It is a romantic mystery about a woman on the edge who takes an emotional journey back to the defining moment of her life. Oscar-winner Charlize Theron plays Sylvia, a beautiful restaurant manager whose cool, professional demeanor masks the sexually charged storm within, whose life is shaken to the core when a stranger from Mexico confronts her with her mysterious past. Also starring Academy-Award Winner Kim Basinger, Jennifer Lawrence and John Corbett. Please come celebrate with our generous co-sponsors. We all look forward to seeing you. Movie Night Charlize Theron and a slew of designers to celebrate The Burning Plain on September 16 Tuesday, September 01, 2009 (NEW YORK) Be honest: by the time September 16 rolls around, you'll be desperately looking for some entertainment--and not of the runway variety. Charlize Theron has enlisted the help of several sure to be equally-exhausted members of the fashion flock to help celebrate her new move, The Burning Plain. Director Guillermo Arriaga and Theron will host a screening of the film, which tells the story of Theron's brush with a Mexican stranger, tying her to a tangle of mysterious pasts. Film buffs at the screening (and, naturally, après-party at The Box) will be joined by designers like Donna Karan, Chris Benz, Charlotte Ronson, Rachel Roy, and Tory Burch and social types Joy Bryant, Dylan Lauren, Eleanor Ylvisaker, Tinsley Mortimer, and Mary Alice Stephenson. Women's Wear Daily Red Carpet Flash: Charlize Theron Red Carpet Flash: Charlize Theron Thursday September 17, 2009 The end of fashion week finds most celebrities with a weary sense of fatigue and a growing disdain for flashbulbs. Not Charlize Theron. Unaffected by the overabundance of parties, fleeing paparazzi (overbooked for the evening with other red-carpet affairs) and the overall strain of a packed fashion week, Theron glowed in a blue one-shouldered Givenchy dress with white zip-up Givenchy heels at the Wednesday night New York screening of her new film, "The Burning Plain." The star grasped a small black Bottega Veneta clutch as she grappled for the designer of her gold and diamond hoop earrings. "Fred..." she said, searching. "Leighton! Fred Leighton! Sorry. First name basis, me and Fred." Theron admitted she was not particularly bothered, or interested, in the happenings going on in Bryant Park. "Shows? I went to see my friends at Rag and Bone — it was amazing. That's the only one I went to." The actress explained that she was not in New York for the sartorial celebrations after all, but for more sporting endeavors. "I was here for the tennis," Theron winked. "This is the week that we're really promoting the film. And fashion week is way over, right? Oh it's not? Well last week I was here for the US Open. I was enthralled in the tennis." Notably absent at the Skyy Vodka sponsored after party at The Box, perhaps the star had decided to practice her forehand instead. Naked deception September 21, 2009 Charlize Theron was forced to film a nude scene for "The Burning Plain" at dawn, to avoid the paparazzi. The scene, in Portland, Ore., shows the completely naked star smoking a cigarette through an open window in full view of passers-by. Director Guillermo Arriaga told Page Six, "We had to shoot the scene at 6 a.m. before any of the photographers were up. It was done in such secrecy that it wasn't even in the script. Only three people, including myself, knew it was going to happen." Charlize Causes a „Burning‟ Sensation Friday September 18, 2009 Oscar winner Charlize Theron caused some problems the other night at the premiere of her new film, “The Burning Plain.” Theron, who‟s one of the movie‟s producers, didn‟t win any friends when she left as the movie started to screen and never returned, not even to the party that was held for her at the Box downtown. According to insiders, Theron did work the press line before the film. She brought her mother along, and insisted that she be included in the pictures. There was no sign of Stuart Townsend, her longtime steady beau, however. When director Guillermo Arriaga (”Babel”) introduced the film, Theron didn‟t bother to leave her seat. She just waved to the crowd instead of coming forward. When the lights went down, Theron split and eas not seen again all night. An explanation was offered that she wasn‟t feeling well. “Burning Plain,” which opens today, also features Kim Basinger, who rarely works anymore but has gotten high marks from advance audiences. But she‟s done just about nothing to promote the film. Maybe both actresses knew the fairly negative review that would come from Tony Scott in today‟s New York Times. But in a year when there are few possible best actress nominees, they might have been a little more cooperative. At least they didn‟t ask for money to promote the film. That‟s the only positive I can think of. True Blue Charlize Theron attended the NYC premiere of her new drama “The Burning Plain,” a new indie film that opens today, is comprised of several seemingly unrelated subplots that revolve around actress Charlize Theron’s promiscuous restaurant manager Sylvia. The interwoven romantic mystery also stars Kim Basinger, Jennifer Lawrence and John Corbett, and