SCOIL EOIN BALLOONAGH pupils step back in time
Sunday, the 24th of April marked
the symbolic anniversary of the
Centenary of the Easter Rising.
To mark the occasion, students
at Scoil Eoin in Balloonagh set
up a classroom in the old prefab
buildings to imitate the conditions
encountered by children attending
local schools in Tralee 100 years
ago last week.
The classrooms were kitted
out with old school benches,
blackboards and chalk, religious
icons, inkwells and nib pens
amongst other memorabilia from
that era.
Students and teachers also joined
in the fun by dressing up in
clothing similar to those worn in
schools at the beginning of 20th
century.
Last Tuesday and Wednesday,
children in the third and fourth
classes at the school had the
opportunity to experience what
life and conditions were like for
Scoil Eoin Balloonagh pupils Orla Stack-Leen, Luke Healy, Marc Carmody, Callum Priestly
and Orla Barry with their teachers Joe Mcmahon and Caroline Kennedy who reenacted

Council Memorial audit
Memorials,
plaques
and signs are an oftenoverlooked part of our
cultural heritage. They
identify and honour
people, historic events
and heritage landmarks
of the county. Whilst
we know that there are
many such memorials,
plaques
and
signs
located
throughout
County Kerry, they have never
been comprehensively recorded
to date. So, as part of the Kerry
2016 Centenary Programme, the
Heritage Office of Kerry County
Council is now undertaking an
audit of these memorials, plaques
and signs and they would like your
help.
T.J. Mahony is the Heritage Officer
with Kerry County Council. “The
information gathered in this audit
will be made public and may be
of interest to local community
groups, historians, educational
institutions, tourists and our
Diaspora. A travelling exhibition
through the County Library
Network will be launched during
Heritage Week 2016 and the audit
will also be utilised to inform
future civic memorial, plaque and
sign policies within the county”
The types of memorials that they
are interested in are those, which
commemorate influential people
(politics, sport, religion, literature,

structures, Special or sacred places
and/or structures, Significant

People are asked to note that
graveyard memorials are not
included in this survey.

as Ashe Street, Connolly Park,
Casement Station and Abbey
Street which housed one of the
harshest tenements in Ireland
at the beginning of the 20th
century.
Thanks to the generosity of
Garvey’s Supervalu in Rock Street
the children enjoyed a pitstop
where they were treated to milk
and bread which was customary
at the time.
Sean Farrell of Scoil Eoin explained
to the Tralee Outlook that it
was customary at the time for
local bakeries to feed the needy
children from the area. Kevin and
Fiona Cotter of the Brouge Inn
also extended hospitality to the
children along their historical trail.
Scoil Eoin expresses special
thanks to the Parents Council
for sponsoring the ink and
nib pens for the children and
Garvey’s Supervalu for providing
refreshments and to the parents
who went to great lengths
dressing their children in historical
clothing and to the children of
third and fourth classes, their
teachers and SNA’s for making this
a day to remember in the school
community for a long time.
New Initiative to tackle
cyber bullying
A new initiative in conjunction
with Ballyheigue GAA and
Ballyheigue Youth Club to
highlight the dangers online
faced by children and adults alike
has been launched.
Speaking to the Tralee Outlook,
Marion
Godley
the
new
community development worker
at Kerryhead/Ballyheigue Family
Resource revealed, “The initiative
in conjunction with Ballyheigue
GAA and Ballyheigue Youth Club
is to highlight the dangers online
faced by children and adults
alike. The presentation is aimed
at all parents, especially those
not skilled in the use of modern
technology. Social media, certain
apps and children’s safety online
will be covered.”
Garda Jason O’Mahony who
is an expert in this field will

The people of Tralee will have an opportunity
to join in solidarity with those who are
suffering from Mental Health issues and join
with thousands throughout Ireland and the
World as the town hosts a ‘Darkness into Light’
walk this Saturday morning commencing at
4.15am at Tralee CBS The Green.
This is Tralee’s first year taking part in the
Darkness into Light event which was started
by Pieta House founder Joan Freeman and
is now the most vital component in Pieta
House’s income.
Funds raised during the Darkness into
Light walks are essential for Pieta House to
continue providing a free service for the
increasing numbers seeking help. The Tralee
event is being organised by Colin Aherne
who helped organise the very successful
Walk 4 Life event in town last April.
We wish Colin Aherne and his organising
committee a very successful venture.

