TURKISH A COMPLIMENTARY COPY FROM TET ISSUE: 02 MARCH 2014 &White Goods PRODUCTS AWARDED FOR THEIR DESIGNS The Biggest Factory in Europe For software export, the goal is 1 billion dollar! Award winning designs and designers A “Smart” Turkish Project at Solar Decathlon Edito >>> Dr.Fatih Kemal Ebiçlioğlu ELECTRICAL ELECTRONICS AND SERVICES EXPORTERS’ ASSOCIATION (TET) Chairman of the Board Welcome to the new edition of Turkish Electronic and White Goods; The last months have been a very busy time for the ELECTRICAL ELECTRONICS AND SERVICES EXPORTERS’ ASSOCIATION (TET). First of all, we began preparations for the TET R&D Project Spring event, with the aim of bringing representatives of industry, universities, R&D centres, technopark workers and researchers together in order to turn creative ideas and unique projects into reality. For this edition of the event we have received the support of Michigan State University in the US and the TET R&D Project Spring, which will be held on 26 March 2014 at the Istanbul Congress Centre (ICC), has taken an international dimension through collaboration with EUREKA. Our preparatory work continues for the tenth edition of the İMMİB Industrial Design Competition, to be held in 2014. The themes of the competition have been determined as “Industrial Kitchen Equipment” for the metal category, “Rattan Design Plastic Goods Sets” for the plastics category and “Design for a Sustainable Environment” for the small electric appliances category. Perhaps the most significant category of the competition, however, will be the Concept 2014 since, with the theme of Educational Toy Design, it can influence the future of children not only from Turkey but also from the entire world! This alone is enough to get all of us to look forward to the competition date of 19 March 2014 with excitement. For TET, 2013 was also a year full of fairs, trade mission visits and projects. First of all, within TET’s national participation strategy, 46 companies participated in the Middle East Electricity Fair in Dubai. Turkey will again take part in the Dubai Middle East Fair from 11-13 February 2014 with 52 companies. We promoted the Turkish electrical and electronics sector at WETEX 2013 with informative documents from TET members. We closely followed. USA, the world’s biggest cable importer with a market volume of 5 billion dollars. We sent our trade missions to New York and Chicago in March 2013 and to Houston and Dallas from 10-17 November 2013. With the aim of increasing our electrical and electronics exports, we visited nine different countries and participated in five important trade missions, developing important collaborations with Morocco, Algeria, Vietnam, Thailand, Australia, Chile, Peru, Angola and South Africa. TURKHAS, established under the leadership of TET and composed of 21 white goods producers, was in Brazil from 24-29 November 2013 in the first TURKHAS trade mission. We expect to hear even more good news from our white goods producers in the near future. &White Goods Turkish Electronic PUBLISHER ELECTRICAL ELECTRONICS AND SERVICES EXPORTERS’ ASSOCIATION (TET) REPRESENTATIVE OF THE PUBLISHER Coşkun Kırlıoğlu, on behalf of TET HEADQUARTERS / MANAGEMENT DIŞ TİCARET KOMPLEKSİ - A BLOK Çobançeşme Mevkii, Sanayi Cad. 34197 Yenibosna - Bahçelievler/ İstanbul Turkey Tel: +90 212 454 00 00 Fax: +90 212 454 00 01 www.immib.org.tr [email protected] BOARD OF PUBLISHING Fatih Kemal Ebiçlioğlu, Atilla Eren, Hüsamettin Kavi, Mehmet Kavaklıoğlu, Sami Yılmaz, Melih Reçber, Coşkun Kırlıoğlu, Ümit Koşkan, Hamit Özgenç, Kutad Alptürkan, Kübra Kudun Güner, Murat Tuncel PRODUCTION&PUBLISHING Maya Artı Maya Artı Yayıncılık İletişim ve Tasarım Hizmetleri Ltd. S ince its foundation in 1993 DE-KA has, in what could be considered a short period of time, become Europe’s biggest power cord producer. Today the company continues to develop confidently along this same path. De-Ka currently works for nine of Europe’s ten largest white goods producers, and exports to 28 countries in five continents. We spoke about the success of De-Ka with the company’s founding partners Atilla Eren and Coşkun Demirsoy. COULD YOU TELL US THE STORY OF HOW DE-KA CAME INTO BEING? We are friends from university; we studied electrical engineering together. We founded De-Ka Elektroteknik in 1993. We have provided services to the white goods sector for 32 years, 12 of those professionally. During the early years our main aim was to establish local production of electrical components that were mainly imported in the sector. As part of this vision, from the first year that De-Ka was established, we have focused on our engineering and production strength by creating a professional structure using our experience in the sector and our key industry support, and during this time we brought many new developments to the sector. Today our company, in its 20th year, has reached the position of Europe’s biggest power cord producer. It is in this way that we offer our thanks to our key industries that have provided valuable contributions in the creation of our corporate culture. 10 > Europe Interview: Yaşar Burak Meriç HAVE YOU INTRODUCED ANY NEW DEVELOPMENTS TO THE SECTOR? • 1993 – The first international certificate (VDE) to be awarded in Turkey for electrical components, • 1996 – The first ISO 9000 Quality Management System and 14001 Environmental Management System certificates in the sector, • 1999 - The first TSE-HAR Brand (CENELEC Harmonization Document) to be awarded for cables in Turkey, • 2012 – First Turkish brand to be a European sectorial leader. WHAT KIND OF PRODUCTS DO YOU SUPPLY AND TO WHICH COMPANIES? WHICH COUNTRIES DO YOU EXPORT TO? We generally produce power cords, cables and electrical components for the White Goods and Consumer Electronics sectors. With our wide product range and international product certification, we work with nine of Europe’s ten biggest white goods producers. Other than Europe we also export to markets in Australia, South Africa, Argentina, Singapore and Israel. We aim to enter the North and South American markets in the near future. We export to a total of 28 countries on five continents. > 11 Enterprise >>> WHICH INTERNATIONALLY RECOGNIZED STANDARDS CERTIFICATIONS DO YOU HOLD? As countries generally have their own standards organizations and norms, the items we produce have certification from the relevant country. The national certificates that we currently hold are: CERTIFICATE COUNTRY TSE Turkey VDE Germany KEMA Netherlands ASTA Great Britain SABS Rep. of South Africa IRAM Argentina STANDART SII Israel QUEENSLAND Australia IMQ Italy SEV Switzerland WHICH PROCEDURES DO YOU FOLLOW DURING PRODUCTION? WHICH CRITERIA DO YOU PRIORITIZE? With a production capacity of over 50 million, we are Europe’s biggest power cord producer. Having reached this point, our company plays an important role as a solution partner for our customers. Our corporate culture, our scale-economy production structure and the high level production technology that we use and our position as an expert supplier have made our company a respected firm with a high brand value. Our company follows social responsibility and environmental policies and is committed to following the continuously changing and developing environmental, health and safety rules. HOW DID THE GLOBAL ECONOMIC CRISIS AFFECT YOU? HOW WAS BUSINESS THIS YEAR COMPARED TO LAST YEAR? WERE YOUR EXPECTATIONS MET? The global crisis in the world financial markets that began in 12 > 2008 affected the whole world and every sector, including our sector and our company; however, thanks to the country’s dynamic growth, we overcame the worrying impacts of the crisis with no lasting damage. While we are on this topic we will never forget the negative stance of the private banking sector and the negative conditions they created in the markets during that time; we will also never forget the absolutely vital export credit support that the Turkish Eximbank provided at that time to its exporters. We owe a debt of gratitude to the Turkish Eximbank for this. Today the effects of the crisis continue in Europe. We are directly affected by the fact that Europe, our export market, is in crisis; however, we managed to overcome the negative aspects of this situation by developing our market diversity and competitiveness, and we managed to achieve growth. In the first ten months of 2013 our company, in line with our aims, grew by 25% in quantity compared to 2012.This figure equals 18% in terms of turnover. WHERE WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE YOUR COMPANY IN THE NEXT FIVE YEARS? Our aim for the next five years is to move from European leader in the sector to world leader. To achieve this vision we are planning company restructuring and investments. During this period, the most important factor will be for the country to show steady growth. WHAT ARE YOUR PREDICTIONS FOR THE FUTURE OF THE SECTOR? In recent years the global economy has been undergoing rapid changes and as such in the white goods sector global players are entering different markets, and we are witnessing many brand and company takeovers, closures and mergers. While the