones, bad air, positive ions, fossil fuel pollution, electronic and electromagnetic warfare, stress, full moon (during the full moon the surface tension of the body changes, interfering with proper hormonal function) microwave and nuclear radiation (our water is fifteen percent more radioactive than it was a century ago) and a variety of other factors, not often thought of until a disease like condition appears. One of the most common noticeable results of nuclear water pollution is prostate cancer in men, and breast cancer in women. If a woman is preg- www.earthstarmag.com states of the carbon atom, the building block of all human chemistry. The carbon atom in its basic form is a perfect octahedron. No wonder women suffer such a high incidence of breast cancer. All matter is composed of atoms and each atom possesses polarity and consciousness. As we evolve and become more intelligent and aware of ourselves and our surroundings, the cells within our bodies vibrate in higher rates of vibration. This allows us as individuals to become more sensitive to each other in our surroundings, our children more progressive and our physical lifespans longer. With these new and improved electronic and chemical stresses being placed daily upon the human body, a shortening of the lifespan, and a large amount of birth defects are introduced into our societies worldwide. There are super forces (termed in physics, strong and weak nuclear force), deep within the heart of the atom which direct quantum biological entanglement, i.e. intelligence, to the 12 billion nuclear acids within the center of ourselves, DNA. Just before birth, the DNA has forty-six base pairs per turn to direct a full complement of instructions to reproduce cells with a high vitality level. By the time you are fifty-five years old, there are only six base pairs per turn, and the aging process is well upon on its way. The only way to correct this process is not to just work with the bodily biological and chemical requirements, but to go to the electrical precursation aspect, which direct’s the body’s electrical currents into proper cellular and organelle reproduction. When this happens the immune system begins to respond, thereby allowing the individual to experience a growing consciousness in a higher sense of well-being. This has given birth to a new science called quantum biology wherein the light frequencies of the body are properly distributed and managed. The end result is a properly functioning DNA system that produces a balanced hormonal product, which is stored in one of the seven endocrine glands. Our nutritional needs are such that our bodies require foods and vitamins that have a tendency to rotate or polarize rotational photonic light spin to the left (levorotatory). This in turn produces enantiomers which are stereoisomers or mirror images which rotate polarized light in equal amounts but opposite directions. However due to the increased microwave and satellite harassment techniques being used by various governments, under the aegis of the New World Order, them (see Doctor Bell’s new book, The inside Track), the gradual poisoning of all foods, the mind altering drugs introduced by big Pharma, atmospheric and radiation poisoning, the body no longer can produce the stereoisomer balanced image. In its stead, the body produces what is called a Chiral molecule which causes a serious unbalance to one of the four asymmetric www.earthstarmag.com APRIL / MAY 2010 EARTH STAR 55 Remember a hormone is the first piece of biochemistry that possesses consciousness, i.e. testosterone and estrogen related to sex and sex drive, corticosteroids relate to energy, and serotonin, melatonin relate to spiritual and physical well-being. Although The Amazing Nuclear Receptor has been around for two decades, it has been in a constant state of upgrade and development. Light is basically composed of seven different colors, ranging from violet to red. Each individual is weak in one of the seven colors. By a simple method of muscle testing, or kinesiology, or even using one’s pendulum, we can determine what color the biological structure is weak in. This then determines the quantum filter gemstone color that would be required in the bridge of the Receptor. Because the body, in it’s healthy state, reproduces cells at the rate of ninety million per second, different cell groups began to correct the offset created by the above mentioned stresses. The first group of cells to respond are the red blood cells which reproduce in their entirety with in ninety days. This continues on with the endocrine system reproducing itself within a year, and the bone or skeletal structure within seven years. When a person begins to utilize these quantum biological methods, gradually his or her color requirements will change. The first change usually occurs sometime within the first year. When utilizing a receptor made from one of the various precious metals, silver, gold, or platinum, the gemstone is merely switched for one of the next higher order. In addition to the various basic metals, often times combinations are required, such as a silver Receptor with a gold bridge, or a gold Receptor with a platinum bridge. When looking at one’s budget, the Silver Receptor is that a good basic price start point. If someone wants the gold look, we often plate the Silver Receptor in 24 karat gold. The chain length is between 27 and 30 inches, as this