President's Message by Mike Hinton, Redwood Region President
Well, here we are in November already. Daylight Savings Time is gone, and it seems
like it gets dark at 3:00 in the afternoon. As we approach the Holiday Season (yes, I've
already received several Christmas catalogs), our events for the year are winding down. Aside from the Dillon Beach run on the 14th , there is only the Holiday Party on December 12th remaining.
As you probably know, the Holiday Party will be held at the Flamingo Hotel in Santa Rosa this year, which
will be a familiar spot for long-time members. This event will be the first one that Brenda and I will attend
and I'm really looking forward to it. I'm told that the food will be first-rate. The Region is generously
covering the corkage fee for wine (so bring a nice bottle to share), and once again, CASA will be conducting
a silent auction. I purchased some nice wines at the auction last year. One important point to remember,
though - CASA does not accept credit cards for payment, so bring cash or your checkbook and bid
vigorously.

Since my last report, the Redwood Region held its first winery tour at Davis Estates, which is just up the
road from my house in Calistoga. Vern Rogers led a nice drive to the venue, and we were treated to some
great wines and a catered luncheon. Later, the owner, Mike Davis, conducted a tour of the grounds. Although construction is still underway (do large projects like this EVER get completed?), the parts that
were completed were beautiful, and the grounds have a fantastic view of the Napa Valley and the mountains
beyond. We hope to make this tour an annual event, so watch for it on the 2016 calendar!
Craig Steele and I attended the Zone 7 President's Meeting on Halloween down in Pleasanton. No, we did
not go in costume! Paul Czopek headed up his last meeting before his escape to Tucson, and I felt it was
time well spent. We spent much of the meeting discussing how to promote events of our own (and other)
regions, and will be working on an exciting proposal to conduct a "tour" of the entire Zone 7. Concurrently
with our meeting, Larry Sharp headed up an autocross course design class, which was attended by Grady
Carter, Chip Witt, and Drew Powers from the Redwood Region. Be sure to attend next year's autocross
events so that we can see what they learned!
Finally, on December 5, Brenda and I will be attending the annual Calistoga Tractor Parade. We plan to
eat dinner prior to the parade, and will host people at our house after the parade concludes. Please contact
me if you're interested in joining. It's a true small-town treasure!
Aloha from Maui!
Mike

Well I winterized my house and my Porsche. I'll try to unplug my car from the trickle
charger once every couple of weeks and get it out for a maintenance run to keep the
carbs from gumming up. Fuel stabilizer is no substitute for taking your car for a long
drive. The trick is having a day with no rain and with El Nino on our doorstep I fear I
may have a challenge ahead this winter getting the right opportunity to take my
maintenance runs. My car is setup to autocross and I have removed the heater boxes to
accommodate my Tangerine type 616 exhaust system. That means I have no heater or
defrost for inclement weather. I'm still surprised at how quickly this season went by. I
guess I was having a lot of fun!
I helped an old friend out the last two weekends with cleaning up a relatives home and ranch after a death
in the family. The relative was a real hoarder and I'm still in awe of how many nick nacks they had laying
around. The ranch was over near the coast in Comptche so I thought I'd get out and do some abalone
diving in the Mendocino Headlands. While I was out at the Headlands observing the impossible dive
conditions I saw a familiar blue 912 cruise by and I waved to what I knew must be Richard and Margo.
Then I remembered it was the weekend of the Mendocino tour. What a great place for Porsches to go
adventuring. There is not a straight road for hundreds of miles!
We may be winding down the year but we still have events to go to if you want to get out. Biscotti and
Cars. Cars and Coffee. Then the big to do...our Holiday Party on December 12th. I love this time of year. I'm a cold weather person. Bring on the wind, rain and snow! I have four months
of down time with autorcross to figure out a way to make my car go faster. Muh ha ha ha. Stay warm and
safe and enjoy this holiday season!
