OVERLOOK “Created for the members and friends of Wintergreen Resort” Winter 2007/2008 While You Were Sleeping Cool Pedicure Holiday Tastes Calendar of events what’s new? FURTHER EFFORTS TO KEEP THE ‘GREEN’ IN WINTERGREEN! As part of our ongoing effort to be environmentally responsible, Wintergreen Resort has purchased Renewable Energy Credits (R.E.C.’s) that will significantly offset its consumption during the next year. An REC purchase guarantees the amount of electricity the resort uses is replaced onto the power grid with renewable energy. With the purchase of the RECs we are counterbalancing the electricity used for three ski lifts. Wintergreen Resort is purchasing 791,652 kilowatt hours (KWh) of RECs in the next year from various sources that include wind, biomass, and low-impact hydroelectric. Wintergreen Resort is keenly sensitive to the delicate balance between nature and development and we will continue to be responsible in our energy management practices. Welcome to the 2007-08 Winter Season! For more than three decades, Wintergreen Resort has provided members and guests with an array of winter sport options, fine dining, oversized accommodations and just plain fun. This season will prove to be no exception. New options at the resort are sure to be a hit with your family, beginning with the always comfortable family fun center, The Dome at Out of Bounds located at Discovery Ridge, to glade skiing, to new exotic treatments at The Wintergarden Spa, to indoor golf instruction at the Instructional Studio at Devils Knob. Of course, visitors can still enjoy indoor tennis at Devils Knob, golf at Stoney Creek and expert personal or group instruction on the slopes with one of our highly trained staff members. A visit from our mascot Ridgely or a day at the Treehouse will delight children …the place where fun is always in vogue. So whatever your interest, age, expertise or taste, please be assured that over 1,000 Wintergreen Resort employees stand ready to make your visit to Wintergreen a most enjoyable experience. If we can do anything to make you more comfortable, please don’t hesitate to call on us. Cordially, Wintergreen Resort SUNRISE GLADES OPENS THIS WINTER Wintergreen Resort is offering glade skiing this year to all advanced skiers and riders. Sunrise Glades is Wintergreen’s first off-trail slope and will provide an exciting new adventure. Glade skiing is enjoyed on wooded terrain and our new auxiliary slope is located between Tyro, Tequila, and Sunrise. Advanced skiers and riders should remember that this area is not groomed and will be available only when natural conditions permit. If you enjoy off-trail skiing or riding, Sunrise Glades is for you! For up-to-date slope information, check the daily ski reports at wintergreenresort.com. GIVE YOUR PALETTE A RIDE THIS WINTER SEASON! We are happy to announce the opening of the new and improved Pryor’s Porch Cafeteria. In addition to its great location the sparkling Pryor’s Porch features a complete new interior design and, most importantly, great food for the hungry guest. Because Pryor’s Porch is located near the Blue Ridge Terrace, it is a great place to meet friends and warm up with a toasty hot chocolate. All of Wintergreen’s restaurants are featuring new menus this winter season, so there will be something to please every palette! 5 While you were sleeping I But while some activities come to a close, much of the resort is just beginning to come to life. At areas seldom seen by guests, work crews are reporting for duty including a hearty group of about 10, who will be up all night, operating the resort’s sophisticated snowmaking system and grooming the slopes. As the crews work throughout the night, the enjoyment of thousands of guests lies in their abilities to assist Mother Nature in the creation of a winter wonderland. “Our staff is our No. 1 resource,” says Jay Roberts, Vice President of Mountain Operations for Wintergreen Resort. “We have to get the product right for the next day’s customers. You want to be proud of it, enough that you want to put your name on it.” Wintergreen’s round-the-clock dedication to their mountain is essential to maintaining its reputation for providing skiers with snow surfaces of exceptional quality. And twice, Wintergreen has earned honors as “Best Ski Resort” by the readers of WashingtonPost.com; a distinction unmatched by any other facility. Stretched atop the Blue Ridge Mountains, the resort is recognized as the most delightful winter playground in the Mid-Atlantic. Snow-covered amenities include the most extensive terrain for skiers and riders alike, from beginners to experts, as well as Virginia’s largest tubing park. It all starts, simply enough, with snow. While Wintergreen celebrates its natural snowfall, the resort is also home to one of the world’s most sophisticated snowmaking systems. Installed during the 2002-2003 winter season and continuously upgraded, this state-of-the-art York® computerized snowmaking system allows Wintergreen to consistently offer the Mid-Atlantic’s best skiing and snowboarding surfaces. “We can do wonderful things with it,” Roberts said. “It is