lass volunteers returned to campus on September 15 and 16 for Alumni/ae Council Weekend. In addition to the
usual volunteer planning sessions, the weekend included the dedication of the new Phelps Academy Center (see
the fall 2006 Bulletin for details). The traditional Friday night dinner with the senior class took place with a twist.
Unfinished repairs to the gymnasium floors required the dinner to be held in a tent on the library lawn, a move popular
with alumni/ae and students alike. In addition, a new tradition was added to the event when alumni/ae presented the seniors
at their tables with class pins.

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT
KARIN CHAMBERLAIN ’88
When she was applying to Exeter, Karin
Chamberlain ’88 particularly appreciated the
welcoming and positive energy she encountered
on her visit to campus. Her overnight experience convinced Chamberlain, who would be
graduating on the young
side of 17 from high school
in Hanover, NH, that Exeter
was the right place to
spend an additional year in
high school before heading
to college. At Exeter, she
played soccer, ice hockey
and lacrosse, and she discovered a new level of
Chamberlain
interest in her studies. “I
came from a very good high school but hadn’t
been particularly interested in studying,” she
explains. “At Exeter I encountered a new environment that really fostered wanting to learn.”
Chamberlain had had to sell her parents on
Exeter in first place, so she was committed to
giving it her best shot. “I had been an introvert
who rarely spoke in class,” she says, “but I
found it was easier to speak up at the Harkness
table where everyone was in the front row.”
Several years later, after moving to Boston
for graduate school, Chamberlain found that
reconnecting with Exeter created further opportunities for growth. “I used the Exeter network
for informational interviews and found it very
helpful,” she says, “and I joined the board of
the Exeter Association of New England as a way
to meet people.” From 2002 to 2005, she served
as president of the association, a role that
allowed her to develop valuable organizational
and public speaking skills. She also introduced
an alumni/ae volunteer program at an organic
farm in Concord, MA, which has become a very
popular Exeter event. Serving on the board
allowed her to meet a wide range of interesting
people at Boston events and offered her a new
perspective on how Exeter functions as a
school. “I have been impressed by the level of
thought and care that goes into Exeter projects,” says Chamberlain, “particularly how
Exeter raises funds to both build and endow
new construction on campus, and how the
school pays attention to teachers’ needs.”
Although Chamberlain has stepped down from
her role as president, she says, “I’m looking
forward to staying involved because it’s fun.”
