2013 HCLL Season Program - Hastings Community Little League
Hastings Community Little League HOME OF THE 2012 CANADIAN U E CHAMPIONS LITTLE LEAG 2013 Program www.hcll.ca A Message from the President Welcome to the 2013 baseball season at Hastings Community Little League (HCLL) home of the 2009 and 2012 Major Canadian National Champions, and the 2009, 2010, and 2011 Minor Provincial Champions! 2012 was another very exciting year for us with HCLL winning the Canadian National Championship and representing Canada at the Little League World Series for the second time in four years. I would like to extend our congratulations to all the players, coaches and parents involved! We did it! HCLL has been officially chosen to host the 2016 Canadian Little League Championship tournament at Hastings Field. There has been a lot of hard work done to reach this point, and even more required to help complete this vision. I would like to acknowledge the great work done by Richard Saunders over many years in leading our efforts to host this tournament. Richard will also service as Chair for the 2016 National Championships. I would also like to extend our sincere thanks and gratitude to all our sponsors, and volunteers from our league and community whose continued support of Hastings Little League over the years has helped turn our organization into what it is today. With ongoing support from the PNE, Vancouver Parks Board, Hastings Community Association and other potential partners, our plans for a playable, multiple diamond park is getting ever closer. Our partnership with the City of Vancouver and the Vancouver Parks Board will help ensure our league moves forward in a positive and productive manner to ensure a smooth transformation as planned upgrades to Hastings Field are completed. The next few years will require a great deal of hard work from your HCLL board, and I would like to extend a personal thanks to all current and past members whose dedication and many hours of work have shaped our park and local community in many positive ways. Our website continues to be updated with all league related information for parents, coaches and volunteers. Registration will also be done completely online for this coming 2013 season. As a league we are growing each year, and in order to meet this demand we will be using Falaise Park as an extension of Hastings Little League. This will ensure that all divisions will have a chance to play as many games as possible during our short season. With everyone’s help and cooperation, we can continue to build and maintain a first class (continued) 3 community sports organization whose reputation seems to grow with each successful year. Let’s all work together to create a positive environment so future generations can play the game we all love. Coaching and player development will continue to be a priority for us in 2013. We will be looking at providing additional training in the Rookie, Minor and Major divisions. Our success as a league comes from the continued and ongoing development of our coaching staff that in turn can pass along their knowledge to all the children in our organization. Once again, I would like to extend a special thanks to all our volunteers, parents, coaches, and board members who donate hundreds of hours each year to make Hastings Little League such a special place to play! Little League is a family affair that gives parents and children an opportunity to spend time together. Whether we are coaching the players, selling hot dogs in the concession, or raking and lining the field, it’s fun to be part of Hastings Community Little League. We know that your son or daughter will appreciate the benefits of your enthusiasm and involvement in his or her Little League experience. Have a great season. — Dave Jenkins, President 4 Hastings Community Little League back at Little League World Series in 2012 After representing Canada at the 2009 Little League World Series, Hastings Little League returned three years later, after our 2012 Major All-Star team had won the Canadian Little League Championship. Their journey in the summer of 2012, started with winning the BC Little League District 6 championship, where they went undefeated, outscoring their opponents 143 to 3 in 5 games played in the tournament. From there, it was on to Trail, BC where they won 6 out of 7 games to win the Little League BC Provincial Championship tournament in July. In those 7 games they outscored their opponents 