So many of you have meant so much to this club and to the community. Albuquerque is truly a better place for children due to your generosities. Your time, talents and treasures are still needed today more than ever. I want this year to be about children and ways we can have a meaningful impact on their lives. We want to initiate projects that show that we are still a prominent service organization, and motivate lots of new members to help us continue this legacy. There is no doubt that clubs and organizations like ours are changing. With that in mind, I think it is important for us to change while remaining true to our mission. “Serving One Child One Community At A Time.” I task each of you to have an open mind as we approach this year. I will probably do things that some will love and some will hate. The important thing for you to know is that I am doing them because I believe in what all of you have done and continue to do serving this community. It is vitally important to me to that we pass on the ideals of this Club and of service to others, to my generation, and the generations that follow. Especially to my sons Cole and Davis. So I ask you to join me in a year that hopefully will start us on a new path that makes the next 100 years of the Kiwanis Club of Albuquerque as successful as the first 100 years. I leave you with a quote from Lou Holtz. It is up to us to shape the future of this club. I look forward to doing it with you. President, Kiwanis Club of Albuquerque This Kiwanian newsletter is the unofficial publication of the Kiwanis Club of Albuquerque and its Charitable Foundation. Serious efforts are made to release editions at the beginning of each month. Members are encouraged to share this newsletter with friends and likely members of our club. Comments and suggestions are encouraged: write to Dave Orner (bottom of Page 1) who may forward it to the relevant Officer or Committee Member. The following people were recognized recently, and all our members are encouraged to thank them profusely for their efforts on behalf of our Club. Walter P. Zeller Fellowships: Mary Jo Dawson and Michael Vigil George F. Hixson Fellowships: Mark Haley and Susan Jennings Kachina Award: Phyllis Cooper Special Service Awards: Bill Archibeck, Steve Bass, David Heiman, and Susan Ng {Dave Heiman is shown pointing out the Jim Hansen Pumpkin Patch at the Kiwanis Learning Garden} K Kids at Manzano Mesa Off to a Fast Start Multiple activities have been completed and a big new one is under way for the dynamic K Kids Club at Manzano Mesa Elementary, which happens to be a “Community School.” Under the leadership of 4th grade teacher Valerie Holton and energetic support from Gretchen Steininger of our club, this K Kids chapter certainly rivals any elementary program for community action, education by doing, and for fundraising. The Buddy Walk: The 6th Annual Buddy Walk hosted by the Rio Grande Down Syndrome Network was held on September 26, 2015. The Buddy Walk was created by the National Down Syndrome Society in 1995 to celebrate Down Syndrome Awareness Month in October. In 2014, more than $13 million was raised nationwide. There were 7-8 K-Kids that participated in the walk this past weekend around the North grounds of the Albuquerque Balloon Museum and medals were awarded out to all with Down Syndrome and children under 12 years of age. The First Day of K-Kids: The Manzano K-Kids program kick-started the year with the kids splitting up into groups of 3-4 and making a list of all the community service projects and fund raisers that they did last school year. All of the previous K-Kids and officers returned and introduced themselves to the newbies, making a total of at least 20 K-Kids. They also started to make their individual "positive statement" poster to hang in the hallways of the school. They will take turns reading these statements during the Announcements on many mornings to everyone in the school. Mrs. Holton has new projects planned, including the “Fitness-Thon” on Saturday, November 7th from 10 am to 12 pm at the school as a fundraiser. Flyers will be passed out at Monday meetings, and our Club members are encouraged to support this event in one of many ways: by participating in a public display of fitness, buying an ad or a sponsorship, or selling ads and sponsorships. One exciting way we could make a big show of support on Nov. 7 would be to stage a Kiwanis Club adult Flash Mob Dance to show the community we can play and dance as well
