1.2 billion €. These projects are located
throughout the dynamic areas of the world
where we are traditionally present and involve
principally investments in infrastructure and
energy. However, there are still problems in
crisis-torn regions and new restructuring
measures will be put in place in 2010.

Soletanche Bachy’s activities fell in 2009 by 25%
to 1,139 million €, mainly due to the collapse
that affected Central and Eastern European
markets and to the declining Middle Eastern
markets, especially Dubai. We have also
recorded a reduced level of operations in France
(completion of the Le Havre port project), in the
United Kingdom and in Spain. On the other
hand, business increased in the United States,
Latin America and Asia.
Against a generally difficult background for the
construction industry, Soletanche Bachy, like
other ground related sectors, has particularly
suffered. Nevertheless, we reported a 3.8%
operating profit after costs for the consolidation
and reorganization measures required.
2009 and, more especially, the start of 2010
proved fruitful with over one billion dollars of
orders received and an order book that has
reached an historically high level of more than
As a result of these new contracts, 2010 will be
a year where we will see a slight growth in our
activity. This will motivate us to redouble our
efforts to improve our results. Work on the

Teams in the field
A network of branches and
subsidiaries spread across some
fifty countries, all of which have
specific operational resources to
handle the normal day to day
requirements of their clients.
These local establishments
are supervised by geographical
divisions generally based
at head office.
All the operational
resources of the Group
are available to everyone
Secondment of supervisory
and engineering site personnel
and allocation of the key specialist
plant is coordinated and managed
at Group level. This enables
resources, best adapted in terms
of quality and quantity, to be
mobilised rapidly as required
by individual projects. The Major
Projects Department and the
Plant Department are responsible
for ensuring that these resources
are compatible with requirements
arising from anywhere in the Group.
A team dedicated to major
international projects
The International Business
Division benefits from the
proximity and support of the
Technical Department and other
Group Departments. It secures
and carries out “commando”
projects in areas not covered by
the Group’s permanent overseas
branches.

Whatever the size of the site, and on the sole condition that it involves a significant proportion of works in
the ground, Soletanche Bachy is ready to undertake the complete management of a project, and all aspects
of the works, including earth moving, foundations, civil engineering and all construction operations.
When it works as a general contractor, Soletanche Bachy relies on its own resources to undertake all complex elements related to geotechnics and the ground rather than relying on subcontractors.

UNDERGROUND
CAR PARKS
Soletanche Bachy undertakes the
whole of a project from feasibility
studies, through design to the
complete construction on a turnkey
basis. We can also arrange project
financing and long term operation
if the client wishes. The Group uses
its extensive geotechnical
experience to optimise projects.
Tunnels and metros
In the tunnelling field, Soletanche
Bachy’s subsidiaries Soletanche
Bachy Tunnels and CSM Bessac
specialise in management of tunnel
sites and also, for the latter, the design
and construction of tunnel boring
machines. In addition, mastery of
the associated techniques (drilling,
grouting, ground water control
diaphragm walls, anchorings, etc.)
allows the Group to undertake
complete projects. Large tunnel
sites are often undertaken in joint
venture or in partnering
arrangements. Soletanche Bachy
also undertakes maintenance of
tunnels, for example, through its
subsidiary Sotem, which maintains
the Paris Metro tunnels.

STORAGE TANKS
AND DRAINAGE
Soletanche Bachy has substantial
experience in all types of hydraulic
infrastructure: storm storage tanks,
drinking water reservoirs, either
underground or at the surface,
pumping stations, water treatment
plants, drainage tunnels and sewers
(constructed using either tunnel
boring machines or pipe jacking),
and rehabilitation. As with
underground car parks, its expertise
in geotechnical and underground
works is the basis of its main
contracting activity.
PORT
CONSTRUCTION
Whether constructed on dry land
or by offshore methods, port works
require specific techniques and
expertise, which are offered
by Soletanche Bachy and its
experienced nautical works
subsidiary Balineau. We construct
quay walls, dry docks, landing
stages, dolphins, sewers, ground
water lowering for major
excavations under the water table,
installation of gabions, and
underwater operations.
CUENCA DEL PLATA TERMINAL , Montevideo

ENVIRONMENTAL
PROTECTION
Through its subsidiary Sol
Environment, Soletanche Bachy
provides solutions to various
pollution problems: inertisation of
waste, rehabilitation and treatment
of polluted sites, cleaning of
discharge to required environmental
control levels, construction of waste
storage facilities, protection of
the water table. The development
of a solution for all such sites
requires that regulations, physical
and chemical conditions, and the
hydraulic and geotechnical
characteristics of each site are taken
into account. Other Group companies
provide support, on a project by
project basis, in constructing,
for example, cut off walls for
containment of polluted volumes
or reactive barriers.