100 to 14. It was then on to the Canadian Little League Championship tournament played in Edmonton, Alberta in early August. The Hastings All-Stars defeated the Prairies team 11 to 1 in the final game to win the Canadian Little League Championship. The team was dominant throughout the tournament going undefeated in 7 games while scoring 79 runs and allowing only 2 runs. After stopping in Toronto to be recognized as Canadian Champions at a Blue Jays game, it was on to Williamsport Pennsylvania to represent Canada at the 2012 Little League World Series in August. Canada (Hastings) defeated Mexico 13 to 9 in their first game at the Little League World Series on August 17th. Canada played the Mexico champions from Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas and came ready to win. In the first inning alone, the team sent through a total of 13 batters, scoring seven runs. Canada played their second game against the Latin America champions from Aguadulce, Panama on August 18th. They were defeated by a strong Panama team 8 to 3. The loss shifted Canada into the losers’ bracket and a game against the Caribbean champions from Pariba Little League of Willemstad, Curacao, on August 20th. Canada played a nail biter of a game that went back and forth throughout. The Caribbean took the lead first in the top of the second, 1-0, before Canada evened things up in the third and pulled ahead of the Caribbean in bottom of the fourth inning, 3-1. However in the fifth inning, the Caribbean sealed Canada’s fate with a 3-run inning which Canada could not come back from, losing, 4-3. Congratulations to our 2012 Canadian Champion Hastings All-Star team. We at the Hastings Community Little League are very proud of their significant accomplishments in winning the District, BC Provincial and Canadian Championships, and representing Canada so well at the 2012 Little League World Series. The team included players: Kolby Buljevic, Cole Dalla Zanna, Cortez D’Alessandro, Noah Hanson-Stafford, Carson Ho, Carter Kada-Wong, Steven Moretto, Thomas Neal, Cez Paguio, Matteo Porcellato, Nicholas Williams and Ataru Yamaguchi. The team was led by Manager, Vito Bordignon and Coaches, Mike Mitzel, Rob Moretto and John Wong. 5 2013 BOARD OF DIRECTORS President . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Dave Jenkins . . . . . . . . . . .604-315-8897 1st Vice President . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Peter Lattimer . . . . . . . . . . .604-916-0253 2nd Vice President . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Cecilia Kalaw . . . . . . . . . . .604-812-8689 Treasurer . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Vito Bordignon . . . . . . . . . . .604-805-2739 Secretary . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Lina Perrotta . . . . . . . . . . .604-970-6655 Player Agent . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Kevin Clegg . . . . . . . . . . . .604-828-6043 Umpire-in-Chief, Minor & Major . . . . . . . . . . . .Egidio Pasin . . . . . . . . . . . .604-813-1745 Marketing/Communications Coordinator . . . . .Neil Cusati . . . . . . . . . . . .604-209-4000 Safety Officer . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Christine Bayliss . . . . . . . . . .604-719-5044 Equipment Coordinator . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Dale Weisbrod . . . . . . . . . . .604-619-6398 Uniform Coordinator . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Brenda Platzner . . . . . . . . . .604-961-4252 Major Coordinator . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Todd Shewfelt . . . . . . . . . . .604-417-8579 Minor Coordinator . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Angela Sorace . . . . . . . . . . .604-551-9576 Rookie Coordinator . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Kevin Clegg . . . . . . . . . . . .604-828-6043 T-Ball Coordinator . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Kin Mak . . . . . . . . . . . . .604-762-7171 2016 Coordinator . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Richard Saunders . . . . . . . . .604-813-8376 Concession Coordinator . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Evelyn Larocque . . . . . . . . . .604-512-7014 Score Keeping Coordinator . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Zoe Krickan Fundraising Coordinator . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Kerry Killbride . . . . . . . . . . .604-306-4070 Draft Coordinator . