Well more or less 45 costumes (The first and the second were sewn by my mother, so let‘s say 43 costumes ;)) and the ones I‘m working on at the moment. Why did you start cosplaying? For how many years have you been cosplaying? I startet cosplaying in 2002 at the age of 13 (Wow that‘s a bit crazy), without a pause. At the age I startet, i was flashed by Sailor Moon and other Manga. I lived near Frankfurt (still), and so a friend of mine and i decided to visit the bookfair. In 2002 the fanscene wasn‘t as big as today, but when i saw cosplayers, who where really friendly, i began to think about starting myself. I also liked the idea of turning kinda “In- your- beloved- character” and to make everything with my own hands. All the people were so kind and warm, gave me tips and had the same interests, so it wasn‘t hard to start all by myself. At this same time I also was a member in the theater group at school and the idea of a “real performance” was another point that made me start to do cosplay. Which kind of costumes do you like making? That differs from time to time. A while ago i really like to do handicrafts, at the moment i love to cosplay cool (side-) characters whoever i really like and whose characters are similar to mine. Most of them are friendly, joyful persons. I feel now (after years) at ease with my sewing machine, so I would say I prefer costumes, which are in most parts sewn. What is your dream cosplay? Oh, well that‘s Helba from .hack. She‘s been on my wishlist for ages. There are still a lot more, but she is the one! What are your favorite manga titles - anime shows - games? All manga of Yuu Watase (Especially Fushigi Yuugi), Skip Beat (damn, that‘s so great), Fullmetall Alchemist (Anna brought me into this great series), Orphen, Tramps like us, NGE, X (I love the way the story takes), .hack (games/anime/manga) etc. etc. If you want me to answer you the “Why” it would go beyond the scope of this portfolio! I‘m not the kind of gamer, but I like Eternal Sonata, SingStar, Soul Calibur and all SuperMario Games. Which languages do you speak? English (very well), French (good), Latin (I can read it) and of course German. What is Japan to you? A country with many faces and clash of cultures. Modern, loud, bright but as well traditional and quiet. For me, as a student of modern art, there is so much to experience, that is different to western tradition and cultures (in positive as well as in negativ way – i am quite objective). Do you like karaoke? Can you sing Japanese songs? I adore karaoke. I haven‘t sung typical japanese songs until now, but we can change that! (Openings are my delicacy). At school I was in the choire, so yes, I like to sing. Have you been in Japan before, what was is like? If you haven’t been in Japan before, why do you want to go there? No, i haven‘t, but my boyfriend and a really good friend of mine where. So i could recieve a little impression about the people and the country. I want to go there because of the culture, the food, the landmarks, also because of anime and manga. For my art studies it would be great too (I‘m specialized on photography ;)) It‘s one of my lifetime dreams to visit Japan. I am a person who loves to travel and who loves to see foreign things, and Japan is so special. It would be an honour to be there. Questions and Answers answered by Anna For how many years have you been cosplaying? Cosplay in sense of anime, manga and video games, I started in 2004. How many costumes did you make yourself since you started cosplaying? For this, I will only count my animanga/games costumes. That would be around 35 then. Why did you start cosplaying? I actually liked to dress up ever since i can remember. When I was a child, I always looked forward to „Karneval“ Similar to Halloween in the US, only in Febuary. I just liked being someone else. This is why I started playing theatre what I did for a long time. I always loved making the costumes by then, taking the designs from the big shows . I never knew that could be called cosplay by then. When I arrived at my fist con, I saw the cosplayers, and I was like: wow, costumes, in a complete new surrounding! A much bigger field to explore! The anime and manga world opened up new kinds of costume designs and a lot more oppertunities than given real clothing. Which kind of costumes do you like making? Mostly costumes that have the majority of them sewn, not crafted. Somehow the designs always appeal to me more than armor stuff. I like the feel and touch of different fabrics. I love working with laces and piping, and I love corsets. It‘s not like I didn‘t do armor , it‘s just not what I basicly love ;D What is your dream cosplay? I don‘t think, that