LOWER CARNO DAM (United Kingdom)
> Cut off wall 180 m long and an average depth of 34 m.
DAMS
The sealing and stability of dams
generally requires substantial
grouting, sealing and drainage works.
The techniques of boring, injection
and drilling, which are the original
activities of Soletanche Bachy, are
now complemented by other
procedures, including diaphragm cut
offs, either in concrete, plastic
concrete or slurry, and jet grouted
cutoffs. The Group’s activity in this
field remains substantial on all the
continents, both for new work and for
rehabilitation and reinforcement
works, particularly where raising of
height of dams is required.

REHABILITATION
OF STRUCTURES
AND UNDERPINNING
WORKS
These works are carried out to
reinforce foundations that have
degraded with time or have been
damaged by events. Where a
structure is to be subjected to higher
loads or forces than it was originally
designed for, underpinning of the
foundations is often required as part
of its upgrade. Plant required for this
type of operation must be of high
capacity at the same time as being
compact in order to work within the
existing buildings or basements,
without generating vibration or shock
that could cause damage. Continuous
precise monitoring of the existing and
surrounding structures (the speciality
of our subsidiary SolData) is often
required to ensure that they are not
disturbed as a result of the new
ground works. Rehabilitation of all
types of structures is often required,
including ancient monuments and
buildings, and very large structures
such as dams and tunnels.
COLLEGE OF BERNARDINS, Paris (France)
> Structural underpinning of this building using
micropiles.
SLOPE STABILISATION
Soletanche Bachy stabilises cuttings
and slopes for roads, motorways,
railways, dams and industrial sites.
We also deal with natural slope
stability problems such as landslides.
Each project requires a unique
solution. Positive retention is often
employed, by means of anchorings,
piles or barrettes. Other special
techniques such as drilled drains,
drainage trenches, and mix-in-place
or injected inclusions are also used.
Complex problems often require a
range of these techniques to be
carried out in combination.

FOUNDATIONS FOR
BUILDINGS OR
CIVIL ENGINEERING
WORKS
Suitable foundations are required for
all building and civil engineering
structures to ensure that they
perform within the settlement
criteria established in the design of
the structure. Special foundations
are used where shallow footings do
not provide adequate support for a
structure. Such special foundations
have been, historically, the core
activity of Soletanche Bachy. We
have developed, through our
Research and Development efforts,
many of the procedures and
techniques that are in use today

> Foundation works: perimeter wall and

throughout the world. We continue
to improve and optimise our
technology and offer unique and
optimum foundation solutions
whatever the nature of the ground
and the type of construction. We
offer all types of piles, barrettes,
diaphragm walls and micropiles,
together with soil mixing processes
and ground improvement
techniques.
FOUR SEASONS HOTEL CAR PARK, Baltimore (United States)
> 10,000 m2 of diaphragm wall to a depth of 24 m.
> 750 temporary anchors.
URBAN EXCAVATIONS
Major urban excavations are one of
the specialist activities of
Soletanche Bachy. Such excavations
are required for basements to
buildings that are usually part of the
foundations of the structure and
provide car parking. Such
excavations are also used for understreet car parks, cut and cover
tunnels for roads, rail, metro and,
more recently, for sewage treatment
plants and pumping stations. They
are also for upgrading of building
services such as energy and air
conditioning plants. The
environment of such excavations is
often complicated by existing
adjacent structures and services, the
need to maintain traffic circulation,
and the low tolerances in relation to
noise, vibrations and other
environmental disturbance.
12 SPECIALISED
SUBSIDIARIES

nationalities that make up our Group,
in the diversity of competence and activities,
in the diversity of experience and cultures.
The Group today encompasses sixty
nationalities, among which there are strong
contingents of French, Anglo-Saxons,
Hispanics, Chinese and Central Europeans.
Inter-mixing of experience from all our
activities and at all levels is widely encouraged
and expatriation between countries contributes
to this. Soletanche Bachy actively promotes
diversity and wishes to offer equal opportunities
guarantees, especially in terms of gender
equality.
THE CHARTER, THE GROUP’S LIVING
MEMORY
During its history, Soletanche Bachy has
developed its own set of ethics. The Group has
translated this into a statement of professional
practices laid down in a Charter which
particularly lays emphasis on:

travelling to work abroad, but also creates
opportunities of rapid career progression and
regular changes of post. Moreover there are
many alternative career paths between
activities and these create further
opportunities for personal development.
PERSONAL SAFETY ABOVE ALL
Safety performance is the precondition of all

