The www.liberecky-kraj.cz tourist portal
The Liberec Region has a tourism web portal at www.liberecky-kraj.cz which constitutes
the most extensive database of tourist information in our region. The aim of this presentation
is the promotion of historical monuments, tourist attractions, options for active holidays and
a wide range of services in the area of tourism. At present, the portal exists in 6 language
versions: Czech, English, German, Polish, Dutch and Russian.
Moreover, all of the data, photographs and other information have been transferred to a common data warehouse with the option of the very simple sharing of this data with further
websites. At the same time, the editorial system enables all collaborators-editors to participate
in the updating of the information. This cooperation not only leads to a significant reduction
in costs during the administration of the individual web pages, but also to their high state of
currentness.
And what awaits the visitors to the www.liberecky-kraj.cz website? Apart from the aforementioned articles and tourist attractions, the portal also offers a map portal, an event calendar, a video gallery, classic and panoramic photographs and virtual photography, a catalogue
of services and products on offer and tips for cycle and walking trips where it is also possible to
print out a wide range of services in the area of accommodation, catering and cultural events.
The Benefit Program
The BENEFIT tourist card enables you to make significant
savings when undertaking sports and other activities in
the Jizera Mountains. The card is available at the majority
of information centres and at selected accommodation
outlets in the region for 35 CZK. The current discounts at
the individual places can be found on the tourism server
www.severnicechy.info.
first passes through a 15 km flat section from
the town of Jelenia Góra to Piechowice, from
where it then twists upwards and gradually
gains height through a series of long turns.
The train windows present a unique view of
the northern slopes of the Giant Mountains.
On the other hand, the builders on the Czech
side of the mountains wanted to shorten the
track from Tanvald as much as possible. The
steep climb which regular locomotives would
not have been able to overcome was made
possible by the addition of a rack bar between
the rails which the locomotives use to ascend
the mountain. As well as this, a number of
tunnels were also cut along the track. The longest of them is almost one kilometre long (for
a long time, this was the third longest tunnel
in the Czech Republic).
The new delineation of the borders after
the 2nd World War and the severing of economic and social links meant the discontinuation
of operations. However, the line, built with
proverbial German thoroughness, survived without any significant damage up to the beginning of the 1990’s when it once again became
possible to organise a number of special trips
after changes in the political conditions had
occurred. The immense efforts of a number
of enthusiasts and local authorities resulted in
the commencement of the reconstruction of
the line in 2009. The work was completed one
year later and regular train operations became
possible. The repairs were largely financed
from contributions from the European Union.
During the tourist season, the timetable
currently offers five pairs of trains a day
between Szklarska Poręba and Harrachov or
Kořenov, where it is possible to change onto
Czech Railways’ trains which travel inland. The
transport in the cross-border section is provided by the Viamont Regio Company and then
by Przewozy Regionalne on the Polish side,
which also operates the connecting passenger trains to Jelenia Góra.
It is possible to travel in the Kořenov –
Harrachov section of the line for the Czech
Railways or Viamont tariff depending on the
chosen train. The IDOL tariff also applies to this
route. The Przewozy Regionalne tariff applies
on the Polish side and the ticket price must
be paid in Polish zloty. The ticket price for the
section from Harrachov to the state border
By Train
Silesia was built at the turn of the 19th and
20th centuries mainly for the transportation
of high quality Upper Silesian coal to the local
glassworks. The builders on both sides of the
mountains chose different solutions to deal
with the height difference between the valley
and the Novosvětský Pass which the trains
pass through in order to overcome the Giant
Mountain Ridge. On the Polish side, the track

In August 2010, passenger train operations
were renewed on the unique Harrachov – Jakuszyce – Szklarska Poręba mountain track after a break of 65 years. If you visit this area, be
sure to take a train ride to the Polish side of the
Giant Mountains.
The railway line connecting the LiberecJablonec agglomeration with a number of
centres in the Giant Mountains and Upper
is 8 CZK, it costs 3.50 PLN to travel from the
state border to Jakuszyce and then a further
4 PLN to travel to Szklarska Poręba. However,
the tickets issued to the point of Harrachov
- state border are also valid to the Jakuszyce
station and the tickets issued to Jakuszyce –
border (granica państwa) are also valid to the
Harrachov station. Moreover, the LibNet+ and
LibNet5+ network tickets are accepted in the
trains, as are the Czech Railways’ SoNe+ (only
to Jakuszyce) and SoNe+PKP (to Jelenia Góra)
weekend offers.
Further offered discounts and contractual
transport conditions are set out on the carriers’ websites at www.viamont.cz, www.cd.cz
and www.przewozyregionalne.pl (in Polish).

