E-News 47 [May 9-13 , 2016]
Mr. Chen Namchaisiri, the Chairman of the
Federation of Thai Industries told the audiences
coming for the founding of the new Institute
under the F.T.I. that Thailand remained to be the
agricultural country as a large number of its population still lived on agriculture for their livelihood.
Several of its agricultural produces have plagued
with lots of problems including the natural disasters risk, the failed attempt to increase plant’s
productivity, the lack of proper linkages among its
subsectors and the streams of production from
upstream to downstream. Members of F.T.I. are
directly concerned with those impacts, therefore
have deemed it their role to act as the growth
engine for the agricultural sector. Various basic
fields include the agriculture for foods, energy
and non-food products comprising e.g. forest
products. Improvements need to be done on for
the whole stream of production through the innovation, knowledges and information technology in
levelling up the production and processing sectors as well as their marketing which touches
upon all other vital aspects which will yield a sus-
tainability for natural resource and environment.
Mr. Smai Leesakul, the Chairman of the Institute
enumerated 7 main objectives of the Institute as follows:
1.To promote, support and work in response to the
demand of development of agro-based industry as service
to all members of F.T.I.;
2.To advise and act as a representative for all agrobased industrialists in the coordination on policy and implementation of works related to both the government and private sectors;
3.To level up value added on all agricultural produces
from downstream to upstream by resorting to research &
development (R&D), technological advancements and innovations to yield the agro-based products that are in demand
with quality, safety and eco-friendliness to the environment
together with greater added value to the products along the
total agro-based value chain;
4.To act as a center of the database for all agrobased products;
5.To promote and build up the standard for quality
audit, guarantee, certification and the international standard
for the whole stream. This is in response to the need of production sector, trading sector and marketing;
6.To promote and build up good governance for the
agro-based product chain;
7.To build up markets, marketing opportunities and
2
competitive advantages in all
forms.
The agro-based products
will comprise 3 main subsectors:
1) Food agro-based products
2) Non-food agro-based products and 3) Energy agro-based
products.
The collaboration with 5
bodies include the Ministry of
Agriculture and Cooperative, the
Ministry of Natural Resources
and Environment, the Ministry of Industry, the Ministry of
Commerce and the Kasetsart University. All these bodies
were parties to the MoU signatories
Mr. Smai also touched upon the institute’s initiative to
pioneer into setting up Thailand Forest Certification Council
or TFCC which will come under purview of the Institute for
Agro-Industry that Thailand is new to the certification of forest. In following the Forest Stewardship Council of the FSC
the Institute has studied in comparison with other neighbors
model e.g. the Malaysian Timber Certification Council, the
Indonesian Forestry Certification Cooperation (IFCC). The
Thai standard will follow TISI 14061 which is equivalent to
the PEFC. This will be followed by the initiative to introduce to ASEAN as ASEAN standard later on.