for me there is that „one“ dream costume. I have a lot dream costumes: there are costumes that are dream costumes because I love the character. As for this, about every Ichihara Yuuko (xxxholic) is a dream costume for me. Every time I‘m wearing one of her costumes, it‘s a little dream come true. But then, there are the dream costumes because of the design. Like Fran (Final Fantasy XII). Or Ultima (also FF XII) that I want to do. She actually does not have a character since she is an esper (a summon), but she just looks gorgeous. Which languages do you speak? German and English fluently. A tiny little bit of french, and I can say „The cat is in the bathroom“ in Japanese. Only stuff of importance ;D What is Japan to you? Japan is a country that‘s kind of torn apart between tradition in progress, and that‘s what it makes so very interesting. The culture and history is very different from ours. Apart from those quite obvious reasons, there‘s one thing in Japan that makes it special for me too: I never ate a big variety of food before I met my boyfriend. He loved japanese food and forced me to eat it - I loved it! So japanese food opened my door to a lot of foods, because I‘m not so shy in trying new things anymore. Do you like karaoke? Can you sing Japanese songs? I love singing! I‘ve been in a musical association for 10 years, so I sang a lot. I like karaoke too, but usually I don‘t know japanese songs. Just very few openings, but not by heart. I‘d practice like mad though ;D Or just be the person everybody can laugh at ;D What are your favorite manga titles - anime shows - games? For Manga I go with xxxholic and Fullmetal Alchemist. I love both shows and I‘m more the shounen type. Not the girly one. Some goes for Anime, but add Mai Hime here. Action! Drama! ;D For Games, I guess I love Final Fantasy X most, because everything of it gave me goosepumps. I think it‘s the only game I played in which everything is just perfect. Have you been in Japan before, what was is like? If you haven’t been in Japan before, why do you want to go there? I haven‘t been to Japan before. Mostly because my boyfriend was afraid of flights. But I don‘t participate in the WCS to go to *Japan* actually. I guess a good vacation would be more appropriate for watching cities and landscapes ;D It‘s more to meet other cosplayers and people from foreign countries, and to actually present germany somewhere else. But this goes into the next section. Why do you want to win the WCS Preliminary? Winning the WCS does not only give one a travel to Japan. We want to make contact with other cosplayers, the japanese cosplay culture, we love to perform on stage, and we want to give germany a friendly and open face towards everyone and new things. We think it‘s one of those experiences that is worth all the trouble of heat, stress and jetlag, because it‘s a one-in-alifetime memory. It was already awesome with all those people at last years prelim. But we guess it can still get better ;D Costumes of d space e t i m i l w e have a will sho Since w mes each, we es until stu um three co CS Prelim cost he free W In t you our ually three...) our t tion on now (ac l find informa mes and ostu u wil part yo ay to choose c lls. lw ski genera tuming our cos 2010 R E V O L C Suu Eva as s Oruha Anna a We were discussing what to cosplay for WCS. Since we‘re both fans of CLAMP, we decided to read through the mangas and stopped with Clover. The characters were perfect for us and we love this kind of story, although the ending is sad. Eva‘s thoughts on Suu and the costume: There was a big choice of costume variations for Suu, but I decided to make this variant, because the wings seemed to be convertible and the rest of the costume was simply beautiful. In 4 weeks we finished the wings which are fixed by a smart construction under the corsage. I never have made a corsage before and in my opinion this was the hardest part of the costume XDD The next time I won‘t use boning for the staff. Thanks to the construction of the wings, I was able to move and walk easily. It was a lot of fun to work on Suu, I love to work meticulously on such kind of costumes. Anna‘s thoughts on Oruha and the costume: Oruha was on my wishlist ages ago. I think it requires very much strength to know the day you die, so I really think she‘s a strong woman. For the costume I decided on her trademark dress and add the wings from another one (I really wanted wings!). I hate sewing vinyl, and redid the corset twice. But in the end I love this costume and my microphone very much. Clover gave us very valuable experience on the way to our skits now. You can read about that in the free part. 2011 c i l o h x x x i iwarash Zashik