What did glassmakers eat?
Life in the Jizera Mountains was influenced by
a number of factors which differed from those
in agricultural areas. These especially involved
the altitude above sea level, the harsh climatic
conditions and the low fertility of the stony
soil. The conditions in the higher locations
were not suitable for cultivating the land and
the inhabitants therefore fed themselves from
humble cattle breeding or home production.
Later, the fast growing textile and glass industries brought increasing numbers of people
into the Jizera Mountains in search of work
and new houses, whose owners did not have
any land apart from some flower beds or part
of a meadow, were built in the villages in increasing numbers.
Much has been written and published about
life in the Jizera Mountains. But it is only with
some difficulty that we can imagine what the
glassmakers’ life really tasted like. Despite that,
it is tempting to try and place yourself in the
midst of the lives of our forebears.
If your wish to experience the recent past,
while at the same time enjoying the present
with all of the beauty of the contemporary
Jizera Mountains, we can offer you several culinary delights from our great-grandmothers’
cookbooks.

THE AUGUST
Healthy and tasty food or original gifts with
the new Jizera Mountains Regional Product
logo.
A new regional product
logo was established in
October 2010 and producers
from the Jizera Mountains
area have since expressed
great interest in it: this logo
can currently be found on
30 products. The certification is mainly based on local
origin and production, but
brand tradition, the share of
work done by hand, the originality and the environmental friendliness of
the production process are also evaluated. The
symbol does not replace any currently existing
symbols or certification, but it merely makes
consumers aware of the origins of the product

in relation to the
natural,
cultural
and historic values
of the area of the
Jizera Mountains. The certificate can therefore
be found on wooden jewellery and toys, glass
beads and costume jewellery, rings made of
precious metals, ceramics, textile products,
butter and milk products, honey, regional
beer, wine and herbal syrups. Visitors will usually find the products with the Jizera Mountains Regional Product logo directly at the manufacturers’, but some of these products can
also be found in other shops or galleries. The
process of finding these products has been
simplified by means of a catalogue which is
available at the tourist information centres.
The labelling of local production from the area
of the Jizera Mountains has been supported
by the Rural Development Program.
 THE AUGUST FLOODS IN THE LIBEREC REGION
The Liberec Region was hit by
flash floods in the early hours of
the morning on 7. 8. 2010. These
floods were the third most destructive in the Czech Republic
since 1997. The municipalities
within the territories of Frýdlant,
Liberec, Nový Bor and Česká Lípa
were most affected, while Jilemnice, Tanvald and Semily suffered
less damage. In total, the territories of 79 municipalities were
affec ted (36 % of all of the Region’s municipalities), as was an
area of 1,689 km2 (53.4 % of the
Region’s area).
Roads, bridges and footbridges were mostly damaged
in the affected municipalities,
but supplies of gas and electricity were also cut off, cell phone
networks went down and it was
difficult to make contact with
the municipalities. The water
mains and sewer networks were
damaged, as was the electrical
distribution system, including
the transformer stations. Significant damage occurred to the
private property of citizens and
companies, including real estate.
There were landslides, the banks
of watercourses were worn away
and the watercourses themselves
were silted up and the riverbeds
became impassable and a number of hydraulic structures were
damaged, including reservoirs,
fishponds and the vegetation in
their environs. More than 1800
households were affected and
the total damages have exceeded 8 billion CZK. The floods destroyed more than 60 monuments
and tourist attractions: 1.5 million CZK have been earmarked for
the preservation of 13 of them
from the Liberec Region’s grant
program at the Culture, Heritage
and Tourism Department.
During the course of the rescue and disposal work, the police, soldiers and professional fire
brigades and rescue ambulance
crews were assisted by hundreds
of volunteers, humanitarian and
non-profit organisations and
units from the Integrated Rescue
System with technology from the
entire Czech Republic.
The damage to property is extensive and the full renewal of the
territory will be a long-term matter. The Liberec Region has announced the “Liberec Region –
2010 Floods” public appeal, the
aim of which is to secure funds to
assist the areas of the Liberec Region affected by flooding.
It is possible to send financial contributions to this flood
appeal: the account number is:
99111199/0300.

