A THOUGHT FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR FAMILY MATTERS | 2 I ran into an old friend. We talked and reminisced about old times. When we parted, we promised to keep in touch. As she left, she said “let’s be intentional about it.” As I thought about it, the word “intentional” can apply to many areas of our lives. Life is hectic and full of distractions. We INTEND to keep in touch, to volunteer, to donate but life happens and we never seem to get around to it. My promise to myself is to be intentional this year. Lives are at stake. In Marion County alone, over 3,700 children experienced homelessness last year. According to a recent report, while family homelessness continues to increase, the resources to address their needs are decreasing. That is why I have FAMILY MATTERS 2013-2014 ANNUAL REPORT SUCCESS STORIES From Homelessness to “Home” 3-4 to be intentional. Lives are at stake. HONORING OUR VOLUNTEERS Meeting the Needs of Homeless Families, Together! 5 Dayspring Center continues to provide quality services, not just shelter, to Senior Volunteer, Dr. Rudesill 6 homeless families. In the past two years, Dayspring has developed and implemented a comprehensive Children’s Program. Because we understand that children are the most impacted by their family’s homelessness, the program is designed to address the unique needs of our children. The staff of the program conducts assessments, advocates, conducts parenting classes, oversees tutoring and provides summer day camp. Recently, a 12 year old new resident of Dayspring was assessed to be suicidal. She had a plan. She felt she was a burden to her mom and there would be more for her siblings if she was not there. This story possibly would have had a tragic ending if the family had not come to Dayspring. The staff properly assessed the child and got her the help she needed immediately. Lives depend on our being intentional. No child should feel as if they are a burden. As another year fast approaches, Dayspring recognizes the challenges that lie ahead. At least, from the perspective of outsiders. Inside, home life was sometimes tense, especially when her father became angry with her mother. There were words. There were beatings. Lisa would later say she marveled at her mother’s will to temper her father’s outbursts and bring a calm back into the household. At 6, Lisa and her family moved to Detroit. Soon after, her mother suffered the first of many strokes, suspected to be the consequence of her 15 years of domestic abuse. It would also mark the end of her marriage. As Lisa entered her teen years, her mother would be in and out of hospitals. Unable to care for her children, Lisa and her brother were sent to stay with her remarried father in Indianapolis. She recalled they were bittersweet times. She enjoyed her two years at North Central High School, but life was difficult with her step mother and eventually Lisa and her brother were asked to leave. They reunited with their mother and returned to California. Despite the upheaval and instability in her life, Lisa excelled in school. In fact, she graduated with a 4.0 GPA and was thinking about college. For the sake of her boys, she took her last welfare payment and purchased a one-way bus ticket to Indianapolis in August 2012. She hoped her father would be happy to see her and meet his new grandsons. Lisa and her two young sons, now seven and nine, traveled across the country to begin a new life in Indianapolis. Looking back, Lisa’s smile beams as she considers the progress she has made. A “thank you” note from 8-year-old volunteer, Daniel Albright. DAYSPRING IS A SPECIAL PLACE FOR SO MANY REASONS. YOU FEEL THE LOVE AND RESPECT FOR EACH RESIDENT AS SOON AS YOU WALK THROUGH THE DOOR. AT DAYSPRING YOU LEARN ONE OF THE BEST LESSONS OF LIFE: KINDNESS MATTERS. NANCY DINWIDDIE, VOLUNTEER/DONOR These three young ladies, (L to R), Ali Pozsgai, Gabi Pozsgai and Maddie Barbar attend St. Matthews Catholic School and spent several afternoons helping with meal preparation for the families. HONORING OUR VOLUNTEERS | 6 SENIOR VOLUNTEER, DR. RUDESILL Every Wednesday, Dr. Rudesill arrived at noon to assist at the front desk and deliver donations from his church. Students from Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School help out in the kitchen and serve lunch every Thursday. After 15+ years of service, Dr. Rudesill made the difficult decision in 2014 to retire from his volunteer service due to