Beloved Ones,
Does God really care? Is God real?
There are very few confirmed atheists around, but there are a lot
more practical atheists. Confirmed atheists are those who believe
that there is no God, no providence, no hope beyond this life.
Practical atheists are those who say they believe in God, but do not
live like it. Are you and I guilty of being practical atheists?
I confess that there are times when I do not live like I believe in
God. There are times when I am not compassionate, generous,
forgiving, accepting, fair, or any of the other qualities that are
found in those who believe, truly believe, in God. I go about my
business thinking that I can handle it all and forgetting to say thank
you to the One who gave me my life in the first place. I do not do
what Jesus would do. I do not walk where Jesus would walk. At
these times in my life, my intellectual beliefs about God do not
matter much. As far as the world sees, I do not believe in God.
Thankfully, even in these moments of practical unbelief, I, and
we, have the assurance that God still believes in us. God wants the
best for us, and nothing we do or say can stand in the way of
God’s forgiving love. May we respond to God’s belief in us with
gratitude and humility, and may we show our belief in God with
acts of genuine compassion and justice.
People of God, do we really, truly, believe in God? Do we show
our belief in God by our regular prayers, our study of Scripture,
our frequent presence in worship, our generous gifts, our
compassionate witness, and our abundant service to each other
and to all who are in need? These are some of the ways in which
we declare to the world that we do, truly, believe.
I believe in you. I believe that each of you is a child of God, loved
by God, forgiven by God, saved by God, and sent by God. I am
grateful to be able to serve with you. In addition – I believe in
God! I pray that I might live my life so that you will be able to tell.
Love in Christ,
Pastor Mark Smiley

“Landscape Ladies”
In an effort to maintain continuity and design, I
have been asked to coordinate landscape duties
in the gardens surrounding our church and
office buildings. Keeping the gardens looking
good is not difficult but it’s a very important
task. Since last Fall mulching, weeding,
pruning and planting have been done by some
very quiet, dedicated ladies. Kristy
Vandervalk, Sally Stair and Lily Clendaniel
have all had a part in the maintenance of the
garden beds. In addition, this Spring the
Scouts, who meet in our church, planted
colorful annuals to brighten the beds along the
street.
If you are interested in helping with the garden
beds, please let me or Frank Potee know. My
phone number is 410-365-2612 and email is
[email protected].
If you plan to attend the Thursday evening
drumming meditation, please RSVP by 12 noon on
Thursday to Cathy Flinn (410-596-3022). If we
receive no RSVP’s for attendance, the meditation
will be cancelled. If you have invited a friend who is
not a member of our church, please let Cathy know
that so she can be sure to be there for them!
Again – thanks Kristy, Sally and Lily!!

OPERATION Christmas Child Shoeboxes
National Collection Week
Philippines
Super Typhoon Haiyan pummeled the Philippines for
hours with its relentless 195-mile-per-hour winds and
driving rain. Waves nearly 20 feet high crashed over the
coastline, leaving 4 million people homeless.
Nine-year-old Amy Faith Raayco, who lives on
Bantayan Island, remembers hiding under a bed
and clutching her mother, brothers, and sisters
when Haiyan hit. Windows shattered, their roof
peeled off, and eventually the walls buckled in
around them. “I was so scared,” Amy said. “All I
could do was close my eyes.”
November 17-24
Ecuador
Jose’ was only 4 years old when his father abandoned
him and his mother in Quito, Ecuador. Hurt and confused,
Jose’ grew into an angry and rebellious teenager, always
arguing with his mother.
One day, a friend invited Jose’ to join him at church for an
Operation Christmas Child shoebox distribution. Jose’
laughed at the idea at first, but his friend insisted, so Jose’
tagged along.
Amy and her family lost everything that night.
Even the simple Christmas decorations they owned
were washed away.
Jose’ received more than a shoebox at the church. He
heard the Gospel and learned that he had a heavenly
Father who loved him. He also prayed for forgiveness and
received Jesus into his heart.
Amy’s mother and father used their entire life
savings to rebuild a one-room house on the old
foundation. The children were told not to expect
any presents at Christmas.
The next week, Jose’ and a group of boys and girls
returned to the church to begin The Greatest Journey, a
12-lesson discipleship program for children, created by
Operation Christmas Child.
Hope was renewed when Amy was invited to
receive an Operation Christmas Child gift box at
Bethel Christian Leadership Center. After sending
two cargo planes to the Philippines loaded with
relief supplies, Samaritan’s Purse chartered a third
747 to airlift 65,000 shoebox gifts for children in
churches across the devastated islands of Leyte,
Bantayan, and surrounding communities.
Jose’ grew in his faith as he followed The Greatest
Journey and couldn’t wait to receive a New Testament
and a certificate at the graduation ceremony.
Jose’ was happy that his mother, who was not a Christian,
came to the graduation, but he was ashamed at the way
he had treated her. “I decided to change my attitude so
she would know Jesus, too,” he said. “I asked her for
forgiveness and we cried together.”
Amy beamed with excitement when she was
handed her shoebox. The crayons and scarf she
received served as a comforting reminder that God
loved her and never forgot her, even after
Typhoon Haiyan washed away her home.
Then another miracle happened. “The most special thing
was that my mother decided to accept Jesus in her heart,
too!” he said. “Now we go to church together and I know
that even though my father abandoned us, God will never
do the same.”
“I’m so happy to get this shoebox and to use all the
things in it,” Amy said. “Even this scarf I can use to
shade myself since all the trees are gone.”
These are some of the Spiritual Impact stories that have taken place around the world
because of the shoebox gifts that have been distributed.
God is working in and through this ministry in a powerful way!

