Foreword
It’s the best and worst of times, I reckon, for artists graduating
this year.
On the upside, the sheer volume of contemporary art keeps on
growing. In spite of the economy’s woes, few galleries are closing
in London. Many, perhaps, are only just hanging on, but they
are surviving – and plenty are opening. Moreover, previously
peripatetic enterprises have found permanent locations; small
galleries have expanded; bigger ones have opened a second
space, or even a third; and foreign galleries increasingly see an
advantage in having a London presence, with the result that, for
example, Russia and Italy are well represented.
One simple measure is the number of London galleries listed
by New Exhibitions of Contemporary Art: there are now over
200, compared with 175 at the peak of the market in 2007.
Meanwhile, the major public institutions may be rotating their
shows less often, but their quality hasn’t declined. Regionally, the
commercial scene remains minimal, but the new or refitted public
galleries started before the recession have now opened, making
Nottingham, Colchester and Margate, for example,
significant destinations.
Catlin guide 14th Dec.indd 6
12/16/11 1:22 PM
The other benefit of the current scene is its sheer freedom. Not
only can pretty much anything count as art these days, pretty
much anything might be critically acclaimed. There may have
been times when, say, photography or ceramics weren’t taken
seriously, performance was cordoned off, painting was seen as
old-fashioned, or ironically detached post-modernism was de
rigeur, but I think we’re past such attitudes. Judgements can be
based on nothing more than whether the artist has something
interesting to say, and whether that’s said convincingly.
In this book we can apply that test to a giant hair dryer and
sculpture made from hair; gaudily abstract and quirkily figurative
painting; a transcription of the Bible; hand-snipped and digital
collage; and photographs in classic black and white, or found,
or peeled…
Liberty can be problematic, though. Where to start, what to do
with no orthodoxies to follow? The security of the herd is lost.
Maybe that’s why quite a few artists choose to adopt a strict
process, impose rules on themselves, or set out a creed. There’s
a liberation of a different sort in having something firm to guide
you – and to kick against. Therein lies the difference, though: you
can create constraints, but you can’t create freedom.
Catlin guide 14th Dec.indd 7
12/16/11 1:22 PM
The main downside is, of course, the economy – regardless of the
state of the art market specifically. The key point is that only a
tiny minority of practicing artists make a living purely through
their art production. Those teaching, installing, attending,
supporting or writing about the arts are under the most pressure.
The non-art jobs which provide subsistence while allowing time
for art are also in short supply. And it’s ever harder to secure
grant funding.
This year’s crop will also be among the last to have entered a
low fee system. One sometimes hears the argument that tough
times may usefully cull the less able or dedicated, and that peak
numbers – getting on for 4,000 art students graduate each year in
the UK – dilute quality. I find that unconvincing: first, because
it’s also likely to dilute the variety of students’ socio-economic
Catlin guide 14th Dec.indd 8
12/16/11 1:22 PM
backgrounds, which is surely a negative change; and, second, as
there’s no reason to think art is any different from, say, tennis, in
that the more young people play, the more likely it is that a top
class player will emerge. The other potential similarity is that
famous examples and a positive national vibe disproportionately
inspire the next generation. Britain’s art – unlike its tennis – has
had that vibe in recent decades. There must be a danger we’ll
lose it.
So, the best and worst of times may lie ahead for the artists here.
I wish them the former, which the range and strength of their
work suggests they deserve.

