HEAD COACH WENDY LARRY
Position: Head Coach
Record: Overall: 588-223/26 seasons
At ODU: 539-192/23 seasons)
Success is synonymous with the Lady Monarch basketball...something Wendy Larry has achieved from every position possible. For Larry, the love affair with Old Dominion does not
merely begin in 1987 when she was named head coach, but spans three decades full of history.
From one of the first women student-athletes to receive grant-in-aid to the beginning of an illustrious coaching career as a graduate assistant to an assistant coach under one of
the legends in the business to an impeccable list of achievements at the helm of a program, Wendy Larry has at the forefront of one of the biggest collegiate women’s basketball
programs in history. In her 30 plus years associated with Old Dominion her long list of accomplishments continue to grow. During the 2009-10 season, the program reached a
monumental benchmark with its 900th win, of which Coach Larry has been a part of nearly 800 either as player, assistant or head coach. Old Dominion became just the third school in
history to reach the 900-win mark.
As the head coach of the Old Dominion women’s basketball program now for over two decades, Larry’s teams have reached astonishing 20 NCAA Tournaments, captured a NCAA
record setting 17-straight Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Titles, collected over 500 victories, and continue a historic and iconic Lady Monarch tradition year-in and year-out.
Considered one of the elite coaches in the continuing growing world of women’s basketball, she has supplied further prestige and fame to what is the Lady Monarch women’s
basketball dynasty. Old Dominion teams have always been teams of ambition and determination with their passion to succeed found starting from the top down. Positioning herself as
a true leader in her profession, Larry has led her teams to 19, 20+ wins seasons over her tenure. In 26 years as a head coach, she has compiled an impressive 588-223 record and
as the head of the Lady Monarch program, has won an impressive 73.7 percent of her games (539-192). Her Old Dominion teams have been the dominant force in the CAA, including
assembling what was known as the “The Streak,” consisting of 113 consecutive regular and post-season conference victories from 1995-2001. The Lady Monarchs have gone undefeated nine times and have suffered more than three conference losses in a season just twice.
Larry’s achievements have not gone without recognition. She has been the recipient of ten Coach of the Year awards from three different leagues, most recently in 2010 with her
eighth CAA Coach of the Year nod. She has also been recognized on the national level as well with WBCA District III, RCA, Sporting News, and United States Women’s Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) Coach of the Year accolades.
Returning to her alma mater as head coach of the Lady Monarchs in 1987, Larry immediately made her impact, being named the Sun Belt Coach of the Year as her squad advanced to
the NCAA Tournament. During the next two seasons, Old Dominion collected over 20 wins each year and advanced to second round NCAA play, posting marks of 23-9 (1988-89) and
21-10 (1989-90). In 1991-92, the team posted a 20-11 mark and advanced to the NCAA East Region.
The following season saw Larry and Old Dominion reach the NCAA Mideast second round with a record of 22-8. The Lady Monarchs reached the East Regional Round with a 25-6
ledger in 1993-94 and then the Sweet Sixteen in 1995-96 with a 29-3 mark.
In the late 90’s, Old Dominion enjoyed a resurgence of national success with an appearance in the 1997 NCAA National Championship game against the Lady Vols of Tennessee in
Cincinnati, Ohio. Closing out the `90s, the Lady Monarchs were regulars in the “Sweet 16.”
Larry’s Lady Monarchs have remained a force to be reckoned with into the next century. Continuing their winning ways, Old Dominion remained the juggernaut of the CAA and danced
onto “Elite Eight” in 2002 upsetting Georgia, Purdue, and Kansas State along the way, as well as a captivating “Sweet 16” march in 2008. The Lady Monarchs enthralled a national
ESPN audience in 2008 with a thrilling overtime upset second round victory over Virginia and Old Dominion finished the year ranked 10th in the both the Associated Press and ESPN/
USA Today Poll with a 31-5 overall record, the most wins since the Lady Monarchs’ national championship appearance.
