Parkway OASIS Tutor Update November Meeting: Place: Friday, Jan. 30, 2009 Mt Zion Church 1485 Craig Road Creve Coeur, MO Time: 1 p.m. Barb Clark Coordinator (314) 415-8121 [email protected] Volume 17 Issue 4 January 2009 Special points of interest: ☺ School Cancellation Info. ☺ Condolences ☺ Activity Sheets ☺ Helpful Web sites Books and Lesson Plans Through the generosity of the National OASIS office, we have received numerous copies of the Immigration series books that were introduced last year. This arrival made me think it would be a good idea to bring some of the books from our library — old favorites as well as some of the newer copies, and demonstrate lesson plans and activities that work with them. In addition to the Immigration series, I plan to bring the I Spy series which offers a number of skill building opportunities for students. Please bring or tell us about your favorite book and activity that has been successful for you. Hope to see you there. Inside this issue: Jan. Training dates are the following: January 12 – 10am or 6pm January 26 – 10am or 6pm February 9 – 10am or 6pm February 23 – 10am or 6pm March 9 – 10am or 6pm March 30 – 10am or 6pm The training is about one and a half hours long, and the day at Biz town would be for the better part of a school day. Other districts also attend so if this sounds ideal for you, Junior Achievement would love to have your help. For questions about this fun volunteer opportunity, or to sign up to help, please call or email Jenny Eickhorst at ( 636) 728-0707 ext. 237 or [email protected] Condolences With a sad heart I give you the following news: Gilda Lautar, who was starting her 18th year as an Oasis tutor at Hanna Woods this fall, passed away unexpectedly. She is survived by her husband, Frank, who has been with us for 15 years. Ginny Miller, who has been at Hanna for six years, lost her husband this fall. Diane Combs, who was at our fall training, lost her daughter. Page 2 Activity Topics January February Presidential Inauguration Ground Hog Day Martin Luther King Day President’ s Day Snowy Day Activities Dental Health Month Chinese New Year Valentine ’ s Day Black History Month The above themes for January and February should give you ideas for a starting point for your tutoring sessions. These themes, along with using new words may step up the lesson a notch. Try doing the following during your sessions: ♦ Talk about new words. These might be words you hear, say or see. Explain what they mean. ♦ Look for new words. Open the dictionary and find an unfamiliar word. Define it and use it during your session. ♦ Play with new words. Introduce a word. Then give three possible meanings. Let your student guess which one is right. ♦ Use new words. Try out the new words in sentences full of familiar words. This makes them easier to understand. Helpful Web sites The following Web sites may be of help if you like to surf the net for ideas and activities to use with your student. An important point to remember when searching the Internet for various puzzles is to include the words free and printable ( i.e. free printable word search, free printable crosswords, etc. ) You may also want to include the word child or children's to your search.
