We have a very full calendar of golf events, luncheons, birthdays, rehearsal dinners and receptions planned throughout the month. We are ready for a busy season and seeing everyone enjoying the Course and Club. This month’s Happy Hour will be Derby Day on May 1st. Mint Juleps will be featured & there will be a hat contest for all those would like to participate. We will have prizes for the Biggest Hat, Best Derby Inspired Hat & Best Male Hat!!! Call to make reservations. Please keep in mind the "Taste of Algonquin" to show off our club to your friends and associates. If you know someone that might be interested, now is the time to bring them to the club. As usual, look forward to seeing everyone enjoy their Club. Please let us know how we can enhance that experience for you and your guests. The Golf Shop is busy making sure that you have what you need to be prepared for a great season. In addition to our new collections of Mens and Woman’s Golf apparel, we continue to be an authorized dealer of Maui Jim Sunglasses. We are fully stocked with over thirty styles and four choices of lenses featuring their Polarized Plus 2 technology that blocks out 99.9% of glare, 100% of harmful UV rays, and boosts color and clarity. The next time you are in the shop, try on a pair of Maui Jims and see how light weight and comfortable they are, especially for a hot and humid St. Louis summer day. As always, your member discount applies. New this month, we are running a promotion for our new line of Adidas Golf shoes– simply try on a pair of Adidas mens Golf shoes and receive a free pair of Golf socks (while supplies last). We are also fully stocked with a line of Junior Golf shoes by Adidas with sizes ranging from 2-6 for boys and girls. And speaking of Junior Golf, their season will be here before you know it. We have junior hats, gloves, socks, shoes, and clubs - let us know how we can help get your child ready for the course! We look forward to seeing you in the Golf Shop. 4 With the golf season in full swing, we have several events coming up in May. Saturday, May 9 th, we will have the Two Man Team qualifier. All members of the Men’s Golf Fund are eligible to participate. Full handicaps will be used for the qualifier, which will be one net best ball of the team, as well as for the Four Ball matches played throughout the season. In addition to the above Two Man team event, this year we are going to offer a GROSS (no handicaps) two man tournament. Any member of the Men's Golf Fund may participate and members may participate in both the net and gross tournaments. If you choose to play in both, you do not need to keep the same partner for the two events. There will be no qualifier for the gross tournament and no strokes will be given in any of the matches. The deadline to sign up for the Gross Two Man tournament or the Two Man Qualifier is May 8th. If you have any questions about this event, or any other, please call the Golf Shop. On Saturday, May 16th, we will host the Men’s Club Championship qualifier. Any member of the Men’s Golf Fund may attempt to qualify for the championship flight. All play will be from the Blue Tees and the low 15 gross scores will qualify for the event. In addition to the Championship flight qualifier on the 16th, we will host a new event called the Algonquin Stroke Play tournament. This is an opportunity for those members not attempting to qualify for the Club Championship to compete in an individual stroke play tournament. In this event, full handicaps will be used and tee times will begin immediately following the Club Championship qualifier. If anyone has questions about these events or any others, please contact the Golf Shop and speak with one of the Golf Professionals. Bob Cochran Mid-Am Championship If you are looking to play a great course and test your game by playing tournament golf, we would like to encourage you to participate in the 9th Bob Cochran Mid-Am Championship at Fox Run Golf Club on Monday, May 11th. This 18-Hole Championship will feature some of the best amateur golfers in the St. Louis Area over 25… in other words no college or high school players are eligible. You should join them for a truly unique golfing experience at one of the best golf facilities in the Mid-West. There will be Prizes for Gross & Net Divisions, includes a Practice Round and includes Hors D’ Oeuvres following play all for a $100.00 entry fee. The course will be set-up at 6500 yards, so it’s very playable for all skill levels. This event is one of our most popular so get your entry in as soon as possible. The deadline for entry is April 30th. Entry Forms can be downloaded from our web site at www.stldga.com or from your Golf Shop. This year has been no exception. Staff completed several projects this spring, dodging rain showers, including the bunkers and green surround on number nine and the restoration of number ten following MSD work that connected storm drainage from Algonquin Wood to our lake. This winter also presented an opportunity for us to have many years of sediment and organic material removed from the lake on ten and a fore bay installed, which should reduce the pressure for unwanted algae growth to form on the water’s surface. Spring aeration of our putting surfaces was very successful. Staff removed a good amount of thatch from the soil profile resulting in firm green tops. Our firm and fast approach to course maintenance will again this year be paramount and staff will continue to strive for excellent daily green and course conditions. We have several things to look forward to this upcoming season, most importantly, the resurfacing of our cart paths. Timing for this project to begin will be in mid-July as summer weather patterns will create better ground conditions for such a large undertaking. Less potential for rain will also expedite asphalt contractors around the course and reduce damage and disruption to play. One other upcoming project that will take place as we transition from spring to summer is the suppression of unwanted Bermuda from our rough. As everyone knows the rough here at Algonquin can be extremely difficult not only to maintain but to play from. In an effort to increase playability staff will begin making applications in mid-July to remove Bermuda. The process will bleach the Bermuda and turn the turf white where Bermuda is present. Three to four applications will made this year approximately three weeks apart prior to over-seeding with a more desirable fescue turf. Studies from several universities as well as work completed at other clubs from around the country have shown extremely good control of Bermuda using the same chemistry. Enjoy the spring weather and here’s to another great Golf Season here at Algonquin!
