ASSISTANT DIRECTOR’S NOTE:
Dear Residents:
They say life is a journey,
and that odyssey is full of surprising
twists and turns. At some point, we
are destined to reach the end of the
line. If given a choice, I think most of
us would prefer to die peacefully at
home, in our own comfy bed. For those
who receive an end-of-life prognosis,
hospice offers them that opportunity.
What is hospice? Hospice
provides compassionate medical care,
pain management, emotional and
spiritual support tailored to the needs
of people who are facing a terminal
injury or illness with a prognosis of six
months or less. The goal of hospice is
to alleviate suffering, not to speed up
or to slow down the dying process.
The hospice team provides
intermittent nursing visits and a
variety of other services. For example,
hospice has musicians/vocalists who
will serenade the patient and family
members with favorite tunes. Faith
Carlson, our Life Enrichment Director,
was a hospice music therapist and can
attest to the tranquility those melodies
can bring.
We encourage our residents
to take advantage of hospice services,
should the need arise. Not only does
it ease the patient into the last stop on
life’s journey, it also offers comfort and
free counseling to the dying person’s
loved ones.
If you elect to have hospice
care, please let us know immediately,
so we can instruct our staff not to call
911 if a medical crisis arises.
Warmest regards,
Jeri O’Neill

- Eugene Earle -
By Sandi Esselstrom, niece
Eugene Walker Earle was born November 2,
1926, in Cleveland, Ohio. He was the youngest
of three brothers and was very happy growing
up in Ohio. Most of his childhood memories
center around spending summers at a family
cottage in Pennsylvania. Eugene and his friend
often walked several miles to the nearest store
to buy some penny candy. On the way back to the cabin, they always went
skinny dipping in a big pond! A love of music was born during those summers, as he listened to records owned by a nearby farmer.
Eugene graduated from Cleveland State University with a major in engineering. He also proudly served in the U.S. Navy toward the end of World War II.
The major portion of Eugene’s career was spent in the Los Angeles area,
where he was an electrical engineer for the Hughes Aircraft Company. Eugene
retired to Nipomo and thoroughly enjoyed the wonderful Central Coast with
the many beautiful sights which were easily available to him.
As a 9 year-old, Eugene listened to Gene Autry croon “Sing Me a Song of
the Saddle” during a Sunday movie matinee. At this time, a fulfilling hobby of
collecting records was born. Aside from country music, he collected bluegrass,
traditional blues, Hawaiian slide guitar, and rockabilly records. He pursued
this hobby for more than 60 years, eventually owning well over 60,000 records.
Most of his vacations involved searching for just the right records.
In November 2003, Eugene donated his entire record collection to the University of North Carolina. Graduate students came to Eugene’s Nipomo home
to box up all the records and other related materials. The University estimates
that it would take between five and ten years to catalog and digitize Eugene’s
music donation. Eugene’s passion for records and the friends he made from
all over the world during his years of collecting were most important in his life.
Eugene never married, nor had children, but music filled his life and made it
continually interesting and joyful.
Eugene moved to Sydney Creek in February, 2009. He enjoys all the daily
activities, visiting with the other residents and staff, and taking walks in the
garden. Eugene gets most excited about the weekly bus trips. His hearty “hellos” and warm hugs are a memorable part of each day.
Eugene is adored and treasured by his niece and her husband, Sandi and
Cal Esselstrom. Their children and grandchildren love to hear stories from
Eugene’s life because he is such an interesting and unique person.

A DM I N I ST R ATOR’S N OTE:
Dear Residents, Family, & Friends,
Curiosity may have killed the cat ...
but there is hard evidence that it has
the opposite effect on people. One
of the beliefs about aging is that
curiosity decreases from early to late
adulthood.
A study conducted
by The National Institute on
Aging concluded the following:
“Heightened curiosity can add
years to one’s life, increasing
longer life by 30 percent.” Why?
“Because curiosity promotes active
coping through new experience,
new friends, new ways to solve a
problem.”
Not only does curiosity
keep the brain working hard, but
it also lends spice to encounters
with the new and strange, and for
older persons, spice is often in short
supply.
If variety is the “spice of life’...
curiosity is the “wick in the candle of
learning.” Curiosity is an enormous
advantage to the elderly, for it keeps
them in tune with changes in the
world and enables them to better
understand, if not accept, what is
going on.
What are you curious about?
I’d like to know! Maybe we can
investigate it together.
Sincerely,
Lea Bogoyevac, Administrator

Meet A Neighbor, Make A Friend
New Residents
Thursday, 3rd @ 2:00pm
1st Floor Living Room
Garden Creek residents, new and not-so-new, will gather to welcome
newcomers and celebrate life at The Villages. It’s a warm and wonderful
chance to meet new neighbors, get caught up with familiar ones, and build
lasting friendships.
- Eleanor Holland -
Born in Kansas City in 1918, Eleanor Holland made the arduous journey with her
parents and older sister to Newport Beach,
California at the tender age of five. Even
now, she recalls it was a long and tedious
drive. But once here, her friendly nature won
her new friends easily and she was happy
growing up on the sunny Southern California coast.
After graduating from high school, Eleanor studied business at Woodbury College in Los Angeles where she also found time for volleyball
and softball with her always-growing group of friends. Eleanor’s first
job as a new college graduate was as a secretary for several retail credit
companies. And that’s where she met Wilbur, the wonderful man who
would become her husband. Wilbur was a devoted military man who
died unexpectedly, and much too soon.
Strong and resilient, Eleanor continued her successful career as a
secretary, where she met her second husband, Jack. They made their
home in Southern California and raised three children: Scott, Gail, and
Roberta. This adventurous family of five enjoyed traveling together to
such distant countries as Italy and Ireland. But Eleanor says her favorite
destination was right here in the USA – the exotic, tropical, Big Island of
Hawaii.
Eleanor and Jack enjoyed many happy years together, and after his
passing, she decided to make the move to Garden Creek where she
could make new friends. Here, she continues her lifelong pleasures: sewing, embroidery, needlepoint and reading—mostly mystery and romance
novels. And she’s added a couple of new favorites to the list. Eleanor has
become a devoted bridge and bingo player and, typical of her warm and
easy-going personality, she’s made lots of great new friends here at The
Villages.

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR’S NOTE:
Dear Residents:
They say life is a journey,
and that odyssey is full of surprising
twists and turns. At some point, we
are destined to reach the end of the
line. If given a choice, I think most of
us would prefer to die peacefully at
home, in our own comfy bed. For those
who receive an end-of-life prognosis,
hospice offers them that opportunity.
What is hospice? Hospice
provides compassionate medical care,
pain management, emotional and
spiritual support tailored to the needs
of people who are facing a terminal
injury or illness with a prognosis of six
months or less. The goal of hospice is
to alleviate suffering, not to speed up
or to slow down the dying process.
The hospice team provides
intermittent nursing visits and a
variety of other services. For example,
hospice has musicians/vocalists who
will serenade the patient and family
members with favorite tunes. Faith
Carlson, our Life Enrichment Director,
was a hospice music therapist and can
attest to the tranquility those melodies
can bring.
We encourage our residents
to take advantage of hospice services,
should the need arise. Not only does
it ease the patient into the last stop on
life’s journey, it also offers comfort and
free counseling to the dying person’s
loved ones.
If you elect to have hospice
care, please let us know immediately,
so we can instruct our staff not to call
911 if a medical crisis arises.
Warmest regards,
Jeri O’Neill