hi Eva as ewaras m A s a Anna For the second time we took part at the WCS, we wanted to do something new, not too dramatic, a bit sweet. We both were nuts about xxxholic at this time. Especially the side characters like Ame- and Zashiki warashi were (and are still) great and so it was decided that we were going to cosplay them. They were perfect for us and also for the idea of a drama-free performance on stage. Holic showed us „our“ ideal way to do it. Eva‘s thoughts on Zashikiwarashi and the costume: Anna‘s thoughts on Amewarashi and the costume: Thanks to Anna who had the pattern of an original Kimono, Zashiki Warashi was sewn very fast. The bulk work were the roses. Just as Anna, I used coatet film. Every single leaf was cut out of it and steamed on the fabric and the green cirrus was painted. Another challenge was the big rose on the bag. It should be like the bow of an obi on the one hand on the other hand it should look like a flower. The shoes are original Getas from Japan. Well, all in all I am very happy with the costume. I remember how difficult it was to find a pink fabric. That sounds weired, but it was REALLY difficult. Apart from that the hardest parts in my costume was the wig (I had to back part it and make those weired pigtails - I had never done pigtails before), and preparing the umbrella for the performance. Poor thing had to endure a lot. 2012 i g u u Y i Fushigas Miaka a Eva or Miak r r i M s Anna a 2012 was the horror-year for our WCS performance. Originally Anna didn‘t want to participate at all because she was preparing for the Eurocosplay finals. But well, Eva can be convincing. We agreed to do something just for fun, a comedy skit with Sailor Moon. Due to certain circumstances, in the end, we had to skip our plan twice, and this idea and costumes were made within four weeks before the convention. So we‘re really proud of what we made in the short time, and that we didn‘t fail miserably - at least we got really nice feedback on our skit! Fushigi Yuugi showed us that we can achieve a lot in a short time if we try. Eva‘s thoughts on Miaka and the costume: Fushigi Yuugi is one of my favourite manga series. I am really happy we finally managed to plan this skit. It was kinda obvious that I would play the „good“ Miaka, you can find a lot of similarities in our character ;) We tried to find the perfect fabric and paid a lot attention to the costume and the accessories. I think it cam out quite well. The planning of the skit didn‘t need as much time as we feared due to our time plans. So we were really happy it worked and the audience liked it. For me the good fearful Miaka wasn‘t that hard, especially with Anna as my contrapart. Anna‘s thoughts on Miaka and the costume: Of course I had to be the bad girl ;D For these costumes we paid extra attention to the choice of our fabrics, to the trimmings and such. We made a great part of the costumes together, concerning they needed to be as identical as possible. I also liked our idea of the skit, which wasn‘t the stereotypical skit either, we started out funny and turned into drama afterwards - Many people told me I shocked them with my blood-licking action (go ahead and watch the video ;D) - which really made me happy. I wanted to be disgusting. Free Part s a t s i s Peilo shell t In a nu We are part of the group “watashitachi peilosistas”. Watashitachi is a japanese word for “we” or “us” (which should be appropriate for girls/women and not too formal – that’s what we were told ;D). So that kind of means: we are what or who we are. We’re not a fixed group. We’re just friends. As you can see, we don’t do all our costumes together, at the same time or whatever. We just got to know and like each other at various times, places and reasons. Yet we’re glad we found such nice people sharing our hobby. More and more frequently it happens that we do par ner- or groupcosplays, or that we perform with each other. We both were part of musical groups in school or private, so we enjoy being on stage and performing for the audience. This makes us feel safe and so is our planing for the performances. But basically none of us has to do something for the other, which leads to a pretty much relaxed and bitch free relationship ;D Everyone is still an individual, having own projects, but we enjoy hanging out on cons very much. Eva was the first to enter the WCS preliminaries in 2008. Since 2010 we both are now together as team. Something personal about Eva Hi, my name is Eva, I‘m a german Cosplay-Nerd for a long time now, but beside this hobby, I‘m studying art and politics with the aim to be someday a (really cool) teacher ;) I love to take photos and to be creative in any way. I‘m a