SOLIDARITY FOR ROMANIA
SOLIDARITY FOR ROMANIA Independent Informative Civic Bulletin nr. 2 January 2014 SO L ID A R I T A T E PE N T R U R O M A N I A 1 MILAN, ITALY, December 6, 2013: A show organized by the General Consulate of Romania and the Church of the Holy Spirit in Milan. All Romanians are feeling for Pungești and for everything taking place back in Romania. Roxana Macovei: “I went there to display a few banners as a sign of support and solidarity with the people in Pungești […] At one climactic point, to the tune of “We Are Romanians” sung by Aurel Tamas, we all stood up and the Consulate staff, acting like crazed vultures, promptly yanked the banners out of our hands and the information sheets from other spectators. Therefore, we can conclude – who are these people supporting?” 2 The young, enthusiastic, under-cover secret police staff pulling sheets and banners from stupefied spectators. + + Let us see what notable events took place in the first two weeks of the year 2014, from a social-civic point of view: Jan 2nd | Thursday A spontaneous meeting of villagers took place in front of the city hall in Pungesti, Vaslui. According to Mediafax, more than 200 local people and environmental activists manifested their discontent regarding the decisions of the mayor Mircea Vlasa, the official who leased 2 hectares of land to the American firm Chevron for the exploitation of shale gas. The riot police tried to prevent protesters from reaching the city hall headquarters. Consequently, people had to walk over the hills to reach their destination. On December 8th 2013, Pungesti had been declared “special public security zone” by the Vaslui Police, following the events that took place there on December 7th.n Jan 4 | Saturday The villagers who had been on hunger strike in Pungesti, as a sign of protest against the installation of probes for the exploitation of shale gas by Chevron and the abuses done by the riot police, decided to end the strike. They accused the riot police of employing intimidation tactics, since police officers ID-ed them and accused them of illegally occupying the land on which the new resistance camp had been established. The strike began on December 24, and lasted 11 days, with 13 of the 30 protesters being able to resist throughout the whole period.n Jan 6 | Monday The High Court of Cassation and Justice sentenced former Prime Minister, Adrian Nastase, to four years imprisonment for blackmail and bribery, and his wife, Dana, to three years suspended imprisonment in the Zambaccian case. Also, Adrian Nastase had certain rights suspended for a period of five years, and the sum of 1.8 million lei has been confiscated from his families’ wealth.n Yet, according to some legal provisions, it is possible that the sentence received will be executed only partially. This is due to Nastase's age, the fact that he already executed over eight months of another sentence, and other extenuating circumstances. Therefore, it is possible that Adrian Nastase will remain imprisoned only for approximatively another 8 months.n Jan 10 | Friday The Decentralization Law, for which the Government assumed responsibility in Parliament in November 2013 is declared unconstitutional by the Constitutional Court. Its author, Liviu Dragnea, appears surprised by this decision. n Jan 7-12 | Sunday Protests are taking place against the exploitation of shale gas and exploitations using cyanide, in the streets of Sibiu, Deva, Oradea and Cluj. The number of protesters is varying from tens to hundreds. In some small towns (Tulca-Bihor, Biled-Timis) informative sessions regarding the shale gas are taking place.n In Bucharest, Alexandru Popescu decides to end the hunger strike on January 12, after 22 days of consecutive protests in front of the National Theatre, in the University Plaza. The purpose of this act was to point to the dangers represented by the exploring and exploitation of shale gases through hydraulic fracking and to the abuses of the riot police in Pungesti, Vaslui. Around 150-200 people gather for "a S O L I D A R I T A T E PE N T R U R OMA N I A This informative bulletin is initiated by Romanians from inside the country and from abroad, focused on the current situation in Romania and united through acts and attitude with the citizens, whose rights were neglected by the Romanian state and whose wishes are often ignored not only by the representatives of the state (Government, Parliament, Presidency), but also by the representatives of the mass-media. Our aim is to offer a synthesis of the main events of civic interest on a given period, both from a social point of view, civic, as well as from a legal or administrative point of view, as an alternative to the mainstream press and audience. It is a turning point in the true sense of the word for Romanians, as well as for other nations on Earth. It suffices to observe street movements in most European countries (Spain, Greece, Germany, the Ukraine, Bulgaria, etc.) to understand this fact. In Romania’s case, 2013 seems to have been the year during which many finally understood that, if they continue to remain indifferent to what governing powers are doing, the situation will go from bad to worse. The cyanide gold mining case at Rosia Montana is all but one example. The exploitation of shale gases using the hydraulic fracking method, the market liberalization for purchasing agricultural land, the amnesty law, etc. will follow. Practically, part of the Romanian population have ended up in an open state of war with its own leaders and state representatives. Politicians who put their own personal interests above the interest of the people who live in this country, who ultimately pay their salaries are akin to cancerous cells that feed off the energy of a healthy body, which, in their insanity, they aim to destroy bit by bit. That is why it is imperative for every person to ask oneself: what sort of a life do I want to live on this Planet? Is it one of lies, hypocrisy and selfishness or one of truth, sincerity and solidarity? How do I want the humans next to who I want to live to be like? Cunning, suspicious, lacking decency, or open, welcoming and with common sense? We invite you, dear reader, to ask yourself the same questions, and act accordingly. It is the least we can do to assume responsibility. | Marius L Protesters from Pungești who penetrated the “Unirii” Square in Iasi, on the 24th of January. Unfortunately, by the time the TVR reporter arrived in the Plaza, Alexandru had already left and, therefore, no interview with him has taken place.n Alexandru Popescu’s act is being repeated at a smaller scale by other activists. Several others joined him in this hunger strike: George Popescu, Ionut Mares, Cristina Veres (Cluj), George Adamescu (Bucharest), Alexandru Beldiman (Sibiu), Matei Barbulescu (Bucharest). After his departure, the hunger strike is being continued by other activists such as Ion Profeanu, Dumitrescu Ovidiu Stefan, Marius Lazar, who take turns in this form of protest for a minimum of 24 hours.