health reasons. We are so grateful to Dr. Rudesill for his many years of service to the homeless families! …I continue to serve and volunteer at Dayspring Center because of the residents and staff. To see a family come to Dayspring and then to leave with a job and a place to call home, is truly wonderful. Heidi Feick, Volunteer For the 6th consecutive year, Charles Schwab employees spruce up the grounds during Volunteer Week in May 2014. MANY YEARS OF FAITHFUL SERVICE One cannot speak on the history of Dayspring Center without including a few of the faith-based organizations that have served meals to the homeless families since the shelter’s beginning: Epworth United Methodist Church (since 1995), The Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation (since 2001), including EVERY Christmas Day, Trinity Episcopal Church (since 1989), Southport United Methodist Church (since 2003) and Compassion Temple (since 2003). Yokota Foundation NEW SHOES FOR THE CHILDREN MJ Insurance has done several creative service projects with Dayspring Center, but it was the “Kicks for Kids” Campaign that showed the deep compassion and attachment the employees felt for the homeless children at Dayspring Center. In October 2014, a few MJ employees launched the campaign by tracing the feet of all the children enrolled in Dayspring programming onto a mural. The mural hung on the main wall at the MJ Insurance building for several weeks. As news of the campaign spread throughout the MJ Insurance network, visitors and employees had the opportunity to adopt a pair of feet for $25 or more. By the end of the campaign, MJ Insurance raised $5,000 to purchase a new pair of shoes for Dayspring’s homeless children. In December, over 30 employees met the Dayspring staff and the children at the Shoe Carnival in Castleton for a shoe spree! Each employee was matched up with a homeless child to help them find their perfect pair of shoes! As the children traveled back to Dayspring Center, the staff remarked how excited all the children were to show their new shoes to their parents. For the MJ employees who participated in the campaign, they will not forget the smiles and even tears on the faces of the homeless children that day. RELAX, IT’S FEDEX COMMUNITY SUPPORT | 8 Everyone at Dayspring breathed a little easier when the FedEx truck pulled into homeless children enrolled in Dayspring our lot in October 2013 and November programming. 2014 to deliver a truckload of supplies for the shelter! Over 500 items, everything from a can of beans to Pampers, were collected from the FedEx Express IND-RT Department as part of “FedEx Cares Purple Bag Contest“. The contest is just one of the service projects FedEx employees do during the fall and spring to support the community. A few weeks later, the truck arrived again packed with toys for the Manager, Lisa Smith, coordinates the collection of needed items at the work site. Her enthusiasm for service is behind every project and is evident when the FedEx truck arrives at the shelter. INDY AUTO RACING’S, ED CARPENTER, AUCTIONED OFF TO HELP LOCAL HOMELESS FAMILIES! At the 2014 Mini-Golf Classic, corporate hole sponsors got into an all-out bidding war as one of Indy Auto Racing’s most popular drivers, Ed Carpenter, was auctioned off to join the top three bidding foursomes for six holes of miniature golf. In the end, Indiana Thermal Solutions, Jarred Bunch and Spidel Burnfin teams won and had Ed Carpenter join them on the course. For the first time since this key fundraising event was launched in 2008, the corporate portion of the tournament was sold out! After an hour and half of fierce competition, first-time Corporate Hole Sponsor, USB Financial Services, took home the coveted traveling trophy and the grand prize! Family teams faced wacky putting challenges earlier from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m., children won prizes at multiple holes and everyone enjoyed a complimentary meal from first-time Hospitality Sponsor, Scotty’s Brewhouse. Over $20,000 was raised, marking the 6th Mini-golf Classic the most successful and the most fun according to its participants. Special thanks to our Title Sponsor, IPL, Patron Party Sponsor, ExactTarget (now Salesforce.com) and Hospitality Sponsor, Scotty’s Brewhouse. A special thank you to the many volunteers who helped behind the scenes and/or served as caddies to give family and corporate teams the wackiest time they ever had on a miniature golf