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Joe Van Snellenberg . . . . . . . . .604-999-7996 Registration Coordinator . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Corrina Latimer . . . . . . . . . .604-441-4675 Tournament Coordinator . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Bruno Tortolano . . . . . . . . . .604-299-1250 Website & Information Coordinator . . . . . . . . .Roy Wydeman . . . . . . . . . . .604-254-9343 Volunteer Coordinator . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Karen Olivieri . . . . . . . . . . .604-253-8857 Grounds Crew . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Dave Izatt . . . . . . . . . . . . .604-805-5311 Member @ Large . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Tony Olivieri . . . . . . . . . . .604-253-8857 Member @ Large . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Troy Mazzucco . . . . . . . . . . .604-254-9631 Member @ Large . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Brad Inouye . . . . . . . . . . . .604-291-6506 Member @ Large . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Bob Hicks Member @ Large . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Jack Chow . . . . . . . . . . . .604-761-7285 Member @ Large . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .John Wong . . . . . . . . . . . .604-818-7996 Hastings Little League Park Address: 3157 East Pender Street, Vancouver Concession Phone Number: (604).253-5343 Website: www.hcll.ca 6 Program Design - Les Gallus 2013 SEASON CALENDAR & EVENTS Opening Day – Saturday April 6 @ 10:00 am Don Sheard Majors Tournament – April 6 - 29 @ Trout Lake Team Picture Day – Saturday, April 13 HCLL Day at the PNE – Saturday, May 11 Rookie Tournament – May 18 -20 @ Trout Lake Hyack Major Tournament – May 24 -26 @ New Westminster HCLL Major, Minor & Rookie Playoffs – June Major Interlock Playoff Tournament – June Minor Interlock Playoff Tournament – June Closing Day Sunday, June 2 @ 10:00 am Annual General Meeting Wednesday June 12 @ 6:00 pm District 6 T-Ball Tournament – Starts on June 22 @ Hastings Field District 6 Rookie Tournament – Starts on June 22 @ Hastings Field District 6 Minor Tournament – Starts on June 29 @ Trout Lake District 6 Major Tournament – Starts on July 6 @ New Westminster Minor Provincial Tournament – July 13 - 20 @ Layritze, Victoria Major Provincial Tournament – July 20 -July 27 @ Kerrisdale Fred Ritchie Tournament – July 20 - 30th @ Hastings Field Canadian Little League Championship – August 3 -11 @ Glace Bay, Nova Scotia Little League World Series - August 15 - 25 @ Williamsport, Pennsylvania 7 Little League Baseball Canada in our world Little League Baseball Canada was founded in 1951. Thanks to all the folks who help out and to those who haven’t, come and join us it’s great fun. 10 ALL-STAR AND SELECT TEAMS COACHES AND PLAYER SELECTIONS Every year parents and players ask about All-Star and Select teams. When are the tryouts and how are the players selected? Division All-Star teams are selected for the Rookie, Minor and Major divisions each season to compete in Little League tournaments after the regular season. Age specific Select teams may also be formed depending on the availability of coaches and tournaments in any given year. In the past we have had 7, 9 and 11 year old Select teams represent HCLL in various tournaments. A notice will be issued by the Division Coordinator regarding the tryout dates, times and locations for All-Star and Select teams in each division. The parents will be informed of the number of games, tournaments, practice commitments, additional team fees, and any volunteering that is required. Any player chosen for an All-Star or Select team will be assessed additional fees and a refundable uniform deposit. Managers of the All-Star and Select teams are selected by the HCLL Board based on written applications which are submitted for their review before June 1st each year. The appointed Managers will each be responsible for the All-Star and Select selections for their respective teams. The Manager will also select his/her assistant coaches which will be approved by the League President. Any player may try out for any All-Star or Select team for which they are eligible to play based on their age and residence eligibility requirements. For All-Star and Select team selection, you must play on a league team, live within the HCLL Little League boundaries and be of legal age (age as of April 30th in the current