winds of change are blowing throughout the world, the Turkish white goods sector, an increasingly important sector in the country, has, with a production output reaching 25 million, become Europe’s white goods production centre, and this position is strengthened every year. The contribution of every intermediate goods producer and expert subsidiary industry to the success that has been achieved in the sector is huge. In order to ensure sustainable growth in the sector, a move to high value-added products is very important. R&D/innovation/university/ industry collaborations and key industry/subsidiary industry partnerships are essential and have brought important developments in this area. On the other hand, in a sector where export figures and markets are diversified, our companies face serious risks. The increase in diversification of export risk insurance instruments is of particular importance for SMEs that export to foreign markets and face different risks. > 13 Design >>> A designer since his school days WHILE ATIL KIZILBAYIR’S DESIGN CONCEPT IS FOUNDED ON BASIC PRINCIPLES, HE IS ALSO BRAVE ENOUGH TO FACE THE CHALLENGES OF A DIFFICULT AND OFTEN EMOTIONAL PROFESSION. IT IS WHAT MAKES ALL DIFFERENCE. A by: Yaşar Burak Meriç tıl Kızılbayır is so committed to his profession that he started designing during high school – not for a living, just for the sake of creating. Design entered his life on the sly, to a great extent thanks to his family, who are also involved in design. Kızılbayır is brave enough to face all the challenges of what can be emotional work. Having studied at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, Kızılbayır has made a name for himself as a designer. His project for a sliding toaster entitled Fırrın – probably his most well-known work – came first out of 170 entries in a design contest organized by İMMİB (General Secretariat of Istanbul Mineral and Metals Exporters’ Association). The toaster, produced by Arzum, will soon be available for sale both in Turkey and abroad, and has received a great deal of positive feedback. In this interview Kızılbayır discusses his process, design philosophy, and approach to products. SIMPLE, INNOVATIVE AND CREATIVE “The starting point for my designs depends on basic design principles. Although this places the product on a firm foundation, what makes the difference is the way you perceive 14 > My Motto “Everything that we see and hear, including the things we can’t perceive, has a form. I am not only talking about objects or photographs. A melody, a film, even an idea has a form. Everything has a form And a form follows its its own creator and every form can be designed.” the design criteria. When you detach yourself from the piece and look at the criteria that are set up via correct evaluations, you will see that you haven’t designed what needs to be designed but that you have determined what it is actually needed. I am sure that all my colleagues produce really valuable designs, but what separates me is the fact that I demonstrate a design philosophy that reflects a new point of view, creating a simple, innovative product that puts forward simple solutions with new functions. Arzum was a judge at that year’s contest, which meant they could contact me right away with their intention to produce my design. Thus began the process that led to my design appearing on shelves today. The exciting period leading up to the production stage is now replaced by a different kind of excitement. I’m looking forward to finding out how my design will be received in Turkey and around the world. It is possible to say that the road is less tough for designers and the industry as a whole today.”According to Kızılbayır, the kitchen today is much more than simply a room in which you cook a pot of stew. Considering the amount of time people, especially housewives, spend in the kitchen – and the transformation of cooking from a chore into a hobby – Kızılbayır certainly seems to be correct. FROM FURNITURE TO TOYS, KITCHEN PRODUCTS TO GLASSWARE “These days, when we think about the kitchen we picture a fun place full of many decorative products. As a designer I believe that we still live in the age of invention. Since they took their first steps on this earth, human beings have needed to eat in order to survive. But the products and utensils that are used for food preparation today were invented after the industrial revolution. In recent years, companies like Tefal and Electrolux have combined design and innovation. This is exactly what needs to be done. The kitchen is a rich and fun source for a designer, and I don’t think any designer would be able to leave a kitchen without a new idea forming in their minds.” So far Kızılbayır has designed products for a variety of industries, from furniture to toys, kitchen products to glassware. This diversity has made him a stronger and more dynamic designer. “Getting to know different materials, different functions and different production methods are a few of the things that a designer should do in order to improve. You need to be open to all the new developments and innovations as much as possible. Most of all you need to be hungry for it.” > 15 Design >>> BECOMING AN INTERNATIONAL POWER “I believe that there are no limits to design and in my work I like to see function and design in equal measure,” says Kızılbayır. “Although the subject of the object you’re designing is essential, I always feel a great deal of incompleteness in a design that has no function. A designer may choose to fill that gap by creating a story for that design. And yes, a story behind a product can add value to the design. But I believe that attaching a story to a design is a mistake that many designers make. A good design is which emerging along with a story.” Kızılbayır thinks that Turkey still has a long way to go in terms of design, but he is nevertheless fairly hopeful about recent developments. “Until a few years ago, the laws protecting the ideas and work of designers were really insufficient,” he says. “It is clear that we are in a period of development, a period that we cannot avoid. In order to become an international power, to forge our own brands, to create added value and to strengthen our economy, we need to produce. We need to introduce new things to the world. Government agencies and industrial actors all know that the first step lies in design.” In his opinion, though, this knowledge is not enough. “If you do not make progress, everything you have learned so far is totally pointless. We need to speed up. Moving from the days in which investing in design required courage, to days in which projects that do not involve design are considered risky, is not actually so difficult.” Mool Edge This product operates on the same principle as Fırrın. It is designed to diversify the potential customer base with an alternative form that uses a different color, material and shape than Fırrın. The aim is to introduce the “sliding toaster” concept to a wider audience. 16 > Kefit This product provides a simple way to prepare ‘kefir’ at home, with an integral design. The product has low production costs and combines multiple steps into one simple system by using the thermos principle without the need for electricity. Kefit transforms ‘kefir’ from a regional specialty into an everyday product, presenting it in a modern way to anyone interested. >> “UNTIL A FEW YEARS AGO, THE LAWS PROTECTING THE IDEAS AND WORK OF DESIGNERS WERE REALLY INSUFFICIENT”. Seriss This product aims to provide stain-cleaning technology by complementing the washing machines available at launderettes. With Seriss, clients can remove tough stains from their clothes while waiting for their regular laundry to be washed. >> “I BELIEVE THAT THERE ARE NO LIMITS TO DESIGN AND IN MY WORK I LIKE TO SEE FUNCTION AND DESIGN IN EQUAL MEASURE”. Yoğun This specially-designed glass freezes the moment that a drop of the drink that represents the brand comes into contact with a surface, underlining the power of that drop. > 17 Enterprise >>> “We have reached European standards and more…” 18 > ” SAYAT ÇAKIR, SALES EXECUTIVE OF GENÇLER KABLO, SAYS THAT THE COMPANY HAS EXCEPTIONALLY MODERN FACILITIES FOR EUROPE AND TURKEY. E stablished in 1979 on an area of 150 square metres, GENÇLER KABLO has put its name to important successes in both the white goods subsidiary industry and in cable production in its modern facilities in Eskişehir. Gençler Kablo exports throughout the world in the white goods sector, while also gaining a reputation for itself, particularly in Europe, in the cable sector. Knowing that it is impossible to be competitive without changing and developing, Gençler Kablo’s new objective is the continent of America. We hear about Gençler Kablo’s success story from the company’s Sales Executive, Sayat Çakır. COULD YOU TELL US THE STORY OF GENÇLER KABLO? Gençler Kablo was founded in 1979 as a personal enterprise of Faruk Çakır, on an enclosed area of 150m2 in the Çağlayan district of Istanbul. The aim at that time was to offer low resistance and coaxial cable services to the domestic market. When the white goods sector began to work with