Virtually everyone knows that the cool, clear gel of
the aloe vera plant is nature’s perfect kitchen remedy
for minor burns. But new research shows that aloe can
also moisturize the skin, and may give wrinkles and
sagging skin their walking papers. Who knew that a
hip, anti-aging cosmetic ingredient would turn out to
be centuries old?
Aloe’s romantic past
Legend has it, Cleopatra did. The Queen of the Nile,
renowned for her beauty, is said to have bathed in
aloe vera juice and used skin lotions infused with the

plant’s gel to preserve her youthful appearance. Aloe’s
skin-healing properties were also extolled by Pliny the
Elder, the first-century Roman naturalist; Dioscorides,
the first-century Greek doctor; and even Alexander the
Great, who conquered an entire island simply to have
access to its vast supply of cultivated aloe plants.
Anti-aging potential unveiled
Researchers have known about aloe vera’s burnhealing ability since the 1930s. But recently, they have
discovered this wonder plant may also make skin
softer, smoother and firmer.
 Wrinkle reducer. Aloe is loaded with antioxidants, which neutralize the free radicals that make
skin look older than it is. In fact, at least one study
has shown that topical aloe vera visibly decreases
the appearance of fine wrinkling.
 Moisturizer. There are two kinds of moisturizers:
occlusives, which physically keep water from
leaving the skin, and humectants, which draw
water to it. Aloe is one of the few ingredients that
is both, putting it on the A list of moisturizers.

 Skin firmer. But perhaps the most exciting
finding is that aloe vera increases the deposition
of collagen – that all-important building block of
connective tissue – so it may counter the dreaded
sagging effect that occurs with age.
Where to find
You don’t have to cut open an aloe leaf and slather
it on your skin every day. These days, you can find
generous quantities of this member of the lily family
in facial, hand and body lotions. In Latin, vera means
true, an apt characterization of the plant that offers real
medicinal properties. So take a cue from Cleopatra,
and use aloe vera to preserve your own natural beauty.
