VBS Jungle Safari was so much fun!
St. Timothy Lutheran Church
VBS Jungle Safari was so
much fun!
Saturday, 5 p.m. — We continue
our new evening prayer liturgy, Behold Our Light, written for St. Timothy in memory of Don Carhart by
Aaron David Miller.
Sunday, 8 a.m. — Burlington Park,
Naperville, is the site for Sunday
Worship in the Woods. Tucked into
a quiet neighborhood, the site offers
beautiful worship under a covered
pavilion where we gather rain or shine.
From St. Timothy, travel south
on Mill St. to Jefferson. Turn right,
then right again on S. Parkway to the
gravel lot. Bring dogs, lawn chairs
and blankets. We provide bug spray!
Sunday, 9:30 a.m. — Full of praise
and joy, this blended service offers
passionate expressions of God’s loving presence through word, sacrament, prayer and song.
About 70 children participated in a
joyful week, June 9-13, at St. Timothy’s Jungle Safari Vacation Bible
school (see story pg. 5). And we celebrated two special birthdays: Miss
Cindy (above) and Ella Casten
(right).

Musings
Welcome Daniel
Daniel Morris,
our new
associate
pastor, will
preach for the
first time at St.
Timothy, July 5
and 6. I urge
you to worship
Pr. David L. Miller
at one the three
services that
weekend to hear his message and
warmly welcome him, and his wife,
Amanda, into the family of St.
Timothy Lutheran.
He has a lot of work to do. We
have high expectations for his
ministry, and he has high
expectations of our congregation
based on his conversations with the
call committee—and the joyful
congregational potluck when he met
many of you in May.
First impressions are often deep
and lasting, and we want to Daniel to
know our congregation is a caring
community of faith that will partner
with him as he proclaims the gospel
among us, teaching and leading our
youth and faithfully carrying out the
responsibilities of his call.
I clearly remember my initial
impressions of the first congregation
I served, Salem Lutheran Church,
Rural Route 2, Superior, Neb.
We moved to Nebraska with all
our earthy goods packed in a horse
trailer pulled behind Al Hanson’s
Chevy pick-up. It was packed so
tight the trailer door had to be kicked
shut and a lamp shade protruded
between the steel ribs of the trailer.
Arriving at the parsonage 650
miles later, Al backed the trailer
across the gravel driveway to the
front of the garage.
A group from the congregation
began to unload kids’ toys and
couches, pots and pans, a kitchen
table and chairs, but we didn’t get far
before Orville Grummert pulled in
the driveway.
His mother, Bertha, died at home
that morning, and he had been
watching for our arrival. Orville
wanted to drive me to town to talk
with his father, bring some words of
comfort and plan a funeral.
“You go,” Al said. “We got this.”
I went, listened, talked, prayed and
planned.
That was my first day in
Nebraska, my first day as a parish
pastor. It was perfect.
We were connected at
the heart, a community
of Christ’s love sharing
joys and sorrows, disappointments and victories
It taught me everything I needed
to know about what was important
and what would unfold in the years
that followed.
I knew I was not alone.
They were there for me, and more
than anything else they wanted me to
be there for them … to preach the
gospel and teach their kids, to bury
their dead and comfort them when
they mourned, to celebrate with them
at baptisms and confirmations and
graduation parties and to love them
and share whatever the prairie wind
blew our way.
We were connected at the heart,
a community of Christ’s love
sharing joys and sorrows,
disappointments and victories,
bountiful years and the wrenching
agony of watching hail storms and
drought destroy everything you
worked for.
Fast forward to the Sunday
morning in 2008 St. Timothy voted
to call me as senior pastor. I briefly
addressed the congregation after
worship and answered a few
questions before the vote. I
remember one question in
particular.
“What can we do for you?”
someone asked
“Don’t let me be alone,” I
answered. “I need your partnership,
so talk to me. Let me know what
works and what doesn’t. Let me
know we are in this together.”
I still want and need that. Our
whole ministry staff wants and
needs what Orville Grummert and
the unloading crew gave me on my
first day in Nebraska. And this is
what I want you to do for Daniel.
Be his partner in ministry.
Support and pray for him. Work
alongside him. Let him know what
is appreciated and what he might be
missing.
Make sure … as all our staff will
… that he knows he is not alone but
connected at the heart with the
community of Christ, sharing
Christ’s love and mission.
You can start doing this July 5
and 6. Come and welcome him and
Amanda to our family.