subsidiary industry at the end of the 1980s, it was the chance for Gençler Kablo to branch out and focus on the white goods sector. > 19 Enterprise >>> THE BUDGET OF EUROPEAN PRODUCERS FOR TECHNOLOGICAL INVESTMENT IS NOT AS LARGE AS OURS. developed through experience. Like a living organism, these are constantly being updated and revised according to the conditions of the time. You cannot be competitive without changing and developing. Our main criteria is to have confidence in the product that we send. For this reason we invest in human resources and technology. By maintaining our existing quality we can respond to the needs of our company and our customers in terms of satisfaction. WHICH INTERNATIONALLY RECOGNIZED STANDARDS CERTIFICATIONS DO YOU HOLD? WHERE ARE YOU IN TERMS OF EUROPEAN UNION STANDARDS? As well as the TSE and TSE HAR certificates, we also have standards certification from world-recognised institutes such as the VDE from Germany, ISO – again awarded by the VDE Institute, KEMA from the Netherlands, SII from Israel and the TSEK. Now what we need to look at is where the EU standards lie according to our production. As companies that import technology from Europe we make a great deal of investment and bring this know-how to our country. The budget of European producers for technological investment is not as large as ours. This enables the products produced in our country to meet European standards and even for us to find ourselves at the top levels of the existing index. With an investment of around 5 million euro in 2013, we completed the establishment of a facility of a quality rarely seen in Europe. In the near future we plan to obtain the UL standard and export to the continent of America. WHAT KIND OF PRODUCTS DO YOU HAVE IN YOUR PRODUCT RANGE? Although at the beginning our main field of activity was cables, with the investments made in the PVC Granule facility in 1991 and the power cord production facility in 2001, we now carry out production under three main categories. We produce a wide range of low voltage cable products, with single core and twisted wire products, and in terms of PVC we produce customer-focused products resistant to 70, 90 and 105 degrees. Although our power cord department may appear to be our youngest branch, thanks to investments made in this area Gençler Kablo has one of the rare facilities of its kind in Turkey and in Europe. At the beginning we produced European-plug power cords and then we started to produce British and Israeli-plug power cords. As such we can respond to different criteria. COULD YOU TELL US ABOUT THE PROCESSES YOU FOLLOW DURING PRODUCTION? During the production process, as well as the ISO 9001:2008 criteria, we also follow our internal procedures that have been 20 > WHY SHOULD COMPANIES CHOOSE YOUR PRODUCTS? WHAT SETS YOU APART FROM THE COMPETITION? Many criteria, such as price, quality, familiarity, bilateral relations, brand recognition, can be the reason for choosing a certain company. As we are not producers of finished products that address key industry or the end user we do not have the possibility of reaching a very wide audience in terms of recognition or brand value, or of creating awareness. However, in all the areas in which we work, we have one characteristic that sets us apart: mentality. We carry out all of our activities according to the philosophy “make changes, be flexible, teach.” It is precisely because of this vision that we are one of the family businesses that have remained open since 1979. DO YOU CARRY OUT R&D BEFORE PRODUCING A PRODUCT? HOW MUCH OF YOUR ANNUAL BUDGET DO YOU SET ASIDE FOR R&D? We are constantly working to create the designs of our products and user-friendly models. We do not have an R&D department but for years we have worked on our projects in collaboration with two R&D offices in Germany and China. I would have liked to speak in detail about our projects but as these are going to be innovative products, particularly for the white goods sector, I can’t give any information. As a company we mainly work with Europe. Our competitiveness in terms of logistics and price range continues to improve our position in the European market. HOW DID THE GLOBAL ECONOMIC CRISIS AFFECT YOU? HOW WAS BUSINESS THIS YEAR COMPARED TO LAST YEAR? WERE YOUR EXPECTATIONS MET? The year of the crisis was our year of investment. In 2009 we began our investment in Eskişehir, which was completed in 2010. For companies like us, crises can, under certain conditions, be an opportunity. The explosion of the crisis caused a fall in our investment costs. Of course we made losses in terms of turnover but this remained small next to our gains. As things stand today, since 2010 our graph has shown a rising trend. This was also the reason that we made another investment in 2013 after just having come out of an investment in 2010. Our end of year results were better than expected, and this was another source of happiness for us. >> “WITHIN THE NEXT FIVE YEARS WE WOULD LIKE TO SEE OURSELVES AS A COMPANY THAT PROVIDES SERVICES IN DIFFERENT COUNTRIES AS A GLOBAL SUPPLIER AND THAT HAS MADE IT ONTO TURKEY’S EXPORT HONOURS LIST.” WHAT IS YOUR ANNUAL PRODUCTION CAPACITY? With our new investments we have an annual installed capacity that can produce 550 metres of single core cable, 140 million metres of sheathed cable and 19 million power cords. HAVE YOU ACHIEVED ANY FIRSTS IN THE SECTOR? In 1995 we were the first company to obtain the German VDA standards certification. This is a very big success story. This certificate was obtained under the initiative and hard work of Janin Çakır, one of the company’s owners, and when we consider the conditions of the time it was very difficult. Following that we were the first company in Turkey to produce PVC cables that are heat resistant up to 105 degrees and to have those products approved by the German VDE institute. WHICH COUNTRIES DO YOU EXPORT TO? This question actually has two answers. We export our white goods key industry products to countries throughout the world. WHAT ARE YOUR OBJECTIVES FOR 2014? WHERE WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE YOUR COMPANY IN THE NEXT FIVE YEARS? I would have liked to say “new year, new hopes” but our projects and commitments for 2014 are already more than just hopes as we have already almost completed them all. This means that we are using the correct strategies. Today your innovativeness, technological infrastructure and continuity are as important as your brand value. As a subsidiary industry this positive feedback from our customers has confirmed our strategy for the new year and the following years as one of “continued growth”. In the shortterm, within the next five years we would like to see ourselves as a company that provides services in a different country as a global supplier and that has made it onto Turkey’s export honours list. WHAT ARE YOUR PREDICTIONS FOR THE FUTURE OF THE SECTOR? The sector is constantly developing and moving forward. When we look at data for key industry production, we can see that our 2012 exports increased by 24% compared to 2010. As a country that entered the sector 50 years after production began elsewhere in the world, the fact that we quickly became Europe’s biggest manufacturing base for cables is proof of our strength in the sector. But we mustn’t forget that countries such as Italy, Germany and France were once the main industrial bases in this area. Countries such as Bulgaria, Romania and Poland coming up behind us have the potential to take this sector from our hands. For this reason steps must be taken within the State-Key Industry-Subsidiary Industry triangle and future projections must be carefully drawn up in order to make long-term calculations. However, as long as no major mistakes are made, I believe that over the next 10-year period the Turkish white goods industry will maintain its position. > 21 Design >>> that combines art and engineering is industrial design!” METE MORDAĞ IS AN ARTIST WHO, FOR THE PAST TEN YEARS, HAS CREATED INDUSTRIAL DESIGNS IN EVERY POSSIBLE FIELD. MORDAĞ DESIGN IS AN ASTONISHING WINDOW DISPLAY FOR THIS ARTIST. METE MORDAĞ’S STORY STARTS WITH PAINTING, AND FOR THIS WE HAVE HIS GRANDFATHER TO THANK! M ete Mordağ was born in Istanbul in 1977. After graduating from the Alman Lisesi (Deutsche Schule) and Boğaziçi University Mechanical Engineering, he received his master’s degree in Industrial Design from the University of Southwest Sydney. Upon his return to Turkey in 2005, he worked for Vitra and T-Design. It was at T-Design where, in the artist’s words, he “learnt the craft.” WHAT LED YOU TO INDUSTRIAL DESIGN? Actually, it was painting. My grandfather was a painter, and I am crazy about mathematics and painting. I really liked studying mechanical engineering, but the smell of oil paint... There is a unique smell in the house of someone who paints 22 > with oil paints, and this smell never leaves your mind. I grew up around the smell of oil paint, and then studied mechanical engineering. The only field that combined art and engineering was industrial design. WHICH CORPORATIONS HAVE YOU MADE INDUSTRIAL DESIGNS FOR SO FAR? I worked