is one of the wavelengths of DNA occurring between 375 and 425 MHz. As of this year, we have introduced another progression in the Nuclear Receptor, called the Professional Series. Here we have developed the bridge, by understanding 56 EARTH STAR APRIL / MAY 2010 more about shape energy, which has allowed the Receptor to not only work on scalar and radionic levels, but also quantum levels, wherein packets of photons are regulated more synergistically, with the color of the gemstone used on the bridges. Because of the way that the Nuclear Receptor works, it has a tendency to move radiation poisoning from the body. This is especially important if you’re using any form of cell phone. It has long been shown that microwave transmissions from a cell phone, produce cancerous tumors, usually near areas of the head where the cell phone is normally positioned. When this happens, the wearer will notice a heaviness when they place the Receptor on their body. To negate this effect and clean the Receptor, placing it in cold running water from a bathroom or kitchen tap will relieve this condition. Included with each Receptor is a 41-page informational manual. For more detailed information, refer to a earlier book I wrote called, Rays Of Truth, Crystals of Light. Another area that we has produced incredibly successful results with, are animals. Dogs and cats age rather fast comparison to the human aging process, and when one loses a precious pet the feeling is that one has lost a family member. When you discover a weakened condition in a pet, visualization of a color while in the presence of the pet, and the resultant feeling or feedback received, is usually an indication of the color of the gemstone that the animal will benefit from. Parrots and horses also respond quite well with the use of the Nuclear Receptor. You will be pleasantly surprised to your pet’s reaction when you place one in their presence! The economy is tanking, the currency is being abandoned by other nations, health care remains a disastrous failure, unemployment is atrociously high, prisons are filled to capacity, public education is failing yet another generation of children, and the population seems to be getting more diseased with each generation. E The question, though, is why? Why is our population so diseased? Why is unemployment so high? Why can’t our kids learn well in school? Why is America losing its leadership position in the world? Why are so many jobs being offshored to other countries? What if there were a single underlying reason that answered all these questions? As you may have guessed, there is: Nutrition. Poor nutrition destroys any nation. Good nutrition saves it. www.earthstarmag.com And in this special report, you’ll learn why nutrition plays such a powerful role in the rise or fall of any nation. It’s also a warning message for America: If we don’t make immediate, radical changes in the available food supply—and the marketing of foods to consumers—we won’t survive much longer as a nation. America will fall, brought down by the inevitable consequences of a nutritionally deficient, chronically diseased population. But to understand why this is the case, you first have to see why food has such a powerful impact on everything that matters in society: Health, happiness, employment, productivity, education and even freedom. To explain all that, let’s start with a lesson on poor nutrition. Next: The consequences of poor nutrition... What’s a bad diet? You are what you eat. It’s a saying as old as written history. Throughout every culture, people have known this simple truth since the dawn of Man (and Woman). But before we can even talk about the consequences of “bad” food choices for a APRIL / MAY 2010 EARTH STAR 57 nation, we have to engage in some honest talk about what “bad” foods really are. It’s a sobering discussion, too, because most people follow atrociously bad diets... Including many people who think they eat a fairly healthy diet. Perhaps 90 percent of the U.S. population eats a “bad” diet right now. The official government definition of a bad diet is nonexistent. The USDA wants Americans to eat more of everything: More dairy, more meat, more grains, and even more sugar. That’s because these are the industries served by the USDA. In their minds, “poor nutrition” just means people aren’t eating enough dairy, meat, grains and sugar. The USDA remains stuck in the mindset of the 1930’s when people were literally starving from a lack of calories. So their policy incessantly remains “Eat More!” But Americans don’t need to eat more. They need to eat less. A lot less. And especially less of the highly toxic, disease-promoting foods described below. Here are the characteristics of a bad diet: • Consists of a large quantity of animal products. As I mentioned, perhaps ninety percent of the U.S. population currently eats a diet that’s largely consistent with the above description. As you’ll soon see, this is destroying our nation. Next: The consequences of a bad diet... Junk food and consequences The diet previously described is a diet of death that delivers physical and mental impairment. Here’s an accounting of some of the major consequences of pursuing such a diet: Personal Health: This diet causes rapid aging and the aggressive development of degenerative disease: Cancer, heart disease, diabetes, obesity, Alzheimer’s disease, etc. The population also remains highly susceptible