PUBLISHER’S LETTER
This issue is all about the water—taking a moment to look out over this FINE
city and behold all the amazing things happening port and starboard. Over
the years, San Diego has transformed from humble maritime beginnings to
a thriving travel destination that nuances our coastal past from Coronado
to Oceanside. Franklin D. Roosevelt once said, “To reach a port we must
set sail—Sail, not tie at anchor, sail, not drift.” It is with this spirit that we
celebrate the very best of San Diego in an issue that represents the culture
of San Diego—ever changing, ever growing and looking on to new horizons.
This month, make sure to join FINE magazine for an evening of live fashion
and fresh cuisine at AMAZING Lace in Rancho Santa Fe on August 15.
Fred Applegate and John Winfield
This elite charity event will highlight several of the businesses, people and
organizations that make our city, our towns and neighborhoods the places we
love to call home.
Sail away this month and rediscover your hometown.
See you at the show!

A watch designed to do the same is the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph TOP GUN Miramar. Its high-tech ceramic and titanium case,

that it occasionally goes much further than its wearer’s wrist. Mechanical chronograph movement | Self-winding | 68-hour power reserve when fully

Retro Petals
This summer, some of the best and brightest floral patterns mix
classic prints with new shapes in design or contemporary twists on
old favorites. Barely-there bikinis take a break this summer while
trendsetters sport high-waist lines and full tops on the beach. Bright
and bold colors look great against neutral backgrounds like skin
or nude wall color. Floral packs a punch in jewel tones and retroinspired design.

La Jolla is serving up a variety of delicious and healthy drinks,
smoothies, acai bowls and other smart food options. For the first
time ever, Nekter La Jolla will include a Nekter Cleanse Bar--a

“Monalyssa.” painting by Todd Krasovetz
San Diego’s chef and restaurateur Matt Gordon has done
it again. Opening his third restaurant in the newly renovated
Flower Hill Mark, Sea & Smoke, An American Brasserie will
be specializing in comfort foods that Americans crave. The
decor of the restaurant is retro, with a 1950s vibe. Open for
breakfast, lunch and dinner from 7:30 a.m. to midnight, this
restaurant doesn’t serve up any artificial ingredients. The drink
menu embraces the seafood, meat and vegetable items on the
menu. With a lounge area in front of sunken bar and a patio
comprising of 7,500 square foot, locals now have a new trendy
restaurant for nights on the town.
Nekter Juice Bar, La Jolla
Salt & Cleaver, Hillcrest
Art lovers in North County will be happy to hear about Rancho
Santa Fe Art Gallery, a new art gallery that has opened up on
Paseo Delicias. Gallery director, Barbara Dawson scored this key
location, which features original artists such as Todd Krasovetz.
This artist paints contemporary abstract and expressionist oil
paintings, and can copy a photograph down to the minute detail,
almost fooling the viewer into thinking it’s a photograph as well.
This spot features fine art, perfect for your home.
Inspired by 1860s industrial Chicago, Salt & Cleaver, a new craft
sausage company in Hillcrest, is serving up local ingredients and
modern meats with the age-old tradition of sausage making.
Executive Chef Carlos Sanmartano explores global notes in
cuisine, with 19 different flavor schemes to pair with 20 specialty
beers on tap and handcrafted cocktails. Vegetarians will find
great alternatives to these meaty offerings, like “The Faceless” a
mixture of quinoa, asparagus, peppers and cauliflower wrapped
in a cauliflower leaf and served with citrus slaw and herb aioli.
Jalapeño and green chili-stuffed rabbit sausage or duck and
bacon sausage are just a few favorites sure to please meat eaters
with an appetite for creative fare and local flare.

Caroline’s Café serves up healthy options.
Article and Food photos by Maria Desiderata Montana | Additional photos used with permission
G
iven the wide array of stunning
locations to dine in San Diego,
it’s nearly impossible to find a
new venue tucked away from the typical
tourist hotspots. There are many choices
in this beautiful city, with whitewater
vistas and orange sunsets every day of
the week. With a kaleidoscope of cuisines
representing most corners of the world, it
can be somewhat of a challenge at times
to find a simple menu that still provides
healthy and fresh choices.
Unexpectedly nestled on the water’s