Worship and Music
Holy Cross Sunday, September 14
The cross is a symbol of Christian faith and hangs at the front of
sanctuaries all over the world. We wear them on a chain around our
necks and hang them on our walls as a reminder of Christ’s dying and
rising for our salvation. Each time we make the sign of the cross we
remember our baptism into the death and resurrection of Christ.
On Sunday, Sept. 14, we celebrate Holy Cross Day. We are inviting you to gather supplies from your summer journey— pieces of
wood, stones, string, sea shells, etc. and make a cross out of your findings as a reminder of where you met Christ along the way. You may
find these pieces on a walk in a park, or forest, on the beach or even in
your garden.
We will be displaying the crosses on our special cross wall that Sunday, so please leave them on the worship table in the narthex the week of
Sept. 7.
We ask that they be no larger than 24 inches and please put your name
on the back. You may also wish to share in a few written words your experience of turning ordinary things into something sacred. Please attach
this to your cross.
One of the best things about VBS is learning all the great songs and motions to go with them.
Join us in the woods
Each Sunday, at 8:00 a.m., members of St. Timothy gather in the
beauty of God’s church in Burlington
Park, Naperville. Come try this casual worship service and don’t forget to
bring your camp chair, or blanket and
your dog if you like! We’ll supply
the bug spray.

Hall. Internet orders are due Monday, July 21, at 11:00 p.m. Place paper orders in the blue envelope in the Narthex by Sunday, July 20, at 10:30 a.m.
Library notes
Robert Vall is a Naperville author who is a member of the local Saints Peter & Paul Parish. His book The Good Thief: a tale of mercy is in the Christian
Fiction section of our library.
The book has been described as a modern version of the gospel of Luke as
it tells the story of the repentant thief who was crucified with Christ. The main
character, John R. Freeman, born in the middle of the 20th century, is from
Chicago. As he tries to find his place in the world, young John Freeman must
face the consequences of a series of bad choices and personal disasters. The
books is a quick read and a good story that leaves the reader feeling like there
is always hope, no matter what happens in life.
Add this book to your summer reading list! Don’t forget St. Timothy’s library when looking for summer reading choices for children and teens.
Green Notes
On July 12 and 13, worship will focus on the blessings of God’s creation.
Summertime means enjoying outdoor activities and vacationing in scenic
places. As we experience the beauty of God’s creation, it’s important to remember to be keepers of the earth and preserve the natural resources God has
given us.
Do One Green Thing! Use our natural resources wisely!
Here is one suggestion: Fill your own reusable water bottle at home. Did you
know that Americans consume half a billion plastic water bottles a year? Only about 20 percent are recycled and the rest go into landfills.
Or do one of these:
 Conserve water: Fix a dripping faucet. Take shorter showers.
 Save fuel costs: Shop locally at a farmer’s market for produce.
 Refuse plastic: Take your own reusable bag to the store.
 Save energy: Turn off lights when you leave a room. Turn off your computer every night.
 Reduce waste: Reuse items when you can, such as padded mailers and
plastic containers.
 Preserve clean air: Turn off the car while waiting to pick up someone.
Make a change! Do One Green Thing!

