A MESSAGE FROM
BROOKLYN BOROUGH PRESIDENT
ERIC L. ADAMS
WELCOME TO THE 33RD ANNUAL MARTIN
LUTHER KING JR. CONCERT SERIES!
F
or the last year and a half, I have had the ultimate honor: serving Brooklynites
from Greenpoint to Gravesend, from Clinton Hill to Canarsie, as your Borough
President. Once again, I have the distinct pleasure of hosting a summer of concerts here at Wingate Field, an expression of my passion for the arts as well as of my
commitment to uniting our borough in a spirit of celebration.
Music is a vehicle for celebrating the many cultures and customs that call this borough home. Where else but Brooklyn are you a short subway ride away from the
sounds of soca music in East Flatbush, the melodies of mariachi in Sunset Park, and
the chords of klezmer in Williamsburg?
Galileo got it wrong: Brooklyn is THE center of the universe. We are the epitome of
cool and hip, the place where any dream can come true. Through all of the great
development we have seen, our borough still maintains the beauty of its brownstones and the charm of our communities. Summertime is when our borough can
boast the most, with some of the city’s most picturesque parks, beautiful beaches,
and extraordinary entertainment. Of course, there’s something for everyone all yearround, from our “foodie” scene and vibrant nightlife to our unparalleled cultural institutions and world-class professional sports franchises; this fall, the Islanders will
join our beloved Cyclones and Nets! Brooklyn has become an in-demand brand,
sending local products across the country and even the globe.
What truly makes Brooklyn an in-demand brand, from Manhattan to Marrakech, is
our people. My focus at Brooklyn Borough Hall is on ensuring everyone of this borough enjoys our shared success. We are building and empowering our neighbors
with the tools they need to raise healthy children and families, and I hope you will
visit Brooklyn-usa.org to learn more about how you can get involved in these efforts.
I look forward to all the incredible things we will achieve together. Brooklyn
Borough Hall is always open to you, be it to host an event, to solve a community concern, or to propose a way to advance our borough.
Thank you, and let’s keep moving forward as One Brooklyn.

HORACE SILVER
ver the past fifty years, Horace has written
some of the most enduring jazz music,
playing the piano with a distinctive, personal style. He has been described as one of the
most influential musicians in the history of jazz.
He was born in Norwalk, Connecticut on
September 2, 1928. His father was an immigrant
from Cape Verde -- and that island nation’s AfroPortuguese influences would play a major part in
his own music, later on.
As a teenager, he began playing both the piano
and saxophone, absorbing everything from boogie-woogie and blues, to the artistry of jazz greats
such as Bud Powell and Thelonious Monk. His
piano trio was working in Hartford, Connecticut in
1950, when the group garnered the attention of
saxophonist Stan Getz. The famed saxophonist
brought the band on the road with him, and
recorded three of Silver’s compositions.
In 1951, he moved to New York City where he
accompanied saxophonists Coleman Hawkins,
Lester Young, and Lou Donaldson, on the piano.
The following year, he met the executives at Blue
Note Records while working as a sideman for
Donaldson. This meeting led to Silver signing with
the label, where he would remain until 1980. He
also collaborated with Art Blakey in forming the
Jazz Messengers during the early 1950’s.
During his Blue Note years (1952-1980), he
helped create the rhythmically forceful branch of
jazz known as “hard bop”.
He imbued much of his compositions with blues
and gospel progressions – with those influences
on prominent display in “The Preacher”, one of his
biggest hits.
Along with his own work, his band often showcased rising jazz stars such as saxophonists
Junior Cook and Hank Mobley, trumpeter Blue
Mitchell, and drummer Louis Hayes.
Some of his key albums from this period include
“Horace Silver Trio” (1953), “Horace Silver and the
Jazz Messengers” (1955), “Six Pieces of Silver”
O
(1956) and “Blowin’ The Blues Away” (1959),
which includes the popular cut, “Sister Sadie”. He
also combined jazz with a sassy take on pop in his
1961 hit, “Filthy McNasty”.
But it was a few years later that he would
record one of his most famous songs, the title
track to his 1964 album, “Song For My Father”.
That piece combined his dad’s take on Cape
Verdean folk music (with a hint of Brazilian
Carnival rhythms) into an enduring F-minor jazz
composition. Over the years, it has become an
American musical standard, covered by scores of
instrumentalists and well-known singers, including the inimitable James Brown.
As social and cultural upheavals shook the
nation during the late 1960s and early 1970s, he
responded to these changes through his music.
He commented directly on the new scene, with a
trio of records titled “United States of Mind”, that
featured the spirited vocals of Andy Bey. As a
composer he delved deeper into cosmic philosophy with his group, Silver ‘N Strings, recording
“Silver ‘N Strings Play The Music of the Spheres”.
After Silver’s long tenure with Blue Note ended,
his musical creativity found inspiration in new and
vital ways. In the 1980s his hard work and tenacity
propelled him to start his own record label,
Emerald Records and created a production company, Silveto Productions. They served as a conduit to channel, musically, his on-going metaphysical expressions.
And in the late 1990s, he re-visited the hard bop
sound he helped create, giving fresh relevance to
a classic groove.
He has received wide recognition as a venerable jazz icon, and is considered one of the most
influential musicians of the genre. In 2005, the
National Academy of Recording Arts and
Sciences (NARAS) gave him its President’s Merit
Award. In 2006 he authored his life story “Let’s Get
To The Nitty Gritty” (University of California Press).
Horace made his transition on June 18, 2014.