to infectious disease. Health Care Costs: In a nation that follows a bad diet, health care costs spiral out of control, eventually consuming a quarter (or more) of the GDP, driving the nation into bankruptcy. • Primarily consists of dead foods (cooked, microwaved, etc.) • Primarily consists of processed foods (milled, bleached, etc.) • Lacks large quantities of fresh, living fruits and vegetables. • Avoids adequate water hydration (and focuses on manufactured beverages). • Very high in processed sugars and processed carbohydrates. • Contains genetically-modified foods such as corn, soy or sugar from GM sugar beets. • Includes a large amount of processed, pasteurized dairy products such as cow’s milk. • Is made with hundreds of different chemical food additives from MSG and aspartame to chemical preservatives. • Is packaged in toxic food containers, including plastics and epoxy resins that contaminate the food with BPA. • Primarily consists of conventionally-grown, pesticide-contaminated foods. • Contains a large quantity of unhealthy oils such as corn oil, soy oil or partially-hydrogenated oils. • Consists of a large number of fried foods or foods cooked at very high temperatures that destroy nutrients while creating carcinogenic compounds. • Is made with many modified, unnatural ingredients such hydrogenated oils, refined sugar (which removes the minerals), homogenized milk fats, and so on. 58 EARTH STAR APRIL / MAY 2010 Education: Growing up on this bad diet, children suffer severe cognitive impairment and are unable to learn in school. In time, academic achievement of the nation falls sharply, and the great “dumbing down” of the population accelerates. Employment & Economy: A sick, diseased population is very expensive to maintain on the payrolls of Corporate America. Poisoned by processed food diets, workers suffer from repeated sick days and poor cognitive performance at work (inability to focus, failure to learn, failure to create new ideas, etc.), all of which make the workforce increasingly expensive for corporations to maintain. Not surprisingly, this causes yet a further shift of jobs to other nations where workers are more productive, healthier and less expensive. Violent Crime: With their brains fueled by junk foods (and with failed education giving them few options for earning an honest living), more people turn to crime. In time, the prisons become filled with people incarcerated for behavior that could have been at least partially prevented with proper nutrition. Happiness: With disease rates skyrocketing, violent crime on the rise, education failures rampant and health care costs bankrupting families, happiness plummets to all-time lows. Genetic Integrity: As junk food consumption continues through multiple generations, the genetic integrity of the population erodes. Birth defects increase while fertility rates plummet. The population increasingly becomes haunted with unhealthy genetic mutations that promote yet more disease in future generations. Economic Productivity: Poor nutrition leads to disastrous economic productivity. Powered by junk foods, the population becomes virtually useless as a workforce. Instead of producing new ideas, new products and new innovations that www.earthstarmag.com improve the world, people sit around eating Fritos and watching YouTube videos. Economic productivity plummets, and employers shift jobs to overseas markets where people often demonstrate much higher levels of productivity. World Leadership: With its population falling behind the world academically and economically, the nation loses its leadership position on the world stage and begins to lose its leverage for maintaining the dominance of its currency. Democracy & Freedom: When the voters subsist on a bad diet, their minds are clouded and child-like. They are easily manipulated to vote for politicians who are essentially “entertainers” — people who look good on TV but have no real ability to improve the long-term situation for the country. Voters on junk foods elect the very people who continue to drive the nation into disease and disaster. Next: Why pharmaceuticals make it all much worse... The problem with medication As you can see, the problems caused by poor nutrition can literally destroy a nation. They reach into every area of society: The economy, education, health care, global competitiveness and even Democracy itself. And yet, instead of treating these nutrition problems with a sound nutritional program, the United States of America has chosen to ignore the problem and treat people with chemical prescription drugs. This widespread use of prescription drugs to mask the symptoms of nutritional imbalances causes the following problems that further erode the strength of any nation: Public Safety: Medicated drivers are unsafe drivers. In the United States today, as much as one-third of all traffic accidents involve medication-impaired drivers. Instead of being alert with the help of healthful foods, our drivers are mentally compromised by medications. Impaired Cognitive Function: This impaired cognitive function continues at work, too, where medicated workers make mistakes, suffer reduced productivity and ultimately fail to perform to their full potential. Deterioration of Democracy: Along with impaired cognitive function comes the inability to vote intelligently, causing voters to repeatedly elect disastrously unqualified representatives