KERRY CHORAL UNION SALUTES 1916 PATRIOTS WITH CONCERT
It was a case of standing room only
at the Church of Our Lady and St
Brendan’s in Rock Street as it was
packed to capacity for a very special
1916 Commemoration Concert
which was hosted by the Kerry
Choral Union and sponsored by the
Arts Office at Kerry County Council.
The evening, which featured the
combined talents of the 80-member
Kerry Choral Union Senior and
Junior Choir under the baton of their
Musical Director Sharon Reidy and
musical accompanist Aine Murray
was a magical mixture of music,
poetry, readings and dancing and
pipers and drummers from Tralee
Pipe Band, Irish Dancer Darragh
Hurley and traditional musicians
David Healy, Nicole Doyle, Kieran
tralee choral union members at their gala concert
Flavin and Timmy Flaherty.
Kerry Choral Union Chairperson Una
O’Connor told the Tralee Outlook
that the Kerry Choral Union wanted
to mark the Centenary of the 1916
Easter Rising in a special way.
“We were delighted to hold the
Concert on the 24th of April, 100
years to the day of the rising.
Members of both choirs were
practicing for this special night all
year and it culminated in a fantastic
way to honour the men and women
who fought in the rising through
music, dance recitals, readings
and poetry. Many members of the
Choral Union played their part in
both the singing and readings,”
added Una O’Connor.
On another note, Tralee man Kevin
O’Connor, who has been Stage
Director for the Kerry Choral Union
for the last 35 years is retiring from
the role but hopes to continue with
the choir for many years to come.

Weeks of hard work and
preparation are almost at an end for
the talented group of Presentation
Primary School girls who will be
Kerry’s sole representatives at a
National Song Competition, which
will take place at the national
concert hall in Dublin on May
15th. The competition “Song For
‘16 All-Island Competition” is run in
conjunction with the Department
of Education and Science and the
National Concert Hall.
“They had to compose the lyrics
and music, perform the song and
record it, with very limited adult
intervention permitted. They
have reached the live All-Ireland
Final, which will take place in the
National Concert Hall on May
15th. We are one of only seven
primary schools in the country
to be selected for the final and
the only school from Kerry. We
are absolutely thrilled and would
be delighted with some media
exposure, as it is a great honour
for our school and an “once-in-alifetime” opportunity,” A delighted
Helena Hennessy told the Tralee

collecting funds for the night out
with a successful table quiz.

political outlook
With the state exams due to begin
on the 8th June, which is just five
weeks away, candidates may become anxious about their performance. A level of anxiety is normal
and focusses the mind on the
challenge ahead. Almost all exam
candidates, irrespective of how laid
back they appear, feel nervous. It’s
the body’s way of dealing with a
stressful experience. How you deal
with this nervous energy is the
critical issue. If you channel it in a
positive direction it will give you the
vitality to cope with the demands of
the exam.
A positive mental attitude is a
considerable aid around exam time. Have
confidence in your ability to do well. Don’t be
discouraged by other students appearing to
know more than you do. Aim to do perform
to your own capability not to compete with
others. Make positive statements about
yourself. Banish all negative thoughts from
your mind. Think well of yourself and of your
readiness to achieve success. Your best effort
is more important than your ultimate performance in the exam. Determine to do your
best, no more, no less.
Success is a product of positive thinking. By
motivating yourself towards your goals, you
will redouble your effort and improve your
performance. Have items in your study environment to spur you on. Place a statement of
your objectives, such as your target grades,
in a conspicuous place. An occasional glance
in their direction will encourage you.
Exam stress becomes newsworthy every
year because of the assessment system used
in the state exams. For the most part these
exams are terminally assessed. In effect, two
years of work is examined by means of written papers in June. Little credit is given to the
candidate for consistent work over the two
years. Continuous assessment is not utilised
nor, with certain exceptions, is project work
part of the exam structure. The major problem with the exam system is the increased
level of stress it causes in some students
around exam time. Despite all that is written
about exam stress, students continue to
show that they are excellent exam performers and use stress as a stimulant rather than
an affliction.
The stress experienced by the majority of
exam candidates is positive stress. It concentrates the mind wonderfully. You realise that
14
05.05.16
In the next article, I’ll take a detailed
look at physical preparation for the
exams.
the forthcoming exam is making increased
demands of you. However, your application
to study and revision provides you with the
resources to meet these demands. Positive
stress provides you with the motivation
to prepare for the exam. It will sustain and
stimulate this motivation until the exam is
over. Properly controlled stress will activate
hidden resources of energy and application
in you. It’s important to control the stress and
channel it into positive energy.
It’s only when you haven’t the resources to
meet the demands of the exam that distress
or negative stress becomes an issue. Exam
distress is a rare occurrence in young people
and can easily be confused with normal
exam anxiety. The present cohort of young
people is highly skilled and well able to cope
with the demands of the exam. Distress,
when it does occur, is disruptive and may
interfere with your performance if it isn’t
counteracted.
An effective way of managing distress is
through utilising your social support network
of people who care about you. If you need
emotional support approach someone in
whom you have confidence. That person
may be a teacher, a
parent or your guidance counsellor. All
you need is the advice
of someone who will
put the exam in perspective for you and
who will help to boost
your self-confidence.
It all goes back to having a positive mental
attitude and to realising that anxiety and
stress should be channelled in your favour.
Checklist
• Exam nerves are the most natural

