Eugene Kofi Siaw better known as FUSHA
was born in Lagos, Nigeria on November 8th.
Raised by his grandparents in Ghana, West
Africa. Fusha’s love of music came about at an
early age from playing the keyboard at school and
in church. He also listened to my different
Ghanaian artist which helped to enhance his love
for rapping.
Fusha arrived to New York at the age of 13
to get a better education as well as to be closer to
his mother. Living in New York Fusha was
influenced by many different rappers. Some of
these influences were NAS, JAY Z, and
JADAKISS.

2014: Year of the Underground
By Gregory McCarriston While staples like Rise in the theater district and Phoenix
Landing in Cambridge have been pushing their sound for years,
this traditionally underground dance music scene is growing
healthier, more vibrant and accepted. Meanwhile, Stuart
Street’s Club Bijou adds a slew of internationally renowned acts
like Dubfire, Adam Beyer, Umek and Hot Since 82 that have
put Boston firmly on the map for house and techno. Artists and
genres that have been massively embraced for years on the
international stage drew only small crowds locally if booked at
all. Now, this sound is filling Boston clubs to capacity.
6
So where is this coming from? While credit must be given to
club management for the talent they book, it is the fans that
make these nights successful. It would seem today that a
maturing fanbase is looking deeper and seeking out new,
more interesting dance music. Beloved New England DJ and
manager of Rise club, Mike Swells chimed in on the
downstream effects of commercial EDM’s success:
“While corporate dollars bring electronic music to more
numbers of people, the popular dish being served is formulaic
and, like all trends it has a shelf-life, everyone gets tired of the
predictability. The reason we’re seeing a heightened interest is
because as the new fan base matures, people are looking more,
and it’s now okay to play 4x4 beats. People have grown to like
club music because of EDM.”
What does it take to please the new seasoned listener?
Swells’ recipe calls for an experience delivered in a compelling
environment, a great sound system like Bijou, Rise or Phoenix
Landing, and an environment where people are there to listen
to the DJ. He adds, “It took a little while for this magic to be
able to brew and the precursor for it is EDM.”
So as countless fans exchange their foam LED tubes for
black v-necks and turn their nose up at commercial EDM,
veterans would remind them to be grateful. As legendary house
producer, Umek puts it, ”When you have a big commercial
scene then you’ll have a strong underground as well.”
LOCAL - SPRING 2014 ISSUE
In 2013, electronic dance music enjoyed more than its 15
minutes of fame, becoming inextricably entrenched in
American pop culture and the New England scene. As the
commercial viability of dance music increased, so too did the
real and figurative distance between artist and audience. As
2014 dawns, a new trend is developing.
From Cambridge to Stuart Street, there is a noticeable shift
towards focus on music, quality of sound and atmosphere over
predictable tracks, bottle service aristocracy and glam-rockesque spectacle. What’s more, genres like deep house, techhouse and techno that have been traditionally underground in
the American dance scene are seeing a surge in the Boston area.
In addition to the health of weekly parties like Re:Set and
Elements at Phoenix Landing, after-hours at Rise and the larger
scale success of Bijou, new developments in the underground
movement are popping up. In nearby Providence, Jeff Leclair
and the Volume Productions crew have a new format to push
their signature house/techno sound with the opening of
Therapy. Meanwhile, a number of Boston DJs are returning to
their roots and finding new ways to share their sound with
audiences.
Offbeat is an artist collective formed with the goal of
cutting out middlemen and closing the gap between artist and
fan. Shikhar Saxena, the group’s founder, explains their mission,
“The direct connection between the artist and the fan was
broken. This year, the artist will take back the control and
deliver what they do best directly to the fan to decide if they like
it or not. That's the direction electronic music and
underground, the DJ will once again become the master of the
ceremonies.”
As new listeners of electronic music grow bored of
formulaic performances and the over saturated commercial
style filling America’s club scene, there is a natural progression
occurring as the language of house and techno become native.
As trendy kids fall off and focus returns to the music, the
discerning fan has found a home in New England; the
underground has emerged.