Just steps north of the La Jolla Shores

eatery, where you are welcome to enjoy
breakfast or lunch while soaking-up the
endless ocean views extending far beyond
Scripps Pier. Caroline’s is an excellent
example of the healthy spirit that
continues to define Southern California
lifestyle. Here you will find plenty of
UCSD students and faculty, as well as
beachgoers, surfers, tourists and local
foodies. Each may enter with a different
objective, but none will leave without
bolstering their happiness and savoring
a meal meant to satisfy every craving,
without sacrifice for quality and taste.
Caroline’s atmosphere is reflective of the
UCSD Seaside Forum, with a relaxing
contemporary look and a laidback feel.
The outdoor patio boasts a bistro-style
charm and is the perfect place to dine

“First and foremost the food is clean,”

I was lucky during my visit one Saturday,
as there were plenty of seating choices
between the morning and lunchtime
rushes, but it’s clear that Ciuffa has a longstanding group of UCSD regulars.
“Everything on the UCSD campus is

The café serves my preferred Bird Rock

choice is the natural turkey Cobb salad,
with hormone-free turkey, organic leafy

avocado, pineapple salsa, toasted sesame
seeds and a tangy citrus vinaigrette. For a
more hearty meal, order the Mary’s Farm
Panini, with Mary’s Farm Chicken, tricolor peppers, onion, Swiss cheese, baby
greens and balsamic vinegar. Another
popular item that’s great during any part
of the day is Caroline’s Parfait, featuring
house-made granola, berries and low-fat
organic vanilla yogurt.
Ciuffa uses the seasonal touch, ensuring
the menu changes often to take advantage
of the freshest local ingredients. His
personal and favorite place to pick up
produce is the locally owned Chino Farms,
and he also is a member of the Specialty
Produce Farmers Market Program, where
he can pick and choose his menu items.
“I like to create all of the menus in
my business,” Ciuffa said. “My idea of
healthy eating is to incorporate everything
your body needs: protein, fat, grains and
fruit. When I put together a dish, I make
sure every category is included. I don’t
believe in diets, I believe in discipline and
regime.”
As an avid cycler and outdoorsman, it’s
clear that Ciuffa takes this philosophy
seriously. And it appears that many of his
patrons have the same idea.

After the Finish Line ensures racehorses flourish after they leave the track.
By Nicole Lawrence | All photos used with permission
The career of a racehorse is full of
excitement. In this sport of kings, these
majestic animals are the true celebrities
that draw fans to the racetracks. But, with
an average racing career lasting only two
to five years, what awaits these athletes at
the end of their career, when they cross the
finish line that last time?
What may be presumed as a time of
victory is all too often is the opposite.
Contrary to what many people may like
to believe, racing is a sport for the fans
and a business for the owners and trainers.
And because it so strongly revolves around
profit and loss, the outcome for the horses
can often be very bleak.
Many of them become unwanted or
useless to their owners. The reality of
42 FINEsd.com | facebook.com/FINEmagazines
what happens after the finish line becomes
something most horse lovers would
prefer not to consider: Convenience leads
approximately two out of every three
Thoroughbreds that come off the rack—
even those that are sound and healthy—
to become euthanized, abandoned or
slaughtered, exporting the meat to Europe
and Japan for human consumption.
With no federal legislation that concerns
itself with this fate, and an industry that
has been slow to self-regulate, much of
the needed concern and care as to what
happens to retired racehorses has been left
to charitable organizations. And many of
these organizations work on shoe-string
budgets to meet the everyday needs of
their horses, without additional money
budgeted for emergencies or to save
additional horses.
This is where After the Finish Line
comes in. It understands the need to
provide rescue organizations a reliable
funding source. Through yearly grants
and emergency funds, this all-volunteer
organization is involved in fundraising
to provide year-round financial support
to qualified Thoroughbred rescue
organizations that save, rehabilitate, retrain
and adopt racehorses that can no longer
race or breed.
Because even after they cross the finish
line, racehorses remain athletic animals
that are full of life. If given the chance, it
has been shown that these talented equine
athletes can excel in careers as hunters,