Lotto Update: Thanks to all who support
the weekly Ardfert G.A.A. lotto. The jackpot of
€11,700 was won recently and we congratulate
the winner and also thank all our weekly lotto
players.
As usual, during the past year the income
from the lotto was able to support both St.
Brendan’s Hurling Club and Ardfert Football
Club as well as paying for the maintenance of
the pitches at the Sportsfield and the Medical
Centre. Maintenance costs supported by the
lotto include grass cutting, electricity, refuse
and water bills.
During 2015, €14,000 was paid out to the
Hurling Club and €9,000 was paid out to the
Football club (including a once off additional
allocation of €2,000 to support the club with
their expenses in their successful All-Ireland
Intermediate Championship campaign).
The lotto income also allowed the G.A.A. to
purchase a tractor to better enable grass
cutting at both locations while also paying for
tax and insurance. Other outgoings during the
year include the lotto licence, printing of lotto
tickets and 3 weekly prizes that total €140 –
[€75 / €40 and €25]. Overall during the year
€20,711 was paid out in prize money, inclusive
of the most recent jackpot win.
The lotto is a vital support to the G.A.A. in the
parish and the ongoing contributions of all lotto
players and ticket sellers is much appreciated.
While the basic ticket costs just €2 there are
also a no. of other options – a 5 week ticket
for €10 or an annual ticket for €100 - - further

U12’s: Our u12’s played against Laune Rangers
and Annascaul/Lispole last Thursday and Sunday
respectively and put up a very brave battle
against these strong teams. The boys and girls
acquitted themselves very well until the final
whistle. Training continues this Friday at half 6 in
the evening.
U14’s: Our u14’s played at home to Finuge last
Wednesday night and put on a great display of
football. This was a game of two halves. The first
half was a very exciting affair and it was point for
point up until the half time whistle. Our boys from
number 1 to 20 all played their hearts out and
we were up a point at half time. Unfortunately
the game quickly changed and Finuge got a few
quick goals. However our boys never dropped
their heads and should be very proud of their
performance.
Girls: Training is on Friday at 2.30pm in the field.
Please note the new date and time.
Seniors: We played a challenge game against
Naomh Abán from Cork, last Sunday and it is
hoped that the experiece will stand to them
when they play Glenbeigh/G’ car in the Junior
Premier Club Championship Round 1. Throw in

welcomed.

LONDON: On
Wednesday, 27th of April, the Darkness into
Light committee members were joined by
representatives of the Clayton Crown Hotel
to present a cheque to ICAP, the Immigrant
Counselling and Psychotherapy charity.
Thanks to the generosity of the London Irish
community, £4,000 was donated to the mental
health charity.
The walk took place last year on the 9th May 2015
with an estimated 700 participants taking part
in the charity event. The next Darkness into Light
walk will take place in London on Friday night
6th of May into Saturday morning 7th of May.
It is a unique, early morning experience which
begins in darkness at 4.15am as thousands of
people walk or run a 5km route while dawn is
breaking. The early dawn represents hope and
is symbolic of the work of Pieta House; bringing
people from darkness back into the light. This
year will see members of popular Irish bands;
Ronan McManus, Enda Mulloy, JP O’Donnell,
Liam Gill and Peter Coughlan lead the walk
with members of the committee. Darkness
into Light is the most vital component of Pieta
House’s fundraising calendar. As demand for
the service continues to grow and with more
than 80% of Pieta House’s income depending
on public donations, funds raised during
Darkness into Light are essential for Pieta
House to continue to provide a free service for
the increasing numbers seeking help.