nice to have natural snow, but our snowmaking system and experience using the system allows us to make the highest quality snow across the mountain quickly. We have the ability to start and stop each gun from a desktop at the snowmaking plant.” Wintergreen is the only ski area on the East Coast to boast 100 percent of its terrain covered by automated snowmaking. Each night, up to five snowmakers are on the trails implementing the complex system that involves approximately 40,000 linear feet of pipeline, with outlets every 125 feet, more than 400 snowguns and 45 weather stations. The result is often called the “gold-standard” of snowsports surfaces, with a uniformity of depth and consistency of snow quality from the top of the slopes to the bottom. And, as so many snow sport publications have noted, the system enables the resort to quickly “rebound” and provide excellent conditions following rain or the occasional warm spell. The system is so powerful and efficient, it can make enough snow to cover the equilivent of a football field with 12 feet of snow in a 10 hour period! “Quality is more important than quantity,” Roberts says of the snowpack. “You only ski on the top couple of inches. You can have 100 inches of snow, but if the top surfaces are of poor quality, the rest is insignificant. We balance the depth of our snow with the quality of our snow.” ...continued www.wintergreenresort.com An in-depth look at Wintergreen t’s almost 11 p.m. and only the most dedicated skiers and snowboarders remain on the mountain, squeezing in one more run on the expansive lighted terrain at Wintergreen Resort. While some guests stroll back toward their warm rooms for the night others stop off at The Edge for a little something before last call. COMFORT FOOD For Your Feet 7 THE WINTERGARDEN SPA’S “SOLE SUNDAE” PEDICURE continued... Once the snow is produced, it’s up to the “groomers” to shape and smooth the trails in a night-long process. They drive grooming machines that work the snow a bit like a riding lawnmower creates a uniform height to a golf course fairway….except this equipment weighs in at over six tons! And that part of the job can be uncomfortably hot – yes hot – despite working at 3,515 feet in the middle of December. “The outside temperature can be in single digits, but you can fry eggs on the dashboard of a grooming tractor,” notes Scott Gunnell, Slope Services Manager at Wintergreen Resort. Despite the tough conditions Gunnell says dedication and pride are prime motivators of the staff. “Nothing is impossible. After all, we’re making snow and operate a ski area in the South. We do what many think is impossible every day.” They drive grooming machines that work the snow a bit like a riding lawnmower creates a uniform height to a golf course fairway…. except this equipment weighs in at over six tons! Wintergreen Resort’s Wintergarden Spa is serving up the ultimate in comfort food— for your feet! You’ll melt away with sheer relaxation when you get a “taste” of the spa’s new Sole Sundae Pedicure. First, your feet are dipped into a soak of your favorite ice cream flavor. Then they are refreshed with a sherbet scrub, before being enveloped in your choice of a chocolate, marshmallow or caramel foot mask. A foot massage with body icing infused with Shea butter and vitamins follows, creating the perfect topping to this unique and fun pedicure. What a tasty treat for your feet! To schedule a Sole Sundae Pedicure or any of the Wintergarden Spa’s delicious treatments, call 434-325-8562. Ultimate Indulgence About 6 a.m., the trails are ready for inspection by Roberts and others on staff, as well as the Ski Patrol, who head out on their snowmobiles to ensure that everything is ready and safe. “Two hours before the mountain opens, we look at the product and determine if additional snow is needed, or if we need to do more grooming to make the trails look great,” Roberts said. “We have to make sure that when the curtain goes up, we are ready for showtime.” All the work has been done “backstage” over night. As the sun rises, the first of the day’s skiers and snowboarders are in the parking lot, unloading their gear. They can’t wait to be the first ones on the trails. There might even be a few who were up all night, thinking about the snow. If you are looking for a well deserved break for you or a loved one The Wintergarden Spa’s Ultimate Indulgence package is the solution. Whether enjoyed together or as a gift this most wonderful experience will be remembered for years to come. The Ultimate Indulgence includes: While Wintergreen celebrates its natural snowfall, the resort is also home to one of the world’s most sophisticated snowmaking systems. • Your preferred lodging • 90 minute LaStone Massage • 60 minute Lavender Crush Body Scrub • 90 minute Signature Facial • Caviar Pedicure • $50 Spa retail merchandise voucher • Access to the Aquatics & Fitness Center www.wintergreenresort.com Or, more accurately, every night. Lookout Below! Because Anyone Can Slide At Wintergreen, winter is more than skiing and snowboarding. We’re the most popular resort in the region because, in addition to great skiing