Local’s Start to Success
We at Local Magazine work with other brands in
the New England area. Locals that are looking to
reach out to other artists but don’t have the means to
get started.
Our program can help get your brand out there.
This season, we took the brand HZRDUS above and
beyond with their launch this March. We organized
several photo shoots for them to help them get their
website online featuring other local artist’s work as
well, such as rapper Dieverse. Our photography
team worked together for the designer, Ivan, to get
product photos of all his designs free of charge.
Each season we take on another project to help
a brand dedicated to the cause of helping other
small time artists promote and collaborate.

Malaika Clothing strives to be one of the
premium leading lifestyle designers in the
fashion world. Malaika means “angel” and
is derived from two African languages,
Swahili and Luganda.
Malaika-Clothing was founded by Mr.
Joseph Malaika. He developed an incredible
love for fashion at a very young age. His
passion for style increased tremendously
within the last seven years and forced him
not only to further explore the world of
fashion, but also to add his own twist and
creativity to the industry. Malaika soon
realized that his ambitions and goals would
only be realized and satisfied through
starting his own brand.
In early 2009, Joseph started his own
clothing brand and called it MalaikaClothing. He has since then teamed up with
family members, his brother Michael, his
father, Mathew, and close friends. They
continuously offered support and guidance
on how to establish the brand as one with
outstanding quality.
Malaika-Clothing takes great pride in
producing quality products. We invest a
tremendous amount of time in making sure
that while our products aim to satisfy our
customers with their design, style, taste

"throw roses into the abyss and
say: 'here is my thanks to the
monster who didn't succeed in
swallowing me alive'" Nietzsche
What initially inspired you to start
writing? What convinced you to get a
book made for your poetry?
Well, my brother is both a prolific writer and
philosopher, and has pretty much inspired me all
through out my life. He has had a huge influence
in steering my taste for writing. First of which was
Baudelaire's les fleur du mal and Rimbaud’s a
drunken boat. So, I guess that answers both
questions really.
Are you interested in collaborating
with other local artists?
My first choice would be to work with my good
friend Nicholas Lima, an excellent artist homed
out of Newport, just in hopes of promoting his
excellent work. Initially, I wanted him to do the
cover of the booklet. I don’t know many other
illustrators but I am pretty open to working with
people.
How did you get started?
I have been kind of a recluse in the sense of
getting involved, making the booklet to hand out
to close friends was my first step. Only two or
three very close friends knew that I had been
writing for a little while. The few close friends that
I had constantly shown my small musing too
urged me to put something together and I thank
them for that.