Blennerville was the venue for our County final
game against Churchill last Friday evening.
Strong performances from Micheal Reidy,
Tadhg Brick, Tomas O Connor, and Darragh
Reagan, narrowily failed to win us this trophy.
Despite a poor start we were a point up at half
time ,but it was our inability to make the most
of our chances that was probably the cause of
our undoing in a tight game. An injury time
point sealed the win for our opponents and saw
our first defeat in the county league campaign.
A big thank you to team mentors, Tony Silles,
Martin Lowe, Willie Costelloe and Aidan O
Connor for the time they have dedicated over
the last couple of months to this minor squad.
A massive thank you also to all those who came
out to support us on the evening.

started this game at a blistering pace and full
forward Barry Lyons had a hat trick of goals
scored for the home side within the first 8

Castlegregory 2-8. This was very much a team
performance from the home side with all
players playing good football.

FAOI 14: County League Div 2A
Firies. 1-7 , Ballymac 2-11
We played our final group game to away to
Firies on Wednesday last. The halftime score
was 2-5 to 1-2. Our midfield of Cian and Dylan
were working their socks off and the inside line
of Johnny, Darragh L. and Aidan were making
great runs to make space for our attacks. Our
defenders were their usual solid selves, and
are really a tight 7 man unit. Each played their
role perfectly and denied Firies many scoring
opportunities.
We continued the second half in the same form
as the first. It was our quick break and support
play that is bearing the results for the boys.
Despite the setback of seeing Cian going off
with a knee injury the boys set about their task.

Castleisland Mart Senior Club
Championship - Relegation Playoffs
Rd 1: In the Senior Club Championship
Relegation play off, Milltown Castlemaine took
on Kerins O’ Rahillys in Farranfore on Sunday
May 1st2017. A minutes silence was held in
memory of our former club chairman, Frank
Twiss, who had died on April 21st 2016.
A penalty awarded to MC in the 5th minute
was brilliantly saved by Gary Kissane from KOR.
MC created a nice move- with Donal Kelleher
laying off a pass to Gavin Horan, who pointed
it over the bar. MC were lucky to get away with
a short kick out- which was driven wide by
Tommy Walsh. It was a further 5 minutes before
the next score was registered. This came from
a pointed free by Jonathan O’ Sullivan-leaving
the score –KOR: 1 goal, MC – 4 points. Jack
McCarthy came on briefly as a blood sub for
Jonathan O Sullivan in the 14thminute.
MC set up a nice passage of play when a free to
KOR was intercepted by Gavin Horan. However,
a further turnover saw KOR being awarded a
penalty, with 18 minutes gone, after Barry John
Keane was fouled in the square. This time it was
the post that kept David Moran’s shot out.

Congratulations to the churchill minor team who won the Division 4b county minor league
competition against Ballymac.
Lady luck was on
our side! The referee was kept busy issuing a
number of cards-noticeably a black to Cormac
Coffey for KOR. Gearoid Savage came off the
bench to replace Cormac. Jonathan O’ Sullivan
popped over the resultant free, to give a score
line of KOR: 1 goal, MC 6 points- after 18 minutes
of play. There were many turnovers of play,
with both teams trying their best to notch up
scoring opportunities. Eventually, KOR slotted
over a point from Jack Savage-their first score
since the opening minutes of the game.
Play was held up with an injury to MC’s John
Blenner hassett and in the 29th minute, he was
forced off the field of play. Jack McCarthy came
off the bench -with Pa Wrenn dropping back
to cover the number 4 position. Kevin Walshe
added a point for KOR in the dying minutes
of the first half and despite his new role in
the backs, Pa Wrenn sprinted up the field and
kicked a brilliant point- to give a score line of
MC:7 points,KOR:1:2 -at the half time whistle.
KOR began the second half in style- a pointed
free in the first minute by Jack Savage and a goal
seconds later by the Kerry senior player-Barry
John Keane leaving MC trailing by 2 points.
Despite some great passages of play by MC,
they failed to register scores and KOR went on
a scoring blitz with points from Tommy Walsh,
Jack Savage and Cian Sayers. MC eventually got
on the scoresheet in the sixth minute with a
pointed free by Jonathan O’ Sullivan. Milltown
Castlemaine tried hard –despite the pressure
from KOR and created some great moves of
play –resulting in a brilliant point off the left
boot of Donal Kelleher. The score line was now
-KOR: 2/07, MC: 9 points.
Disaster struck in the 12th minute when the
long striding Tommy Walsh struck for goal, the
3rd for KOR and a palmed goaled by Barry John
Keane a minute later left MC with a 7 point
deficit. MC introduced Cathal O’ Connor for
Mike Burke, in the 15th minute. Marcus Mangan
reduced the deficit with a point from a free.
KOR’s goal score Kevin Walshe received a black
card and Shane Flavin came in to replace him.
MC added a further point to leave the scoreline 12 points to 4/08 after 20 minutes.
Heading in to the last 8 minutes of the game,
MC introduced fresh legs off the bench. They
continued to graft hard and exhausted every
avenue to get past the KOR defence. Two further
points from Jack Savage and David McLaughlin
increased the gap to 7 points again. A glimmer of
hope came, when the referee, having consulted
with his umpires, duly awarded a penalty to MC,
for a foul on Gavin Horan. Jonathan O’ Sullivan
stepped up and placed the ball in the left hand
corner of the KOR goals. Score now was MC:
2/12, KOR: 4/10.
Despite MC giving it all they had, KOR popped
over 2 more points- to give a final score of
KOR:4/12,MC:2:2/12.

