HIGH VISIBILITY
HIGH VISIBILITY
Djupvik® High Visibility is a collection EN 471/EN ISO 20471 approved protective garments
that covers various requirements in environments where good visibility is required.
The collection is varied and covers different work environments from hot summers to cold
and wet winters.

HIGH VISIBILITY STANDARD
EN 471
3
EN ISO 20471 – erstatter EN 471
Certified and approved garments for protection when the
user needs visually to signal his or her presence to vehicles in
daylight, at night or in poor weather conditions.
Certified and approved garments for protection when the
user needs visually to signal his or her presence to vehicles
in daylight, at night or in poor weather conditions.
High visibility clothing has a fluorescent surface and retroreflective material that meet certification requirements in
three different classes. Class 3 is the highest safety class.
High visibility clothing has a fluorescent surface and retroreflective material that meet certification requirements in
three different classes. Class 3 is the highest safety class. To
comply with class 3, the total area of fluorescent material must
be at least 0.8 m². Garments in class 1 or 2 can be combined
to achieve class 3. Approved combinations will be specified on
the CE label in your high visibility garment.
The symbol means that the garment is certified and approved
according to EN 471. The top number indicates high visibility
class (3 is the highest) and the lower number indicates the
retroreflective category (2 is the highest).
Three high visibility fluorescent colours, yellow, orange and
red, meet the stringent requirements of EN 471. The contrast
colour may be of any colour provided that it passes the EN 471
test, and neither bleeds nor impairs the protection afforded
by the high visibility fabric after wash.
EN 471 certificates will remain valid after the new norm is
published.
The new standard has a new symbol with only one number to
indicate the high visibility class. In the new standard, all reflective tapes must achieve category 2, the highest from EN 471.
The new standard also requires that high visibility fabrics are
tested after wash. This improves safety and ensures that the
wearer has the same protection after as before the garment is
washed.
Three high visibility fluorescent colours, yellow, orange and red,
meet the stringent requirements of EN ISO 20471. The contrast
colour may be any colour provided that it passes the EN ISO
20471 test and neither bleeds nor impairs the protection
afforded by the high visibility fabric after wash.
Minimum area in m2 for approval in accordance with EN 471
and EN ISO 20471
Fluorescent material Reflective material Class 1 Class 2 Class 3
0.14 0.50 0.80
0.10 0.13 0.20
The figures indicate the number of m2 per garment , measured in
the smallest available size, normally size S or size 46. Always see
label in the garment to check what standard garment is tested
and approved for.
It should be performed a safety analysis related to HSE in all
workplaces. The result of this analysis determines which
type protective clothing, and protection class of the individual
employee to use.
Class 1:
Protection class with least fluorescent and reflective material
and therefore the garments that gives the lowest protection.
Garments in this group are used where there is long distance to
the traffic and / or in situations were the user has a good overview of his work environment.
Class 2:
Protection class with significantly more fluorescent material and
something more reflective material than Class 1. Garments in
this group are used where there is some distance from the traffic
and / or the area is clear.
Class 3:
Protection class with the highest amount of fluorescent
material and most reflective, thus providing the best visibility.

SAFETY AND COMFORT
FROM FROM THE OUTER
TO THE INNER
THIRD LAYER
Designed to take the brunt of
the force. Remember that
different fabrics serves
different purposes, and
provides different types of
protection.
LAYERS
Certain environments sets higher demands for
clothing than others. For those working under
humid, windy and cold weather conditions it’s
important to dress appropriately. By using
different layers of clothing, moisture can be
transported away, while wind and water are
excluded. This means that the body stays warm
and dry even in bad weather.
The first layer, the base layer and underwear,
absorbs moisture from the skin and lets it evaporate via the other layers. The second layer traps
small pockets of air in the fabric and between
the garments which allows the moisture from
the first layer to escape, while at the same time
it has an insulating function. The third layer
keeps wind and water away, while still allowing
water vapour to pass through.
SAFETY AND COMFORT
For those working in environments where you
are exposed to flames and heat, it is important
to dress in a way that provides optimum
protection and comfort.
The underwear need to be flame retardant to
limit fire damage as well as moisture absorbing
and wicking. This is important to avoid scalding
by radiant heat, arcing , etc. The second layer
must also be flame retardant, and have excellent
insulating properties. Each layer of flame
retardant clothing, reduces the risk of burn
injuries considerably.
SECOND LAYER
Designed to prevent heat
damage. Use recommended
flameretardent garments for
maximum protection.
FIRST LAYER
Designed to prevent heat
damage. Use recommended
flame retardent underwear
for maximum protection.