Preface
During the latest round of BA, MA and MFA final shows –
extending deep into November 2011 – I visited just shy of fifty
exhibitions across the UK, surveying around two thousand
artists. Hundreds more were recommended by course tutors,
collectors, gallerists, curators, bloggers and critics. The validity
of The Catlin Guide rests, in part, on such a comprehensive
survey and I remain grateful for each contribution and to
all collaborators.
Potential remains the key criteria; I’m looking for artists with the
ability to help shape the dynamic of contemporary art over the
next decade and beyond. It’s a broad remit, and one that could
conceivably make for a lopsided shortlist. A quick count reveals
that over 25% percent of these 40 artists are working with
photography – a big jump on previous years – but it is the sheer
range of ideas within the perimeters of each genre that promote a
healthy diversity.
As Paul Carey-Kent points out, it’s harder than ever to
categorise contemporary art. Have a flick through this book.
Sure, you’ll still come across photographers and painters – in
a more traditional sense – but how would you describe Jeremy
Hutchison’s practice? Or Daniel Rapley’s? The old labels
ain’t sticking.
Catlin guide 14th Dec.indd 10
12/16/11 1:22 PM
Another observation is that artists appear in no hurry to align
with a single gallery. Indeed, many of the current shortlist are
planning a period of extended studio time; an opportunity to
develop and experiment. Furthermore, new artists – not least
those previously selected for The Catlin Guide – are forging an
array of different paths. Some have launched exhibition spaces,
formed collectives or curated their own shows. Some have gone
on to further study or taken the opportunity to teach. Others
have released artists’ books, exhibited internationally or taken
part in a new clutch of artist-led fairs. All continue to shape the
dynamic of contemporary art.

The Catlin Group
Catlin Group Limited is an international speciality property/
casualty insurer and reinsurer. Working in parallel with
policyholders and their insurance brokers, we develop
imaginative and effective risk management solutions. By doing
so, our underwriters help clients realise their ambitions.
Catlin manages the largest syndicate at Lloyd’s of London, based
on premium volume, and underwrites business from hubs in
the UK, Canada, the United States, Bermuda, Europe and the
Asia-Pacific region. In total we have more than 50 offices in 20
countries, allowing us to conduct business and provide superior
service on a worldwide basis.
As one of the leading art insurers, both in the UK and
worldwide, we underwrite coverage for exhibitions and private
collections, with a wide variety of clients, including museums
and dealers. We have dedicated fine art underwriters based in
London, Cologne, Sydney and Singapore.

Art Catlin encompasses The Catlin Guide and the Catlin Art
Prize. First staged in 2007, the Catlin Art Prize recognises the
talents of recent graduates from UK art schools and provides
an arena in which to showcase their development. As part of
last year’s fifth anniversary exhibition, we further extended our
support by awarding a new prize, the Catlin Commission, to two
artists. Jasmina Cibic (a finalist in the inaugural Catlin Art Prize)
and Will Martyr (2008) were each commissioned to produce a
brand new piece of work for our collection.
Just as Catlin strives to realise the ambitions of its policyholders
through high-quality insurance underwriting, The Catlin Guide
and the Catlin Art Prize help realise the ambitions of promising
new artists.

NEW WORK:
The central drive of my practice is to blur the lines between
the established concepts of drawing: the physical and the
metaphysical. Drawing’s most core aspect – an implement for
representing the real and the physical – is also brought into
question. Mundane imagery and objects are arranged using various
methodical systems in an attempt to bridge the fault lines between
the real and the surreal, between absurdity and necessity.

NEW WORK:
We visualise the barren landscape of desire and will. Through the
cracks of our consciousness, breaking the comfort of alienation,
we catch – from time to time – glimpses of corruption, decline
and decay that belong to our very selves. The phantoms appear,
the dead change sides. Ours is a posthumous celebration.
At the start of the year I will begin a residency in Mexico,
continuing to explore themes related to death, food, celebration
and the Baroque. I am also working on a commission for the
Genesis Foundation with a view to a London exhibition during
the autumn.

NEW WORK:
My current photographic projects have focused
on the representation of material debris in the sea and
more recently on the mass accumulation of plastic in the
world’s oceans. My work aims to stimulate an emotional
response in the viewer by combining a contradiction
between the initial aesthetic attraction and a subsequent
message of awareness.
Highlighting the impact of oceanic plastic is something
I have been committed to for the past two years and
my aim is to continue to pursue this through innovative
visual interpretation.

NEW WORK:
Recent work is inspired by new media. I take components from
television programmes, photography, and the internet, and use
marks and gestures to create tension in my paintings. I try to
make synthetic summaries of what I see around me.
I’m currently studying for an MA, so constant research and
in-depth observation will continue to be a major part of the
painting process.