to Congress (and other offices). This, in turn, erodes the bedrock of Democracy as dishonest or unqualified politicians betray the future of the People for their own personal gain. More Disease: Medications used to treat one disease today end up causing more diseases in the future (virtually all medications cause some level of liver and kidney damage, and many promote brain and heart damage at the same time). For example, common over-the-counter painkillers cause the deaths of several thousand Americans each year just from gaswww.earthstarmag.com trointestinal bleeding. Huge Increase in Health Care Costs: During all this, the monopoly pricing of medications causes health care costs to continue skyrocketing, further threatening the financial stability of the nation. Environmental Destruction: After all those medications pass through the bodies of consumers, they end up in the sewage systems, where they are eventually dumped into rivers and other waterways. (Most drugs, such as HRT drugs, are not filtered out by water treatment systems.) These potent chemicals pose a huge threat to aquatic ecosystems and contribute to the destruction of coral reefs and ocean life. Do you see where all this is heading? Higher costs and lower productivity. Increased rates of disease and decreased economic productivity. Environmental destruction. It’s not difficult to extrapolate this pattern and see where such a nation might be headed. The accelerating downfall of the United States of America is a textbook example of how a nation rapidly deteriorates under the influence of excessive medication and disease-promoting processed foods. Next: How nutrition can save a nation... The good diet Fortunately, there’s a solution to all this: Any nation that wishes to remain strong and successful must follow a “good” diet. What is a good diet? • Consists primarily of fresh, unprocessed plants (fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds) which can be made into a variety of delicious recipes (raw food chefs are especially good at this craft). • Minimizes consumption of meat or animal products (including dairy). • Avoids virtually all processed, manufactured foods and beverages, or only uses them sparingly. • Consists of a wide variety of different foods so that phytonutrient diversity is high, providing consumers with a steady supply of plant-based medicine that prevents disease. • Includes substantial time outdoors, in nature, where vitamin D can be created and stored in the body. • Minimizes or eliminates all refined sugars and carbohydrates (like white flour). • Eliminates GMOs from the food supply in order to avoid the health damage caused by GM foods. • Minimizes consumption of foods sprayed with chemical pesticides or fungicides. This not only helps prevent disease caused by such chemicals; it also protects the environment from chemical contamination. APRIL / MAY 2010 EARTH STAR 59 • Incorporates adequate hydration from clean water (while avoiding dubious liquids such as sodas and sports drinks). Happiness: A healthy population is a happy population. • Includes nutritional supplementation to correct nutritional imbalances or deficiencies. (This can be accomplished through superfoods, food-based vitamins, etc.) Genetic Integrity: On a healthful diet, the genetic integrity of the population remains well-protected. So the genetic future of the population stays intact. This diet, as you might guess, is rarely pursued by the average American consumer. Only highly health-conscious individuals even attempt such a diet, and it does require extra time, effort and money to make a reality. But the benefits are worth it. They can, in fact, save a nation from destruction! Economic Productivity: Economic productivity skyrockets. A healthy, productive workforce remains globally competitive while creating long-term job security. Next: The benefits of a healthy diet (and why good nutrition is patriotic!)... Benefits of a good diet Here are some of the many benefits that will be experienced by any nation pursuing a healthy diet: Personal Health: With a healthy diet, degenerative disease rates plummet by as much as ninety percent. People live longer and happier, with far greater productivity. Disease industries go bankrupt as their customer base vanishes. Health Care Costs: Health care costs plummet by ninety percent saving the nation trillions of dollars in sick-care treatment costs. People who used to have jobs in the sick-care industry can now dedicate their professional efforts to something more useful to the economy. Education: On a healthy diet, children are far easier to educate. Their minds work better, so grades go up, test scores improve, behavioral problems are reduced and the nation once again starts to compete with academic achievers from other nations. Employment & Economy: A healthy, nutritionally-supported workforce is highly productive. With improved mental and physical health, people are easily able to find and keep productive jobs. Unemployment rates plummet. Employees’ increased productivity makes them more competitive from the point of view of employers, so fewer companies outsource jobs, effectively bringing more jobs back to the U.S. Remember: Employers want to hire healthy workers, but they tend to shun unhealthy workers. Violent Crime: With increased job opportunities and improved mental health due to a good diet, violent crime rates plummet. Prisons become