Why Study Music?
•
Success in School: Students with coursework in music
performance and music appreciation scored higher on
the SAT: 53 points higher on the verbal and 39 points
higher on the math for music performance, and 61
points higher on the verbal and 42 points higher on the
math for music appreciation than students with no arts
participation.
Success in Developing Intelligence: A research
team exploring the link between music and intelligence
reported that music training is far superior to computer
instruction in dramatically enhancing children’s abstract
reasoning skills, the skills necessary for learning math
and science.
Why Study Music? (Continued)
• Success in Society: The College Board
•
identifies the arts as one of the six basic
academic subject areas students should study in
order to succeed in college.
Success in Life: Music is about
communication, creativity, and cooperation, and,
by studying music in school, students have the
opportunity to build on these skills, enrich their
lives, and experience the world from a new
perspective.
Why Study Music? (Continued)
• Musical Experience: Music is a
worthwhile endeavor in and of itself. It