Jewellery Museum presents the town’s history
of glass production which has a tradition
stretching over several hundred years. The
main art nouveau building was built in
1904 by the architect Emilian Herbig and
originally belonged to the export company
of Zimmer & Schmidt. You will find the best
History and the glass tradition
The very oldest records speak of the Jizera Mountains as a region with
dense and, in some places, impenetrable forest growth which was
alternately settled by Czechs and Germans. The first settlers were therefore
mainly charcoal burners and foresters. However, livestock breeding and
linen weaving soon appeared and the first mention of glassmaking dates
from the 14th century. It was precisely that which designated the character
of the entire area and it particularly meant that Jablonec nad Nisou
(known at that time as Gablonz) became internationally renowned. Franz
Kunze, the Wanders, the Schurers, the Preusslers, the Ewalds and especially
the Riedels laid the foundations for the fame of Jizera glassmaking.
Reminders of these beginnings and of the more famous period of the 19th
century can be found in every village in the Jizera Mountains. Large and
small glass pressing plants, including those adjoined to cottages, water
raceways and the representative houses or stately gravestones in the
cemeteries are evidence of the wealth and pride of the glassmakers and
merchants.
Some of the museums from the Jizera Mountains and its environs will
introduce you to the fragile and glittering beauty of glass and costume
jewellery.

12. 2.–19. 2. 2011 The 10th Winter
European Youth Olympic Festival 2011
– EYOWF 2011 [email protected], www.eyowf2011.cz
The European Youth Olympic Festival can be considered to be the continent’s largest
sporting event for young people aged 14 to 18. This significant event is always held in
summer and winter in 2-yearly cycles. The initiator is the Association of European Olympic
Committees. The high prestige of the aforementioned festivals which are considered to
constitute a springboard into the big world of sport is also born out by the fact that they
include official (opening and closing) ceremonies, the Olympic flame is lit throughout their
duration, the athletes and referees take an oath, the state anthems are played during the
medal ceremonies and the flags of all the medallists are raised.
The motto of this year’s EYOWF 2011 in the Liberec Region is: “Rise above the crowd, make
your mark!”. In this spirit, young European sportspeople will compete for 207 medals in eight
classic winter disciplines – ski jumping, Nordic combined, cross-country skiing, Alpine skiing,
snowboarding, biathlon, ice hockey and figure skating. 1500 sportspeople from 49 countries
in Europe are expected to attend and, as the stated figures show, this is the largest sports
event in the history of the Czech Republic.
The festival’s individual disciplines will be hosted by sports facilities in the
Liberec Region:
Alpine disciplines – Liberec, Ještěd; Cross-country skiing – Liberec, Vesec; Ski jumping –
Liberec, Ještěd; Nordic combined – Liberec, Ještěd, Vesec; Ice hockey – Liberec, Tipsport

more easily and to support its services. It is
possible to support the maintenance of the

terrain where the snow lies from October
to late spring and thus provides excellent
conditions for cross-country skiing. The “Bieg
Piastów” race, the oldest and largest Polish
mass skiing race which has been included
in the WORLDLOPPET international longdistance skiing league, is held there. The centre
offers more than 150 km of cross-country
trails of varying degrees of difficulty which
are located in the Jizera Mountains, partially
in the territory of the Szklarska Poręba Forest

the Świeradów-Zdrój Forest Administration.
They are connected to a number of Czech

Jizerky pro Vás
The Jizera Mountains For You public service organisation was established by the Municipality
of Kořenov in 2008 in order to support the development of tourism and care for the landscape
of the Jizera Mountains. The organisation’s activities mainly focus on the following pursuits:
support for the development of tourism services, the development of the Kořenov Information Centre (located in the “Motorest” building and operated by the Jizera Mountains For You
public service organisation) including the administration of the website, the maintenance of
the cycle and cross-country skiing trails in the area of Kořenov and Paseky nad Jizerou with the
aim of supporting the Jizera Mountains and the Giant Mountains, care for the landscape and
the preservation of the cultural and natural heritage in the form of the repair of small-scale
monuments.
These activities also include the sale of typical and traditional regional products from the Jizera Mountains and the Giant Mountains and the publication of an Accommodation Catalogue
for the Kořenov area and for the regions of Paseky nad Jizerou and Szklarska Poręba together
with a hiking map of the region.
In 2011The Jizera Mountains For You public service organisation has plans to reconstruct the
almost defunct Chapel of St. Gothard located under the Sun Chalet (Sluneční chata) in the
cadastral territory of the municipality of Český Šumburk. The reconstruction will take place
with the help of the Micro-Project Fund, Goal 3 the Czech Republic – Poland which has also
supported the organisation’s other plans via the Nisa Euro-Region.
You can find all the necessary information online at www.jizerkyprovas.cz. You can support