the cellulose in the fibres. This creates a strong, durable and protective link that makes
the fabric barely shrink or melt when exposed to heat and flames. All our PYROVATEX®
fabrics are made only from long cotton fibres of high quality. As a result they are lightweight
and comfortable, and feature outstanding durability to wash and wear, ensuring that the
clothing has a long lifetime. The PYROVATEX® treatment makes the fabric to remain flame
retardant even after 200 washes.

PROTEX®
Light and flexible high performance
fabric made from a blend of modified acrylic fibres and high-quality
long fibre cotton.
This unique mix is both soft and
comfortable against the skin and
very effective when things get too
hot.
When flames come into contact
with the fabric, the modacrylic
fibres release a small amount of
protective gas, displacing the
oxygen and extinguishing the
flame.
Furthermore, the fabric can withstand intensive washing without
loss of shape, colour or protective
properties.

PROTECTING PEOPLE SINCE 1853
Devold® was founded in 1853, based on the
idea of protecting people against the
elements. Our first customers were fishermen and other workers that had to endure
the harsh climate along the Norwegian
coast.
Today, more then 160 years later, their goal
is still to make quality garments that withstand wear and tear. Devold® delivers high
quality apparels, combined with functional
and attractive design.
38
Devold® are constantly doing research,
testing and trials and have been developing
underwear designed to protect against cold,
heat, flame and metal splash since 1969.
The products are tested and approved
according to the current European norms
and standards.
DEVOLD® PROTECTION focuses on maintaining a high environmental profile throughout
the production, and several products are
Oeko Tex certified.

UNDERTØY
PYROMAN TEST:
The North Carolina State University, an independant laboratory, which is
testing the degree of burn injury by a flashover, executes this test.
The result of this test is indicating the total damage on the body, specified
by 2nd and 3rd degree burn injury.
We have done The Pyroman test with flame retardant underwear and
ordinary cotton underwear under a flame retardant coverall.
Ordinary underwear
2nd degree burn injury 44%
3rd degree burn injury 8%
Total burn injury 52%
With Devold flame retardant underwear
Flame retardant underwear
2nd degree burn injury 16%
3rd degree burn injury 7%
Total burn injury 23%
At 50 % burn injury, it is great danger of loss of life.
In addition to the burn injuries shown above, skalding injuries may occur
caused by moisture. Your body’s own perspiration often causes burn
injuries. If the perspiration remains on your skin, it may overheat and start
boiling. Because of this, it is very important to use underwear with good
moisture transporting properties. Garments containing synthetic fibres will
melt and cause severe skin injuries.