Shift Toward Adventure,

Good Times, Good Works Run Together in Davis Estates Tour
by Mark and Joan Campagna
Far north on the Silverado Trail lies Davis Estates, an impressive, new, state-of-the-art winery nestled
among the sun-drenched hills of Calistoga, CA...just the type of countryside the Redwood Region Porsche
Club has grown to know and love. We were here at the invitation of owners and Porsche enthusiasts Mike
and Sandy Davis, who had joined us on our next to last seasonal run. A big THANKS goes out to them, and
to their staff, for hosting such an enjoyable event and fundraiser. It was the perfect way to cap this early
October Saturday morning run through Northern California wine country.
Skies were grey - but not our spirits - as club members gathered at Vintage Oaks in Novato to prepare. The
day ahead would be a double fundraiser. Proceeds from the first activity, our club's luncheon at Davis
http://archive.constantcontact.com/fs114/1101594196247/archive/1122769646209.html[12/9/2015 10:29:00 AM]
Estates, would be donated to CASA, a charity program long supported by our club that assists abused and
neglected children in Sonoma county. That endeavor raised over $575.00. The second activity would be a
raffle offered by Davis Estates in support of firemen injured in the Lake County fires.
So in good spirits and for good cause we took to the road. My husband, Mark, and I, like the other Porsche
drivers, were eager to put our precision machine to the test as we traversed Marin, Sonoma, and Napa
counties. Hi-ho Silverado!
From Vintage Oaks we made our way down 101S to CA-37E and CA-116E (Lakeville Highway), where we
encountered some short-lived, low-hanging fog. As we turned left onto CA-121N, a zippy red Porsche
Boxster pulled in front of us from a right-side merge lane and continued to follow our caravan. We
wondered: Was this a serendipitous encounter? Had a potential new member found us by chance?
Answer: No, just incredibly good timing by a member hoping to join our run in progress. Can you believe
his luck?
CA-121N led us to Old Sonoma Road, which we took to avoid the congestion of lower CA-29. We were
now about halfway through our 60-mile run.
Using a combination of surface roads we continued across the valley floor through Sonoma towards Napa,
arriving at the Silverado Trail. Following this historic road north for another 20 miles, we arrived at Davis
Estates.
Mike and Sandy Davis were there to greet us as we arrived and direct us to a large, airy, barn where we
were offered tastings from the winery's cellar. While we were enjoying the first of many fruits from their
fields, a fine sauvignon blanc, our hosts introduced us to the purpose and goal of this fundraiser for the Fire
Family Foundation. Specifically for Lake County fire fighters, and other fire fighters, injured in the Lake
County fires, with all proceeds going directly to the Foundation. Raffle prizes included a 1.5 liter of their
Davis Estates cabernet sauvignon, and a 3-day, 2-night, stay for 3 couples at the Estate's guest house.
http://archive.constantcontact.com/fs114/1101594196247/archive/1122769646209.html[12/9/2015 10:29:00 AM]
A tour of the property and cellars was next, as Mike and Sandy walked us through their work-in-progress.
Interestingly, the couple who brought the Davis's together with this property are club members John and
Wynne Bergman, who share their enthusiasm for this unique spot. As new as some parts of this winery may
be, there are buildings on the property that date back to the early 1900s; that have been lovingly,
painstakingly restored. The blend of old and new works seamlessly here because each point of view
informs and respects the other.
http://archive.constantcontact.com/fs114/1101594196247/archive/1122769646209.html[12/9/2015 10:29:00 AM]
A wooden barn, circa 1920, refurbished plank by plank, is currently serving as a tasting room. In the barn a
custom fireplace is housed in a replica of a 1900s boiler that is 6-7 feet in diameter. Hanging over the coffee
table in front of the fireplace is a Big Ass fan. No, really, that's what it says on it, though it's probably
referring to the length of the fan's blades, which are an impressive 6 feet long. A patio looks out onto a
newly constructed, 260-foot deep well with an Aerometer windmill hand-crafted to match the aged barn. A
turn of the century farm home has been transformed into a well-appointed guesthouse. In the hillside caves
behind the buildings lies the foundation for a hexagonal, glass-walled, temperature-controlled, "Founders
Club" room for members and special tastings.