NEW WORK:
Working with various recording and presentation technologies
such as film and projection, I create minimal sculptures and
installations which emphasise the physical, sensory and temporal
experience. The viewer is a central element, and by mirroring
their physicality through images, sounds and shadows, I aim to
bring into question their role as spectator, subject or performer.
The nature of my work often depends upon the space in which
it is viewed and I want to develop my practice by responding to
new environments. I plan to explore new technologies and find
different ways to capture and present ephemeral elements such as
light, sound, space and time.

I paint people inside invented interiors, which play with the
boundaries of literal and psychological space. These fictional
spaces are often shielded domestic settings – the figures within
them stripped of recognisable connections to each other and the
world around them.
I provoke enquiry into the subject’s state of mind, undermining
the division between inner and outer worlds.

NEW WORK:
Recently I have designed interactive audio-visual installations
in public spaces. These interventions aim to highlight the
mechanised behaviours common in our current society.
My most recent project was designed for public toilets. I wanted
to reveal and subvert the unconscious repetitive gestures related
to cleanliness and I created symbolic objects – like Praying Hands
Soap – that question the way people perform these daily actions.
I am currently working on my own brand, creating functional art
pieces and interactive installations for the public domain.

NEW WORK:
I work in photography, video and installation, exploring the
conditions surrounding the imposition of an image onto a
certain setting. I’m interested in the relationship between
photography and the ready-made, and the idea of nature and
colour as flexible barriers to our surroundings.
Throughout the coming year I aim to further investigate the
constructed spaces in my photographs. I intend to extend
the process of making and to let the work evolve within and
around the finished piece, playing with the blunt cuts made
when creating a photograph.

NEW WORK:
My recent work combines abstract geometric form with found
images, playing with spatial logic through the layering of
the graphic and photographic. I’m interested in the interplay
between order and disorder, where the systematic meets the
accidental or irrational, both in terms of the creative process
and in the use of materials and visual languages.
During 2012 I will be working on an architectural commission,
further developing the current themes within my work and
experimenting with medium and scale. I’m currently making

NEW WORK:
The 21st Century is vast, chaotic and confusing, so I make work
that directly engages with it. I take the stuff of consumer life –
shopping, advertising, global manufacturing – and unravel its
tidy logic. I try to stop things making sense.
Over the next few months, I’m developing a series of absurd
interventions in mass-production. I’ll be installing one of these
at the Chinese Arts Centre in Manchester, and launching a
wrong-headed luxury brand at Paradise Row.

NEW WORK:
My work explores the complex physicalities of the human body
and recently I have used human hair to create 3D drawings in
the air. The structures created through this material symbolise
the body’s interior world. I enjoy this discourse between matter
and metaphor.
In 2012 I will continue painting and explore the interplay
between sculpture and drawing by developing structures with a
variety of different materials.

NEW WORK:
Currently, I am looking at the cultural politics of
internationalisation – it seems quite unavoidable to do so, not
only because of what I have experienced but because of what
the world around me appears to be. Through my paintings,
drawings, performances and sculptures I am developing my
visual interpretation of the world I experience. The poetics of
community, collaboration and the act of making artwork (in
solitude and in response to sites) are key to my practice.

NEW WORK:
My practice consists of humanised objects and objectified
human images with vivid colours on subtle layers of translucent
drafting film and polyester. My interest in modern technology
and its effect on the human mind explains the passive nature
of the creatures in my paintings. My fear is that humans – in a
controlling society – are losing character and individuality.
Inspired by Judy Chicago’s The Dinner Party, I have started
making ‘dish paintings’. The toppings are half-human, halfobject and because they are served on a plate there is a strong
relation to our mouths and bodies. The creatures appear
passive and vulnerable – waiting to be consumed – but they are
metaphors for our daily consumption of media and technology.

NEW WORK:
In my work I explore the notion of selfhood in relation to its
surroundings and language. While linking photography and
performance, my images attempt to highlight the fleeting
ambivalence between essentialist truth and the interplay with
fictional selves imbued with humour and self-denial. My
research is informed by psychoanalysis as critical theory for the
understanding of contemporary visual culture.
In 2012 I will co-curate a photography exhibition in Lithuania

NEW WORK:
My practice is concerned with identity and anonymity. Current
work explores the domestic archive as portrait and place for
identification and the formation of identity. The surfaces of
these photographic prints are incised and removed, leaving an
ambiguous white space analogous to the gap between the original
and its representation. This act plays on the relationship between
photograph as object or copy, and as image or representation.
Plans for 2012 include further investigation of how drawing
informs my practice, and experimentation with further sources
of domestic photography and archive. I will be setting up my
new studio and working on a collaborative project with artist
filmmaker Katie Goodwin, provisionally titled Film Fan.