and boarding, guests enjoy a myriad of activities including sliding on our two tubing parks: The Plunge! and The Slide. Out of Bounds Under-Cover If you recently visited Wintergreen, you may have noticed something new at our Out of Bounds outdoor adventure center, Discovery Ridge. While at first glance it may appear to have been a giant mint kiss, a meringue cookie or even an onion dome…it is actually our newest family recreation amenity…. The Dome at Out of Bounds. If keeping the children busy is an important part of your Blue Ridge escape, you’ll want to become very familiar with The Dome. And why not? The 5,400 square-foot space houses our inflatable playground, Bullwinkle the mechanical bull, a collection of arcade games and as much indoor fun as we can pack in. The Dome will also be the place to catch a movie on a gianormous inflatable screen. Just bring a blanket and pillow…we’ll provide the popcorn! The Plunge! is Virginia’s largest tubing park. Imagine being atop a ten-story building and gazing over a hill that’s longer than three football fields. Now imagine racing downhill on a tube at speeds reaching 30 mph. That’s The Plunge!... thrills and chills without the spills. Then to make the experience more enjoyable, a conveyor lift will bring you and your tube comfortably and quickly back up the hill so you can do it again…and again. Many sliders call it the “scream machine” and you’ll agree! It’s just plain tubular fun. Inclement weather? Who cares! Having a temperature controlled environment means you will enjoy The Dome all year around…rain, snow or sunshine, because it’s a completely temperature controlled environment. So stop in this winter and join in the fun…your entire family will be glad you did. www.wintergreenresort.com For a gentler ride, families with small children will find all the excitement they need on The Slide. Open on weekends and holidays, this family-friendly setting offers one hour sessions for only $10 per person…just long enough to work up some red cheeks and the need for some warming hot chocolate. Why not take us up on our special Guaranteed Learn to Ski & Ride offer for tubers? As an added value, tubers can take a 75 minute ski lesson, equipment rental and beginner area lift access for just $15. There’s no better deal in the entire eastern United States. So remember, while Wintergreen Resort may be best known for great skiing and snowboarding, the screams of excitement you hear may be coming from our famous tubing parks. Because after all, anyone can slide! Tubing is the perfect party venue and with groups of 20 or more, you’ll save! Call 434-325-8165 For a day of ultimate children’s fun, combine Out of Bounds with the excitement of tubing. 9 Sweets for the Sweet... To many, the holiday season is the time to get out the flour, sugar and sweet spices. Wintergreen associates recently held a dessert recipe contest and we’re happy to share the winning submission recipe with you. Eggno g Mo Introducing Betsy Dunkerton’s “Eggnog Mousse with Krumkaka cookies!” Betsy advises that the key to both these recipes is fresh spices, with “freshly grated nutmeg and ground cardamom making all the difference.” Eggnog Mousse: “This recipe is from a friend of my mother’s and we would serve it over the holidays. The sweet spices speak to the holiday and fluffy mousse reminds me of snow. If Santa was lucky that year, he had a plateful waiting for him on Christmas Eve!” The challenge to this recipe is to make sure that the custard is cooked enough to be thick, but not so much that it curdles. Then, it needs to be cooled - but not set. If the custard sets up hard, you’ll have little lumps of custard that won’t mix into the cream and egg whites. You want to have a perfectly smooth texture that just melts in your mouth. Krumkaka: “My Aunt Joanne married a Norwegian and discovered cardamom, a favorite Scandinavian spice. This recipe highlights the cardamom, but to make it extra special, use freshly ground cardamom. The difference is remarkable.” We know this dessert will make your holiday tastier. I’m 42 years old and my kids are 12 and 15. Any ideas? Q: HELP! I have a four-year-old daughter who wants to learn to ski but I’m concerned that an all-day program might be too much. What do you suggest? Q& A Here are some of the frequently asked questions (and answers!) that may help you plan your winter season trip to Wintergreen Resort. A: We recommend The Treehouse for your child. Mogul Monkeys, created for children ages 4-12, offers a full day of ski lessons and indoor camp activities. The Treehouse provides a safe A: Wintergreen’s Guaranteed Learn to Ski or Snowboard is your best choice. What other activities, in addition to snowsports, are available during the winter season? learning area with a dedicated staff. The addition of our new conveyor lift makes getting up the slope easy as pie! A: Ski & Tee – As you may have seen on The Weather Channel, the 3,000 foot difference in elevation between the ski area and the valley, home of the Stoney Creek Golf Course, provides a temperature difference that often reaches 20 degrees. So start your morning making a few ski