NORMS AND CERTIFICATIONS
ARC CERTIFICATION
IEC 61482-2, EN 61482
When there is a risk of being exposed to an electric arc, for
example, when servicing equipment in non-arc-safe distribution plants or electrical switchboards, or when working
on high voltage equipment, personnel are recommended to
wear arcapproved protective clothing.
What protection does your clothing need to provide during
an arc blast? The plasma clouds, flames, radiation and metal
splashes from the electrodes hit the fabric during an arc blast.
When this occurs, the fabric has to provide sufficient insulation
to prevent second-degree skin burns. An effective fabric used
in an arc garment must provide shielding against the flame and
metal splashes, as well as insulation from the intense heat.
Electric arc accidents account for approximately 40 % of all
electric accidents. The temperature of an electric arc can be
several thousand degrees. Flammable material close to the arc
ignites easily, causing fires. All our garments are marked with
IEC 61482-2 or EN 61482-1-2. They are certified and approved
in accordance with these standards and are therefore
guaranteed to provide the protection you need.
The garments must cover the whole body. For example, a
jacket and trousers must be worn together with other personal
protective equipment (PPE), including a helmet with protective visor, protective gloves and protective footwear (boots)
to achieve the correct level of protection. There are specific
requirements as to the design of PPE.
Layering is very important; i.e. flame retardant underwear
worn under your electric arc garments will increase protection.
These garments are PPE category III in accordance with the
PPE Directive. An annual control of the garments is carried
out by a notified body. Please see our Article 11 A agreement
on our website.
ARC TEST IEC/EN 61482-1/-1:2009
– “OPEN ARC TEST”
Certified and approved garments appropriate for use in work
environments where there is a risk of electric arcs.
EN 61482-1-1: Protective clothing against the thermal hazards
of an electric arc.
Part 1-1 – Method 1: Determination of the arc rating (ATPV or
EBT50) of flame resistant material or clothing.
ATPV and EBT are both evaluated in the same test, an open
arc test (EN 61482-1-1/ASTM F1959). However, the first result
reached is the reported arc-rating in cal/cm². If the material
has more thermal insulation value than arc tensile strength in
resistance to heat, then it will break open first. If the opposite
is true, the material will allow burns before it breaks open.
The lowest value is the one that is used in the marking of the
garments. Neither is better than the other. In essence,
EBT fabrics are typically more insulating than they are strong
and ATPV materials are stronger than they are insulating.
EBT usually indicates that the garment is a knit and more
comfortable but essentially no less protective for the user.
You should never make a clothing protection decision based
on the fact that clothing has achieved an ATPV or EBT rating.
They are regarded as functional equivalents.
44
Arc Thermal Performance Value (ATPV) is the incident energy
on a material that results in a 50 % probability that sufficient
heat transfer through the specimen is predicted to cause the
onset of second-degree burn injury based on the Stoll Curve;
Arc rating measured cal/cm². The higher the value, the better
the protection.
Energy Breakopen Threshold: (EBT) is the incident energy on
a material that results in a 50 % probability of breakopen.
Breakopen is defined as any open area at least 1.6 cm²; Arc
rating measured in cal/cm². The higher the value, the better
the protection.
Both ATPV and EBT can be tested on single or multiple layers
of material. When you test multiple layers, you will achieve a
higher value then if the fabrics were tested separately because
air trapped between the fabrics also has an insulating and
protective effect.
Heat Attenuation Factor (HAF) is the measurement of the
percentage of energy that is blocked by the material or
material system.
Look in Fristads Kansas Catalogue for styles certified in
accordance to the Open Arc test.
ARC TEST IEC/EN 61482-1-2:2007 –
“BOX TEST”
Certified and approved garments appropriate for use in work
environments where there is a risk of electric arcs.
EN 61482-1-2: Protective clothing against the thermal hazards
of an electric arc.
Part 1-2 – Method 2: Determination of arc protection class of
material and clothing by using a constrained and directed arc.
The garments are tested and evaluated in two classes in the
same test; a box test. (Voltage: 400 V, Duration: 500 ms,
Frequency 50Hz or 60Hz).
Class 1 = 4 kA (arc energy 158 kJ )
Class 2 = 7 kA (arc energy 318 kJ)
The result is approved or not approved and in the test reports
the design is also commented on i.e. that the zipper still works
after exposure.
Working directly with transformers, performing cable work,
working in open electric distribution boxes or on electric home
boxes, potential arc energy is from 240 kJ to 500 kJ or more.
This means that, in some cases, the incident energy is higher
than the class 1 “box test”, which explains why we also test
according to the open arc test to give the garments an
arc-rating in cal/ cm² (ATPV or EBT).
EN 61482-1-2 ("box test") replaces ENV 50354 and EBR IN 033.
EN ISO 11611:2007
Certified and approved garments that protect the user when
welding or carrying out similar work.
The garment’s resistance to flame and flame spread is tested
and approved in accordance with ISO 15025.
The garment’s resistance to small splashes of molten metal is
tested and approved in accordance with ISO 9150.
EN ISO 11611 class 1: The material must be able to withstand
at least 15 drops of molten metal without exceeding an
increase in temperature of 40 degrees Celsius on the reverse
side of the material causing skin burns.
EN ISO 11611 class 2: The material must be able to withstand
at least 25 drops of molten metal without exceeding an
increase in temperature of 40 degrees Celsius on the reverse
side of the material causing skin burns.
Welding also entails the hazards of exposure of skin to ultraviolet (UV) radiation which is produced in all electric arcwelding operations. UV radiation includes UVA, UVB and UVC
radiation in intense bursts. When clothing is exposed to UV,
the fabric degenerates and may not continue to provide
protection. This applies primarily to MIG/MAG welding. When
using these welding techniques, the user is recommended to
wear higher levels of protection, for example, leather sleeves
or a leather apron. The additional clothing prolongs the lifetime of the garments worn beneath and increases the degree
of protection to the wearer. Class 2 garments are designed
resist the degradation caused by these hazards better than
Class 1 garments. Welding garments require regular examination to determine if they need to be replaced.
A simple check for continued UV protection for this type of
clothing is to hold the garment up to the light of a 100 W light
bulb at arm’s length. If light can be seen through the fabric, UV
will penetrate too. If the user reports sunburn-like symptoms,
UVB is penetrating the garment.
To achieve the correct level of protection, the protective
garments must cover the whole body, e.g. both jacket and
trousers must be worn. The garment meets the design
requirements in the standard which seek to reduce the risk of
the garment accumulating welding sparks, etc. For example,
these garments do not have as many pockets or functional
details as other garments. Welding garments are often
used in conjunction with other PPE, e.g. welding apron, helmet
and gloves.
Please see the table on page 49 to choose the right class for
your welding technique.
NORMS AND CERTIFICATIONS
EN 1149-5:2008
Certified and approved garments that protect against electrostatic discharge. Suitable for work where there is a risk of
explosion.
Fabrics are tested according to EN 1149-1 or EN 1149-3. Garments are certified according to EN 1149-5.
This standard requires additional safety measures to protect
the wearer from causing sparks and therefore includes specific
design requirements:
• The garments must permanently cover all material that
does not provide electrostatic protection.
• Thin additions, such as labels and reflectors, must be permanently sewn on. No loose-hanging parts are permitted.
• Elements that conduct electricity (zips, buttons, etc) are
permitted if they are completely covered by the electrostatic protective material.
When using these garments you should be properly earthed
and you must wear adequate footwear, i.e. antistatic footwear
approved according to EN ISO 20344 or EN 20345.
ATEX ENVIROMENT
People working in an ATEX environment often wear flame
retardant clothing. In this environment it is important that the
garments do not charge with static electricity, which can cause
sparks. To make garments antistatic, we add antistatic fibres
to the fabric. To ensure that the design is right and suitable for
use in an ATEX environment, the garments are certified
according to EN 1149-5 together (at least) with EN ISO 11612.
EN ISO 14116:2007
Certified and approved garments that protect the user in the
event of contact with heat and flames. These should be used
in conjunction with EN ISO 11612 or EN ISO 11611 garments.
The garment’s resistance to flame and flame spread is tested
and approved according to ISO 15025.
EN ISO 14116 has three Index, of which Index 3 is highest =
EN ISO 11612 code letter A1.
The standard determines that you must wear Index 3 garments
next to the skin. For this reason, the lining in all our flame
retardant garments is approved in accordance with EN ISO
14116 Index 3.
45
NORMS AND SERTIFICATIONS
EN ISO 11612:2008 A B C D E F
Certified and approved garments that protect the user in the
event of contact with heat and flames.
A1, A2: The garment’s resistance to flame and flame spread is