DOWNHILL
SKIING
DOWNHILL SKIING
The Jizera Mountains offer many opportunities to lovers of downhill skiing. The slopes in the
local terrain do not have the length or demanding nature of those in the neighbouring Giant
Mountains and as such they are excellent for beginners and medium-advanced skiers. Advanced
skiers can also ski some of the black downhill slopes (on Spičák, and Ještěd and in Harrachov). One
feature of the downhill skiing in the Jizera Mountains involves the existence of a number of small
skiing facilities which are family-friendly and offer favourable prices. You can find the locations of
most of the skiing facilities on the map on the previous pages under the number in the black box.

A new facility aimed predominantly at families
with children is under development on the hill
known as Javorník (684 m above sea level) not
far from the expressway between Prague and Liberec at an altitude of ca 650 m above sea level.
The new luge run was launched into operation in October 2010 and its length of 1,100 m
means that it is the longest luge run in the
Czech Republic.
The modern four-seater chairlift (800 m
long) will be launched into operation in December 2010 given good weather conditions.
It will connect with the blue downhill slope
(900 m long), the snow-park for skiers and
snowboarders and the children’s slope with
a ski tow. The downhill slopes will have the
option of using artificial snow and will also
offer night skiing.
The following ancillary services will also be
available: a skiing school, sports equipment
hire, refreshments and others. It will cater for
lovers of both skiing and adrenaline sports.
The facility is easily accessible either by bus
from Liberec or by car with the option of parking at the facility in a car park with a capacity
of ca 160 parking spaces.
Come and enjoy winter fun at this new recreational sports facility, the peak of which is
part of the Ještěd Nature Park.

Poland
 Świeradów-Zdrój  The history and tradition of the town is
connected with the so-called “holy spring” described by Leonard
Thurneysser and Kaspar Schwenckfeld as being a mineral spring which is
comparable in its quality with the curative waters of the spas in Belgium
or in Hungary. The Świeradów Spa has a 250-year history and its natural
resources enable it to offer curative procedures and wonderful relaxation.
The spa focuses on the treatment of illnesses of the joints and muscles,
rheumatoid, neurological and gynaecological illnesses, circulatory
illnesses, high blood pressure and osteoporosis.
 Czerniawa-Zdrój  The spa activities in this small part of
Świeradow-Zdrój began in the 19th century. By 1973, it had become an
independent spa which was founded in the settlement of Czech religious
refugees established in the 17th century. In 1969, the “Czerniawianka”
curative mineral water began to be bottled. According to research, the
water cleans the body of heavy metals and reduces the sugar levels in
the blood. The use of the natural richness of the mineral water and the
exceptional microclimate has meant that this area has long served in the
treatment of sick children, while later part of the “Świeradów-Czerniawa”
spa also focussed on treating adult patients. A number of schools work in
cooperation with the spa hospital and offer parallel teaching at primary
school and afternoon activities. The Czerniawia-Zdrój spa treats illnesses
of the upper respiratory tract, asthma and inhalatory and pollen allergies.

F. X. Šalda
 F. X. ŠALDA THEATRE IN LIBEREC
page 22
65 years ago, in September 1945, the curtain first rose on a performance of Jirásek’s
tragedy “Gero” at the start of the activities of
the Czech theatre in Liberec.
Since then, many excellent artists who
were involved in creating the image of the
Czech theatre in opera, drama and ballet have
walked the boards of the Liberec stage. Of these, we should at least mention the conductor
Rudolf Vašata, the director Ivan Glanc and the
choreographer František Pokorný.
At present, the F. X. Šalda Theatre has three
companies and two stages (the classical facility of the F. X. Šalda Theatre and the variable
Small Theatre (Malé divadlo)) and as such it
is one of the most significant theatres in the
Czech Republic, whose productions are acknowledged both in domestically (regular no-
minations for the Thalia Awards) and abroad.
The most successful productions of 2009
included the swing musical Sugar set to the
motifs of the famous film Some Like it Hot, the
pair of Italian veristic operas the Farmer Cavalier and the Comedians, the English comedy
the Family is the Basis of the State and the
ballet productions Masquerade, Witch’s Love
and Joking.