runs and then head down the mountain in the afternoon for some golf. Simply present your same day lift ticket and your green fees are on us! Ski and tee on the same day for the price of a lift ticket – only at Wintergreen. Also consider Mountain Mornings, a 5-week program offered on Wednesdays. Children ages 3-6 enjoy activities including progressive ski lessons. In the meantime, you can ski for free or even visit the Wintergarden Spa with a friend. Q: I can’t keep up with my 12 year old – he’s a much more advanced skier than me. What are my options when we visit this winter? Tuckahoe #8 A: Three options come to mind: Out of Bounds – New this year, Out of Bounds is under-cover offering fun even in inclement weather. See the story on page 8 for a full description of activities. 1.) Mountain Explorers is for kids ages 7-14. Fullday or half-day lessons are available and classes are grouped by ability. 2.) Also consider Ski Buddy - a skiing or snowboarding companion for your child. Your “buddy” will be with your child all over the slopes for two hours of fun! 3.) The Blue Ridge Club may also be a solution. It’s a five-week program that is also divided into different ability groups and ages. The Club provides the opportunity to improve both of your skills over the season. Should you have additional questions, please Interior of The Wintergarden Spa The resort also offers indoor tennis at the Devils Knob Tennis Center. The Aquatics & Fitness Center features an indoor pool, hot tubs, sauna and steam rooms and a fully equipped fitness center. Of course, the renowned Wintergarden Spa is a four season favorite of our guests. The treatments will leave you feeling relaxed and refreshed after a day on the slopes. We also highly recommend a visit to the Wintergreen Nature Foundation. They can suggest winter hikes that suit your level. You’ll be amazed at the crystal clear panoramas that have opened up during this season. 15 www.wintergreenresort.com Family Memories MEMBER PROFILE The bride arrives in style. Depending on the season, their guests may head for the slopes, the spa, the hiking trails or grab their gear to go rock climbing, rappel down a cliff or play golf. Some have a favorite combination of things; others like to try it all. And with 11,000 acres at Wintergreen Resort, there is plenty of room to relax. Ed and Janie understand the variety of interests, and the respective enthusiasm for each. Their combined family — Ed has two daughters, Janie has a daughter and a son — has thrived at Wintergreen, where the most treasured activities are right outside the door. The bride, too, was a vision, arriving at the ceremony in a black carriage drawn by a matched pair of white horses. A classical guitarist provided the perfect accompaniment. The reception was nearby in the ballroom of the Mountain Inn. Every detail of the extraordinary event was orchestrated by Wintergreen Resort’s Catherine Pearce. It all came together beautifully. From accommodating 100 guests in condos and homes to planning the ceremony and reception, working with Wintergreen made a monumental task manageable. As Ed and Janie know from nearly 20 years of sharing Wintergreen Resort with their family and friends, getting everyone together for one event can be a challenge, but it was worth it for a day they will never forget. In September, the entire family and close friends gathered at Wintergreen from points near and far. For once, the group didn’t immediately scatter. This one time, they shared a single priority for an outdoor activity: the wedding of Janie’s daughter, Jennifer, at the Blue Ridge Overlook. “It is absolutely gorgeous, a perfect place to have a wedding,” Janie said. “It meant a lot to her to have her wedding outdoors. And up there, all the views are amazing, any time of the day.” Luxury Homes Bring New Meaning to Photos courtesy Kevin Blackburn S cheduling the arrival of friends and family is never a problem for Ed Hanna and Janie Wurzel. However, once they arrive at Wintergreen Resort, it’s hard to keep track of where they are going. “Everyone fans out to enjoy their favorite things that Wintergreen has to offer,” Ed explains. “It can be a pretty eclectic group.” The bride and her mother share a special moment. “HOMEWORK” When determining a meeting site for your smaller group, consider a unique setting that’s sure to invigorate. While typical hotel meeting rooms provide the basic essentials, only Wintergreen offers private settings where 11,000 acres of pristine scenery, a private chef, even a pool table and spacious outdoor decks can all be standard ingredients of the “set-up.” need to leave. Just step outside and be surrounded by the ancient and awe-inspiring Blue Ridge Mountains while a chef prepares a menu created specifically for your group. For a special touch, consider “Team Cooking” or arrange for chair massages administered on the deck by a member of our renowned Wintergarden Spa staff. At Wintergreen, you can select from more than 20 luxurious, fully furnished privately owned homes that provide the environment required to complete complex agendas, open minds and generate new, meaningful ideas.