A1 = SURFACE IGNITION
A2 = EDGE IGNITION
EN 471:2003 + A1:2007
Certified and approved garments for protection when the
user needs visually to signal his or her presence to vehicles in
daylight, at night or in poor weather conditions.
High visibility clothing has a fluorescent surface and retroreflective material that meet certification requirements in
three different classes. Class 3 is the highest safety class.
B: The garment’s protection against convective heat transfer is
tested and approved according to ISO 9151. Convective heat
is the heat that passes through the garment when in contact
with flame. If there is an outer fabric that does not burn, injury
may nevertheless occur due to the heat that forms when the
fabric – and, indirectly, the body – comes into contact with the
flame.
CLASS B1 = 4 – 10 SECONDS
CLASS B2 = 10 – 20 SECONDS
CLASS B3 = 20 SECONDS OR MORE
This symbol means that the garment is certified and approved
according to EN 471. The top number indicates high visibility
class (3 is the highest) and the lower number indicates the
retroreflective category (2 is the highest).
C: The garment’s protection against radiant heat is tested and
approved according to ISO 6942. Low radiant heat over a long
period can result in a risk of injury. The degree to which radiant heat can permeate through the garment must be tested.
CLASS C1 = 7 – 20 SECONDS
CLASS C2 = 20 – 50 SECONDS
CLASS C3 = 50 – 95 SECONDS
CLASS C4 = 95 SECONDS OR MORE
EN 471 certificates will remain valid after the new norm is
published.
D and E: The garment´s protection against molten aluminium
(code D) and molten iron (code E) is tested and approved
according to ISO 9185. Even if the fabric does not start to burn
or decay in contact with the molten metal, you can still get
burns. The test indicates how many molten metal splashes the
fabric can withstand before protection is compromised.
CLASS D1 = 100 – 200 G MOLTEN ALUMINIUM
CLASS D2 = 200 – 350 G MOLTEN ALUMINIUM
CLASS D3 = 350 G OR MORE MOLTEN ALUMINIUM
CLASS E1 = 60 – 120 G MOLTEN IRON
CLASS E2 = 120 – 200 G MOLTEN IRON
CLASS E3 = 200 G OR MORE MOLTEN IRON
F: The garment´s protection against contact heat transfer is
tested and approved according to ISO 12127 at a temperature
of 250° C. Contact heat over a long period can result in risk of
injury. Therefore the time it takes for contact heat to permeate
through the garment must be tested.
CLASS F1 = 5 – 10 SECONDS
CLASS F2 = 10 – 15 SECONDS
CLASS F3 = 15 SECONDS OR MORE
The garments must cover the whole body, i.e. both jacket and
trousers must be worn to achieve the correct level of protection.