Larry’s success stories have also transcended to the professional ranks. Nine of her former players have been drafted by the WNBA. Following the 2002 season, Larry witnessed four
of her former Old Dominion student-athletes reach the pro ranks as Old Dominion joined Connecticut with the most athletes selected in the draft. In fact, once a Monarch, always a
Monarch held true for former Lady Monarchs Ticha Penicheiro and Hamchetou Maiga-Ba as they won the 2005 WNBA Championship with Sacramento Monarchs. Maiga-Ba, now with
the Houston Comets, was also featured on the world’s stage as she joined her native Mali national team to the Beijing Olympics in August of 2008.
Larry’s impact has also reached the coaching ranks. Old Dominion legend and former assistant Anne Donovan led Charlotte in 2001 to the WNBA Finals, Seattle to the WNBA championship trophy in 2004, and most recently as the head coach of the gold-medal winning Team USA at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. She has since returned to the collegiate ranks, taking
over the head coaching position at Seton Hall University. Additionally, Alisa Scott, a six-year member of Larry’s staff, served an assistant coach for the three-time WNBA Champion
Houston Comets.
Prior to her current post at Old Dominion, Larry was the head coach at nearby Virginia Wesleyan College from 1978-79 and Arizona from 1985-87. She was named the PAC West
Coach of the Year during the 1985-86 campaign as her Wildcat team posted a 19-9 record. In addition, Larry spent one year as the head coach at Cape Henry Collegiate High School
in Virginia Beach.
Larry first returned to her alma mater under the guidance of women’s basketball hall of famer Marianne Stanley for the 1979-80 season as a graduate assistant coach before being
elevated to a full-time assistant. During that span, she was part of two Old Dominion national championships - 1980 (AIAW) and 1985 (NCAA).
An active member of several committees and boards away from the hardwood, she served a two-year term as President of the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and
is a member of the USA Basketball Collegiate Committee. She has also been involved with the USA Today Coaches Poll board, the NCAA East Regional Women’s Basketball Advisory
Committee, and the advisory committee for Coaches vs. Cancer.
Larry is also committed to many civic organizations through the Hampton Roads area. She has served on the Board of Directors for the Hampton Roads Habitat for Humanity and
created the “Wendy Walk” to help raise money for Habitat’s cause. Wendy and her team are also supporters of “The Buddy Walk of Hampton Roads,” an effort to raise money and
awareness of Down’s Syndrome. She has also been involved with Coaches Care in an effort to help raise money for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Larry also served as the honorary
chair of the 2003 Race for the Cure in Hampton Roads. Her and her teams over the past years have been active with the annual race, as well as the annual “Hoops for a Cure” event at
the Ted Constant Convocation Center, which helps raise money for the Tidewater Chapter of the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
A native of Bloomingdale, New Jersey and a huge New York Yankees fan, Larry and her boat, Time Out, call Virginia Beach home.

ODU WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
2009-10 SEASON RECAP
The beginning of the 2009-10 season was marked by unfamiliar territory for the Lady Monarchs, as they were selected to finish third
in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA), marking the first time in nearly two decades the team was not selected to win the league.
The end, however, seemed very familiar as head coach Wendy Larry racked up her 10th career Coach of the Year honor by guiding ODU
back to the CAA Championship game for the 18th time in 19 seasons and earning the regular season title.
For the second straight year, the senior class was decimated by injuries. Pre-season All-CAA forward Jessica Canady missed five
games in the difficult non-conference schedule as she rehabbed from off-season knee surgery, while Vicki Collier also suffered another
knee injury that cut into her minutes after serving as the top reserve early in the year.
The Lady Monarchs endured the injuries as they struggled through one of the toughest non-conference slates in the nation in the first
half of the season. The non-conference schedule ranked the fifth toughest in the nation and by the end of the year, the Lady Monarchs
schedule ranked 27th toughest overall. The team suffered five straight losses to open the season, but that included four teams
receiving votes in the national rankings.
To start off the year, there were some grand individual performances, as juniors Jasmine Parker, Shadasia Green and sophomore Tia
Lewis all netted career-high performances in the first five games, with 24 points each. Parker knocked down her new career-best on
the road at #20 Maryland. Then, in the Cancun Thanksgiving Classic, both Green and Lewis had 24 against defending national runnerup Louisville in a close battle that ODU narrowly lost, 82-75.
