Sprockids Visits Northern British Columbia
5th Annual Tahltan Band
“Chief ’s Ride” Event
T
his June Doug Detwiller, Sprockids founder and co-founder
of the Aboriginal Youth Mountain Bike Program, spent 11
days visiting northern B.C. aboriginal communities to work
with their youth and community members to help develop their
mountain biking programs. The main focus was the Tahltan
Band, located in Dease Lake and Telegraph Creek. As part of
the adventure Doug took part in Chief Rick McLean’s “Chief’s
Ride” from Dease Lake to Telegraph Creek, a total of 115 km.
This was the fifth year for the event which raises funds for
medical emergencies for Tahltan Band. The event was followed
by an amazing dinner of freshly caught salmon from the Stikine
River, moose roast, and bannock, along with traditional First
Nations’ drumming and dancing. It was an honour to have been
included in such an amazing cultural and community event.

At the junction of the mighty Stikine and Tahltan Rivers there is a very
sacred rock formation called “Siskia’cho.” If you look at the face of the
rock formation you can clearly see the outstretched wings of a raven.
About half way up the cliff there is a cave, and according to Tahltan
legend this is the place where Raven tricked the sun to come out of the
earth and ascend to the sky, thus giving humans sunlight. At this location
the Tahltan Band have their ancestral fishing village, where each year at
this time they gather to harvest their yearly supply of salmon.