EN ISO 20471:2012
– REPLACES EN 471 FROM OCTOBER 2013
Certified and approved garments for protection when the
user needs visually to signal his or her presence to vehicles in
daylight, at night or in poor weather conditions.
EN ISO 20471 is an international standard, which will replace
EN 471.
High visibility clothing has a fluorescent surface and retroreflective material that meet certification requirements in
three different classes. Class 3 is the highest safety class. To
comply with class 3, the total area of fluorescent material
must be at least 0.8 m². Garments in class 1 or 2 can be
combined to achieve class 3. Approved combinations will be
specified on the CE label in your high visibility garment.
The new standard has a new symbol with only one number to
indicate the high visibility class. In the new standard, all reflective tapes must achieve category 2, the highest from EN 471.
The new standard also requires that high visibility fabrics are
tested after wash. This improves safety and ensures that the
wearer has the same protection after as before the garment is
washed.
Three high visibility fluorescent colours, yellow, orange and
red, meet the stringent requirements of EN ISO 20471. The
contrast colour may be any colour provided that it passes the
EN ISO 20471 test and neither bleeds nor impairs the protection afforded by the high visibility fabric after wash.
EN 13034:2005, TYP PB* [6]

the resulting effective thermal insulation for a wearer. It indicates the lowest temperature at which the body can maintain
thermal neutral conditions indefinitely (8 hours) for light and
medium duty tasks. It also indicates the lowest temperature
at which body cooling is sustained at an acceptable level for 1
hour, while the wearer is performing light and medium duty
tasks. EN 342 also indicates the air permeability.