http://archive.constantcontact.com/fs114/1101594196247/archive/1122769646209.html[12/9/2015 10:29:00 AM]
Everywhere you look you see the effect of attention and detail and personality; if Mike is, in his words, the
"mechanic," and Sandy the "artist," the synergy with which they work together is undeniable. Each attended
college on a scholarship, each is a go-getter, each experienced an upbringing that valued hard work and
tenacity. From starting Applied Computer Solutions together in their Huntington Beach garage in 1989,
through Mike's adventures in auto racing, theirs is an engaging story.
Cars, it turns out, are a life-long interest for Mike. He raced professionally in Trans Am and World
Challenge, and for a time built his own racecars and funded the accompanying support teams and facilities.
His older son is a currently a professional racecar driver. His younger son is entering the "other" family
business and is an operations manager at the winery. With a family as motivated as this one, there is no
question this winery will be ready for its grand opening in May 2016.
And speaking of ready, our group was, returning to the warehouse to a refreshing buffet, more wine, and
the raffle drawing. Our luncheon included tri-tip, chicken, mixed veggies, pesto pasta salad, garlic bread,
and cheesecake. The 1.5 liter of wine was won by Mike and Brenda Hinton, who live so close they're almost
neighbors. The guesthouse stay was won - in another "can you believe it?" moment - by yours truly, Mark
and Joan. We intend to share the gift with others in the spirit in which it was won. That raffle raised $860.00
for the Fire Family Foundation.
http://archive.constantcontact.com/fs114/1101594196247/archive/1122769646209.html[12/9/2015 10:29:00 AM]
Though you can't see the ravages of the recent northern California fires from this bucolic spot, their
presence is never far from awareness. Stewardship of the land is a topic on everyone's mind these days,
and as we take in the bounty around us we find ourselves humbled again by the awesome grace of Nature.
We left Davis Estates warmed by the sun, good company, good wine, and good works. We thought again of
something Mike had said about their endeavor that we had read but now understood so much better: " We
are guardians of this property. We want to be part of its history, recapture its excellence in the past. We think
it is a magical place."
So does the Redwood Region Porsche club!
Redwood Election of Board of Directors for 2016

Election Biographies
Mike Hinton for President
Well, here we are one year down the road already. It's hard to believe that I'm completing my first year
as President of the Redwood Region. It has been an interesting and fun journey so far, thanks
especially to my fellow members of the Executive Committee. I certainly couldn't do my job without
them. http://archive.constantcontact.com/fs114/1101594196247/archive/1122769646209.html[12/9/2015 10:29:00 AM]
Last year, I stated that one of my goals was to continue to increase our outreach to our members. So far, I think that our
Board and I have done a decent job. Our membership is increasing, and we've had many first-timers at events in 2015. We plan to improve in that area in 2016, with a number of new events catering to our newest members. As I said last
year, I need your help too. Surely many of you have ideas for events that would appeal to our diverse membership. If so,
please share them with me and the Board. More participation from our members equals more fun for all!
Craig Steele for Vice-President
I have been a Porsche driver and a member to PCA since December 2009. I have a son, Sean who is
all things Porsche and BMW in San Diego (El Cajon). He owns Autobahn Auto Dismantlers and sold me
my 1999 Porsche 911 Carrera Cab in December 2009 and my 2006 Cayman S in May 2014. My wife,
Sandy and I love our Porsche. We have participated in every aspect of the Redwood region activities
from autocrosses, to tech sessions, to brunch runs, to car shows, to winery tours, to holiday parties, to
special club events. I have driven my Cab at Laguna Seca doing a driver education course.
I'm running again for Vice President. I have a long history of serving in volunteer leadership positions from my College
Fraternity, Sigma Phi Epsilon to IFMA (International Facility Management Association) to Leadership Santa Rosa, Cultural
Arts Council to United Centers for Spiritual Living. I believe I can add value and enjoyment to our 2016 events calendar
for our Porsche owners and associates.