Luncheon
July is the month that the group
goes out and lunch is on us! Join us
at Braconi’s (Cress Creek shopping
plaza on Ogden Ave.) at noon, on
Thursday, July 17.
.
Chat on Tap
July’s session of Chat on Tap is
scheduled for Tuesday, July 1 at
Braconi’s Pradel room, 7:30 p.m.
(Cress Creek Plaza on Ogden) This
gathering of members and friends of
St. Timothy is an opportunity to informally talk about current events and
being a Christian. Please join us for
this for this time of fellowship and
discussion. All are welcome!
Thank You Altar Guild
Our congregation is blessed by
volunteers who faithfully support the
numerous missions of St. Timothy
Lutheran Church.
This month, we would like to formally recognize and thank the Altar
Guild. This dedicated group prepares
the sanctuary every week for worship. They do this by preparing key
components for our services – such
as setting up for communion and baptisms. Their preparation allows us to
participate in these meaningful parts
of our services.
Altar Guild, we thank you for
your actions, leadership and dedication.

Faith Development
You are
invited to take
a faith journey
with the Faith
Development
Committee
and a summer
faith-based
book study!
Grace Eventually: Thoughts on
Faith by Anne Lamott has been selected as our summer book. Read the
book at your leisure. In late summer/
early fall there will be opportunities
to join in discussions about the
book.
It is our hope that you will be
challenged in your own faith journey
as you travel with Anne Lamott on
her path and later reflect with others
in thoughtful discussion at the end
of summer.
A sign-up sheet and copies of the
book are available in the narthex,
for $12.50. We hope you will read
with us!

“Welcome to the Jun-
gle” VBS Summer 2014
Thank you for your prayers and
support in February and March for
our spring break camp in Washington, IL. We need your help again!
A 22-member St. Timothy team
will travel about 13 hours to Yukon,
OK at the end of July. We are so
blessed to have the opportunity to
serve again in this love-inspired
ministry to children who have suffered through a disaster.
Yukon and El Reno, communities near Oklahoma City, were devastated by an EF5 tornado a few
weeks after the storm that destroyed
much of Moore, OK, which our
team served in 2013. The El Reno
tornado did not receive as much media coverage, but it had 300 mph
winds and was 2.6 miles wide--the
widest ever recorded.
To Help:
 Please pray for our team, the
children and families whom God
places in our care and for the
community who will be hosting
the camp.

Sponsor a fleece blanket for a
Camp Noah camper at a cost of
$30. These blankets are a special
part of Camp Noah.

Make a general donation to St.
Timothy Camp Noah. These
funds will be used for travel expenses and camp supplies.
St. Timothy was transformed into
a wild, wonderful jungle the week of
June 9 – 13 with about 70 children
gathered for Jungle Safari VBS.
They learned God is our creator, provider, protector, savior and king.
They had a blast!
Thank you to the many adults and
youth who helped in so many ways:
making and putting up the great jungle decorations, teaching and leading
our Bible stories, making fun and
exciting crafts, leading energetic
games, preparing delicious snacks,
singing and dancing to the catchy
music and working so well together.
A special thank you to the four
VBS Directors: Michelle Bain, Lindsay Casten, Julie Loos and Tonya
Schmidt, who pulled the many puzzle pieces of VBS into a beautiful
picture for the week that was enjoyed
by all.
Our two mission projects for the
week included donating food items to
Loaves & Fishes Food Pantry and pet
supplies to the A.D.O.P.T. pet shelter. Thank you for sharing with those
in need. You helped many of God’s
creatures!
Also, many thanks for the donations of items we used to build our
own jungle for the week. If you have
not taken your animals back home,
please find them on the table in the
back of the narthex.

Confirmation Camp at Lutherdale
Four of St. Timothy’s junior high/middle school youth recently returned
from Living Waters Confirmation Camp at Lutherdale Bible Camp in
Elkhorn, WI (near Lake Geneva), June 15-20. The campers joining Cindy
Mohns were Jason Gasser, Andrea Harker, George Harker, and Molly Vetter.
We all had a great week enjoying ourselves, learning, growing and having fun
in so many different ways – team building, Bible study, worship, swimming,
canoeing, arts and crafts, all-camp events, high ropes, climbing the tower,
playing games, making new friends and growing our relationships with each
other and God. Ask any of us about our week at camp. We’ll be glad to share!