NORMS AND SERTIFICATIONS
MATERIALS
Flame retardant fabrics are used to make garments harder to
ignite and to impedeflame spread. If a fabric is described as
“flame retardant”, this does not mean, however, that the fabric
is not flammable. The purpose of flame retardancy is to halt
the combustion process in various ways. Most synthetic fibres
ignite easily and then melt. Cotton, on the other hand, is harder to ignite but burns for longer and more fully. In principle,
wool is not flammable, in tests, it can withstand contact with a
glowing cigarette without starting to burn. Due to the properties of these different materials, we have developed different
collections of garments to meet different purposes. We have
developed collections in inherently flame retardant fabrics and
in flame retardant treated fabrics. We also make inherently
flame retardant underwear with a wool base.
LOI VALUE
Limited Oxygen Index (LOI) measures the lowest oxygen
content at which the material burns by itself after being
ignited. Air contains approximately 21 % oxygen. Easily
flammable materials have a LOI value of about 20 % or lower.
One example is cotton, which has an LOI of 16 – 18 %. The
lowest limit for fabrics that are difficult to ignite is about 25 %,
which is roughly the case for wool.
Wool 25 %
Flame retardant treated cotton 28 %
Flame retardant treated wool 30–32 %
Meta-aramid 30 %
Modacrylic 33 %

INHERENT FLAME RETARDANT FABRICS
– MODACRYLIC OR ARAMIDES
The unique molecular structure of the yarn fibres makes them
naturally flame retardant without chemical treatment. The
fibre contains antimony salts for highest FR performance which
stops the spread and continuation of burning. Inherently
flame retardant fibres minimise burn injuries by creating a
protective barrier between the heat source and the wearer’s
skin. And as the flame protection is not applied as a coating
but is rather an integral part of the fibre structure, it cannot
be washed or worn away. The protective properties are
permanent and retained throughout the lifetime of the
garment. No further treatments or re-treatments are required.
Inherently flame retardant fabrics are suitable for either
domestic or industrial laundering.
Requirements and test methods for fabrics and seams of
protective clothing against the influence of precipitation (rain,
falling snow), fog and ground humidity. Resistance to water
penetration and water vapour resistance are measured.
x = Resistance to water penetration (1–3)
y = Water vapour resistance (1–3)