I am a fourth generation Californian, born in San Rafael. I also have a daughter; Shannon and her husband live in Parker,
COLO with my two granddaughters (nine and five years old). Also, my son has a three-year-old granddaughter, Sophia plus second child, Stella born on the July 4th 2014. My hobbies included: photography, traveling, genealogy, power
walking (just started), etc. I currently work for Cush-Wake on the PG&E contract as a space planner.
Jerry Gladstone for Treasurer
For most of my adult life I have been a Porsche enthusiast and owner as well as a member of PCA. I
joined Redwood Region in 1996 and served as Secretary for 6 years, Treasurer for 5 years,
MotorSportReg Administrator for 4 years and co-Editor (with Barbara McCrory) of our newsletter - der
Riesenbaum - for 2 years. My current Porsche, my fifth, is an arctic silver 993 Carrera coupe (though I
do have thoughts of adding a newer Porsche to the stable). I very much enjoy my Porsche, the Club
and especially the people, with my favorite events being driving tours, tech sessions, race attendance,
car corrals, concours and social events. I would enjoy continuing to serve the Club as Treasurer (and MSR Administrator)
for 2015. Thank you for your support.
Chip Witt for Secretary
After an incredible year in the role, I'm running for the position of Secretary for the PCA Redwood
Region once again.
For those that don't yet know me well, I am a geek. I guess the politically correct moniker is
"technologist", but truth will out eventually ("a geek by any other name..."). I don't hide it well, nor do I
think I need to around my friends...especially when that comes to the surface in car-specific topics.
Professionally, I am a software product manager. In explaining what that means to someone recently, I
described it as, "wrangling the monkeys, and teaching them to dance". Really, it's about collecting and managing data,
collaboratively facilitating access to and use of information, and disseminating knowledge. Many of the same types of things
demanded of a club Secretary.
· Vital Stats: · Have lived in Sonoma County (Rohnert Park) since September 1980
· Attended college in Marin County (Dominican University of California)
· Have an undergrad degree in Biology/Chemistry and an MBA in Strategic Leadership
· Have worked with Information Technology and/or software for 20 years
· Have worked as a college lecturer, personal trainer, disc jockey, bouncer and courier (not all at the same time)
· Work for Hewlett Packard Enterprise Security Research
http://archive.constantcontact.com/fs114/1101594196247/archive/1122769646209.html[12/9/2015 10:29:00 AM]
· Long drives, the sun of Springtime, and close GT races make me giggle I have been a PCA member since June
2011, but have been a Porsche lover all my life.
The history, the engineering philosophy, even the pop-culture characterizations have all contributed to a near irrational
preference for Porsche over any other marque. "Sasha", a white 2012 997 Carrera GTS that is my daily-driver and AX
pride and joy, is what brought me to the club...to share the Porsche experience with other like-minded folk. In the
Redwood Region, I have continuously found that "it's not just the cars, it's the people" is not just a motto, it's the truth. It is
my hope you will do me the honor of allowing me to serve in the role of Redwood Region Secretary for another year.

Authentic BBS LM Wheel for Porsche 18" x 9.5" et55
5x130 Bolt Pattern - $500 OBO ( price change)
I have one spare, authentic BBS LM wheel for sale. It is
18" x 9.5" et55 with standard 5x130 Porsche bolt
pattern. It fits perfectly as a rear wheel on 986 Boxsters,
but also can work on 993 and 996 narrow body
models. New these wheels run close to $1000 each
plus shipping and sales tax. They are also made to
order and take time for delivery. These wheels are
period appropriate to '90s and early '00s Porsches and
are considered by many as the most desirable
aftermarket wheels.
Spec: 1 Rear Wheel: 18" x 9.5" et 55
Condition: Like-New and never mounted. There are two
small knicks in the lip from being moved around in
storage, otherwise it is pristine and clean enough to eat
off of. Price: $500 OBO (+ shipping and PayPal fees if
not local)