year) for your division. For All-Star teams these ages are 7 and 8 for Rookie, 9 and 10 for Minor and 11 and 12 for Major. For Select teams, the eligible age will depend on the age category specified for each individual Select team. It is mandatory that players play within their designated division and age group for either an All-Star or Select team. Rookie age (8 year old) players who played up a division in Minor during the regular season are eligible to play on the Rookie All-Star team. Minor age (10 year old) players who played up a division in Major during the regular season are eligible to play on the Minor All-Star team. Please refer to the HCLL website for additional details regarding the selection process and criteria used in selecting players. The T-Ball All-Stars are chosen by the T-Ball Division Coordinator and All-Star coaches with no tryouts being held. Each tournament team will consist of a maximum roster of 12 players of league age (5 and 6) who played on a T-Ball or Blastball team during the regular season. 11 12 BLASTBALL TEAMS BlastBall Coordinator – Kin Mak ATHLETICS BLUE JAYS Coach: Sergio Bertani Coach: Greg Smith Adam Bertani Daniel Bertani Mia Buljevic Ethan Chiu Abigail Durant Ethan Ozeroff Kingston Pascal Ethan Ricketts Eamon Campbell Sebastian Campbell Kiera Coleman Christian Florio Gibson Nowak Amadeo Perizzolo Benjamin Smith Daragh Woods EXPOS RED SOX Coach: Brad Kram Coach: Biagio Pepe Olivia Cenedese Mia Cirotto Mason Kram Devon Lee Kiera Lee Lily Slogoski-Mullan Praise Karl Ward-Theiss Jack West Kyron Kan Heath Kennett Robbie Martignago Joana Pepe Hayden Ruus Dashiell Vaitkunas Noah Waslen Spencer White 13 ROCKIES YANKEES Coach: Lindsay Donaldson Coach: Jeremy Lovell Sheldon Boyle Sophia Filippelli Lexie McCabe Myles Repta Cora Rizzardo Hazen Stokes Clark von Hahn Kae Lin Whiton Cohen Crago Lincoln Fong Jeevan Gill Carlos Lovell Trevor Mak Jacob McBeath Blake Tagulao Haru Yarmie Blastball Rules • The League recommends that players wear Jocks (for boys) or Jills (for girls). • All players must wear long pants (no shorts). • All players must wear their baseball caps on the field. • Put your player’s name in his/her cap and batting helmet. • The Home team must supply the umpire. • Each player must have one parent/guardian at the game or practice for emergency purposes. • All players should use the washroom before the game. • When a team is at bat, all players must be in the dugout. • Players should be warned not to put their fingers in the fence. • All players bat. The Blastball Division is designed for 4 and 5 year olds (age as of April 30 in current year) who are playing baseball for the first time. This is a fast and fun game that introduces some basic concepts of baseball without the stress of learning the more complex game of T-Ball. There are 5 - 8 players per team and each player gets an opportunity to hit the ball each inning. In Blastball there are 3 innings played and an inning is complete when each player has had a turn at bat. The T-Ball Division is designed for 5 to 6 year olds (age as of April 30 in current year) who want to learn the basic fundamentals of baseball. It is recommended that 5 year olds with no previous baseball experience register for Blastball. Team sizes range from 8 to 12 players. In T-Ball, everyone bats and players rotate fielding positions. The Rookie Division is for 7 to 9 year olds (age as of April 30 in current year). The Rookie division is an instructional division where a pitching arm is used, scores and standings are kept, outs are recorded and all players play defensively in each inning rotating between positions in the infield and outfield.. Players are taught the fundamentals of baseball such that they are exposed to playing positions and are taught throwing, catching, batting, defensive ready position and running the bases. The Minor Division is for 9 to 11 year olds (age as of April 30 in current year). In the Minor division, players are evaluated and selected onto teams at the start of the season. Batters face live pitching for the first time and a maximum of nine players are on the field defensively for each inning. Players are rotated through the infield and outfield positions and may sit for one or two innings at the discretion of the coaches. All players bat through the order. The Major Division is for 11 and 12 year olds (age as of April 30 in current year) and it represents the highest level of competition at Hastings Community Little League. In the Major Division, there are usually 10 to 12 players per team and they are selected onto teams after an evaluation process before the start of the season. There are a maximum of nine players in the field defensively for each inning. Players are rotated through the infield and outfield positions and may sit for one or two innings at the discretion of the coaches. 