leinster hurling championship round robin
Kerry off and running in Leinster Championship
Donal Barry was at Austin Stack Park to see Kerry record their first win in the Leinster Championship
KERRY 2-19
carlow 0-17
In years to come it will surely be a pub
quiz question. Name the Munster team
that won their first game in the Leinster
hurling championship. While Kerry’s
win will go down on the record books, a
victory that took more time to record than
maybe Ciaran Carey would have liked.
“The performance probably dipped
slightly. It came across to me that they
were a bit tired and it was evident in
the first half in relation to hooking and
blocking. The turnovers wouldn’t have
been at the same standard as against
Laois. But I was pleased with the second
half.” Carey admitted to the Tralee Outlook
afterwards:
“I can’t put my finger on it, why the touch
wasn’t great, or why the decision-making or the
passes were poor, it just was. There has been
the same in the past but they are improving on
it and getting better. Today, they came below
the bar of the standard that they’d set.”
Like Carey Carlow too will never know how
they trailed at the break to Kerry. With the aid
of a strong wind, they notched up 13 wides in
the first half, most of them scoreable and while
the misfiring midlanders went in at the break
1-6 to 0-7 down, they were certainly very much
in the contest.
Jack Kavanagh opened the scoring for Carlow
but Kerry were soon 0-3 to 0-1 in front after
five minutes, thanks to points from John Egan,
Shane Nolan (free) and Daniel Collins.
Then despite a fine point from Mikey Boyle,
Carlow began dominating the middle third
as Kerry looked very flat, and Carlow levelled
thanks to two Martin Kavanagh frees and fine
effort from Seamus Murphy.
Then came the crucial score of the half when
John Griffin won a break, and send Colum
Harty racing through and he placed John Egan
who fired home a superb goal on 13 minutes.
Carlow dominated the second quarter but their
shooting was well below par, all they could add
before the interval, was two Martin Kavanagh
frees, and one from play by John Michael
Nolan.
Kerry emerged from the break more like the
side that defeated Laois in their relegation
play off, looking a lot sharper and as the half
wore on put down a marker for the season to
come and with both O’Leary brothers taking
complete control, they provided the platform
for everything good that was to follow.
Shane Nolan had one from play and from a free
on either side of his 39th minute goal, which
he kicked soccer style into the net. It was the

AUSTIN STACKS 1-9
DINGLE 0-11
Annascaul provided the backdrop to Austin
Stacks last gasp win over Dingle. It was a
victory just about deserved at the expense
of rivals Dingle. In doing so, the Tralee side
gained revenge for the defeat they suffered at
the hands of the West Kerry side at the same
stage of the competition last year.
A nasty suspected knee injury sustained
by Austin Stacks’ Greg Horan when he fell
awkwardly on the bumpy surface dominated
the early minutes of the game, but a very late
goal in the sixth minute of added time at the
end of the contest from Shane O’Callaghan
proved to be the decisive score.
The umpire’s decision to award the goal
was challenged by the Dingle defence and
the umpire’s green flag took flight into the
neighbouring field such was the consternation.
Referee Padraig O’Sullivan allowed the score to
stand despite protestations from Dingle who
weren’t quite ready to fall on their sword.
Stacks had the opening four scores of the game
from Fiachna and Brian Mangan, David Mannix
and Wayne Guthrie as Dingle, against the wind
in the first half, lined out without talisman Paul
Geaney were struggling to get into the game.
However, Conor and Mikey Geaney led the
Dingle counter- response with points. Conor
Geaney, with his second and Matthew Flaherty
added further points for the West Kerry side
to tie the game at 5 points each but Shane
O’Callaghan gave the Rockies a 0-6 to 0-5
interval lead.
Mikey Geaney and Jack O’Shea exchanged
points before Brendan Kelliher took over for
Dingle to score three great points to ease the
West Kerry side ahead.
David Mannix levelled for the Rockies and
with 45 minutes gone, the scores stood at 0-8
apiece. Brendan Kelliher, with his third point of
the game and Conor Geaney eased Dingle two
points clear with ten minutes remaining. Pa
McCarthy kept Stacks in the hunt with a point
before Kelliher landed his fourth.
Stacks finished with 13 men David Mannix
(2nd yellow) and Conor Jordan were dismissed
on red cards.
Kieran Donaghy was now in the action for the
Stacks and in the 6th minute of stoppage time,
‘the Star’ fed Shane O’Callaghan who buried
the ball in the net much to the consternation
of the Dingle defence.