with Prima Nova and Arzum in kitchen and household products. I draw Alurad radiators and design diving computers and watches for Innovasub, which designs scuba diving equipment. I also offer a lot of technical support to companies like Asteknik. As a company we also work with Lugano Glass Systems. We design garden furniture, mainly pergolas, for Anton Müller. We also offer designs for Palmiye, the leader of pergola systems in Turkey. DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE WITHIN THE SECTORS YOU DESIGN FOR? Diving... I am also a scuba diver. Bogaziçi Scuba Diving Club, BÜSAS, was one of the most special communities I have ever been a member of. I was president of that club from 2000 to 2001. Murat Egi, the CEO of Innovasub, was president for 10 years before me. When Mr. Egi said to me, “I’m producing these kinds of products, let’s design something together,” I started working with them and produced an iPhone cover that is also a diving watch, actually a kind of diving computer. Today diving computers cost somewhere between 500-3000 Euros... But smart phones have such powerful processors that it is possible to add different functions to them. I stepped in when it came to the cover, which needed to be designed in order to enable it to be used underwater. With the added accessories, the iPhone became a diving computer that informs the diver of every movement he or she needs to make. WHAT KIND OF DESIGNS DO YOU GENERALLY MAKE? I like to design products that people can use, like chairs, or tools such as graters, because it gives me an idea of where to “draw the line.” WHICH OF YOUR DESIGNS HAS RECEIVED THE MOST POSITIVE FEEDBACK? The bathroom cabinet I designed for PrimaNova. After this product was released, a Spanish company – PrimaNova’s largest competitor – had to remove a similar product from the market. Aesthetics aside, PrimaNova put a product on the market with the same height and the same features as the product from the Spanish company, but added a mirror. As a consumer choosing between two bathroom cabinets with the same function and price, wouldn’t you choose the one with the mirror? SO WAS IT SOLD BECAUSE IT WAS THE “SAME CABINET, BUT WITH A MIRROR”? That is the exact point where the “industrial” part of industrial design begins... Companies are satisfied with the profit they make thanks to your designs, and they like this kind of detail. This product has a margin of 35 thousand sales a year and, although they still sell it at the same price, it is 5% more profitable than previous versions. In industrial design, a product has to have aesthetic value. But the same product also has to be profitable for the producer. The manufacturer has the right to sell a product at any price it wishes due to the brand value, but the design must always be profitable. DO YOU NEED INSPIRATION TO DESIGN? In design, you always need a starting point. That point creates the story behind the product. For the sofa I designed for Istanbul Design Week in 2006, the concept was water. This is one example. For this design, I threw different objects in water and photographed the surface of the water. When you put these photographs on your wall and look at the same pictures every day, you find the design that you have been searching for in the images. WHAT ARE THESE ROUND DESIGNS ON YOUR DESKS FOR? I designed them for Arzum. Arzum Dropy is a teapot wiping pad and Arzum Dropy Max is a desktop teapot wiping pad. The Dropys are designed to keep the steam, which condenses while pouring tea, off the bottom of the teapot. Murat Kolbaşı, Arzum’s CEO, wanted to find a solution for this problem. The first product is placed at the mouth of the boiler. You wipe the bottom of the teapot on this piece, letting the water drop into the boiler again. The second product aims to create a kind of drying surface. The liquid beneath the tea and coffee cups dries on this surface. It is being sold to tea gardens. I SEE A PIANO OVER THERE… DO YOU PLAY IT? I do, but I also use the piano – and music – in my designs. I use it to create a pattern. For example, Palmiye had some expectations regarding the cloth over the pergolas. After all, it is a piece of cloth and has to have some kind of pattern; in order to sell a pattern to people, you have to tell them the story of that pattern. On the other hand, we needed a minimum of 150-200 patterns. I had to figure out how to create the designs for the patterns. I created an algorithm as well as the story behind this algorithm. Our story was music, and this is where the piano came in. Music is a kind of mathematics, so I created the designs through mathematics. I transferred the three keys played with the right hand and the long, single key played by the left hand onto the design. When I placed this design module in linear or asymmetrical shapes or at 90 degree angles, I mimicked many > 23 Design >>> MY MOTTO: Rationalism. This is the starting point for my all projects and designs. What I mean is, “If you draw a line, there should always be a reason behind it.” If you add or erase that line, it means you are either adding functionality, or simplicity in order to reduce the cost. When I present a design to a customer, I will be able to explain every little detail, every small line I have used. No detail is added without a reason. I continue to work with the companies when they discuss how to introduce and market the product, how to place it in the catalog, what sort of model to use, where to do the photo-shoot and which marketing tools to use to promote the product. I believe that the designer should not leave after presenting the design and technical details. You are discussing a perspective with the companies, you are sharing life. Therefore it is very, very important to explain how to introduce and market the product. patterns from Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 14. The company’s most important marketing tool was created in this way, too: “I will sell you music, not images.” They can even say: “We can create a special design for you from your favorite composer”. ARE THERE ANY CRITERIA FOR SUCCESS IN INDUSTRIAL DESIGN? If the company makes money from the design, then the design is a success. Many very successful designs, even some that have received Red Dot Design awards, are no longer on the market. The important point here is not the functionality of the product, but the number of people who buy the product. It might be a great design, it might impress everyone, it might be thought to be groundbreaking, but if it doesn’t sell then it is the end for that product. However great the design may be, if no one buys the product it means it is not profitable for the company. LET’S SAY SOMEONE GIVES YOU LIMITLESS RESOURCES, ANY FACILITIES YOU WANT AND THE GUARANTEE THAT THE PRODUCT WILL SELL. WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO DESIGN? A metronome. It is an unbelievable product but if you search for it on the internet you will not find anything different. There are some electronic versions but their designs are again all the same... In fact, this is the simplest tool in the world and it doesn’t even need to have legs; the only important thing is the sound it makes. I would love to design a metronome, but there is not a single producer in Turkey. I would also like to design a monofin. A monofin is a kind of swimming flipper. You put both your feet in the same hole and if you move like a dolphin, the monofin enables you to swim very fast. I would enjoy working on both a metronome and a monofin. 24 > Allegro The Allegro project is one of my favourites in terms of aesthetics. I guess that’s why it has such a beautiful name: Allegro is a musical word meaning a joyful, lively and moderately fast tempo. The Allegro dish rack, with its cutting board that can be stored under the main body and compact size, is an innovative design for contemporary kitchens. Twister The aim of Twister is to change the basic act of stirring. Designs that make the user smile are always the most precious. Twister is designed for tables. It is like a toy that allows you to mix your juice with just one finger, as if you are a 5-year-old kid. Twister is an ideal mixing carafe for drinks that need to be stirred or shaken before serving, such as fruit juice, lemonade and yoghurt drinks. The three blender rods placed in the main reservoir are activated by spinning the rotating cap with a finger. Twister has a 1-litre capacity and its airtight cap allows you to keep your drinks fresh. With its easily disassembled parts, it is also easy to clean. Sirens Sirens’ is the project in which I discovered the “design search technique” for the first time. Now I use it in almost every project. Sirens’ is a seating unit that was designed by imitating several water surfaces after sinking objects of various forms. I can describe the “design search technique” like this: when a designer goes beyond the act of looking and starts to see the details, at that moment he/she recognizes that every curve, solution, or idea actually surrounds him/her as images, shades, and even sounds. The first step of this special design search technique is finding the point of