jumpers, dressage, western or pleasure,
polo, trail, companion or therapeutic riding
horses. As such, After the Finish Line helps
support the transition of these horses into a
second career and a new beginning.
The organization’s mission is threefold.
First, it wants to educate the public
about the health, protection, preservation
and alternative career options for
Thoroughbreds when their racing or
breeding careers are over. It also aims
to provide year-round financial support
to qualified rescue and retirement
organizations. Finally, it ensures a quality
of life for Thoroughbreds by saving them
from slaughter and neglect.
Just last year, with the support of its
donors, After the Finish Line awarded
nearly $100,000 to 65 rescue organizations,
helping more than 300 ex-racehorses and
broodmares at all different stages of their
racing and breeding careers.
And with racing season in full swing,
After the Finish Line is determined to
present a different perspective. Do we
understand how hard the horses work for
our enjoyment? Do we understand the
danger and injuries they face as they race
around the track at speeds upwards of 40
miles an hour?
Instead of people deciding what’s best
for the horse, we should be listening to
the horse. And the unspoken language of
a horse speaks loudly. If given the chance,
a horse that is unsuccessful at the track
may one day be a star in the competitive
horse show arena. Through patience, one
can give horses the opportunity to show
their true potential. And at the very least,
they can become someone’s companion
and friend, creating an unbreakable bond
between horse and rider. But these rescued
horses are the lucky ones.
The financial burden placed on a rescue
is massive. The organizations take on
the responsibility and cost of surgery
or medical expenses, as well as paying
farrier, dental or vet expenses, hay and
feed, and boarding and transportation
expenses. Lack of funding prevents rescue
organizations from being able to accept
more horses into their program, because
they can’t compromise the care of their
current horses by accepting more.
It’s the funding and grants provided by
After the Finish Line that allows for each
rescue to help more Thoroughbreds—
funding that becomes life and death for all
too many of these animals.

Local microbreweries put San Diego on the map.

ill in the blank: Wine is to Napa
Valley as _______ is to San Diego.
The answer is beer.
San Diego’s microbreweries are popping
up like hops, developing delicious
brews from North County all the way
downtown. These breweries are creating
a variety of different beers to please even
the most discriminating palates, including
dark, pale ale, red ale, wheat beer and
lagers. And several local bars are getting
in on the action, carrying local brews on
tap.
At the 2010 World Beer Cup—an event

Cruise 4 Kids
An exclusive luxury car rally from
Hotel del Coronado to a private jet hangar at the Carlsbad Airport.
Article by Kristine Breese | Additional photos used with permission
T
he tricky thing about having a
hobby is that sometimes people
close to you can feel neglected
or relegated to the “back seat” when
you’re indulging in it. Whether it’s golf,
marathon running, or breeding horses,
there’s time spent on the pursuit that, by
its very nature, means you’re less available
for other people and things.
So what if your hobby is cars? What
if you want to tune, restore, collect, or
simply just drive and admire exotic,
expensive, luxury automobiles? How can
you indulge and not feel guilty – and how
can you involve family and friends so they
feel part of the fun? And what if, and this
could be the Holy Grail, pursuit of this
passion produced a benevolent result for

others and allowed you to make a broader
difference in the world?
Well, if you like how this sounds, Nino
Venturella and the San Dieguito Boys &
Girls Club have a proposition for you,
if only for one day per year – and the
chance that the good feelings shared by all
will linger long after?
It’s called Cruise 4 Kids, and it’s an
exclusive 40-mile luxury car rally that
travels from the Hotel del Coronado over
the Coronado bridge, through downtown,
and up the coast to a private jet hangar
at the Carlsbad Airport. It features wideopen, traffic-cleared city-streets and
freeways, brunch at the start and catered
lunch at the terminus. It boasts Porsches,
Ferraris, Lamborghinis, and a 1967 Rolls
Royce once owned by the Queen of
England. It promises all green lights and
no flashing lights.
It’s all this – and it raises money for
charity.
“Cruise 4 Kids takes something people are
passionate about, and creates something
fun for them that also benefits a good
cause. It’s a total ‘win-win’,” says Nino
Venturella, a private banker with Wells
Fargo and board member of the San
Dieguito Boys & Girls Club, which is the
beneficiary of the event. “A lot of people
love cars – guys with exotic sports cars,
especially. I know these guys, and ladies
too, are also really philanthropic. My idea
was that these folks had had enough with
the golf tournaments, galas, and wine

