Our October 1, 2014 dinner meeting will be held at Ivar’s Salmon House, North Lake Union. It will be a complete overview of the oldest, well maintained, ferry boat in the Pacific NW. Speaker Ryan Malane will give us a history of Black Ball Ferry Line and the ferry COHO. This beautiful ferry now runs from Port Angeles to Victoria, BC year around except during her annual two week shipyard visit in January. She is the last privately operated US-Flag International Auto and Passenger Ferry Line. Black Ball Line was founded Feb 16, 1816 with service between New York and Liverpool with very large sailing packets across the Atlantic Ocean. In the 1890’s, the founder’s grandson, Charles E. Peabody moved west and settled in Port Townsend, where he founded the Alaska Steamship Co. He carried the “family” flag of Black Ball on to Alaska Steamship Co. and ran it for 75 years. In 1898 Alaska Steamship formed an inland water subsidiary, the Puget Sound Navigation Company, which became the largest privately operated ferry fleet in the nation. Among the famous ferries in this fleet was the MV KALAKALA. In 1951 the Puget Sound Navigation Company’s fleet was sold to Washington State Toll Authority and Washington State began running the ferries. At that time, Black Ball Limited began its British Columbia service. Ryan will follow Black Ball’s history with the building of the Ferry COHO, designed by the renowned naval architect Philip Spaulding continued on following page 1948 2014 PSMHS 2014 Board of Governors John Hough President Frank Immel 1st Vice-President Pat Hartle 2nd Vice-President Lisle Rose Secretary Janice Ridgway Treasurer Board Members: Chuck Fowler Leon Gessula Jim Hannuksela Nathaniel Howe Tom Kane John Lockwood Jim Meckley Clint Miller Roger Ottenbach John Veentjer John Waterhouse BLACK BALL LINE (who is a very long time PSMHS member).