ghost towns as the prison industry suffers “downsizing.” Cities save money by needing fewer cops. Many people who might have been criminals while eating bad diets become job-holding, tax-paying citizens under a good diet. (This isn’t an oversimplification. Crime and nutritional deficiencies are strongly correlated. Check the medical literature to learn more...) 60 EARTH STAR APRIL / MAY 2010 World Leadership: With a healthy, productive and innovative workforce, the nation has a strong economy which translates into greater opportunities for world leadership. The nation has more influence over international trade, diplomacy, problem resolution, global resource allocation, and so on. Democracy & Freedom: A healthy, happy and well-educated population can participate in Democracy in a thoughtful way. As a result, voters make wiser choices by assessing politicians for their skills and ideas rather than their TV presence. Democracy gets healthier as the voters apply critical thinking skills (and strong educational backgrounds) to their voting decisions. A healthy Democracy with intelligent voters helps create and protect a more free society. As you can see, a good diet positively impacts virtually every area of importance to a nation, from the economy and happiness to freedom itself. Every nation has a choice about what sort of diet it promotes to its People. What choice has your nation chosen? Next: What diet has America chosen? What diet has America chosen? It’s obvious from looking around any grocery store (or watching any TV broadcast) in America that the nation has chosen to pursue a disastrously bad diet. The vast majority of “food” products sold at grocery stores are manufactured, processed foods made with chemical additives, cooked at high heats that produce dangerous byproducts, and then packaged in toxic packaging materials like plastics containing BPA. America is addicted to fast foods and junk foods. People eat to fill their bellies and entertain their tongues, not to nourish their minds and bodies. Food has devolved from something that nourishes the body to a chemically-altered sensory addiction fabricated in a factory somewhere. So instead of food being medicine, it has become a source of disease. And America is paying a dear price for choosing this route. All the negative repercussions of choosing a bad diet are now coming true in America: Increased crime and chronic degenerative disease, reduced cognitive function and productivity, huge increases in health care costs, rising infertility, increases in birth defects and mysterious neurological disorders, and so on. These negative consequences of a bad diet are causing the rapid erosion of America’s economy. Faced with the burden of carrying tens of millions of sick people who could otherwise be productive if they had chosen the path of nutrition, the U.S. www.earthstarmag.com economy is dragged down by the weight of sickness and disease. Its competitiveness is drastically reduced by the suppressed cognitive function caused by processed foods and chemical additives. Its education system has fallen far behind world standards, thanks in large part to the brain-slowing junk foods children are fed at home and at school. The result? A nation that can’t compete. And that sets off a chain reaction of off-shoring, downsizing, and job sector reconfigurations that see millions of U.S. jobs shifted overseas where workers offer higher productivity at lower costs... and where health care is a fraction of the price of the United States. Taiwan, for example, offers a nationwide, universal health care solution for just $21 per month. In the U.S., the annual health insurance premium for a family of four is anywhere from ten- to fifteen thousand dollars and that doesn’t even include out-of-pocket expenses for doctors’ visits, medications and deductibles. Poor nutrition has put America into a debtor’s prison when it comes to health and medicine. All the diseases caused by the consumption of unhealthful foods have made American workers virtually unaffordable for global businesses due to outrageous health insurance costs. eat (or what to avoid). (The “Free Choice” approach.) Method #2) Restrict access to junk foods to prevent people from making food consumption decisions that are not in their own best long-term interests (the “Nanny State” approach). A nation that wishes to be strong and healthy must, in my opinion, pursue both of these methods. Here are some of the ways in which these goals can be pursued: Method #1 - Educate People • Teach real nutrition in public schools. All of this could have been prevented with a better diet for America. So let’s get to it! • Require doctors to learn the principles of nutrition and teach them to patients. Next: How to create a strong nation with healthy food... Creating a strong, healthy nation In order to sell more products, food and beverage companies have mastered the art of engineering food-like substances that exploit the hard-wired taste preferences of the human tongue. Humans can primarily taste sugar, salt and fat, and not coincidentally, those are the three primary things that food companies put into factory foods that are marketed to the public. Food is fabricated specifically to be addictive, much like crack. And a surprisingly large portion of the population will always seek out such addictive, synthesized food tastes in much the same way that a heroin-addicted