NEW WORK:
I built these object-sculptures – like the big freaks seen in the
Deodorants Games series – with the sole intention that they
became photographs. They are enactments of a product – car air
fresheners – inspired by notions of our own self-branding in a
world of abundance and choices.
Looking ahead, as part of my ongoing project The Puppy Box,
I would like to develop a body of work to question notions and
frictions between the local-familiar and the global-unfamiliar.

NEW WORK:
I explore an interweaving of opposing pairs: reality with fiction;
the concrete with the intuitive; aversion with seduction. My
paintings have an anecdotal quality but not a singular narrative.
This allows me to explore both grandiose themes and everyday

thematically related to ideas of both food and home as points of
refuge. I intend to continue working in paint, and extend my
practice into objects and installations.

NEW WORK:
My recent work aims to subvert the familiar through the
experience of ‘the uncanny’ and to make the familiar
strange. My sculptures attempt to provoke tension between
the threatening and the safe, while remaining on the
threshold between the familiar and the unfamiliar. Fur is an
unconventional material because of its suspended condition
between life and death and in this way it simultaneously repulses
and seduces. Pressed behind glass, it suggests a potential tactile
experience one can only undergo by ‘touching with the eyes’.
I will make the leap from static to kinetic work and experiment
by placing motors inside the abdomen of my sculptures. They
will appear to breathe and – more than ever – each creation will
remain locked in limbo between creature and sculpture.

I’ve heard that there are humans who suffer
from anatidaephobia; an irrational fear that
one is being watched by a duck. And when
you rub a sliced onion on your foot you will
be able to taste it in your mouth an hour later.
This is precisely why I mould teeth with
penises, paint cucumbers enjoying a hot stone

which art is as incomprehensible, meaningful
and horrible as the life around us.

NEW WORK:
I am interested in areas of aporia; a moment of indeterminacy or
suspended tension. Ideas of choice and autonomy may be most
forcefully felt in hospitals where experiences vibrate beyond
themselves and are absorbed into all thought, infecting all ideas
and leaving instability.
I intend to maintain a self-critical practice which considers
the unreadable nature of our present; expansive choice and
abundance of imagery can breed opacity. Therefore, I aim to
consider how it can still be possible to communicate and make
painting at this precise juncture.

NEW WORK:
My work begins with a preoccupation with a
certain environment. This can vary from the
virtual environment of a computer game, an
awkward hairdressing salon or the bizarre setup
of a bathroom showroom. My work addresses
the space from any angle – and in a variety of
media – in an attempt to establish what it is that
makes that environment significant.
Making work after graduation can be difficult
without the validation that art school and tutors
provide but I aim to develop my practice by
seeking new and appropriate platforms. I have
designed a new piece for the Jotta website,
launching in March, and I am also developing
an online artist network for Oxfordshire.

NEW WORK:
I examine the ways in which our minds and bodies
respond to widely shared feelings of entrapment
associated with the saturated image culture of today.
How will we evolve with these vast changes in our
future ‘reality’? I have discovered that the complex
matrix of brain, body and technology can constitute the
problem solving machine identifiable as ourselves.
With Proprioception I embraced the idea of the ‘cyborg’,
not in the superficial sense of combining flesh and
wires but in the profound sense of the symbiotic nature
of humans and technology.

viewer with an apparently stable narrative, which subsequently
reveals a series of uncertain and perhaps disturbing situations.

NEW WORK:
Through my practice I explore the conventions of artistic
labour, productivity and authorship, often instigating daunting
feats of endurance such as Sic, a hand-made transcription of
the Bible. Contradicting display systems examine the subject
position, underline the propositional nature of art and reveal
the ambiguous boundaries between fact and fiction. My practice
considers contemporary notions of authenticity and authorship
within the wider context of religious and mythological
belief systems.
Following Covenant, I will recommence work on several major
projects including the organisation of a group show exploring
laboriously futile working processes. I will also continue to
develop a theoretical research programme that I hope may result
in essay publications and serve as preparation for further study.

