business by providing advocacy, leadership and resources.
A PUBLICATION OF THE SPEARFISH AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
Message from the President
It has been my honor and a pleasure to serve as your Chamber Board of Directors
President for the last year. The year has gone quickly with several programs and events
that add to the quality of life we enjoy in the Spearfish Area. There are many people to
thank for their time and energy devoted to Chamber events: the Ambassadors, the
Young Professionals, the Diplomats, Governmental Affairs, the Hosts of the Gone Fishin’
Mixers, the volunteers at educational and networking events, our partners with Economic Development, Visit Spearfish, the City of Spearfish AND the Chamber Board of
Directors. A special thanks to our out-going members of the Board of Directors: Pat
Doyle, Tim White, Jr. and Barb Drapeaux. A HUGE thank you to the Chamber office
staff: Melissa Barth, Hannah Remington and Danielle Alden and our office volunteers.
In 2014 we welcome Dee Sleep as the new Chamber Board of Directors President and in-coming members of the Board of Directors: Dr. Bob McIntosh, Michelle Kane and Dylan Wilde. Watch for the 2014
Program of Work and the calendar of events. We look forward to serving you as the leading voice of
business by providing advocacy, leadership and resources.
During this Holiday season I wish for each of you a grateful heart and the greatest of joy in the upcoming
New Year.

Spearfish Bucks Help Keep it Local
Melissa Barth, IOM
Chamber Executive
Director
One of the best ways to encourage local shopping this holiday season
is by giving “Spearfish Bucks.” These checks are good at any Spearfish
Business, members and non- members of the Chamber. Bucks are
available year-round and make excellent gifts for employees, family,
friends and more. At the Spearfish Area Chamber of Commerce, staff
members have been busily preparing Spearfish Bucks for many local businesses and
community members who use them for employee incentives and holiday gifts. If you plan
to give a large quantity of Spearfish Bucks and wish them to be ready on a specific date,
you are welcome to call in an order.
Spearfish Bucks are a service the Chamber provides to promote community growth.
Yes, there are expenses to the program, but they are minimal and the Chamber happily covers them to
keep this great program going. The Chamber asks that you please alert your frontline staff and new
employees about how this program works.
Buck Facts:
+ Spearfish Bucks are actual checks that come in increments of $5, $10 or $20.
+ Purchased at face value, no service fees.
+ Can be used at any Spearfish business that accepts checks.
+ Valid for 180 days from issue date.
+ User completes the "PAY TO THE ORDER OF" line to any Spearfish
business that accepts checks.
+ The business collects them as a regular check, endorses and deposits them.
For more information on Spearfish Bucks,
please call the
Spearfish Area Chamber of Commerce
at 605-642-2626.

December 2013
SEDC Executive
Director
I am pleased to announce that Spearfish Economic Development has
launched a new & improved website, www.spearfishdevelopment.com. The
goal of the new website is to promote Spearfish as the premier location to live,
work and do business.
The mission of SEDC is “improving lives by creating economic opportunities for our community and its citizens.” By having a central location of information for businesses desiring to open up, expand or relocate to Spearfish, I
am confident that SEDC will continue to make progress in achieving its mission.
Cultivating a positive online presence is vital to ensuring success in today’s
economic development landscape. While building the site, SEDC used local
business input as well as best practice standards to make certain that the
information being provided meets the needs of the business community. In
addition to a fresh look, the website boasts enabling features that make it easy
for visitors to access key information about Spearfish. These features include:
• Enhanced site and real estate information: Site selection consultants and
prospective businesses now have access to a detailed database of land
and buildings which are currently on the market in Spearfish. Visitors can
search and map commercial real estate, as well as print and view parcel
data on a GIS mapping system directly from the website.
• Update Community Profile: Website visitors can get detailed information
on local and regional demographics, workforce, major employers, education, taxes and economic indicators.
• Information for New Businesses and Entrepreneurs: The Business Resource section of the website gives visitors looking to start a business a
step-by-step guide, while also providing existing businesses access to
local market intelligence, funding resources and workforce development training grants.
Additional information on SEDC, its membership and
retail development opportunities are also available.
More than just a recruitment tool, the site was designed
to assist in business retention and expansion activities.
Although the current site is only a beta test version,
Spearfish employers, real estate brokers, national site selectors and strategic development partners will find valuable
information on the site.
In order to remain dynamic, while meeting the needs
businesses, SEDC is encouraging feedback from website
visitors. Our focus is to create a positive first impression of
Spearfish and to be a trusted resource which provides businesses with relevant information and resources they need.