lab rat will keep pushing the drug lever to self-medicate with even more heroin. (This metaphor is eerily accurate when it comes to junk foods and human behavior...) There are only really two ways to prevent such people from seeking out and consuming such foods: Method #1) Educate people about junk foods and health so that they can make better-informed decisions about what to www.earthstarmag.com • Require all broadcast media outlets (cable, TV, radio, etc.) to dedicate some small percentage of their airtime to airing pronutrition public service announcements (as an exchange for the right to use FCC-regulated airwaves). • Put very high taxes on all processed foods and junk foods, then use those tax dollars to fund public service announcements teaching consumers to avoid those foods. (I’m not a huge fan of using taxes in this way, but it’s one idea worth considering.) • Tax the key ingredients used in processed foods such as high-fructose corn syrup or refined white sugar. Then use that money to fund pro-nutrition public service announcements. • Require all food retailers to place public service educational booklets in or near aisles where food is purchased. Those booklets should provide honest information about the dangers of processed foods and chemical additives, including mentioning the diseases they cause: Cancer, diabetes, depression, etc. APRIL / MAY 2010 EARTH STAR 61 • Require prominent food labels that warn consumers about the diseases caused by the particular ingredients used in processed foods. This is similar to the lung cancer warnings on cigarette packages. A box of sugary breakfast cereal, for example, should carry a large red warning label that reads, “WARNING: This product contains ingredients known to promote diabetes.” Method #2 - Restrict access Here are some ideas that could be pursued to restrict consumers’ access to disease-promoting foods: • Ban ALL advertising of processed foods, factory-made foods or non-natural foods of any kind. This includes TV, radio, Internet, sporting sponsorships, etc. • Ban disease-promoting ingredients from the food supply altogether: High-fructose corn syrup, aspartame, MSG, trans fats, artificial colors, sodium nitrite, etc. • Hit food retailers with draconian new food display laws that forbid junk foods from being displayed on end caps, near checkout counters, at eyelevel on the shelves, etc. (I normally don’t go for “Draconian” anything, but this is one idea to be considered.) • End government subsidies on corn and sugar, as these are the sources from which cheap, nutritionally-depleted foods are made. Place heavy taxes on food manufacturers for producing unhealthful foods and beverages. This will have the same effect as raising retail taxes on those items, but it’s easier to administer this tax at the manufacturer rather than at retail. • Place heavy taxes on food manufacturers for producing unhealthful foods and beverages. This will have the same effect as raising retail taxes on those items, but it’s easier to administer this tax at the manufacturer rather than at retail. • Use tax money raised from taxing junk foods to subsidize fresh produce, thereby making fresh fruits and vegetables more affordable to American families. (Again, I’m generally against using the tax code in such ways, but it’s an idea worth debating.) Next: How to make shape consumer behavior with taxes or subsidies... 62 EARTH STAR APRIL / MAY 2010 Food taxes and subsidies Economically speaking, using taxes to alter consumer behavior does work. Consumers are price sensitive, so making unhealthful foods ridiculously expensive while making healthful foods more affordable seems to make sense if you wish to use taxes to shape behavior. But in a free society, it’s always better, in my opinion, to rely on public education and limits on advertising to allow consumers to make their own informed decisions about what they wish to purchase and consume. If consumers were really aware that hot dogs cause brain cancer, for example, (because of sodium nitrite), or that highfructose corn syrup promotes diabetes and obesity, they might make far better decisions about what they wish to feed themselves and their children. At the same time, you can’t discount the impact of interventionist tax policy to alter point-of-purchase prices. Imagine taking this to the extreme: What if a bag of fresh apples cost one penny, while a box of apple-flavored PopTarts cost ten dollars? How would that alter consumer behavior? Most families, out of sheer economic necessity, would opt for the far cheaper fresh produce while avoiding the extremely high cost of processed foods. The cost of subsidizing the healthful foods would be easily earned back by the nation in terms of greatly reduced health care costs and increases in economic productivity (not to mention improved happiness, lower rates of disease, improved results in education, etc.). In fact, it’s not unreasonable to suppose that in a progressive, health-conscious nation, all fresh produce might be fully subsidized by the taxpayers, effectively making their purchases (virtually) free. Imagine ten cents for a pound of carrots, or fifty cents for a bunch of organic broccoli. This could be done through taxes, subsidies, if desired. There would be fraud in the system, of course. Growers would try to claim more subsidies than they are due, so you can expect some waste overhead to exist. You would also see