Building Atlas) to be constructed at the former site of the Premier Bankcard building. This agreement means that TMone, one of the city’s largest private-sector employers prior to Winter Storm Atlas, will remain in Spearfish in coming years. On Friday, Oct. 4, 2013, following days of warm temperatures, the weather turned cold, snowy and windy with surprising speed. By Sunday, the Northern Black Hills were buried under more than 3 feet of heavy, wet snow. Winter storm Atlas knocked down trees, cut power to thousands, stranded motorists and collapsed the roof of the city-owned TMone call center. Since losing the building, TMone has operated from a temporary facility located inside the city-owned Rec Center. TMone will continue to operate from this location until the new building can be completed. Recovering from Winter Storm Atlas has proved challenging in more ways than one; however, crises are nature’s way of forcing change, which in turn create new opportunities. One of the exciting aspects about the new facility is that the City and SEDC will be designing the space to meet the needs of multiple tenants. TMone is slated to occupy 10,000 square feet, while the remaining space, up to 40,000 square feet, will be marketed to new or expanding businesses which are interested in locating to Spearfish. As TMone ramps back up, they of course will have the ability to expand beyond their initial 10,000 square feet of lease space. Historically, SEDC has never been in a position to market building space to companies seeking a Black Hills location. Having available “spec” space will provide an excellent opportunity for Spearfish to attract companies which are seeking a strategic location while also providing space to local businesses seeking additional room for expansion. Growing up in a family of eternal optimists, I remember my mother saying, “Bryan, when life gives you lemons, you don't make lemonade. You use the seeds to plant an orchard.” Winter Storm Atlas was a bitter pill to swallow, however with a little time, perseverance and hard work, I am optimistic that Spearfish can leverage this opportunity to cultivate new economic development opportunities which will bear a lifetime fruit. Business Briefs...in cooperation with Black Hills Power, Spearfish Economic Development will be exhibiting at the 2014 FABTECH tradeshow in Atlanta, GA November 11– 13. FABTECH is the country’s largest gathering of companies which specialize in metal manufacturing and finishing. The show will provide SEDC an excellent opportunity to market the area to companies which may be interested in expanding and/or relocating to the Black Hills.