is the directorial debut of Guillermo Arriaga, best known for writing “The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada,” “Babel,” and “21 Grams.” Speakeasy spoke to Arriaga at the film’s New York premiere, where he shared his thoughts on making a movie during an economic downturn, globalization and today’s most influential Spanish-speaking directors. The Wall Street Journal: Since you made this movie during the recession, what’s one thing you did to cut costs? Guillermo Arriaga: It’s a pity that the movie came out in these times. [For example,] it was shown on video-on-demand before hitting the theaters because any [distribution method] that will bring the audience is very welcome. Who do you think are today’s most influential Spanish-speaking moviemakers? Mexico, my country, has found powerful fortune in bringing out wonderful directors and writers. One of the greatest masters of cinema is a [filmmaker] who has been exiled from Iran. So I think globalization has allowed lives from all over to come here. Do you think American audiences are more accepting of non-U.S. influences in films now? I absolutely think so. I think America is a culture that has been growing up thanks to uncertainty. America is a country that embraces other cultures. I’ve been making this type of [cross-cultural] movie for 20 years now and people have kept coming. Good dramatic films, like “American Beauty,” [will find] an audience. Now that you’ve directed your first film, do you want to continue directing or keep writing? I want to keep writing, directing and producing in whatever terms I can because I love the cinema. Charlize Theron Sizzles at The Burning Plain Premiere The Burning Plain heated up the city Wednesday night when Quintessentially hosted the New York premiere. Skyy Vodka sponsored the screening of the dramatic film, which stars Charlize Theron as a woman on the verge of a breakdown, who journeyed back to the watershed moment in her life. An artsy crowd, including Elettra Wiedemann, Lauren Remington Platt, Kate Schelter, Stella Schnabel, Bill Murray, Yigal Azrouel and Fonzworth Bentley, took their seats with popcorn in hand to take in the movie and catch a glimpse of the star. Theron’s look was smoking hot; the Academy Award winning actress wore a midnight blue Givenchy dress and super sexy Givenchy zipper sandals. Her heels were so high that when director Guillermo Arriaga introduced her, she couldn’t make it down to the front of the theater. “There’s too many steps; I might kill myself,” said Theron as she greeted the crowd from the balcony of the Sunshine Cinema. We share your pain Charlize, hence the reason we took our seats at the top of the stairs to catch your amazing performance! ~Nola Weinstein Charlize Theron is still sizzling on the red carpet Thursday 17 September, 2009 Charlize Theron showed off her fashion credentials yet again at the New York premiere of her new film Burning Plains Charlize Theron is one star who's been having a fab fashion week. She's been doing the rounds at US premieres of her new film The Burning Plain, and she's been looking uber-glam at all of them! At the LA premiere on Monday night the Oscar-winning star strutted the catwalk in a stunning yellow dress, and she looked just as incredible at the New York premiere last night. For her NY red carpet look Charlize rocked a fab Grecianinspired, midnight-blue, one-shoulder draped dress which she teamed with fierce white sandals with an oversized zip and a glamorous updo. As well as chatting with her co-star Jennifer Lawrence, Charlize was also joined on the red carpet by her mother, Gerda, who showed us exactly where Charlize gets her stunning looks from. But Charlize has been turning heads off the red carpet as well. The star was spotted earlier in the week watching the US Open Tennis at Flushing Meadows in New York, where she looked glam in grey and was joined by her boyfriend, actor Stuart Townsend. Charlize has definitely been having a fashionista week, and we thoroughly approve! By Camilla Swift Thursday 17 September, 2009 Look of the Day Charlize Theron in Givenchy WHAT SHE WORE Charlize Theron went for elegant but edgy in a teal-coloured one-shoulered Givenchy dress and fierce zip-front heels. A tiny box clutch was the only accessory she needed... Frankly with a pair of shoes that fabulous, there's really no need for any other embellishment! WHERE The Burning Plain film premiere, New York. Quintessentially Hosts Premiere Of “Burning Plain” With Afterparty At The Box Last night “Burning Plain” premiered at the Landmark Sunshine Theater. The movie marks the directorial debut of screenwriter Guillermo Arriaga, whose previous work includes writing Babel and 21 Grams. The film stars Charlize Theron, Jennifer Lawrence, Kim Basinger and Joaquim de Almeida. The romantic mystery is about a woman Sylvia, who is played by Theron, taking an emotional journey back to the defining moment in her life and reconciles with her somewhat troubled past. Arriaga, along with Charlize Theron, Jennifer Lawrence and Teresa La, attended the premiere. More story and photos from the premiere below… Before the movie began, Arriaga enthusiastically introduced the film as well