Americans making “junk food border runs” to Mexico and Canada where junk food items are sold at market prices instead of the high-tax prices enacted in the USA. In effect, you would see “junk food smugglers” bringing in truck-loads of Pop-Tarts and Frosted Flakes in order to make a profit undercutting the high-tax retail prices in the U.S. www.earthstarmag.com The scope of this activity would be directly proportional to the difference in prices between the U.S. vs. Mexico (or Canada). As is typical of Big Government, the Feds would then criminalize the covert importation of junk foods and start running raids on junk food smugglers. You could literally go to prison for getting caught with a van full of Pop-Tarts! That’s why taxes and subsidies are a messy business. Nations must tread carefully in this area. If taxes on junk foods are too high, they will inevitably create a very large underground market for smuggled junk foods, resulting in a rather large “criminal” operation of junk food smugglers and the widespread avoidance of the very taxes intended to be imposed. But beyond taxes and subsidies, there’s a bigger question in all this: Next: Who profits from disease? (And why they have to go...) Who profits from disease? Of course, if you really want to create a healthy nation, you have to be prepared to see widespread job losses across the industries that currently profit from sickness and disease. Those industries include the pharmaceutical industry, agriculture giants, junk food retailers and even the mainstream media. If America gets healthy with good nutrition, each of these industries would suffer considerable losses in jobs and revenues. They depend on disease for their very existence, of course, so eliminating (or greatly reducing) disease will have a devastating impact on them. But that’s a good thing for America. Every job that treats disease is a job wasted from a big picture civilization point of view. Without disease, that worker could be doing something far more productive such as contributing to a brighter future as an educator, artist, engineer, writer or some other noble profession. It’s not that being a doctor or nurse isn’t noble (nursing, in particular, is quite a noble calling), but wouldn’t it be better for the economy as a whole if all the jobs focused on disease could be rendered obsolete by healthy people who don’t need such services? Under such a scenario, all the “disease jobs” could be shifted to something else (like researching renewable energy technologies, for example). Unfortunately, every industry fights for survival in our economy, even if it only offers products or services based on sickness and disease. And for many of these industries, the real financial windfall only occurs when the population is kept in a state of ongoing chronic disease. A healthy population means disaster for these industries. Here are some of the big ones: The Pharmaceutical Industry - Big Pharma would lose a fortune if the population got healthy with nutrition. It sells billions of dollars worth of drugs every year and depends on disease to sell them. All the pharmacies that retail those drugs would also go out of business: CVS, Walgreen, Wal-Mart, Safeway, etc. The Medical Industry - All those hospitals, doctors’ offices www.earthstarmag.com and emergency rooms also depend on a steady stream of diseased, malnourished Americans to guarantee their job security and incomes. A drop in disease would mean the rapid downsizing of hospitals and clinics. The Food & Agriculture Giants - The Big Food and Big Ag companies bet their profits on the continued purchasing of processed, nutritionally-depleted food and beverage products that directly contribute to degenerative disease. High-Fructose Corn Syrup, for example, is a very profitable ingredient to use in processed foods. Never mind the fact that it promotes diabetes and obesity... it’s cheaper than sugar! The Mainstream Media - The MSM, meanwhile, depends on the advertising dollars of drug companies, soda companies and junk food companies to keep its own financial lifeline intact. If junk food and pharmaceutical advertising were both banned, the media would suffer enormous losses in ad revenues. It’s all those nutritionally worthless, disease-promoting products that keep the MSM in business! Remember, the MSM is in the business of “junk food news,” meaning they produce a “diet” of junk news for human consumption (http://rense.com/general88/paid.htm). The Health Insurance Industry - This industry realizes huge financial gains from sickness and disease. The more people are sick, the higher the insurance premiums (and the more profit is mathematically built in). Furthermore, the more people get sick, the more they feel they need to buy insurance, so more disease inevitably leads to higher revenues across the health insurance industry. Junk Food Retailers - This includes your local grocery store, by the way, which is stacked to the hilt with processed, disease-causing junk foods. It’s the same story with Costco or Sam’s Clubs. Wal-Mart and even local pharmacies are also chock full of disease-promoting junk foods that nutritionists know are linked to cancer, heart disease, diabetes, obesity, kidney stones, depression and many other problems. But selling junk food is big business and grocery stores aren’t about to restrict the products they sell just because they happen to promote disease. Pharmacies still