impetus for the necessary form or idea. Before using a pen and paper, I study every kind of word, image or text associated with the product or function in question. Some forms or ideas brought about by one of these may take the project to unbelievable levels. For example, for a sofa which requires the water theme in its design, before using a pen and paper, I started by sinking objects in water and taking photographs of the surface that forms. For a grater, I sliced and grated dozens of blocks of cheese and archived the photographs of the forms and surfaces they create. A soup bowl design begins with reading the history of soup and researching the etymological root of the word “soup”. Then I found myself pouring boiling water on slices of bread. In order to turn the surface tension of water into images, I made small ripples in the water with tweezers. Rendy Rendy is a project that exemplifies the need of the design to reinterpret the functionality and ergonomics of the product. If you properly analyse the features you want to add to the product, it is inevitable to reach an aesthetic point. Every line and every detail on Rendy have clear reasons to be there. Inspired from the concave surface formed by thin cheese slices, Rendy’s special wing design allows it to be easily attached to bowls and pots of different sizes. This feature makes it practical and quick to use, and also reduces the number of dirty dishes. The special round and nonslip bottom bowl allows the adjustment of Rendy’s wings so that it can be used at the desired angle, and the scale-section enables the preparation of the exact amount of ingredients needed. It is easy to slice vegetables such as cucumbers, courgettes and aubergines thanks to its thin and thick slicers, while ingredients such as carrots, turnips and parmesan are easy to grate thanks to the thin and thick grater blades. The removable parts also offer easy cleaning. Supbowl The design process of Supbowl was one of my most enjoyable times as a designer. After dozens of attempts with dozens of bread slices, this project introduced me to a brand new design tool that is different from a pen, modelling clay and a computer. “The etymological idea underlying the word soup is that of soaking. It goes back to an unrecorded post-classical Latin verb suppare (soak), which was borrowed from the same prehistoric German root (sup-) as produced in English sup and supper. From it was derived the noun suppa, which passed into Old French as soupe. This meant both piece of bread soaked in liquid and, by extension, broth poured onto bread.” [An A-Z of Food and Drink, John Ayto] > 25 Enterprise “Our aim is zero mistakes” D eveloping products according to the different cooking habits and energy sources of every country and region… Established with a production concept of zero mistakes in line with RoHS and REACH because human lives are at stake… Constantly upgrading machinery and laboratories in light of the latest technology... Making it into the top 10 companies in Turkey in terms of the highest number of inventions... Succeeding in being third in Turkey in terms of patent applications... When it comes to TURAŞ GAZ, this list could easily go on. Because Turaş Gaz owes its success in the sector to innovation. Every year Turaş Gaz sets aside 5% of its budget for R&D and has become one of the top gas tap and triple burner producers in the country, a success that we believe is well deserved. We asked Murat Avcı, General Manager at Turaş Gaz, about developments in the company. COULD YOU TELL US THE STORY OF TURAŞ GAZ? Turaş is a family company that began producing various parts for vending machines in four small workshops in the Şişhane district of Istanbul. The company continued to grow and at the end of the 1970s started to produce gas taps, taking its place among the leading producers in the world. In 2008 we moved to our factory in Silivri. We upgraded our machinery and laboratories and our production and testing equipment with the latest technology. WHAT KIND OF PRODUCTS DO YOU MAKE FOR WHICH COMPANIES AND IN WHICH FIELDS? As a company we have become an expert in the production of gas taps and triple burners. 26 > >>> SINCE THE 1970S, TURAŞ GAZ, A COMPANY THAT TAKES ITS STRENGTH FROM INNOVATION AND R&D, HAS BECOME AN EXPERT IN THE PRODUCTION OF GAS TAPS. by: Yaşar Burak Meriç > 27 Enterprise >>> COULD YOU TELL US ABOUT THE PROCESSES YOU FOLLOW DURING PRODUCTION? WHICH ARE YOUR MOST IMPORTANT CRITERIA? In our factory we follow lean production techniques for all of our production lines. Throughout our supply chain we minimise waste by ensuring the balance of each production line according to the product’s takt time. We established the Turaş Production System (TÜS-TPS). WHICH INTERNATIONALLY RECOGNIZED STANDARDS CERTIFICATIONS DO YOU HOLD? WHAT IS YOUR MARGIN OF ERROR ON THE PRODUCTION LINE? WHERE ARE YOU IN TERMS OF EUROPEAN UNION STANDARDS? CE, UKRSEPRO, TS EN ISO/IEC 17025, ISO14001, ISO 18001, ISO 9001. We carry out production according to the RoHS and REACH directives. As our products affect human lives, we naturally aim for “zero mistakes” in our production. And 100% of all of our products are tested with fully automatic equipment. WHY SHOULD COMPANIES CHOOSE YOUR PRODUCTS? WHAT SETS YOU APART FROM THE COMPETITION? With the independent laboratories that we set up, we can test and certify all the burners and components of gas devices. Furthermore, we can carry out joint projects with our customers and design new products very quickly. We can immediately test these new products and get them ready for the market. The knowledge that we have built up over many years helps us in another important area. As you know, every country, every region has different cooking habits. Some prefer food 28 > that is well-cooked; some prefer food that is less well-cooked. Also, the energy source used for cooking is different in each region. We have experience of these cooking habits and range of energy sources. We offer support to companies and consumers regarding the component distribution and technical specifications of the energy source used. The most positive aspect of this is that it helps us to minimise mistakes when we enter new regions…We have full membership to CEN TC 58 and TC49. We also carry out joint projects in the energy labelling of relevant products and components, improving their safety levels and moving towards environmentally-friendly products. DO YOU CARRY OUT R&D BEFORE PRODUCING A PRODUCT? According to the results of research carried out in Turkey in September 2013, Turaş was seventh in the top ten companies for R&D and innovation projects. Between 1995 and 2008, we were HOW DID THE GLOBAL ECONOMIC CRISIS AFFECT YOU? HOW WAS BUSINESS THIS YEAR COMPARED TO LAST YEAR? WERE YOUR EXPECTATIONS MET? We managed to escape the economic crisis by growing thanks to the innovative works we carried out. In particular, during the crisis period we significantly expanded our market share by developing new and competitive models and products without compromising on quality. one of the companies that made the highest number of patent applications in Istanbul and in Turkey. In 2009 we were chosen as the third company in Turkey by the Turkish Patent Institute (TPE). We set aside around 5% of our annual budget for R&D projects and we are very happy with the results. WHAT IS YOUR ANNUAL PRODUCTION CAPACITY? I can briefly say that we have one of the highest production capacities in Europe. HAVE YOU ACHIEVED ANY FIRSTS IN THE SECTOR? I can say that we have achieved firsts in the production of new generation thermostatic gas valves and triple burners. WHICH COUNTRIES DO YOU EXPORT TO? Africa, Asia, the Middle East, Europe and Russia form our important export market. WHAT ARE YOUR OBJECTIVES FOR 2014? WHERE WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE YOUR COMPANY IN THE NEXT FIVE YEARS? In the next period we particularly want to increase our market share with products that have a high safety level, increased energy efficiency and ease of use, by producing smart products. WHAT ARE YOUR PREDICTIONS FOR THE FUTURE OF THE SECTOR? In the next period our most important products will be those whose safety standards have been raised to a maximum level. Furthermore, these products will be more decorative and will have minimised energy use. In technical terms we think that companies will move towards the production of more complex devices and that, besides mechanical devices, electromechanical devices will become more widespread. > 29 Vision >>> 30 > The Biggest Factory in Europe WITH AN AREA OF ONE MILLION SQUARE METRES, VESTEL CITY IS THE BIGGEST SINGLE-SITE FACTORY IN EUROPE, SHOWING THE LEVEL THAT TURKEY HAS REACHED IN THE PRODUCTION OF ELECTRONICS AND DOMESTIC APPLIANCES. > 39 31 Vision >>> Vestel City: Annual production capacity of 35 million. Vestel City is the biggest single-site factory in Europe, making it a brand to be reckoned with not just in Europe but also on an international level. An important indicator of this is that it was the only Turkish brand to make it into National Geographic’s popular documentary series “Ultimate Factories.” In fact it was