NORMER OG SERTIFISERINGER
MODACRYLIC
– PROTEX® OG PROTAL FIBRE MIXES
Our Flamestat collection is made from a light and flexible
high-performance inherently flame retardant fabric, made
from a blend of modified acrylic fibres, long fibre cotton,
strong polyamide fibres and antistatic fibres. This unique mix is
both soft and comfortable against the skin and at the same
time strong and durable for workwear, providing effective,
long-term protection. Modacrylic fabrics shed metal electrode
splashes extremely effectively. This prevents heat transmission
burns since no hot metal pieces remain on the fabric in event
of an arc accident. The fabric is cotton-like in appearance and
is inherently flame retardant. It provides excellent heat insulation and prevents second-degree burns. It is also quick-drying
and has excellent moisture management properties. When
flames come into contact with the fabric, the modacrylic fibres
release a small amount of protective gas, displacing the oxygen
and extinguishing the flame. The fabric does not melt or drip
onto the skin as it creates a strong protective char barrier.
Superior quality, comfort, strength and protection in one great
package.
Our Flamestat collection is tested and approved for industrial
laundry according to ISO 15797 and is also OEKO-TEX®
certified.
The difference between our GORE-TEX ® (GXH) fabric and
other inherently flame retardant fabrics is that GXH has an
anti-static membrane, while the rest have antistatic fibres in
the weave. GORE-TEX ® fabrics is also wind and waterproof as
well as breathable.
ARAMIDES - NOMEX®
An inherently flame retardant and temperature resistant fabric
made from special meta-aramid fibre yarn. The fabric is made
up of aramid rings linked by aramid bonds. It is non-combustible in air and will not melt or drip. When exposed to intense
heat, the fabric carbonizes and thickens, forming a virtually
impenetrable barrier. NOMEX® offers permanent protection
that does not wash or wear away. In fact, durability tests
conducted by DuPont show no deterioration of fabric strength,
dimension stability or appearance – even after 200 washes.
FLAME RETARDANT TREATED FABRICS
– PROBAN® OR PYROVATEX®
These include cotton and polyester fabrics and cotton fabrics
treated with flame retardant chemicals that inhibit or suppress
the combustion process. Flame retardant treated fabrics are
treated with a flame retardant chemical that forms a bond at
the molecular level with the cellulose in the cotton fibres. Our
Flame Visibility collection is made from flame retardant treated fabrics. When flame comes into contact with the fabric, the
fabric releases a small amount of gas, displacing the oxygen
and extinguishing the flame. The fabric does not melt or drip
onto the skin, as it creates a protective char barrier. These fabrics are durable provided that they are washed in accordance
with our instructions. Flame retardant treated fabrics can be
domestically or industrially laundered.

UNDERWEAR
Our underwear is made from wool, merino wool, Lenzing FR®
or blends of these. All wool blends are pre-shrunk and
machine washable. Merino is a type of wool with long, thin
fibres, that produces very soft, comfortable garments that
feel soft against the skin. Merino wool is also naturally flame
retardant. To make the underwear even more flame retardant,
the merino wool is often mixed with Lenzing FR® – a viscose
fibre that is inherently flame retardant, i.e. the effect does not
wash off or wear away. The wool is warm, while Lenzing FR®
increases protection and comfort.
LEATHER PRODUCTS
We also have welding aprons in split leather, which can
naturally withstand welding sparks and can prolong the lifetime of your welding clothes.
USEFUL INFORMATION
LAYERING
• Flame retardancy prevents flames from spreading. However,
heat can spread through the garment causing the skin to burn.
If you wear flame-retardant trousers, they will protect against
heat for a certain period. The period of time during which
you are protected is doubled if you also wear flame-retardant
underwear. If you work in a cold environment and wear lined
flame-retardant garments together with flame-retardant underwear, you are protected for even longer. The same applied
to electric arc certified garments; Wearing flame-retardant
underwear or several layers will increase protection.
• The garments should be worn buttoned. Protection is
impaired if the garment is worn in combination with
non-flame-retardant garments.
• Before putting on your garment, check that it is not
damaged. As a wearer, you should also make sure you know
how to take the garment off quickly in the event of an
accident.
• We recommend that welders use a leather welding apron to
protect other welding garments from sparks.
WASHING INSTRUCTIONS
• We recommend industrial laundry for flame-retardant garments to ensure that full protection is maintained. If there is
no industrial laundry available, flame-retardant garments must
always be washed according to the washing instructions on the
garment.
• Flame-retardant garments must not be washed with soap detergents or fabric softeners and must not be chlorine bleached.
Only synthetic detergents may be used to retain the protective
properties.
• Garments with reflective tape should be washed inside out.
GENERAL
• Garments that are dirty, wet or sweaty provide less flame
protection.
• After a flame retardant garment is exposed to flames, it is ruined. Even if the damage is not visible, the fabric is weakened
and holes will form when it is washed.
• Garments may only be patched using a fabric that at least
meets the requirements of the standard for the garment. For
example, a garment certified according to EN ISO 11611 may
only be patched with a fabric that meets EN ISO 11611
requirements.
• Transfers and embroideries which are tested against flame
spread may be applied.
• For high visibility garments (certified according to EN 471/EN
ISO 20471), large transfers and embroidery are not permitted
as the area of fluorescent material must be of a specific size to
achieve the class for which the garment is certified.
•The reflective tape on our flame retardant garments is flame
retardant and approved according to EN ISO 14116, EN 469
and EN 471/EN ISO 20471.
• All the linings in our flame retardant garments are approved
according to EN ISO 14116.
• None of our products contain PBB (polybrominated biphenyl)
or PBDE (polybrominated diphenyl ethers).
• Where flame retardant clothing is concerned, different occupational groups have different needs.
OCCUPATIONS
WELDERS
This group needs garments that are certified and approved
according to EN ISO 11611. Garments that comply with this
standard protect the wearer during welding or similar work.
This standard demands greater protection against welding
sparks. Garments suitable for welding have fewer pockets and
functional details than other garments. Welding clothes are
often used in conjunction with other PPE, e.g. welding apron,
helmet and gloves.

