May 2013 Newsletter - Terrence Positive Nelson
From The Desk of Senator Terrence “Positive” Nelson Positive Is How I Live POSITIVE TIMES Senator’s Message Dear Virgin Islander, When Bible Prophets mentioned, “the days will be like hours, and months like days, years like months…” the prophets sure knew what they were talking about. My goodness, we are almost half way through 2013, already. This is even more evidence that time, the present tense, is an illusory and moving primordial wave of conscious existence. All we can do in it is manage and prioritize our doings so as to maximize our quality of life, sustenance, enjoyment, family & shelter. In order to move forward we must establish consensus on our priorities as a government. The territory’s budget is of great concern to everyone in the USVI. We [the senators] have been asked by the governor and the senate president to come up with ideas to remedy the supposed budge short fall of $19,000,000.00. It seems to me that many of “our” elected officials do not have any other creative ways of closing this gap than to put the heavy burden on the populace by taxing the small business, taking away portions of tax refunds, taxing personal items mailed into the territory etc. The people are being taxed, doubled taxed and triple taxed on their earnings. This needs to stop! I do not understand how “they” cannot see this and how “they” cannot understand that by continuing to put the burden on the laymen, our infrastructure and community will implode in more ways than one (1). As I see it, “outsiders” are more valued than our own. We give tax breaks and leniencies to people coming in and we browbeat those who truly care about and love the VI-the residents. I do not agree with this. And if you have followed my voting and legislative track record, I do not support those type of legislations. The revenue generating proposals I have and am proposing are sound and if implemented would have positive results. Senator Nelson Hosts 9th Annual Senior Citizen Brunch Here we are again and it is with great gratitude that I am humbled and honored to provide this celebration once again for the Senior Citizen’s of our beloved St. Croix community. Friday, May 17, 2013 we held the 9th annual Senior Citizen Brunch at The Vincent Mason Coral Resort (aka The Frederiksted Pool). Every year Stephanie Nelson organizes this event, prepares the food and caters the event with the help of my parents, Adolphus & Henrietta Nelson and Ms. Maude Hazzell. As there is no I in TEAM, we would not be able to host this event successfully each and every year without the support of individuals and businesses in the community. Thank you to all who contributed financially, donated items or who volunteered their time and energy to making this event a success. I would like to personally thank, Southland Gaming, Senator O’Reilly, Senator Capehart, Plaza Extra, Ferrol Trucking, Fleming Transport, Ms. Thelma Peters, Ahwe Food, Attorney Moolenar, Sonia Kelly-Williams, Pastor Granger, Reggae Bubblers, L&C Tent, Human Services, Queen Asheeba, Dept. of Sports, Parks & Recreation, Brother Roy, Bethel SDA Community Service Members, Myrna DeAltier Pickard, Kenneth (KC) Christopher, Raymond Hector, Catholic Charities & Zandy Evanson. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I know these have been challenging times and you could have used your time, money and resources for other endeavors. This year we served over 200 seniors & gave out treats in mini gift boxes along with ‘Positive Is How I Live’ tote bags. VI Community Health Top 5 Benefits of Aloe Vera Most of us are unaware that the healing powers of aloe extend much beyond cooling and repairing sun burnt skin. In ancient times, Aloe Vera and its extracts were used for medicinal purposes. Today, researchers are discovering more advantages of this versatile plant. Mentioned below are the top five health benefits of Aloe Vera, Aloe Vera j u i c e , a n d A l o e Vera gel: 1.Certain properties of the Aloe Vera plant make it an excellent remedy for speeding up the healing process to any injury. Aloe Vera is excellent for treating scars, burns, and cuts. 2. Aloe Vera is well known for its antiinflammatory properties. In other words, it has the ability to arrest inflammation or slow it down due to the presence of fatty acids. Applying Aloe Vera gel can prevent or stop inflammation caused by injury, immune dysfunction, and many other problems. 3. Improves digestion and helps detoxify the body. Aloe Vera juice and gel are both good laxatives and help in dealing with constipation. 4. As Aloe Vera is a cellular regenerator and has anti-bacterial and anti-fungal effects, these properties make aloe Vera one of nature's healthiest products. Being a strong antioxidant, it hunts down free radicals and protects the body. 5. The dried juice/gel of the Aloe Vera plant is traditionally used as a remedy for diabetes as the aloe Vera juice lowers blood sugar. Aloe Vera in almost all its forms possesses multiple medicinal qualities that can improve the immune system and help your body to recover more quickly, thereby increasing the quality of your life. I am proposing that : 1. Instead of EDC companies being exempt from property tax that they pay a portion of it. Taking Aloe Vera in excess quantities can lead to harmful effects, so it is good to consume Aloe Vera in small amounts until you know how your body reacts to it. 2. We use unexpended PFA money 3. Vol 5 Issue 6 MAY 2013 Governor repay the $500,000.00 he redirected and misleadingly used to enhance his personal residence. 4. We implement a departure tax from the USVI to the BVI. I am glad that she not only heard but listened. I truly believe that education is the great equalizer. In life, you’ll meet two kinds of people. The ones who build you up and the ones who tear you down. But in the end, you’ll thank them both. You will begin to heal when you let go of past hurts, forgive those who have wronged you and learn to forgive yourself for your mistakes. A father’s job is not to teach his daughter how to be a lady. It’s to teach her how a lady should be treated. Starting over requires no explanation to anyone, requires no specific date, requires nothing more than you saying It’s Time. When you gossip about others it shows that you are not happy with your own life. Stop talking about people and work on a real relationship with God. Only trust someone who can see these three things in you, the sorrow behind your smile, the love behind your anger, and the reason behind your silence. May 16, 2011, Associates Degree Thought for the Month There’s one sad truth in life I’ve found while journeying east and west. The only folks we really wound are those we love the best. We flatter those we scarcely know. We please the fleeting guest. And deal full many thoughtless blow to those who love us best.