sell cigarettes! Disease Non-Profits - Never forget how much money is collected by the disease non-profit groups like the American Cancer Society. These “rich” non-profits depend entirely on the continuation of their sponsored disease in order to stay in power. In a world without cancer (to reference G. Edward Griffin’s book title), there’s no need for the ACS. Nor for the Susan Komen cancer group with all its ridiculous pink ribbons that pretend we can all cure cancer by going shopping. For every significant disease affecting the western world today, there’s an associated disease group depending on that disease for its own survival. In all, these industries represent anywhere from one-quarter to one-half of the entire U.S. economy. Unleashing a wave of nutrition and health in America would therefore destroy a sigAPRIL / MAY 2010 EARTH STAR 63 nificant portion of the U.S. economy as currently configured. It would put rich, powerful corporations out of business and send hundreds of thousands of works out onto the streets to look for new jobs. And yet, it’s still a good thing for America, because all that economic activity (focused on disease) is really a net LOSS to America, not a net gain. Economists don’t differentiate good from bad when it comes to GDP, but the truth is that every dollar spent treating someone’s disease is actually a dollar wasted on something that could have been prevented for a nickel’s worth of nutrition. Nutrition is a good investment in America. Why spend dollars treating disease when you can spend nickels keeping people healthy? Putting the disease industry out of business is a good thing, because if sick-care isn’t getting much business, that means the People are getting healthier, happier and more productive. And that’s what keeps a nation strong and successful in the long run. Step 8) Avoid medications. Prescription drugs are poison. If you’re currently taking meds, work with a naturopathic physician to safely get off those meds and heal your body through nutrition (or other natural therapies). Next: 12 action steps for saving America right now... Step 11) Thank yourself for taking the time to invest in your own good health by reading this report. Give yourself a healing reward such as a glass of fresh orange / carrot juice or a delicious superfood smoothie. 12 steps to save America So how can we really save America with nutrition? It all starts with you and your family. Follow these 12 steps to unleash a new era of health and wellness in your own life: Step 1) Stop rewarding manufacturers of processed foods, junk foods, sodas and pharmaceuticals. Simply refuse to buy their products. Step 2) Greatly increase your purchases of fresh, organic produce. Get yourself a juicer (I like the Breville brand) and drink a fresh juice smoothie every day. Teach your children to eat more fresh produce. Step 3) Supplement your diet with health-enhancing superfoods and nutritional supplements. You may wish to include nutrient-dense algae products like spirulina, blue-green algae, chlorella and astaxanthin. Step 4) Greatly increase your intake of Omega-3 oils. I take Moxxor’s Green-Lipped Mussel oil as well as consuming wild salmon from time to time. Step 9) Avoid hospitals. A hospital is one of the most dangerous places you can go. They’re filled with antibiotic-resistant superbugs, for one thing. Your risk of being harmed at a hospital is much higher than what you might expect. Unless you’re suffering from an acute, dangerous condition requiring emergency medical care, make an effort to stay away from hospitals. Step 10) Embrace your own natural healing potential! Recognize that your immune system is a technological miracle. Your body is a self-repairing biological marvel. When given the right resources (nutrition, superfoods, etc.), your body can work healing miracles. Step 12) Forward this special report to 3 friends, family members or coworkers you know who might benefit from this information. Spread the word about nutrition and you’ll be taking part in a wave of healing that can sweep across our planet as people reawaken to the healing powers of plantbased nutrients Thank you for reading! Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, currently lives in Vilcabamba, Ecuador where he grows and consumes a large assortment of fresh, organic fruits and vegetables (http://www.naturalnews.com/photos.html). The creator of the Health Revolution Petition (www.HealthRevolutionPetition.org), Adams believes in individual liberty, personal responsibility and natural healing. His mission is to share natural health secrets with the world with the hope of unleashing of a new golden age of health and healing that uplifts human civilization. He founded NaturalNews in 2003 and remains its editor today. Step 5) Get a lot more sunshine: Your body (and your mind) needs sunlight. It generates the vitamin D that helps prevent cancer, depression, diabetes and heart disease. Step 6) Boost your physical exercise. Studies repeatedly show that even moderate exercise (walking three times a week, for example), has a drastic reduction on rates of heart disease, cancer and diabetes. Step 7) Exercise your brain: Learn a new language, play strategy games, read books or do something active with your brain to keep all the neurons firing. This is all much easier when your brain is powered by superfoods, by the way. 64 EARTH STAR APRIL / MAY 2010 www.earthstarmag.com