as the cast members that were present. When he asked Theron (who looked absolutely striking) to join him at the front, she playfully said that her heels were too high and she didn‟t want to fall down the steps. The event was co-hosted by Lauren Remington Platt, Kate Schelter, Stella Schnabel, Bill Murray, Yigal Azrouel, Fonzworth Bentley, Faune Chambers, Lynn Collins, Damien Fahey, Amy Finlayson, Vanessa Fitzgerald, Esti Ginzburg, Tim Hamilton, Tom Hooper, Astrid Munoz, Katie Nauta, Nailea Norvind, Norman Reedus, Reshma Shetty, Julie Taymor, Denise Vasi and Elettra Wiedemann. The after party was at The Box, where the cast and guests gathered to celebrate. “Burning Plain” hits a theater near you tomorrow, Friday, September 17. Ashley Wilcox Platt, Lauren Remington Platt, Esti Ginzburg, Adar Zango Celeste Greenberg, Sandra Gutierrez, Ashley Sousa Frances Tulk-Hart, Sabine Heller, Tessa Ia, Guillermo Arriaga Alison Wright, Reshma Shetty Charlize Theron Katie Nauta Kim Basinger Sizzles in "The Burning Plain" By Paula Schwartz Kim Basinger has some of the sexiest and most poignant love scenes of her career in The Burning Plain, which had its premiere in Manhattan this week. And they're hot because she plays a woman who has bonded physically and emotionally with a lover who came to her later in life. In the drama, which costars Charlize Theron (who is also an executive producer), three women are featured in different threads of an intertwining story—a signature of screenwriter Guillermo Arriaga (21 Grams, Babel), who makes his feature directing debut here. It was Theron who suggested casting Basinger as a married mother of four having a tender affair with a Mexican farmer (Joaquim de Almeida). "I didn't hesitate," said Arriaga at the premiere. "I think Kim's a great actress. I think her persona—she's very shy, and I think her persona brought a lot to the character. It gave more depth to the character that I was imagining." It's rare to see people in their fifties having passionate sex, and Arriaga commented on this: "First of all, I don't think the sex life of anyone ends at any point," he said. "And sex life is not only about sex. It's about eroticism. It's sensuality. It's communication. It's finding someone. It's also an excuse to reinvent yourself. It was important for me, sex and love after 50." Theron, who walked the red carpet in a tiny mini and killer gladiator spikes, plays a maitre d' in a posh restaurant who turns to anonymous sex to help get her through the night and block out her guilt-ridden past. She is naked in the film's opening scene: She gets out of bed—where a man (John Corbett) is sleeping—and stands in front of a window with her breasts exposed to the world and her face absolutely numb. “Charlize is a very committed actress,” said Arriaga. "She was very brave because it was well below 20 degrees Farenheit. It was freezing; we were afraid she was going to die from pneumonia. “She understood perfectly the reason for that scene," the director added. "It‟s presenting nudity without any sexual connotation. Nudity as a way of detachment; nudity as a way of alienation. When you present yourself that naked to the world, you have lost the reality of that world.” His inspiration, he said, was Edward Hopper‟s stark paintings. “These women that are by themselves naked, non-sexually arousing. They are just naked. I wanted to portray nakedness like that.” We wondered whether shooting the scene brought frenzied crowds and photographers. “It was very early in the morning. I think it was a Sunday. There was no one; no paparazzi,” he said. Arriaga noted that Theron did her own hair and makeup so she wouldn‟t look “too pretty.” As Theron was about to dash into the theater, we asked her if it was hard shooting the nude scene and playing such a numbed-out character. “It has to be hard, or otherwise why do it?" she said. "That‟s the thing about creativity: All artists want the challenge.” And what did she think her future might bring—maybe directing? "I don't know," she said. "Not right now. But you know, if somebody asked me 15 years ago would I produce, I would have said no. So never say never." „The Burning Plain.‟ An Interview with Charlize Theron. September 17th 2009 Alissa Lentz S&V: What were some of the major obstacles you had to overcome while making the film? Guillermo Arriaga: There were obstacles every day, but that’s the enjoyable part of directing. You have challenges every five minutes, it becomes like solving puzzles or playing Nintendo, but in real life. S&V: What inspired the screenplay? Guillermo Arriaga: This woman, right here, inspired the screenplay. (he turns to his beautiful wife) Its about love. Love not in the balanced sense, but love as intense as it is that sometimes it can destroy. Its about powerful love, so powerful that it can heal and be whole again. S&V: Did you find anything about the directing process surprising? Guillermo Arriaga: Yes, I was surprised how great it was to do it. If I had known, I would have been doing this since I was nine! S&V: What’s next for you, do you have any projects in mind? Guillermo Arriaga: Yes there are some projects, but my main project now is to bring as many people to this