Synod Leadership Lab
Our young leaders continue to
grow! This summer St. Timothy
will send two high school students to
participate in Leadership Lab the
week of July 21 – 26 at Augustana
College in Rock Island, IL. Rachel
Millard, a junior, will return to Lab
for her third year in this excellent
program, and Samuel Millard, a
freshman, will begin this year. They
will meet and make friends as they
spend a week with hundreds of Lutheran high school students from
around the state participating in fun
and exciting activities to help them
grow in their faith, leadership skills,
and learn important practical life
skills. We are excited about their
interest in leading and growing their
leadership skills – invaluable for
life! Please pray for Rachel and
Samuel and all the other youth participating in this meaningful week –
the future leadership of our church.
Ask Rachel and Samuel about their
experiences after they return in late
July when you see them around
church.

Council Highlights
St. Timothy Lutheran Church
Congregational Council Meeting
Highlights
June 17, 2014 at 7:00 p.m.
al months to allow us to continue
without a break while building up
our fund.
Barb Schneider, St. Timothy’s liaison with the Bridge, and Pastor Miller informed Bridge we will try to
raise the needed funds to continue in
August with a new family, but made
no guarantees.
New Business:
Financial Reports – Bill W ilson
was absent from the meeting but left
copies of current financial reports
for the council to review.
Continuing Business:
Pastor Morris will officially begin
his call at St. Timothy July 1.
Volunteerism/Time & Talent
Pastor Miller asked council members
to assist in developing a revised and
expanded Time and Talent inventory
to gather information from the congregation members to enhance volunteerism. The Time & Talent forms
used in the past have either been too
long and confusing or too short and
did not provide enough information.
Several council members asked that
the form be organized around the
five guiding principles St. Timothy
developed from congregational surveys by the Vision Committee. The
council will continue to discuss revisions at the July and August council
meetings, with the goal of having
this completed in time for the September council meeting.
Bridge Communities
The family St. Timothy has been
supporting and mentoring through
our Bridge Communities ministry
will complete the two-year program
in July. Pastor Miller said he had
hoped to take a several month break
in the program to recruit additional
mentors and increase our Bridge
Communities fund before beginning
the process with a new family. St.
Timothy pays $890 a month rent for
the family we assist, and the council
has sought to keep one year’s rent
on hand. Currently, the fund has
about 50 percent of that amount.
Bridge Communities leaders indicated it would be difficult for their organization and for St. Timothy’s
mentors if we wait three to six
months before resuming this ministry. They said they will work with
us, even reducing the rent for sever-
Boys and Girls Club Star ted using St. Timothy’s classrooms on
Monday, June 6. The program has
had a strong start and it is a successful partnership
Pastor Miller’s Report
Looking forward to having Pastor
Morris join the staff. There are ongoing discussions of responsibilities and
revised job descriptions, with our
staff and council members Bruce
Everhart and Diane Kroeger.
Next meeting is Tuesday, July 15.
Bridge Communities
Needs
St. Timothy’s Bridge Community ministry moves families from
homelessness to independence.
Mentors from St. Timothy have
now led two families through the
two-year program
Now, we are ready to begin
with our third family, but the
Bridge Communities Fund has
slipped below the balance we need
to insure the smooth operation of
the ministry.
Our congregation pays $890
monthly rent (for two years) for
the family we support and mentor,
and we try to keep a balance of one
-year’s rent payments. We currently have about half that amount on
hand.
Please consider a gift to our
Bridge Communities Fund to
maintain this ministry. Make
checks payable to St. Timothy,
with Bridge Communities in the
memo line.