ELECTRICIANS
This group needs garments certified and approved according
to EN ISO 11612 and electric arc tested according to IEC 614822/EN 61482. Garments that comply with EN ISO 11612 protect
the user from contact with heat and flames. Protective
clothing tested according to IEC 61482 protects against the
thermal hazards that may occur in electric arc accidents.
The test does not assess the effects of other factors, such as
noise, light, increased pressure, hot oil, electric shocks, the
consequences of physical or mental shocks, or toxic
substances. An ATPV/EBT value of at least 8 cal/cm² is the
general guideline. If the risk is higher, we recommend that the
end user wears several layers of protective clothing, i.e. flame
retardant underwear under the electric arc certified garments
or garments in a fabric with a higher arcrating (higher ATPV or
EBT). In both cases, the garments solution should be worn
with other safety equipment i.e. safety helmet with protective
visor, protective gloves and protective footwear (boots) to
ensure the right level of protection. For this group of
professionals, it is also important to wear the right type of
underwear. Shirts, vests and underpants made of synthetic
fibres (polyamide, polyester and acrylic) that are not flame
retardant will melt in response to the heat that occurs during
an arc accident. Even if the outer garments are certified to
IEC 61482/EN 61482, synthetic underwear must not be used.
The outer layer of an electrician’s protective clothing must
therefore be made from arc-tested fabrics (EN 61482), and the
remaining layers must pass a flame test (EN ISO 11612 or EN
ISO 14116 Index 3).
OIL INDUSTRIAL WORKERS
As they often work in an ATEX environment, this group
(refinery workers, offshore workers, tanker drivers) must wear
garments certified and approved in accordance with EN ISO
11612 and EN 1149-5. Garments approved in accordance with
EN ISO 11612 protect the user in the event of contact with
heat and flames. Garments that comply with EN 1149-5
protect the user against sudden discharges of electrostatic
energy and are worn where there is a risk that static sparks
may ignite flammable substances, such as gas and oil. The
design specification for these garments stipulates that
conductive materials, such as metal zips and buttons, must
be concealed. In addition to certification according to EN ISO
11612 and EN 1149-5, standards EN 343 and EN 471/
EN ISO 20471 are also important for this group.
RAIL WORKERS
This group needs garments certified and approved in
accordance with EN ISO 11612 and EN 471/EN ISO 20471.
Garments approved in accordance with EN ISO 11612 protect
the user in the event of contact with heat and flames.
Garments approved in accordance with EN 471/EN ISO 20471
make the wearer visible to their surroundings in daylight, at
night and in poor weather conditions. Some workers in this
group also need garments certified in accordance with EN ISO
11611. Garments under this standard protect the user during
welding or similar work. The protective clothing is intended
to protect the wearer from small drops of molten metal, brief
contact with flames and UV radiation. This standard provides
greater protection from welding sparks, which is why these
garments have fewer pockets and functional details than other
garments. Please refer to the guide to selecting welders’
clothing under Welders.