the only domestic appliances brand alongside around 70 global giants including Coca-Cola, Ferrari, Boeing, Lego, Ikea and Lamborghini, making this a striking example of the level reached by Vestel. A SOURCE OF PRIDE FOR TURKEY Turan Erdogan, chairman of the Vestel Company Group executive committee, says, “To be part of this fabulous 32 > documentary series is a source of pride not only for Vestel but also for Turkey” The factory was officially opened in 2003 and Erdoğan says that the company is happy to be opening the doors of the factory to the whole world on its tenth anniversary. Erdogan’s words on Vestel City’s production volume and financial performance sum up Vestel’s success: “This electronic city has the capacity of producing 76 thousand products daily. In one year it can produce 15 million electronic products and 7 million domestic appliances. We export 84% of the products that we produce in Vestel City to over 140 countries around the world. In LCD television production we are in second place in Europe, with a market share of 21%. We alone make 84% of Turkey’s TV exports. Having made exports to the value of 3.1 billion US dollars in 2012, we are Turkey’s leading exporter of durable consumer goods of the last 15 years. A WIDE RANGE OF PRODUCTS FROM LCD TV TO SMART PHONES Turan Erdogan says that the company is continuing to make important investments in 2013, adding, “we are launching a new production line for LCD/LED module production, which is the most important part of LCD/LED TVs. Our investments for super slim TVs also continue.” Speaking of their year-end goals he said, “We plan to produce 10 million LCD TVs by the end of the year and to export 9 million of these.” SMART PHONES ARE COMING Erdogan states that the company’s experience with smart boards has been very useful for the production of smart phones, adding that they will start to sell Turkey’s first locally designed smart phones as of January next year. Vestel’s future plans do not end here. Speaking of smart board production Erdoğan said, “It was very important for us to be a part of the Fatih project, the world’s most comprehensive education project that serves as a model for Europe and the Middle East. We began exporting smart boards to Europe – particularly to the UK and Germany – and to Japan. T Interview: Yaşar Burak Meriç ECHNOCAST began life in 2002 trading in allow wheels; today the company has two brands, producing both alloy wheels and also plastic injection products for the white goods industry in its 10 thousand square metre facility. With over 150 vendors in Turkey, Technocast’s Kare Metal (Carre Wheels) also exports to 15 countries abroad, mainly in Europe and North Africa. The company also uses low pressure technology to produce large-scale electric engine motor bodies, and its ability to act quickly means that customer requests can be met in a short time. But the thing that really sets Technocast apart from the competition is their understanding of production efficiency and quality. With its supply chain and project management service, Technocast both succeeds in lowering costs for its customers while also improving the quality of the final product in the plastic injection field. The same year the company went into a joint venture with a Russian company, with whom we had been collaborating for a long time, becoming the representative of different brands on the Turkish and Russian markets. In 2003, in line with our strategic objectives, we continued to expand the company with the acquisition of Kare Metal (Carre Wheels), a company producing light alloy wheels in Istanbul’s Beylikdüzü district. Between 2004 and 2010 we provided turnkey consultancy services in Russia and Ukraine for the establishment of two different alloy wheel production facilities. Again, within our strategic expansion objectives, in 2010 we moved to our 1000m2 new facility in the Çerkezköy Industrial Zone and made an investment in the field of plastic injection and moulding. We continue to produce light alloy wheels (with the Carre Wheels brand, www.carre.com.tr) and plastic injection products (with the Technocast brand, www. technocast.com.tr) in the Çerkezköy Industrial Zone. WHAT KIND OF PRODUCTS DO YOU HAVE IN YOUR PRODUCT RANGE? We can provide end to end services in our two primary production areas: low pressure moulding and plastic injection. Our main product in the field of low pressure moulding is light alloy aluminium wheels. We supply 100% to aftermarket under our own brand, Carre Wheels . We have 150 dealers in Turkey and export to 15 countries. We also produce large-scale electric motor bodies using low pressure technology. Of course, we can also provide special production services to different sectors according to customer requests. In the field of plastic injection we provide plastic parts, semi-finished and finished products to key industries in the small household appliances and automobile sectors on a global scale. White goods and small household appliances are our main sectors. COULD YOU TELL US ABOUT THE PROCESSES YOU FOLLOW DURING PRODUCTION? WHAT ARE YOUR IMPORTANT CRITERIA? If I give our plastic production as an example, we have an integrated production facility. We can provide a wide range of services according to customer requests, including the production and care of moulds, plastic injection, plastic and metal painting (wet and powder paint), pad printing/ serigraphy/PVD chrome coating and electromagnetic assembly. In 2013 we established a field automation system and we are able to follow the manufacturing site in real time on > 35 Enterprise >>> an item/process basis and take fast action according to reports. Our most important criteria are efficient production and high quality. We have an established system in terms of quality management. As well as the process and laboratory tests expected by the white goods and automobile sectors, we also carry out effective quality control and maintenance activities. In terms of logistics/storage, we ensure effective logistics management using the FIFO principle and our smart shelving system. WHICH INTERNATIONALLY RECOGNIZED STANDARDS CERTIFICATIONS DO YOU HOLD? WHAT IS YOUR MARGIN OF ERROR ON THE PRODUCTION LINE? WHERE ARE YOU IN TERMS OF EUROPEAN UNION STANDARDS? We hold the ISO 9001, 14001 and OHSAS 18001 certificates; we also aim to obtain the ISO 16949W certificate in January 2014. As part of our 2014 investment plan we will also acquire the ISO 13485 for the production of medical devices. We continue making investments in this area. We work a great deal with European Union countries and we meet EU standards. The REACH/RoHS certifications and product harmonisation requirements, for example, are the top areas in which Turkish producers must take serious steps in the near future. In the past months, members of our purchasing and quality management departments have received specific training in relation to this and our preparatory work has been completed. We also continue to work with a consultancy firm regarding CE certification. WHY SHOULD COMPANIES CHOOSE YOUR PRODUCTS? WHAT SETS YOU APART FROM THE COMPETITION? Technocast is a system provider engineering company in plastic injection molding. In other words we ensure significant improvements for customers in cost and quality as they do not have to work with multiple suppliers. We also have a solution-oriented team. To give an example, in 2013 we began to work with a French small household appliances producer, one of the leading companies in the world in the field. We supply finished products to France. During the product supply process, Technocast carries out all supply chain and project management operations, and this was the biggest factor in the customer moving its production from the Far East to us. MURAT ÖNEY: “WE DO CARRY OUT R&D PROJECTS. THESE PROJECTS ARE GENERALLY ON PROCESS AND PRODUCT IMPROVEMENT IN OUR EXISTING PLASTICS PRODUCTION.” 