tastings. But what if we created a way for
them to indulge in their favorite pastime
and do good at the same time? That
would be magic.”
Annie Ragovin, Director of Fundraising
and Communications for San Dieguito
Boys & Girls Club (SDBGC), agrees
there’s something magical about the
event, even if she was taken by surprise
when Venturella when first proposed it.
“To tell you the truth, I thought he was
crazy,” she says. “But that’s the beauty of
our Board, we encourage them to find a
way to contribute that meets their needs
and matches their interests. Nino’s a ‘car
guy,’ and this may be an extreme example,
but it’s exactly what we mean when we ask
for the Board to get involved.”
Ragovin, who has headed up
development and PR for SDBGC for
nine years, says this is by far “the most
complicated event we put on. It makes
the galas seem like a walk in the park.”
And yet, it’s already one of the most
popular and talked-about events, getting
great press for the Club, and bringing new
donors to the table all the time. “Almost
100% of the participants are brand new
donors to the Boys & Girls Club, and in
fundraising that’s what you’re always
trying to do, find interesting ways to bring
new people in.”
Nino explains that he hand-picks a lot of
the participants, working his network of
high-net worth clients and their friends,
visiting car shows, and tapping into the
“car club” scene around town. “Another
cool thing about Cruise 4 Kids is that
it brings together ‘Porsche guys’ with
‘Ferrari guys,’ and all that. Because the
event is focused on fun and charity, it’s like
‘Switzerland’ and we all get together for a
good time and a good cause.”
Ragovin and Venturella report that
this year’s event, to be held Saturday,
September 7th, will be the third year, and
they’re anticipating a sell-out. “We had 73
drivers the first year and 144 last year,”
Venturella says. “And because of the
popularity of it, we’ve been able to more
than double the participation fee from the
first year to $750/car. Our goal is to get
to $1000 per car, and raise $100,000 for
the Club.”

Cruise 4 Kids
AUGUST
“...a real
difference is
being made by
the money raised
in this event.”
Not to be cynical, but drivers admit that
another reason the event has gotten so
popular is that it allows these guys (and
most of them are guys, although wives and
girlfriends are much in evidence) a chance to
show off their cars – and drive them across
the Coronado Bridge, through downtown
and up I-5 with their path completely
cleared by law enforcement.
Jeff Abramson, owner of Cavallo Motor
Sports, and both a rally participant
and corporate sponsor, says you can’t
underestimate the draw of indulging in
your passion with a bunch of other people
who share it. “If you drive a car like this, it’s
obviously not a necessity and you want to
show it off. You get a lot of attention when
you get to parade through the middle of
town during the middle of the weekend with
a hundred other cars,” he says. “Combine
that with the cause, and it’s all good.”
50 FINEsd.com | facebook.com/FINEmagazines
CHP Captain Rich Stewart is one of
those who makes the “parading” possible,
and he’s a big fan as well. Cruise 4 Kids
contracts with the California Highway
Patrol to provide the traffic breaks on the
I-5 to give them smooth sailing up the
coast. “Sure there’s a lot of logistics, but
we’re happy to do it because it’s great fun
for a great cause.” Stewart says the drivers
get a safety briefing before they take off
reminding them that all the rules of the
road apply. “Sure these cars go fast, but
everyone knows that’s not the point of
the event, and there haven’t been any
citations.”
In addition to the CHP, Cruise 4 Kids
has to coordinate with San Diego and
Carlsbad Police Departments, CalTrans,
San Diego Sheriff Department, and
the California and San Diego Film
Commissions (the whole thing is captured
on film by car-mounted cameras and a
helicopter flying overhead), among others.
Ragovin and Venturella see a long road
ahead – filled with exotic cars and happy
driver/donors. “People may be familiar
with the San Dieguito Boys & Girls Club
because their kids have participated in
our programs. What they might not
know is that we’ve got seven sites, and
kids and families at each of them that
attend on scholarship.” At one location in
Solana Beach, called La Colonia, all 110
kids in the program receive subsidized
enrollment.
“Sure this rally is a lot of fun, and these
cars are amazing to look at, but don’t
doubt for a minute that something very
tangible is happening and a very real
difference is being made with the money
raised by this event,” she says.