movie as possible. The cameras click again, this time accompanied with cries of “Jennifer, Jennifer” The spunky, young and beautiful Jennifer Lawrence smiled for photos while strutting down the red carpet. S&V: Did you look up to Charlize Theron as a role model? Jennifer Lawrence: Of course, she’s six-foot-three, of course I looked up to her (smiling). I had looked up to her before I started filming, she was one of the reasons I got into acting, I was a huge fan. So now I’m just totally obsessed. S&V: Did she give you advice? Jennifer Lawrence: We talk, I haven’t had any questions yet but if I did I would call her. The excitement died down as the celebrities took their seats. Charlize Theron, Jennifer Lawrence an Guillermo Arriaga walked off the red carpet arm-in-arm to watch their hard work debut on the big screen. QUINTESSENTIALLY and Skyy Vodka brought a beautiful premier of The Burning Plain to New. JUST JARED.com Charlize Theron Burns For The Burning Plain Thu, 17 September 2009 Charlize Theron struts her stuff at the New York premiere of The Burning Plain at Sunshine Cinema on Wednesdat (September 16) in New York City. The 34-year-old actress rocked out a Givenchy dress and shoes and accessorized with Fred Leighton jewels and a Bottega bag. Charlize was interviewed by USA Today, and responded to the fact that she has been nude in many of her movies. “I‟m not some exhibitionist. I think people think I just love walking around naked.” “When you start making it about yourself, you stand in the way of doing your job,” Charlize said. “I have to sit in an editing room with (director) Guillermo Arriaga and a bunch of execs, and if I had to sit there and think about myself and these men watching me, I think that would make me insecure. I‟m just like every other girl out there. I would cringe.” Charlize will appear as a guest on The View today (September 17). 15+ pictures inside of Charlize Theron burning for The Burning Plain… Charlize Theron wears insane shoes, still supports gay marriage This is Charlize Theron at the New York premiere of The Burning Plain at The Landmark Theatre. Now, I think a lot of Charlize‟s beauty. I think she‟s a glamazon, I think she takes fashion risks, and I think she can get away with almost anything. It pains me when she wears something as blah and boring as this utterly average navy dress. The dress (and the boring hair and makeup) make it seem like she wasn‟t even trying. The little peeptoe faux-booties are another story. Is anyone else reminded of Sandra Bullock‟s hot mess outfit at her recent premiere? These insane, zippered, fauxbooties cut off the line of Charlize‟s legs, which is totally dumb. Charlize has great legs - why does she want to look so stumpy? Anyway, while out promoting The Burning Plain, Charlize stopped by The View, and she ended up talking about her total and complete support for gay marriage. Some of this stuff she‟s said before, like she wouldn‟t get married until gay couples were allowed. Once she even went further than that, saying American marriage laws were “a form of apartheid”. In context, Charlize said: “I don‟t like living in an elitist world, it bothers me. I don‟t want to be part of an elitist sexual preference. Maybe it‟s because I come from a country where I lived under apartheid. This is a form of apartheid and I don‟t want to be a part of that.” On The View, she basically reiterates her points, but says she wouldn‟t be able to “sleep” with herself if she got married right now: Another Hollywood star who refuses to marry until it‟s something everyone can do: Charlize Theron, who has no plans to tie the knot with Stuart Townsend, her boyfriend of eight years. She talked about marriage equality, something she has previously supported, Thursday on „The View.‟ “I don‟t want to get married because right now the institution of marriage feels very one-sided, and I want to live in a country where we all have equal rights,” Theron said. “I think it would be exactly the same if we were married, but for me to go through that kind of ceremony, because I have so many friends who are gays and lesbians who would so badly want to get married, that I wouldn‟t be able to sleep with myself.” CHARLIZE THERON - THERON AVOIDING ALL TENNIS NEWS September 17th 2009 THERON AVOIDING ALL TENNIS NEWS Tennis fan CHARLIZE THERON is avoiding turning on the TV or reading any newspapers - because she doesn't want to find out the results of the U.S. Open finals. The Hollywood star was spotted in the audience in the earlier rounds of the New York championship tournament last week (ends11Sep09), but she has yet to watch the men's final between Roger Federer and Juan Martin del Potro. The match was due to take place on Sunday (13Sep09) but heavy rain pushed the game back to Monday (14Sep09) when Theron was in Los Angeles to promote her new film The Burning Plain. So she's steering clear of all news until she can sit down and catch up on her sporting passion. She says, "I'm a huge tennis fan but don't tell me what happened in the finals. The men's finals I haven't seen because it rained and then they pushed it a day and then I had to go to L.A. and I had to do press so I didn't get a chance to watch it."