of quality and of reliability. The solutions devised by our experts
are based on a proven capacity to perform them and carry them
out in practice.
40 - 41
Expertise
The design of structures that interact with the
ground requires a particular approach in which
theory and practice must be balanced by sound
experience. The Soletanche Bachy Group has,
over many years, developed a very high
research capacity (125 engineers are dedicated
to this occupation), and have an acknowledged
excellence which results from a combination
of the following elements:
- an “open minded” culture that is favourable
for alternative designs using all available
technology to adapt what is to be constructed
to the ground conditions,
- a strong design network combining a technical
department, a central design office, a subsidiary
Sol-Expert International and our various design
offices in the main subsidiaries,
Gas terminal at Zeebrugge, (Belgium). The
three-dimensional analysis of the potential
for buckling of the diaphragm wall allowed
the adoption of an alternative in which the
39.5 m deep wall thickness was reduced to
1.200 mm from the 1.500 mm shown on
the tender drawings and the need for an
800 mm lining eliminated.

are all in daily contact with the practical
realities of specialty. This team organises an
internal network of specialists from the Group
across the world and this creates an extremely
fertile environment for development of new
ideas. Our R&D external partners are fundamental
research laboratories and universities. Soletanche
Bachy organises major research programmes
within the European Union and in countries where
its main subsidiaries are based.

Sustainable
development Continuous
improvement
In 2009 we made further progress in our ongoing effort to
enhance safety and reduce environmental impact in France
and abroad.
48 - 49
Sustainable
development
Following the dual OHSAS 18001 and ISO
14001 certifications awarded to Soletanche
Bachy (including the Montereau equipment
depot) and its specialised subsidiaries such as
Bessac, we continued our endeavours to
enhance safety and reduce our environmental
impact in France and abroad. For example, our
British subsidiary Bachy Soletanche Ltd, which
is ISO 14000:2004 certified and has an
HS(G)65 Guideline compliant accident
prevention and safety management system,
added its Westpile and Simplex subsidiaries
to its certification scope in 2009.

Bachy Soletanche Ltd also adopted an
ambitious sustainable development
programme, which was kicked off in 2008 with
a special external review (the “Sustainability
Review”) by the RPS consultancy. All the RPS
conclusions and recommendations were taken
on board in an action plan drawn up in 2009
and overseen by a Sustainable Development
Committee reporting directly to General
Management. The Soletanche Freyssinet
holding company also appointed a Sustainable
Development project manager in 2009 to
support this action taken at company level.
Controlling the environmental
impact of our sites
Action taken on French worksites to control
environmental impact has concentrated
on priority issues: pollution control, chemicals
storage and waste sorting with the rollout
and application of the Tribox system.
Internal audits were carried out on the
worksites to monitor compliance with the
measures introduced. All new in-house training
courses offered by the company now also
include an environmental section.
SUSTAINABLE
Research and development,
eco -design
In 2010, we embarked on the development
of a multi-criteria environmental analysis tool
that will enable us to assess the environmental
properties and impacts of construction
solutions from the design stage onward.
This approach builds on a longstanding
Soletanche Bachy research and development

tradition aimed at improving the quality of our
processes and products and reducing their
environmental impact, with a special focus on:
Louvre work site - Arts of Islam, awning to camouflage
the works.
- reducing our consumption of raw materials
and generation of excavated materials, reducing noise and worksite duration and
visibility, - managing sludges and excavated
materials through the widespread use of such
processes as Geomix, Trenchmix and Springsol.
Coping with our customers’
environmental issues
As part of its move into environmental
business lines, Soletanche Bachy is steadily
expanding its offering, developing the
processes and expertise needed to solve our
customers’ existing environmental problems
(soil remediation, waste treatment,
environmental monitoring, geothermal energy).
These solutions are provided by our specialised
subsidiaries such as Sol Environment, SolData
and MCCF.

DEVELOPMENT
Accident prevention and safety
The company’s commitment to accident
prevention continues with our ongoing effort
to reinforce our worksite accident prevention
culture, including the creation of a dedicated
in-house blog, special audiovisual tools and a
video in which employees talk about accidents
they experienced. We have begun
disseminating the accident prevention – safety
tools throughout the company, translating
them into several languages, and this effort will
continue throughout 2010. The in-depth
programme is supplemented by specific action
taken within the international subsidiaries.
Examples are the “Homesafe” campaign
carried out by Bachy Soletanche Ltd, which
aims to change behaviour both inside and
outside the workplace.
(training stepped up)
Training and Human Resources
Training was stepped up in 2009, with a 30%
increase in the number of activities.
Threefourths of the training courses were
devised and implemented in-house.
The programme enables us to transfer
competencies relating to our specialised
techniques. Several new courses for all
categories of personnel were added to the
catalogue of training programmes on offer.
To track and control any discrimination,
the company changed a
number of indicators and
procedures in accordance
with recommendations made
by Vigeo following its diversity audit in 2008.
The proportion of women in the workforce
is specially tracked; it has now reached
29% among young engineers under the
age of 30.