who were wind-assisted in the first half. David

minute before Jonathan Lyne added another.
However, Kieran O’Leary and Tony Brosnan
added points for Crokes who led 0-6 to 0-3 at
the interval.
Jamie O’Sullivan and David O’Sullivan added
points for Legion on the restart to cut the gap
to one but Legion were to go a full 25 minutes
before they added their next score.
Pat O’Shea emptied his bench and introduced
Ambrose O’Donovan and Jordan Kiely, both
made a difference. Tony Brosnan and Jordan
Kiely added points as the Crokes moved 0-8 to
0-5 clear, Crokes ‘keeper Shane Murphy denied
Legion an equalising goal.
Colm Cooper and Jordan Kiely added points to
move the Crokes 0-10 to 0-5 clear. The game
petered out as Crokes added late points from
Kieran O’Leary and Colm Cooper in reply to
two late Conor Keane frees for Legion.
RELEGATION PLAY-OFFS
RATHMORE 4-8
KILCUMMIN 2-9
Rathmore secured their Senior Club Status and
their County Status for another season with
a fully merited five-point win over East Kerry
rivals Kilcummin at the Lewis Road, Killarney
last Thursday evening.
Kilcummin’s cause wasn’t helped when Kevin
Gorman received a straight red card for an
incident involving James O’Sullivan and they
trailed 2-4 to 1-5 at the short whistle, Mark
Reen (15 mins) and George O’Keeffe (24) were
Rathmore’s first-half goal scorers while Mathew
Keane from a Ritchie O’Connor pass found the
net for Kilcummin.
Exchanges were tight in the third quarter

A power-packed second half performance
during which they scored three goals, enabled
Kerins O’Rahilly’s preserve their senior club
status for another year when they defeated
Milltown/Castlemaine in Farranfore on
Sunday.
The game was only a minute old when Rahillys
had the first goal, when Jack Savage set up the
on rushing Kevin Walshe.
Milltown/ Castlemaine dominated the
exchanges thereafter with Mike Burke,
Brendan Delaney, Marcus Mangan and David
Roche gaining good possession and setting up
attacks.
The Mid Kerry side were awarded a penalty
but O’Rahilly’s Gary Kissane saved from John
Blennerhassett.
Points by the impressive Jonathan O’ Sullivan
(3), Gavin Horan and Shane Murphy had the
Mid Kerry men ahead by the 23rd minute.
O’Rahilly’s were awarded a penalty in the 20th
minute, but David Moran’s shot hit the post
and was cleared.
Jack Savage scored O’Rahilly’s first point in
the 24th minute added another from a free,
to leave the half time score at Kerins O Rahillys
1-2 to Milltown/Castlemaine’s 0-7.
The Tralee side started the second half in
whirlwind fashion and within ten minutes had
scored a goal and five points without reply.
Jack Savage added a point and then set up Barry
John Keane for their second goal, followed
by points from Greg O’Connell, Savage, Cian
Sayers and John Ferguson, pushing them six
points ahead by the 37th minute.
Milltown/Castlemaine replied with points from
Jonathan O’Sullivan and Eoin O’Brien, but a
great ball fielded by Tommy Walsh, who burst
through the middle and his low shot ended
in the back of the net for Strand Road’s third
goal.
O’Rahilly’s struck again when a defence
splitting move saw Kevin Walshe palm to the
net for their fourth goal.
Milltown/ Castlemaine battled gamely to
the finish, with points from Marcus Mangan,
Jonathan O’Sullivan and a well taken goal by
Pa Wrenn. They also had a penalty expertly
put way by Jonathan O’Sullivan. David Mc
Loughlin scored O’Rahilly’s final point.