36 > DO YOU CARRY OUT R&D BEFORE PRODUCING A PRODUCT? HOW MUCH OF YOUR ANNUAL BUDGET DO YOU SET ASIDE FOR R&D? We do carry out R&D projects. These projects are generally on process and product improvement in our existing plastics production. Additionally, in 2013 we had two “Teydeb” projects in the field of the production of medical devices approved by TÜBİTAK (Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey). In terms of figures, I can say that we set aside a budget of around 3-4% for R&D projects. WHAT IS YOUR ANNUAL PRODUCTION CAPACITY? We can process 6000 tonnes of plastic and 1000 tonnes of aluminium annually. HAVE YOU ACHIEVED ANY FIRSTS IN THE SECTOR? In 2014 we are starting to manufacture a product group that will be a first for the medical field in Turkey. WHICH COUNTRIES DO YOU EXPORT TO? We export alloy wheels to 15 countries in Europe and North Africa. We export our plastic injection products to France and Germany. >> TECHNO CAST HAS THE CAPACITY OF PROCESSING 6000 TONNES OF PLASTIC AND 1000 TONNES OF ALUMINIUM ANNUALLY! HOW DID THE GLOBAL ECONOMIC CRISIS AFFECT YOU? HOW WAS BUSINESS THIS YEAR COMPARED TO LAST YEAR? WERE YOUR EXPECTATIONS MET? We continued to grow compared to last year and we expect 2014 to be even better. Information from our customers shows us that production is tending to move from the Far East and Eastern Europe to Turkey. Of course, since the fluctuations in exchange rates affected us negatively in terms of the raw materials that tie us to foreign countries, we are now focused on exports. In 2014 we will follow an aggressive business expansion and export policy. WHAT ARE YOUR OBJECTIVES FOR 2014? WHERE WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE YOUR COMPANY IN THE NEXT FIVE YEARS? In 2014, as well as our aims regarding growth within our existing production fields and product range, we will begin manufacturing a range of products in the area of medical devices, for which we have completed our R&D. We will begin production, again in the Çerkezköy Industrial Zone, in a 1500m2 enclosed facility with a 500m2 clean room. We are very excited about this because we know that there is a significant gap in Turkey in terms of the production of medical devices. We are holding meetings with certain foreign representatives regarding the products that we are going to produce; in other words our expectations in terms of exports are also high. WHAT ARE YOUR PREDICTIONS FOR THE FUTURE OF THE SECTOR? We have positive expectations for the future of the white goods sector and its subsidiary industry. Turkey is currently Europe’s leading producer... However, we can only hold this position with the correct product and innovation strategies and with high quality products; these could even make us one of the top three international players. > 37 Most Wanted >>> Prize Winners TURKISH TECHNOLOGICAL PRODUCTS ARE NOW KNOWN NOT ONLY FOR THEIR AFFORDABLE PRICES BUT ALSO FOR THEIR PRESTIGIOUS AWARDS. Vestel, www.vestel.com.tr Practical and eye-catching Arzum Fırrın What makes the Arzum Fırrın a real prize-winner is its out-of-the-ordinary design that sets it apart from the competition. The Fırrın, which won the IF Design, Design Turkey and Plus X Award, was designed by young designer Atıl Kızılbayır. After winning first prize at the Industrial Design Competition in 2007, Fırrın grabbed the attention of the Arzum company. Arzum began producing Fırrın, the world’s first toaster in which you insert the bread from the side rather than the top, in 2011 and it soon attracted great interest from consumers. With a different design from other toasters on the market, Fırrın was selected from between 70 products to bring the first prize in the Consumer Product Design Awards to Turkey. The biggest difference from other toasters is that bread of any size can easily be toasted in the Arzum Fırrın thanks to the sliding tray. Arzum, www.arzum.com.tr Arnica, the prize factory Arnica Wipe’n Vacuum Winning the same prize last year for its Bora vacuum cleaner, Arnica once again won the “Golden Design” prize at the A’ Design Awards for its “Wipe’n Vacuum” water filter vacuum cleaner, a first for Turkey and not yet available on the market. A 100% Turkish brand, Arnica will break new ground in the sector with this water filter vacuum designed for hard floors that wipes as well as vacuuming. In 2012 Arnica produced 1 million 900 thousand items in its factory in Avcılar, Istanbul, both for its own brand as well as for international giants of the sector. With 94 different items, Arnica expects to produce over 3 million items in 2013. Arnica currently exports to more than 35 countries. Senur, www.arnica.com.tr > 41 Mentor >>> “We should be a country of producers, not consumers” WE DO NOT HAVE THE LUXURY OF MISSING OUT ON THE AGE OF INFORMATION. THIS IS ONE OF THE MAIN ISSUES THAT WE AT YASAD (SOFTWARE INDUSTRIALISTS ASSOCIATION) TRY TO POINT OUT. TURKEY NEEDS TO BE A COUNTRY THAT PRODUCES SOFTWARE INSTEAD OF JUST CONSUMING IT. 42 > > 43 Mentor >>> The main goal of YASAD is to develop the software market. To do this we follow two different paths. The first of these is to increase domestic software usage in public corporations, while the second is exports. For the software industry of a country to develop, the state has to promote the sector. If there is no state support it is impossible for us to grow in international markets. We expect the state to take on a supportive approach towards the domestic software sector. As we always point out, domestic software usage in public corporations should be increased. We work very hard to increase public awareness on this issue. Moreover, the Turkish software industry should work harder to increase export rates. Our problem in this area was a lack of collaboration. To find a solution to this YASAD along with the ELECTRICAL ELECTRONICS AND SERVICES EXPORTERS’ ASSOCIATION (TET) brought together 40 domestic software companies as a ‘Software Sector International Marketing Team’ conglomerate under the Ministry of the Economy’s Promotion of International Competitiveness (UR-GE) declaration. EDUCATION FOR EXPORTATION We will educate these 40 software companies and increase the collaboration between them over three years with the support of important consulting agencies. We will organise several purchasing and trading committees as part of this three-year project. The first group in the ‘Software Sector International Marketing Team’s target markets includes the USA, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Pakistan, Malaysia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Qatar. The second group includes Belarus, Ukraine, Iran, Albania and Russia. At the moment we are working towards organising a trade committee to Azerbaijan. As a result of these efforts YASAD was able to accelerate export efforts. Again in order to promote software exports in a different way, we are introducing our ‘Entrepreneur Education Centre’ supported by the Istanbul Development Agency (ISKA). In this centre we are going to transform the ideas of young entrepreneurs into products over a period of eight months and bring these products to the right places in the market. We will provide these people with training in a wide range of areas, from finance to patenting, software to design, planning to innovation and public relations in an intensive program of two blocks of 12 weeks. Our aim is quite clear, creating start-ups from Turkey that will feature in the world league. 1 BILLION DOLLAR EXPORT GOAL We believe that these efforts will be an important driving force for reaching our goal to increase our software export volume to 1 billion US dollars by the end of 2015. I believe wholeheartedly that ‘software’ will be Turkey’s petrol. 44 > Doğan Ufuk Güneş YASAD CHAIRMAN IT is a strategic sector for many countries around the world. We need to look at strategic sectors from two different points of view. Firstly the contribution that they make to within the country... For instance IT provides a 170% return to the country’s GNP; this means that if you make an investment of 1 TL, you will get 1.7 TL back in return. On the other hand, software changes the way the companies – whether it is an SME, large company or public corporation – do business, making them more flexible, improving efficiency and helping them to reach a wider audience. The second component of the issue is the fact that information technologies have an export potential, while added value and profit margin in this sector is also comparatively higher. A product that was produced by a software company can be used anywhere in the world. Where the production cost is 1 unit, this may become millions, billions even, in the virtual environment. WE NEED TO CREATE MORE BRANDS This is why information technologies are at the focal point of governments’ strategic sectors around the world. We also have been experiencing dynamic growth in this area over the last decade. Support from the state has increased. However we are still behind in terms of branding. We need to view support for IT exports as an investment. If we take international examples as a starting point, even if just one of the many investments bears fruit the result will be measured in billions. Although some of our demands to develop the software sector have been met with support programs and governmental incentives for the sector, there are still vital steps that need to be taken. However, if we look closely at the incentives that have been provided so far, we would list the following: The Ministry of Transportation, Maritime Affairs and Communications decided to provide a 300 million TL incentive to our sector within the R&D fund formed last year. The Ministry of Science, Industry and Technology runs five different programs to support R&D and university-industry collaboration within the scope of two laws and one decree. ALMOST 15 THOUSAND PROJECTS CARRIED OUT There are 31 technoparks in service today, and this figure will soon reach 43. R&D companies operating in these parks reached 1,730, with 14,626 people working in these companies. To date 7,677 projects have been completed, with a further 4,861 ongoing. The sector’s export volume reached 540 million US dollars, there are 65 foreign firms operating in the parks that have made a total investment of 450 million US dollars and submitted 301 patents. Moreover a fund of 90,412,200 TL was granted for these parks. 