n any given day, from the miles
of shoreline in San Diego,
boats fill the Pacific waters
of picture-perfect harbors, dry docks
and piers, gliding in and out of view
while the sun slowly moves overhead
and out to sea. In San Diego, nothing
so effortlessly nuances the California
dream like the nautical compass—one
that points in the direction of somewhere
far off the fading bluffs or brings a salty

decorate almost every souvenir boutique

For some, it’s a pastime—a recreational

or from the comfort of a luxury yacht.
For others, it’s a job. And for those who
take a more aggressive approach, it’s a
passionate quest for glory that requires
dedication and commitment, a story with
rich and international history.
A sailing competition since 1851,
America’s Cup is a competition for the
oldest active trophy in international
sports. It is a race between two yacht
clubs—a defender and a challenger—for
stewardship of the cup. The event got its
name when the America, a schooner from
The New York Yacht Club, passed the
royal yacht in the Isle of Wight. Queen
Victoria famously asked one of her
attendants to tell her who was in second
place, to which he replied, “Your Majesty,
there is no second.” Since then, countries
have been vying for the only prize and the
ensuing bragging rights. The San Diego
Yacht Club was a part of this storied
history, winning the cup from Australia in
1987 and holding it until 1995.
This year’s race takes place in San

A MATTER OF PRIDE
34th America’s Cup will be awarded to
the team with the highest cumulative
score from two seasons, in events that
take place all over the world.
To determine a worthy challenger for
the America’s Cup, the three teams are
competing for the Louis Vuitton Cup,
scheduled now through Aug. 30. The
original regatta took place in Newport,
R.I., in 1983. The winner of this
debut event, Australia II, was the first
challenger to ever take the trophy from
the United States, which held the trophy
for 130 years. As the war wages on, with
new challengers and more at stake, the
pressure rises and the crew gets hot.
In an excerpt from Julian Guthrie’s

AUGUST
book, “The Billionaire and the Mechanic:
How Larry Ellison and a Car Mechanic
Teamed Up to Win Sailing’s Greatest
Race, The America’s Cup,” Larry
Ellison, founder of Oracle Team USA,
describes this labor of love:
“Fun? You think we’re here for fun?
Do you think losing is fun? I don’t. This
is professional sports, not a third-grade
T-ball game. Is sailing fun? Yes, if you
want to sail to Sausalito and sit and do a
little fishing or sunbathing out with your
family, that can be fun. If you’re sailing
in the America’s Cup, if it’s your job, you
are supposed to work very hard. We are
here to win. Winning, that’s my idea of
fun.”
Ellison’s team, along with his worthy
rivals are anticipated to spend more than
$100 million each on their boats, crew and
facilities, with these catamarans costing
an estimated $8 million each to build.
This high-end, high-speed boat race is
suiting up to go more mainstream, as
Ellison attempts to make the event more
attractive to television networks and aims
to make the sport as popular as Formula
One.
This high-end sporting event has a
lot more to offer than just sailboats.
The America’s Cup Pavilion is a
9,000-seat amphitheater built for the
summer racing season, with 20 concerts
planned, including family-friendly shows,
AUGUST
community and comedy acts. With several
food vendors and convenient sports bars,
fans won’t miss a second of the action on
large television screens.
Another great place to take in the race
season is from The America’s Cup Super
Yacht Program. Exclusive packages
include priority berthing in the America’s
Cup Super Yacht Village, flagged
spectator locations along the racecourse
with the live race feed broadcasted into
each luxurious vessel. This is the VIP of
VIP experiences for yacht club enthusiasts.
This year, the cup will host a fleet of
some 15 super-yachts in their Superyacht
Regatta—ranging in size from 85 feet to
300 feet—scheduled for early September.
A MATTER OF PRIDE
For the first time in history, the America’s
Cup hosts the Red Bull Youth America’s
Cup, opening its sails to young sailors
for a chance to gain the experience of a
lifetime and the opportunity to contribute
to a cup team. This year, three homegrown
sailors are representing San Diego
as part of Team USA45 Racing—a
team made up of nine sailors ranging
in age from 19 to 24. Jake LaDow,
Jake Reynolds and Nevin Snow—
all 19-years-old—grew up in Point
Loma and have been sailing together
since they were very young. Together
the three won the Governor’s Cup in
2011, an international junior match
competition, and were brought up from
junior sailing ranks to participate with
other sailors from across the country in
this year’s premier event.
As these exciting races build
momentum and become a more popular
spectator sport, the competition brings
with it a prestige that is unique in the
world of sporting events. It’s a passion
that, for some, starts very early in life,
like the youth competitors from San
Diego who became familiar with the
skills at the San Diego Yacht Club.
There’s no denying the love affair San
Diego has maintained with boating
throughout the years. The America’s
Cup is an international recognition of
something that is eternally in our veins.