Keanes Supervalu
Killorglin Minor
League Finals
All but one of the Keanes
Supervalu Killorglin Minor football League
Finals have now been played and the clubs
involved must take credit for that achievement
given that games were disrupted by the
Munster Minor championship meeting of Kerry
and Waterford and also by St Brendan College
involvement in the Hogan Cup final.
The one outstanding final is the Division 4A
meeting of Kenmare and Kilgarvan/Tuosist/
Templenoe which will probably be fixed for
Friday week, May 13 due to Kerry minors
Munster Championship meeting with Clare.
There were four finals decided last week;
Division 1 – This was a great advertisement for
the minor code at Tralee’s Austin Stack Park
on Friday where Dr Crokes defeated old rivals
Austin Stacks in a game that went to extra time
on a score of 2-18 to 2-16 with Michael Potts
of Dr Crokes afterwards named as the Keanes
Supervalu Killorglin Man of the Match.
Division 3B – This was a one sided affair at the
Na Gaeil pitch where Currow were too strong
for St Senans and ended up winning on a 5-10
to 0-6 scoreline. Currow’s Jack Daly received the
Keanes Supervalu Killorglin Man of the match
trophy from Seamus Kerrisk on behalf of the
sponsors.
Division 4B – Very little separated Churchill
and Ballymac throughout this game played
in Blennerville on Friday evening last with
Churchill just edging out their opponents
on a 1-10 to 1-8 scoreline. Brendan Sweeney,
representing the sponsors, presented the
Keanes SuperValu Killorglin Man of the Match
trophy to Churchill midfielder Sean Donnellan.
Division 6 – Castlegregory proved too strong
for St Michaels-Foilmore in the Division 6
final played in Cromane on Thursday evening
last eventually winning by 3-10 to 1-4. The
Keanes Supervalu Killorglin Man of the Match
trophy was presented to Jimmy O’Grady of
Castlegregory by Peter Keane.

6:30pm. The competition, a huge undertaking
for the county with over 630 games to be

A meeting of Coiste Chiarrai will take place
on Monday next 9th May @ 8pm in Fitzgerald
Stadium, Killarney. The Draw for Round 1 of
the Novice Championship – first round losers
of the Junior championship – will be made at
the meeting. The report by the Parish Rule &
Player Registration Committee dealing with
South Kerry Clubs will be decided upon at next
Monday’s meeting.
Kerry County Committee have organised a
Service Check of all Defibrillators to be carried
out at the meeting and Clubs are asked to bring
their AED Machines which will be checked free
of charge on the night. Clubs will be given a
list of remedial action (if any) that needs to be
carried out.
Lá na gClub
Sunday next is the designated day nationwide
for Lá na gClub and every club in the county
should mark the occasion in some fashion. The
day is clear of fixtures the importance placed
on the event by Croke Park can be gauged
from the fact that special permission has to be
sought from HQ for any fixture which has to go
ahead.

PEIL FAOI 6/7/8/9/10: Great football was

PEIL FAOI 14: (i) AdeS: 6-7; Léigiún: 6-7. On
Thursday of last week we travelled to Doirín
(Legion) needing only a point to secure a place
in the county league semi-final. We won the
toss and opted to play with a slight breeze
and in perfect conditions. Disappointed with
the previous week’s result, our lads were out
to prove a point against a Legion side that
had won every one of their games! we had a
halftime lead of 0-9…5-5 to 2-5. With the game
about to finish in a draw, Legion scored what
looked like a match winning goal! We witnessed
a quick Rock reaction! Our keeper, Ben Quilter,
reacted quickly and found a ‘Black’n’Amber’
man with his kick out. An inspired run saw
Mervyn Shalemba run into the Legion 14 yard
line and earn us a free kick díreach os comhair
an chúil. With a goal line full of Legion players,
Cian Purcell stepped up and found the back of
the net. Glorious! The referee then blew the final
whistle! And we all went home…satisfied! The
draw placed us in third position in the table.
On Wednesday (4th) our teams played their
semi-finals. Our A team travelled to Gallarus
to face An Ghaeltacht. Our B team headed to
Killarney to face Dr. Crokes.
PEIL FAOI 16: We played v Castleisland