N
ovember 17-24, 2014, is National Collection
Week for the Operation Christmas Child Shoeboxes.
This is a project of Samaritan’s Purse with Franklin Graham as the President.
Large baskets are currently located in the Mission Hallway to collect items to
be included in the shoeboxes. Operation Christmas Child colorful gift boxes
that are ready for packing will be distributed to the congregation to be filled
and returned to the church. These gift boxes may be used as well as
shoeboxes wrapped with colorful Christmas paper (lid wrapped separately).
You may use some of the items from the baskets or do your own shopping.
Why not have family time together when you will shop and pack your
shoebox?!
In addition, on Sunday, November 9, after the second church service come
and join with other church members for an OCC Shoebox Packing Party.
Items collected in the baskets will be packed in the gift boxes provided. A light lunch (drinks, soup, cheese and crackers)
will also be provided.
At the end of National Collection Week the filled shoeboxes will be delivered to a local collection center. The boxes will
then be transported to one of the nine Processing Centers. One of the new Processing Centers is in the Washington/
Baltimore area. There, volunteers from all over the nation come to serve on an assembly line sorting through shoeboxes
filled with school supplies, toys and personal items. Every single gift that is collected must be carefully inspected and
prepared for overseas shipment during November and December. The packages are sent all over the globe to children
in need by ship, airplane, helicopter, and pack mules.
Since 1993, Samaritan’s Purse has been bringing the joy of Christmas and the Good News of Jesus Christ by
distributing shoebox gifts to more than 113 million children in over 140 nations. Last year nearly 10 million shoeboxes
filled with love and simple gifts brought joy to boys and girls around the world.
More than 1.1 million children in nearly 100 nations have made decisions for Christ after participating in the evangelism
and discipleship program of Operation Christmas Child. Millions more can come to know Jesus and grow in their faith
(like Jose’) through The Greatest Journey, 12-lesson Bible study.
You, too, can make a difference in a young person's life by sharing the Good News of God's love - pack a shoebox. As
you pack your shoebox pray for the boy or girl who will receive it.
HOW TO PACK A SHOEBOX FOR A TRIP AROUND THE WORLD
1. Use an empty cardboard or plastic shoebox (average size). If you use plastic containers, they can become treasured
household items and can be used for holding food and clean water among many other daily uses.
You may wrap the box and (wrap lid separately), but wrapping is not required.
2. Determine whether your gift will be for a boy or a girl, and the child's age category: 2-4, 5-9 or
10-14. Pick up labels at church and mark the correct age category on the label, and tape the label
to the top of the box.
3. Fill the box with a variety of gifts that will bring delight to a child. (See Below.)
4. Please include $7.00 per box donation to cover international shipping and related costs. This will help speed the
shoebox gifts on their journey around the world and into the hands of children in need. You can write a check to
Samaritan's Purse (note "OCC" on memo line) and place it in an envelope on top of the gift items inside your box. If
you or your family members are preparing more than one shoebox, please make one combined donation.
OR
Make your donation online (go to www.samaritanspurse.org) by using a credit or debit card and discover the country
destination of your shoebox. You will receive an email of a special Follow-Your-Box label to print and use. The
barcode on the label will enable OCC to track each shoebox. Later, you will receive a notification about the
destination of your shoebox gift.
5. Pray. Ask God to use your gifts to show His love to the child who will receive your shoebox.
6. Place a rubber band around each closed shoebox and drop off at church.

“Charity fashion show in Westminster proves both fun and helpful”
by Wiley Hayes, Times Staff Writer
“It was fun,” Isaac [Jones] said.
The importance of the event was not lost on him, he said. The fashion
show, dubbed Clothed [with] Compassion, was a joint effort between
Westminster United Methodist Church, The Boys and Girls Clubs of
Westminster, and Boscov’s to benefit the Back to School program run by
The Shepherd’s Staff.
This was the seventh annual Clothed with Compassion fashion show and
it was, by far, the biggest turnout for the event. [Karen] Rau said. (T)he
show at Boscov’s had close to 100 in attendance.

Preschool Happenings
The children are settling nicely into their school routine. We have approximately 40
families enrolled but are hoping to admit a few more students to help us make our
yearly budget. We still have openings in our 2, 3, and 4-year-old classes and will
accept students until capacity. Please spread the word that Crossroads Christian
Preschool is a highly qualified half day Christian Preschool that recognizes children
are uniquely created and gifts from God. Interested families can learn more by
accessing our church website (Ministries, Crossroads) and our Preschool facebook
page.
Activities in October will center around welcoming the season Fall and Fire Prevention
Week. The four-year-olds will be visiting Bear Branch Nature Center, the three-yearolds will be visiting Pleasant Valley Fire Company, and the two-year-olds will be visiting
Gavers Farm. You may even see some firefighters and a fire truck in our parking lot!
Scholarships and Donations
Your recent material donations have been greatly appreciated and it is never too late
to drop off much needed supplies. Contributions to our scholarship fund have allowed
us to offer three children partial scholarships for this school year but we would like
to build up that fund for additional needy families. Monetary donations are always
appreciated and if you would like to make a donation, please make your check payable

Please pray for our school this year as we have implemented a new curriculum, new
schedules and temporary staff changes. It certainly takes a village to educate just
one child and with your prayers and support may we serve all of God’s children here at
Crossroads.