The Space is an innovative and
community-driven center on the West Side
of Providence that offers yoga, meditation,
and healing. Twenty-six year old Emily
Leahy is the founder and visionary behind
The Space, whose mission is to support
vibrant living on every level. "I needed to
create something beyond a yoga studio or
wellness center; I had an idea to fill in the
holes and gaps. I envisioned a center that
was filled with art, science, music and life. A
center whose purpose is like a spider weaving
a web: to interconnect healers, teachers,
artisans, musicians, and entrepreneurs to the
community we are destined to serve."
Emily's passion for creating The Space
comes from her own personal journey of
transformation. Emily started practicing
yoga in 2006 during her freshman year of
college. At that time she was paralyzed with
anxiety, disorder, and self-sabotaging
patterns. Yoga created space in her mind to
experience life from a different perspective.
She began feeling more like a child, seeing
the world with fresh eyes and with limitless
potential. Yoga was her medicine, she
practiced nearly daily as she studied to be an
elementary school teacher at Emmanuel
College in Boston, MA. Yoga had a
enormous impact on her focus, grades,
health, social life, and inner and outer
strength. Senior year of college Emily spent
countless hours each night researching ways
she could afford yoga teacher training.
Merely months after graduation she was
offered an opportunity to live and work in
the Berkshires in exchange to become a 200hour certified yoga teacher. When she
returned from her training in the fall, she
accepted a full-time position as a First Grade
teacher in the Boston Public School District.
A year later she was hired in Mendon-Upton
Regional to teach Second Grade. Emily
worked as a school teacher for two years
integrating yoga into the classroom, as well
as after-school and grant-funded programs.
Emily furthered her service by teaching yoga
to adults at night and becoming a Master
Reiki practitioner. It became clear that
empowering people of all ages through
mindfulness and healing techniques was her
t r u e c a l l i n g, s o s h e ex p a n d e d h e r
qualifications to include certifications in
Yoga Ed. Grades PK-K, K-8, 9-12, and
Living Foods Chef and Educator. To fulfill
this purpose full-time Emily took a leap of
faith in 2011 and left the security of her
school teaching job behind, trading in desks,
crayons, and tests for mats, blocks, and
lavender-scented eyepillows. For the last
three years Emily has worked in a variety of
yoga studios and centers offering her
services, and completed additional trainings
in Jikiden Reiki, Max Meditation, Clinical
Hypnotherapy, and other lineage-based
healing modalities. She began to envision a
healing and education center that would
merge her cumulative experience with her
path of service. She had only been living on
the West End of Providence for a few
months when divine intervention connected
her with an angel investor, and the center
was born right in her new neighborhood.
The Space is currently the only center
in Rhode Island that offers these lineagebased services such as Life Activation and
Jikiden Reiki. Emily has seen many people
move forward with this unique and powerful
energy work. Students attending classes at
The Space are being enlightened to the fact
that energy can be manipulated and we have
individual control of that transformation.
Realizing the potential of that control can be
overwhelming. The Space offers accessible
and empowering tools to awaken and enliven
every aspect of true self and help create and
live a more fulfilling life. "If you can't wrap
your brain around something, try a different
organ," says Emily. "Even in business there
are risks I had to take that did not logically
make sense. That's what makes life worth
living: when you make that jump and follow
your heart. I have been enjoying bringing my
vision into reality and can't imagine a better
community to serve than Providence, Rhode
Island. It is a blessing to be a part of the
revitalization that is happening here. In a
world that is overloaded with information
and external stimulation, The Space gives
members of the community a place to think,
feel, and explore themselves. I look forward
to connecting with more people of all ages as
we expand our horizons and experience the
magic together."

Warf moved to Rhode Island at a

Warf was always fascinated with film,
photography and music. At a young
age, Warf began making wacky videos,
and at around the age of 12 started his
own public access show called Taylor

when Warf was incarcerated for 2
years. During this time at his local
prison,he became popular after he
started making his own mixed media
zines which he called Vice City.
After his release, he began a small
business under the name Vice City

producing music and videos. Warf has
been hard at work, returning to the
Public Access circuit with "The Late
Night Show with Taylor Warf," a more
raw spin off of his earlier show.
Throughout the years, Taylor has also
been active in the Rhode Island Music
scene playing in bands like Gila
Monster, Slut Dungeon and The Male
Perverts. Warf also secretly worked on
musical projects under monikers such
as: Sisterhood, The T.Geils Band, The

Boston Singer/Songwriter

I’m a singer-songwriter from Boston. My
whole life was always about music. I’m
originally from Russia, and there I used to be a
radio DJ for many years, working on popular
radio stations in Sochi, Moscow and other
cities. When I came to United States, I
realized that I have to do something of my
own, so I co-founded a music facility called
Parallel Sound Group. We do a lot of things,
but mainly we provide musicians with fully
equipped rehearsal rooms and recording
services. This place became my second home.
There I finally got a chance to record my own
songs. I started writing and singing in middle
school, so I’ve got a lot to record.
I try to work in all types of music, because I
like to experiment and create something
different. I’ve already released my debut
album and 4 singles. All releases can be found
in major online stores. Also I got 3 music
videos for my songs.
In 2013, I collaborated with my friend Sergei
Kuzmenko. As a result, our music video
“When I Want You” became very popular on
YouTube.
In the nearest future, I’m going to start
recording my new song, and I hope it will be
released this coming summer. So stay tuned!