final last Friday. We look forward to the
championship!
CAMPA ‘CÚL’: The Austin Stack Club, Connolly
Park, will host this year’s Cúl Camp on the week
of July 4th – 8th. Bígí linn!
SENIOR FOOTBALL: Austin Stacks 1-9; Dingle
0-11.
We qualified for our first Club Championship
Final since 2003 in as dramatic a fashion as one
could witness, in Annascaul on last Saturday
evening (30th April). A point for Dingle in the
51st minute put them two up, and 15 minutes
had elapsed without a score when in one last
attack in the 66th minute saw the ball won in
the square by Kieran Donaghy. Surrounded
by what looked like the whole 15 members of
the opposition he somehow got his shot in,
and in a total scramble one of our lads (some
say Pa McCarthy, others claim it was Shane
O’Callaghan) steered the ball over the line for
the winner.
We were ahead by the minimum at half time
(0-6 to 0-5).
Thirteen minutes into the second half the
sides were level for the 5th time (0-8 each).
Then Dingle began to dominate – taking the
lead for the first time in the 46th minute and
going two points up just a minute later. Both
sides then swapped points – ours coming from
Pa McCarthy - which left Dingle still ahead
by those two points (0-11 to 0-9) before that
dramatic finish as described at the beginning.
So now it’s on to meet Dr. Crokes in the Final
after they overcame neighbors, Killarney Legion
by 0-12 to 0-7 in their semi final bout. No date
has been fixed for this final as we write.
MINOR FOOTBALL: Dr. Crokes 2-18; Austin
Stacks 2-16 (aet).
This Co. League (Div1) Final, played at a cold,
sunny and breezy Austin Stack Park on last
Friday evening (29th April), had to go to extra
time after the sides were deadlocked on 2-14
each following a pulsating 60 minutes of
football that had almost everything.
Even though we played with the aid of the
strong wind in the first half we still had only a
one point lead at half time (0-8 to 0-7). Three of
those points came from play – Ferdia O’Brien,
Doanagh McKivergan and Joseph O’Connor.
Ferdia also put over four frees and Donagh
added one from a well-taken 45.
The wind was still a factor in the second half
but that didn’t stop us from going into a nine
points lead in the space of eight minutes – a
point each from Ferdia (free) and Cian Liston
and then two splendid goals by Donagh
McKivergan and Joseph O’Connor. After that,
very few would have predicted what happened
in the next 14 minutes. But between the 38th
and 52nd minutes Crokes went on to score 2-7,
while our only contribution was a 45th minute
point by Philip Quilter. That onslaught put
them three clear (2-14 to 2-11) and it looked all
over at that stage.
However, credit to our lads who fought back in
the closing minutes, with three great points –
one from Cian Liston and two by Fergal Ryan
- to level the game and send it to extra time.
Both sides had given their all at that stage and
in the 20 minutes of additional time Crokes
just edged it - scoring four points to our two
– Ferdia scoring both (one from a free). In one
final attack Cian Liston was unlucky to see his
shot for goal blocked away.
Of the 18 who played in this game only 5 will
be over age for next season, so a lot to look
forward to from this panel.
MINOR FOOTBALL: Na Gaeil 2-3; Austin Stacks
3-14. Less than 40 hours after coming off the
pitch in Austin Stack Park on Friday evening our
Minors were back in action again in Killeen on
last Sunday afternoon (1st May) to play in the
postponed round 2 game of the Town League.
We led by 2-6 to 1-2 at the break.
Even though playing against the strong breeze
in the second half, we continued to outscore
our opponents by 1-8 to 1-1. The win puts us
into yet another final and we await a date for
this as we write.

We had a deserved win in this relegation

at half time that this game would go down

THE MIRACLE PRAYER
Dear Heart of Jesus in the past I have asked many favours. This time
I ask you this special one, (mention favour). Take it dear heart of Jesus
and place it within your heart where your Father sees it.
Then in his merciful eyes it will become your favour not mine.
Amen.
Say this prayer three times for three days and your
favour will be granted. Never known to fail.
Must promise publication of prayer.

PRAYER to padre pio
O Jesus, full of grace and charity, victim for sinners, so
impelled by Your love for us that You willed to die on the
cross, I humbly beseech You to glorify in heaven and on
earth the servant of God, Padre Pio of Pietrelcina, who
generously
participated in Your sufferings, who loved You so much
and laboured so faithfully for the glory of Your heavenly
Father and for the good of souls. With confidence I beseech You to grant
me, through his intercession, the grace of which I ardently desire.