course! COMMUNITY SUPPORT | 10 INVESTING IN INDY’S HOMELESS CHILDREN EVERY YEAR, DAYSPRING CENTER ENGAGES OVER 70 CHILDREN IN A SUMMER PROGRAM DESIGNED TO HELP THEM BETTER COPE WITH THEIR FAMILY’S HOMELESSNESS AND CLOSE THE GAP ON SUMMER LEARNING LOSS. Camp Discovery is considered a special project requiring its own budget and funding. On average, $35,000 is raised annually to provide quality programming to the 70+ homeless children who enroll. No easy task. Each year, Dayspring is able to meet 45% of the project’s budget thanks to long-time funding partners like the Arthur Jordan Foundation and the Summer Youth Program Fund. In addition, the Ayres Foundation, Brave Heart Foundation, Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust, Pacer Foundation, and the PeyBack Foundation, have been generous supporters of Camp Discovery in the last two years. Collectively, they have contributed over $30,000 each year, helping 70+ homeless children return to school prepared to succeed in the classroom and able to cope with their family’s crisis. The support of local foundations and COULD YOU GET OUT OF HOMELESSNESS? individual donors have significantly helped to provide a nurturing place for PLAY “A PAYCHECK AWAY” homeless children to discover, grow and have fun over the summer! AND SEE HOW YOUR STORY WOULD END! Bottom Line Performance, a local learning game solutions company in partnership with Dayspring Center, developed a board game that takes its players through “real-life” homeless circumstances. Each move on the game board presents a new set of choices and challenges as players try to work their way out of homelessness. Mind blowing, heartbreaking, realistic and inspiring—all words players have used to describe their game experience! Whether you make it into permanent housing or remain in the shelter, “A Paycheck Away” could change the way you view homelessness. DAYSPRING INCREASINGLY RELIES ON PRIVATE SOURCES OF FUNDING, AND WE ARE GRATEFUL FOR THE INDIVIDUALS, FOUNDATIONS, CONGREGATIONS, AND CORPORATIONS WHO HAVE PARTNERED WITH US. In 2014 Dayspring Center had a particular challenge in filling the gap left by the completion of a generous foundation grant and an unanticipated reduction in support from another major donor. Together these amounted to a 27% decrease in revenue from 2013 to 2014. We were unable to fully replace the lost income, and by the end of 2014, Dayspring was in a good position to meet the 2014 budget, but had insufficient reserves to continue operating in the first quarter of 2015, when donations and volunteer service are typically at their lowest point. The Board of Directors and Executive Director of Dayspring Center conducted an emergency appeal in December. There was an outpouring of giving from the community, enabling Dayspring to comfortably address the expenses to continue serving homeless families in 2015. EXPENSES The accompanying pie chart shows expenses for 2013/2014 remained unchanged. Family services (61%), including the meal program and case management services for the Emergency Shelter Program and Wellspring Cottage (16%), are direct services for homeless families enrolled in Dayspring programming and account for 77% of total expenses. Dayspring Center continues to control Managerial and Fundraising costs at 25% or less, well below the industry standard of 35%. THANK YOU! WE COULD NOT CONTINUE OUR WORK WITHOUT YOUR HELP. WHY WE CONTINUE TO GIVE “My wife and I give to Dayspring Center because the Center spends the money on important things for residents and not for overhead. The residents have so many needs and Dayspring does an outstanding job fulfilling them. Coming to a shelter is a difficult time for the residents. Dayspring provides caring, counseling, food, shelter, and child care so that residents can get back on their feet.” LOWELL AND PENELOPE LUMLEY “We love to support Dayspring Center, having seen the direct impact on families, specifically those with children, in their time of dire need. While Dayspring provides the very basic needs of food and shelter for families, they also take every measure to quickly get families back on their feet, in every aspect of life. We are blessed to support this organization, and look forward to helping impact and improve the lives of families in great need within our very own community.” THE MILES FAMILY DAYSPRING ANNUAL REPORT 2013-2014 | DAYSPRINGINDY.ORG 15 | DONOR RECOGNITION INDIVIDUAL DONORS Ms. Jamie Miller Mr. Sam F.
