Depending upon where you live in South Dakota, electricity demand has barely increased or grown greatly in the past decade. The spread of ethanol production plants added mightily to the load on rural electricity systems. The TransCanada oil pipeline network, needing huge amounts of juice for its pumping stations, is the latest big new user of rural CAPITOL power. The result is that peak winter and summer demand on 2asin's system in South Dakota has far outgrown the cooperative's forecasts, and has far exceeded growth for the five investor-owned utilities providing electricity in South Dakota. Nor is rural demand expected to slow down. 2asin officials now predict summer peak demand to more than double from :009 to :019. 2lack Hills Power, which serves Rapid City and the 2lack Hills, doesn't have any new generation facilities proposed. Nor does Montana Dakota Utilities. 4tter Tail Power, which runs the 2ig Stone coal-fired plant in Grant County on behalf of partners Northwestern Energy and MDU, planned for a second unit there that would generate 600 megawatts from coal. 4tter Tail ended its involvement in 2ig Stone II last September, and the project was MALLARD FILLMORE cancelled by the remaining investors in November. 4tter Tail, based in Fergus Falls, Minn., serves northeastern South Dakota. The company is reconfiguring its plans to meet growing demand. Its latest 10-year plans shows the company intends to add 50 megawatts of wind power in :01: and up to :50 megawatts of gas-fired peaking production by :01< at still-undetermined locations. Qcel and 4tter Tail also are looking at participating in construction of a high-capacity 3Z5-kV transmission line from the 2rookings area to the Minneapolis-St. Paul area as NOTEBOOK part of a broad multi-utility approach to transmission known as CapQ :0:0. Northwestern Energy, based in Huron, serves much of the James River Valley communities and its growth has been affected by population trends since the 2aby 2oom peak of the 19I0s. The company plans to add a 50-megawatt gas-fired plant in Aberdeen to serve industrial needs by December :01:, and is now buying :5 megawatts of power from 2P's wind farm at Ree Heights. What does it all meanb Congress is deadlocked on energy and climate-change legislation. Yet the election of President 4bama, and the resulting anti-coal approach taken by the EPA under his watch, had already sent a message of the new reality to the marketplace. Utilities, at least those serving South Dakota electricity customers, have adjusted accordingly. On the two good sightings that I have had of the bird, all of the field marks have been noted-orange bill, orange eye ring, grayish chest, and veery colored back. I have been trying to make it into something else but my last two looks have confirmed it for me. I'm not sure how often this species is kept in captivity but it seems to be a wild bird. It can fly very well and is (leary) of humans.” Fondy said there are very few confirmed sightings of this bird in the United States and this is the first ever for South Dakota. This bird will , and already has, brought in dedicated birders from all over the United States who like to add new birds to their “life list.” Ripma spotted the rare bird near Iron Creek in the Canyon.