The Lady Monarchs returned home to win two of three in the Constant Center, dropping Ole Miss and Hampton, who would both go on
to play in the 2010 postseason. Lewis hauled in a career-high tying 17 rebounds against the Rebels while a balanced attack led the
squad past the Pirates, with four players in double-figures. ODU closed out the non-conference slate with a pair of road losses to St.
Joseph’s and #4 Tennessee.
Opening league play, though, the Lady Monarchs would turn around their rough start. A one-point victory on the road against Delaware,
60-59, would continue ODU’s perfect mark in conference openers, now at 19-0. It was Parker that took a key charge with just over a
minute remaining and on the next possession, knocked down the go-ahead three-pointer to lead ODU past the Fightin’ Blue Hens. She
finished with 22 points in the win, her second of three 20-point performances.
After a heartbreaking triple overtime setback to Northeastern in game two of the conference season, the Lady Monarchs turned up
the heat and ran off eight straight victories. None of which were as satisfying as the 67-58 win on the road in Harrisonburg, as ODU
repaid the Dukes for a home loss a year ago by dropping the team that was receiving votes in the national polls. Old Dominion held
JMU to just 19 first-half points in the game and kept All-American Dawn Evans quiet, while holding the team to just 2-of-23 shooting
from long range.
The season waned on as each game was as competitive as the last. The Lady Monarchs excelled in tight games, winning 11 of 15
decided by single digits. At Georgia State, Tia Lewis sunk a layup while getting fouled with 0.6 seconds remaining on the clock to eek
out a two-point road victory. Then, in Richmond, the Lady Monarchs locked up the 2009-10 regular season conference championship
and the number one seed at the CAA Tournament as rookie Jackie Cook scored eight pivotal points late to lead ODU to another two-point
win, 67-65.
As the top seed, the Lady Monarchs enjoyed a first round bye before entertaining Northeastern in the quarterfinal round. ODU avenged
the triple overtime loss by breezing past the Huskies, 68-49, to advance and face Delaware in the semifinals. Led by CAA Player and
Rookie of the Year Elena Delle Donne, the Fightin’ Blue Hens battled against the Lady Monarchs, but for the third time in 2009-10, the
Lady Monarchs won a game over Delaware by three points or less. ODU advanced to the title game with a 50-49 win in an absolutely
amazing comeback, erasing a 12-point halftime deficit with balanced play and a pair of highlight-reel buckets in the final two minutes
from sophomore forward Mairi Buchan.
ODU would fall for the first time in a CAA Championship game to host James Madison, in a 67-53 final, but the Lady Monarchs were
poised for their 18th postseason appearance in 19 years nonetheless. Old Dominion earned a trip to the Women’s National Invitation
Tournament (WNIT) and hosted a first round game against Patriot League regular season champion American University. Tia Lewis led
the way with 16 points and nine rebounds as ODU dispatched the Eagles, 63-55, advancing to face Providence College on the road.
Lewis again scored a team-high 18 points, but the Friars ended the Lady Monarchs season with a 76-61 win in the WNIT Second
Round.
The team hauled in several postseason accolades, led by Jasmine Parker. The junior guard earned Second Team All-CAA honors as
well as earning an All-Defensive Team nod. She was also named to the CAA All-Tournament team with Tia Lewis. Earning Third Team
All-CAA honors were senior Jessica Canady and junior Shadasia Green, while head coach Wendy Larry earned her eighth CAA Coach
of the Year recognition and tenth overall.
The year was another benchmark season as Old Dominion became just the third program in history to reach the 900-win mark, while
also becoming just the eighth to play in over 1200 games. ODU also saw 11 former Lady Monarch legends named to the CAA’s 25th
Anniversary Team as part of a celebration honoring the greatest athletes in the last 25 years of CAA play. Senior Jessica Canady also
became the 27th Lady Monarch to reach the 1,000-point plateau, rounding out her playing career with 1,056 points.