Dieverse
Providence Rapper/Producer

Photography by Sergei Pyuro from White Russian
Born October 31, 1994, Brandon Lee
(Dieverse) grew up on the south side of
Providence, Rhode Island. Coming up as
an African American surrounded by bad
influences and little to no role models,
Dieverse had to grow up fast. What
encouraged Dieverse to break away from
the norm was his firsthand experience of
living without his parents and knowing
that they weren’t actively in his life due to
drug use. Through the tough exteriors of
his loved ones Dieverse knew he had to
find an outlet or way to vent.
Dieverse had many outlets
(skateboarding, writing graffiti, MC-ing,
and photography) he’s always been a
very expressive person. His number one
support system was his guardian and
Grandmother Anna Lee. Dieverse
learned patience, trust, and love from his
Grandmother and when she passed in
2010, Dieverse was torn but that didn’t
stop him from getting his voice heard.
As Dieverse continued to skate, write
graffiti, rap, and take photographs, he
kept his grandmothers words of
encouragement in the back of his mind.
Dieverse is now in college, working, and
doing all he can to make something of
himself, something huge.

Crosswalk Catwalk
Providence Street Fashion
LOCAL - SPRING 2014 ISSUE
By Bianca Jones Pearson
Crosswalk Catwalk was founded in September of 2013.
This outdoor runway event is the first of its kind, designed to
create awareness of the local fashion community as well as
encouraging collaboration amongst these individuals. As artists,
the importance of practicing and showing your work is
imperative. Crosswalk Catwalk affords these artists not only the
opportunity to show, but to develop meaningful relationships
with other members of our own growing community of
designers, photographers, stylists, models and hair and makeup
artists.
Coco Chanel was quoted as saying "fashion that does not
reach the street is not fashion" and we take this statement very
seriously. Our interactive runway show takes designers and their
models to historic Thayer Street, where models walk a
continuous loop from CVS to Fro Yo World, Starbucks and back
up to Second Time Around. At each street corner, a local
photographer is positioned to capture the models as they stop to
pose before crossing the street.
This year, I wanted to set a challenge for the participants. I
was so inspired at the artistry displayed by several designers at
last year's show. Their lines had a very clear "feel" to it. From
color to style and attitudes – several designers and their teams
nailed it. To encourage that same spirit of "over-the-top ness"
crosswalk catwalk has established a theme and is implementing a
panel of judges to score the designers and crown a "queen" or
"king" of the crosswalk. Our theme is pep rally, and we are
expecting our designers to "bring it."
This year we are excited to re-establish some of our
partnerships from the past. Unlimited Styles Barbershop and
Salon is back to work with our designers and their models. We
are very excited to again work with RIMA, Rhode Island
Modeling Agency, who's overwhelming support for this event
last year was so incredible.

Cross Walk Cat Walk
takes place on
Historic Thayer St in
Providence, Rhode
Island. It allows local
artists to display their
fashionable projects
to the open public on
the artsy streets on
the East Side.
Crosswalk Catwalk is currently
accepting applications for
Designers, models, hair and
makeup artists, and stylists.
This event was inspired by two iconic New York City events
and individuals. Improv everywhere's "Frozen in Grand
Central" and iconic fashion photographer Bill Cunningham's
documentary regarding street fashion. Links to both videos can
be found on the crosswalk catwalk website at
www.crosswalkcatwalk.com
Our goal through establishing and running Crosswalk
catwalk is giving individuals in the area the opportunity to
showcase their work. Breaking into this exciting industry can be
difficult, expensive, and downright frustrating. Everyone is
looking for their opportunity to shine, and we always hope to be
able to afford them that opportunity.
Crosswalk Catwalk is currently accepting applications for:
designers, models, hair and makeup artists, and stylists.
The difference with this runway show is that unlike a
traditional show where all show related activities are carried out
in a central location, our show is a flash show. Designers and
their models are expected to prep offsite for the show, and come
prepared to walk precisely at the time of the show. The idea is
that the show abruptly takes over the street. Suddenly everyone
on the street and sidewalks becomes a part of this event.
Crosswalk Catwalk brings fashion to the people. Our event
offers designers, models, photographers, stylists, and cooperating
hair and makeup artists the opportunity to interact with
everyday people, and their potential future clients. We hope to
create a strong community of local artists while also making the
general public more aware of our presence in this fantastic area.