15 T-BALL TEAMS T-Ball Coordinator – Kin Mak ATHLETICS BLUE JAYS Coaches: Lynn Berardi Peter Jacoboni Coaches: Paul Leibel Jack Wong Halle Berardi Jane Childerhose Joh'nell Cleveland Paul Jacoboni Georgia Knight Jessica Knight Sheamus McGarry Sabin Nowak Jack Ponton Freeman Ridley Kaden Anderson Jaiden Carpenter Zennea Chen Jason Dell-Ng Angelo Delli Santi Nicholas Fok Domenic LaQuaglia Charlotte Leibel Luciano Pepe Ben Waslen Ryan Wong EXPOS MARINERS Coaches: Kevin Clegg, Peter Lattimer Alex Santarelli Coach: Courtney Davies Nick Almeida Zachary Clegg Liam Ferdinandez Ariana Jaberi Domenic Jir Luke Lattimer Reilly Ma Morgan Nelson Scott Price Daniel Santarelli Jacob Shung 16 Cynthia Connor Quinn Davies Brandan Desjarlais Oscar Dugas Dylan Fokes Joseph Payne Sage Smoke Devlan Snow Beatrice Stasiuk Wyatt Stasiuk Emerson Toporoski PIRATES RED SOX Coach: Marco Cavasin Coaches: Garnet Nelson Terry Trotic Noah Akasaka Luca Campanile Alessandro Cavasin Stefania Cirotto Cristian Coletta Tyson Eng Caleb Parrotta Elijah Perozzo Garrett Picariello Julia Reale Charlotte Ron Stella Rose Elliott Blunt Sadie Coleman LeRoy Darren Maeve Dawson Adam Deacon Stephanie Dierks Samantha Nelson Kaeden Pescitelli Hannah Stone Markus Trotic Romano Unti ROCKIES TIGERS Coach: Jeff Hanratty Coaches: Rick Tang Don Williams Rocco Hanratty Ava Henry Chanton Hopkins Elsie Iwankow Hunter Morgan Trajan Peers Andreola Pietro Gabriel Poutt Annika Schultz Austin Webster Kian Khadempour Tate Macmillan Tigers ConnerMacVicar Tigers JordanMak Tigers AdamMaros Tigers CallahanMcCullagh Tigers SiennaTang Tigers RachelWallis Tigers JudahWilliams Tigers TrevorWong 17 WHITE SOX YANKEES Coaches: Dave Hamar Stephen Symons Coaches: Richard Martinez Harlem Anthony Ashlyn Black Caelan Black Shaylah Black Micah Calapiz Indi Champagne Bronwen Holmes Mylo Raffaele-Hamar Cael Read Kyle Symons 18 Marko Cikes Nicholas Dato Canzian Ariel Cooper Remo Giovinazzo Marco Krumpak Marco La Chimea Hunter MacDonald Dominic Martinez Brock Piendl Devanand Rana 19 Volunteer Legends at Hastings Community Little League Hastings Community Little League (HCLL) is a volunteer run organization and all our coaches, umpires and league officials are volunteers. We also have parents heavily involved at all games handling things such as field preparation, concession duty, selling 50/50 tickets, score keeping etc. All our volunteers and parents give their time to provide a healthy and wholesome family oriented baseball program for the children of our community. Many of our volunteers are parents of existing players, but Hastings Little League is also extremely fortunate to have many volunteers whose children have graduated, whose children aren’t yet old enough to play or who don’t have children of their own. Without their ongoing dedication to HCLL, we would not be able to offer and maintain the quality of our baseball program at a reasonable cost for families. We gratefully acknowledge here the ongoing commitment and support of many volunteers, past and present, who have dedicated so many years and hours of their time to Hastings Community Little League. We are referring to them as our Volunteer Legends at HCLL. Vito Bordignon – Vito is currently Treasurer at HCLL and Major Division team manager. Vito played at HCLL from 1973 to 1978 and started coaching with his brother Angelo in 1983. He has managed a team in the Majors division since 1996 and has been league treasurer since1995. Vito has also been the Major All-Star team manager since 1999 where he has had much success including two Provincial and Canadian Little League Championships in 2009 and 2012 when his HCLL All-Star teams represented Canada at the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. Scott and Grace Bronwing – Scott and Grace first got involved in volunteering at HCLL 40 years ago in 1973. Scott initially got involved after being asked by a neighbor to help coach because of his softball background. Scott both coached and umpired and served as a Vice President. Grace was head scorekeeper for many years and also served as President