56% of the projects being run in the technoparks belong to the software and IT sectors. In addition to what we state above regarding the needs and expectations of the sector, we should state that there are steps that must be taken for 2013 and for the coming period for the development of our sector. Almost all of the companies developing products in the IT sector in Turkey are independent companies that were created to meet the needs of the domestic market. This means that it is local market needs that decide the areas of activity of these companies. Almost 50% of the software companies in the sector offer services in the fields of manufacture, automation and administration. In this context, companies should be encouraged to develop the software sector local software and applications. We believe that the state should adopt a policy of positive discrimination for domestic software between equal products. WE NEED TO OVERCOME OUR DEFICIENCIES IN STANDARDS AND CERTIFICATES Firstly domestic software and applications, and tools and platforms for software development should be encouraged. Furthermore, the development of domestic software and IT tools and platforms as well as R&D support mechanisms should be made easier, while companies that producing software and software platform operating should be provided with incentives such as special technopark tax exemptions. The following steps should be taken in order for the software sector to grow. The state should adopt a policy of positive discrimination towards domestic software between equal products, domestic software should also be accepted as products and purchased at public biddings, onsite R&D law should be improved and compulsory employee numbers should be determined. For example the compulsory number of 50 researchers for an R&D centre to be established should be reduced to 5. Although a number of incentives and grants have been provided for the sector, there are still many things that still need to be done. Among these is the need to determine quality certification and standards… Another of our problems is the lack of an inventory system. We cannot provide exact figures for the sector. We expect real state support on this matter. Lastly ensuring the use off-set agreements, already used in the defence sector, in the software sector we will gain serious momentum. > 45 Interests>>> A “Smart” Turkish Project at Solar Decathlon METU’S SOLAR DECATHLON TEAM TURKEY ATTRACTED HIGH PRAISE FOR THE NEW PERSPECTIVE IT BROUGHT TO SMART HOUSES WITH ITS ECOURT PROJECT. Y by: Yaşar Burak Meriç ou can do anything if you put your mind to it. After two years of work, fourth year student in food engineering at the Middle East Technical University (METU) Elif Uğurlu and her friends managed to achieve a first for Turkey with their eCOurt smart house project. eCOurt is the first Turkish project to participate in Solar Decathlon, a competition held by the U.S. Department of Energy every two years since 2002, held this year in China. We asked Elif about the story behind their participation in Solar Decathlon, in which teams from only the world’s most prestigious universities compete, and about the details of their project. Despite the fact that technical issues prevented them displaying their project in China, the eCOurt smart houses have already made an impression as a project that focuses on comfort and aesthetics. COULD YOU TELL US A BIT ABOUT THE STORY BEHIND YOUR PARTICIPATION IN SOLAR DECATHLON? In order to participate in Solar Decathlon teams that apply are asked for a detailed proposal report, and the top 20 teams win the chance to participate in the competition. The selected teams 46 are then expected to design their houses and build them with the support of sponsors within two years. The constructed houses are then moved to be displayed in the city where the competition is held and are evaluated by special juries in fields such as engineering and architecture. We, the Solar Decathlon Turkey Team, were the first Turkish team to win the right to participate in this world famous competition, held in the Chinese city of Datong in 2013. HOW WAS THE SOLAR DECATHLON TEAM TURKEY FORMED? The Solar Decathlon Team Turkey was established by students at the Middle East Technical University, and during the project period around 50 students and various academic consultants were involved. Students from different departments at METU, such as architecture and engineering came together to work on this project over two years. When the proposal report that we sent in 2011 was accepted by the competition committee, we moved to the design stage. WHAT WAS YOUR MAIN AIM WHEN PREPARING THE PROJECT? HOW DID ECOURT COME INTO BEING? As our main aim we chose to design a smart house that prioritised comfort and aesthetics. In line with this we aimed to produce an integrated architectural and engineering solution that reduced the environmental impact to a minimum and that had high levels of energy efficiency and we combined creative ideas with traditional Middle Eastern architecture to design a modular, smart and energy-efficient house. We added a courtyard to the design of the house in order to promote traditional Turkish architecture abroad. For this reason we chose the name eCOurt, in order to reflect the ecological nature of the house as well as the courtyard. eCOurt has highly energyefficient technical features, such as passive lighting and solar cooling, water heating, ventilation and electricity production. The flexible design of the 60m2 house features rooms surrounding the courtyard. Inside the house is a bedroom, kitchen, living room and machine room. eCOurt is made of four separate modules and can be disassembled and rebuilt in one week. IN YOUR PROJECT YOU USED AN INTERESTING MATERIAL FOR THE INSULATION. HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THIS IDEA? An important criteria of the competition is that projects should include innovative and sustainable ideas. When we were doing our research we learnt that denim can be used as a natural and recyclable insulation material. We decided to use denim for the insulation of eCOurt as we thought it was an environmentallyfriendly solution that was appropriate for the concept of the competition. We collected old jeans to be used for the insulation through a campaign we organised called “Dress Our House in Your Jeans.” In this way we were able to include the Turkish public in our project by asking them to send us their old jeans, and we received 1500 pairs in a very short time. The first jeans donation was given to us by Fazıl Say who came to METU to give a concert. We then turned the jeans we had collected into insulation material that we used in the roof and walls of eCOurt. WHAT IS YOUR NEXT OBJECTIVE? We now plan to use the knowledge and experience that we gained to promote our house in Turkey. For this promotion we will first complete the new modifications needed to smooth out eCOurt’s little flaws and then we plan to exhibit the project in METU as a living building. After that, our biggest hope is to be able to take the project to the whole of Turkey with the help of various sponsors and supporting ideas. Although raising awareness in Turkey of green energy and energy efficiency is the main reason for doing this, another important factor is the wish to see the team’s two years of work and the contribution of our supporters – our sponsors and particularly our families – during this period come to fruition in the project. About Solar Decathlon Since 2002 Solar Decathlon has; • Been the stage for competitions between houses designed by 111 interdisciplinary university teams. • Created a successful education programme and gained recognition throughout the world. • Had an impact on the lives of almost 15,000 students. The 2011 Solar Decathlon; • Received over 350,000 visitors over 10 days. • Held 37 workshops. • Reached millions of readers and viewers through different media channels. WHY WERE YOU UNABLE TO EXHIBIT YOUR PROJECT IN CHINA? Firstly there were political developments that negatively affected the work and planning, and as well as this we experienced problems with sponsorship for transportation. This all had a negative effect on the team and we were unable to take our house to the competition exhibition in China. When we evaluate the process in general we can see that we were negatively affected by problems such as lack of experience, various unexpected hitches and difficulties in finding the necessary financial and moral support. But leaving these aside, despite the fact that we were unable to take the house to the competition, we in the Solar Decathlon Team Turkey represented ourselves well throughout the competition period. We proved the high level of success of our team in two workshops held during the two-year competition period, and, as we were invited to the competition site we were able to share our experiences with other teams and look at how the competition was evaluated. > 47 Zoom >>> SEDUCTIVE RED COMES TO HOME APPLIANCES VESTEL WASHER-DRYER With a 29-minute Wash & Dry programme for small loads, Vestel’s washer-dryer takes the pain out of doing the laundry.