NEW WORK:
I am interested in the space between craftsmanship and
industrial production. My work examines how a massproduced object can inherit a certain aura through the
hand of the artist. I also aim to explore the possibilities
of labour in relation to how machines function in
a production line. Recent work has appropriated
everyday objects and accentuated the qualities I feel
have been overlooked in their conventional use
and form. I want to liberate these materials from
a defined conventionality and new work will
embrace collage and video as well as sculpture.

NEW WORK:
The abstract, personal and subjective associations provoked by
the way I work through ideas and display images is now starting
to give way to a more historical and political approach.
My current work deals with the people of Portugal and the
past six decades of their history. By establishing connections
between public imagery and photographs from my private family
album I intend to analyse how society has failed to build a sense
of consciousness and authenticity. Consequently, my aim is to
incorporate a new social element into my practice by reflecting
and reacting to the situation in my home country.

NEW WORK:
I see my work as an abstracted or aesthetic skin to complex
political issues and I am interested in how the media and the
internet present narratives that are often taken out of context.
The titles of my work need to be Googled before the meaning
is decoded. I am drawn to events and traumas that linger in
the collective consciousness or cause amnesia.
I want to make the viewer examine or reconsider what they
are seeing and what they think they know. New work will

NEW WORK:
I approach serious concerns over the materiality of daily life with
a playful surreality. My practice is conceptual, incorporating
a wide range of media, including collage, film, sculpture
and installation. I am interested in collage as an exigent
contemporary art form in a world abundant with disposable
images and I frequently work with found paper ephemera.
I am currently an active member of two research and discussion
groups; CCW Creative Transition is a project encompassing
staff and postgraduate students from three London colleges
(Camberwell, Chelsea and Wimbledon) while the MFI Group
conducts informal monthly meetings at Flat Time House in
Peckham. My involvement with these groups will have a direct
influence on my practice throughout 2012.

NEW WORK:
I am interested in the blurred distinctions between natural and
artificial and with highlighting – through camera technologies
– notions of time, change and perception. My work relates to
the interactions between humans and nature, and engages with
thoughts on landscape and the photographic medium.
I construct and isolate with the lens, building up a work in
montage or multiple frames. I intend my work to be a study of
life, succession and entropy within a technological landscape.
In the forthcoming year I will continue to focus on the natural
world, working with film, animation and still imagery.

NEW WORK:
I believe that fine art is about the process of building skills
towards a greater understanding of communicating one’s ideas.
The recent focus in my artwork is to explore, to abstract, to
appropriate and to manipulate contemporary images. I create
combinations of overlaps and associations. The motifs in my
collages, drawings and objects are swallowed up by these
compositions, even becoming the composition.
My work is something that happens gradually, an intuitive
process and set of choices. Although I enjoy making contrasts,
I don’t wish my art to appear contradictory. I hope that different
elements complement each other and these juxtapositions are not
binary or dualistic, but multi-dimensional and interconnected.

NEW WORK:
I make social sculpture that combines architectural interventions,
community participation and colour to reveal underlying
cultural values. This passion for architecture and colour has
also influenced an adjacent body of work consisting of abstract
drawings, prints and – more recently – collages.
I believe the power of public art can change a neighbourhood,
enhancing community safety and pride. I wish to spend my life
as an artist with the ability to contribute to society and enrich
and challenge communities, while continuing to learn about
people and places. I will be pursuing this on my next major
project – HOME – to coincide with the 2012 Olympics.

NEW WORK:
I am inspired by the works of Odilon Redon and how his
images are neither real nor fictional, but arise from an emotional
resonance and wonder in the viewer. I want my work to be
an exploration of the emotional experiences contained in our
everyday lives and I aim to deliver this message clearly, in an
almost emotionally detached manner. With Noon I used elements
of daily experiences and I tried to recreate situations where logic
falls apart, but simultaneously reconstructs itself into
a new possibility.