really lively and joyful person, who also likes to learn something new, to hang around with good friends, to eat, to party and so on, but I enjoy moments of silence, concentration and relaxing as well. Something personal about Anna Hi, I‘m Anna. Even though my foreing friends know me as Artflower, my german nickname is Katrin Kleeblatt, who is Patty O‘Green from Rainbow Brite. I love green. I‘m a green person. I‘m also a graphics designer with priority on webdesign and photography, running my own business with a friend. In my freetime, apart from being a cosplayer, I‘m a part-time-nerd, part-time-gamer, tribal bellydancer and plushy lover, who has to try every stupid mainstream craft even once. Actually, we don‘t participate in Contests often. but here‘s our small „show off list“, and our performance videos of the past premliminaries ;D 2004: Cosplay Competition Hon Con, Aschaffenburg, 2nd place (Eva) 2007: Cosplay competition Connichi, Kassel 2nd place (Eva) 2010: WCS Preliminaries 5th place Germany Watch the video - CLOVER 2011: WCS Preliminaries 3rd place Germany Watch the video - XXXHOLIC 2012: Eurocosplay preliminaries 1st place and Finalist for Germany (Anna) 2012: WCS Preliminaries Best Application Watch the video - FUSHIGI YUUGI 2013: German Cosplay Championship preliminary , Animuc, 2nd Place and Qualifier for the final (Anna) Wanna see more? This may not be common, but for us it‘s really important how we choose our ideas and make our skits. And it may be interesting for you was well. And then, if there‘s something in it where we can bring in surprise elements, or something that looks plain cool. We also like opinions of other people. Because if one works on something a longer time, the view can be narrowed, and one is missing out stuff. Like something of that you think was obvious, but for another person it was not. So we usually ask a few friends beforehand, and we always ask the judges after the skit for advice. What wasn‘t that good, what we can improve. And was was good, to perfect it. When we first participated together we chose characters and then thought of a fitting skit. This turned out to be...not our „right“ way to do it. Because after the prelim we realised that we had depended too much on our characters, and that people, of course, did not neccessarily know them. So for the next skit we decided that it had to be easily understandable. Usually we have more than one idea, so we figure out which is, in our opinion, the best idea. An idea that has a closed story with beginning, a peak and a conclusion. An end where everyone knows that the skit is at it‘s end. An idea that has characters who fit our attributes as height, physical appearance, our actual character. Like Anna would not do a Card Captor Sakura for a skit, because she‘s twice as tall and 20 years older. Or Eva wouldn‘t do a sophisticated midaged woman because she‘s softer and cuter. An idea that can be done without words. This is our preference when it comes to skits of international background. Not too many words. Make it understandable for every nation. This was when we prepared our skit for 2012. Eva kept telling our food looked like something that made Anna blush. Well. This sounds quite obvious, but actually we needed that first skit to understand that. So since then, we kind of go through different options until we find a basic idea of which we think that it will work out smoothly without too much knowledge of the media where it‘s based on. This all sounds a little like „work“ and actually, it is. We never loose our fun in it, but we also want to entertain people, because it will also make us happier if people feel entertained (more fun then again^^). Unusual wigstyles (pigtails keep haunting us...) So called „Skills“ Even though we both like to sew most of our costume, it‘s not that we didn‘t try different stuff! Here‘s a few samples of other materials we worked with. Wigs with stubbing, lacefront and foamcore, Worbla‘s finest Art and Wonderflex, polystyrene, paperclay, Apoxie Sculpt, Craft foam, Resin.... Sewing wise it‘s also a wide field - from muslin to silk and velvet, embroidery, corsets, hooped skirts, bodysuits, lapel collars.... Weapons and armory s s e r g o Pr tching progress pics. wa We like Do you? Fran/FFXII helmet Fran/FFXII wig Skyrim armor Allegretto/Eternal Sonata Sword That‘s it. Of course we‘d like to show you, like, every detail in every costume we made to convince you that we‘re suitable to participate. But we guess we‘ll leave you with that since you have to watch through a looot of other applications. We hope we could entertain you a little ;D Have a mysterious preview on what we‘d do i n the prelims... and guess what ;D