of the league. Grace was also part a Ladies auxiliary that ran the concession stand - first from a table with a coleman stove and then onto a revamped Trailer. Scott and Grace were also involved with building a small shed on the property leading up to the concession stand that is there today. Jim Gregor – Jim has volunteered at HCLL for over 45 years starting in 1967 when he coached a Major team and then continued to coach teams in the Minor division for 5 years. He eventually went on to coach the Junior (13 year olds) team and ran the entire program at HCLL. Over the years, Jim has held almost every Board position at one time or another and was twice President of the league for a total of 5 years. Jim also took our first team to the Provincials in 1988. He was also the Umpire-in-Chief at HCLL and umpired for many years. Jim is probably best known as the “50-50 man”. Over the years, he has likely helped raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for various Little 20 Volunteer Legends continued League organizations around the province. Many leagues have asked him to head up their 50-50 programs for various District, Provincial and National tournaments. Jim led the 50-50 program and team for the 2001 Little Mountain and 2006 Whalley Little League National Championship tournaments. Last year, he played a major role in assisting with the 50-50 program at the Provincial Little League Championship tournament in Trail. Bob Hicks – Bob is currently a board member at HCLL as member at Large. He started volunteering at Hastings with his oldest son in 1990 and his youngest son finished playing in 2007. He has been involved in various volunteer activities over the years including helping to coach his younger son in T-Ball. Many people would recognize Bob with the many days he has spent running the barbecue at games over the years. Given all the time he has spent behind the barbecue, he has earned the nickname “Barbecue Bob” at Hastings. Dave Izatt – Dave is currently a board member at HCLL and has been Ground Maintenance Coordinator since 2001 when his son started playing. He initially got started helping to cut the grass and at the preseason work party. He quickly took control and has done great work ever since maintaining our field in excellent condition for baseball each season. Dave also coordinates all our league hats, shirts, sponsorship banners and league pin designs each season. Dave was also a Co-Vice President from 2006 to 2011and has played a key role in our efforts to upgrade our field at Hastings Field for the 2016 national championship tournament. Dave Jenkins – Dave is currently the President at HCLL and first got involved as a coach with his son’s team in 2006 and continued to coach until 2009. He joined the Board in 2008 as Tournament Director and replaced Richard Saunders as league President in 2009. Dave continues to devote a lot of time and effort into working with our volunteers, parents, coaches and community partners which has led to great success at all levels of play and a growing enrollment of players in recent years. During his time as president, Hastings has sent two teams to the Little League World Series in Williamsport. Kerry Kilbride – Kerry is currently a board member and Fundraising Coordinator at HCLL. He first got involved as a coach when his daughter started playing at Hastings in 1985 and since then has held various positions with the league including Vice president, Major Coordinator and Umpire in Chief. He has also been an Umpire for 26 years, and in 2012 was chosen to be an Umpire at the Canadian Little League Championship tournament in Edmonton. Kerry continues to lead our fundraising efforts in order to raise funds which help keep our registration fees affordable for all families. Evelyn Larocque – Evelyn is currently a board member and Concession Coordinator at HCLL. Evelyn started in 2009 when her youngest son started playing baseball at Hastings. In the last14 years, Evelyn has held a number of positions including Umpire 21 Volunteer Legends continued in Chief for Rookie Division,Major Coordinator and Board Secretary. Evelyn continues to do great work in managing our concession operation which generates significant revenue for the league each season. Corrina Lattimer - Corrina is currently a board member at HCLL and the Registration Coordinator. She started volunteering at Hastings with her oldest son in 1990 and her youngest son finished playing in 2007.