MORRIS DAY AND THE TIME
Born in Minneapolis, Morris Day had a flair for fashion. Inspired by photographs of his
grandpa in zoot suits, a true fashionista was formed! Day went to school with Prince
Rogers Nelson and sang in Prince's first band, Grand Central.
Prince grew as an artist, and so did the opportunity around him. The Time was originally created as Prince's alter ego, to be seen as the cool, streetwise funk band contrasting Prince's more soulful R&B sound. After looking at several lead vocalists, Prince
wanted someone with mad talent, so he cast his high school friend the funky, fabulous
Morris Day. Soon after, Morris Day and the Time were cast in Purple Rain, which captured the exploding Minneapolis music scene at its peak.
Morris Day burst onto the public scene with the group’s self titled album, The Time,
which included “Get It Up,” “Cool,” and “Girl.” Soon after the world was introduced the
prolific Minneapolis music marvel, the group went on to record three more albums,
including What Time Is It? (featuring the hits “777-9311,” “Wild and Loose,” “Walk,” and
“Gigolos Get Lonely Too”) and Ice Cream Castle, which included the hit “Jungle Love.”
After three albums, Morris Day launched his solo career, releasing three albums: The
Color of Success, Daydreaming, and Guaranteed. Combined sales of Morris Day’s solo
work and The Time exceed 10 million units.

VP RECORDS PRESENTS REGGAE NIGHT
FREDDIE MCGREGOR
Of the legendary, first-generation reggae pioneers that remain with us, very few have a résumé
as deep or a career as celebrated as that of Freddie McGregor—a man who has not only been
a part of reggae music through every stage of its development, but has also helped to shape it
at virtually every stage. Few reggae singers have both the vocal technique and a natural instrument to compare with those of Freddie McGregor. Equally adept as a romantic crooner and a
powerful deliverer of strong cultural messages, he has a voice unlike any other, one that he
forged from influences both Jamaican and American, in particular the sounds of Philly-style
soul. Freddie is a deep and multifaceted talent with roots extending back to the earliest days of
this music, but he is dedicated to moving it into the future with hope and positivity.

DOUG E. FRESH
Doug E. Fresh is an American rapper, record producer, and beatboxer. One of the earliest beatboxers, and still seen as one of the best, Fresh is able to imitate drum machines
and various special effects with often startling accuracy. Fresh’s breakthrough was
1984’s “Beat Street” behind the Treacherous Three. That same year saw Fresh’s debut
as a solo artist with the singles “Just Having Fun” and “Original Human Beatbox.”
Fresh became a major rap star in 1985. His single “The Show/La Di Da Di,” is an early hip
hop classic. The “Get Fresh Crew” was featured: DJs Barry B., Chill Will, and MC Ricky
D (who would later achieve fame as Slick Rick).
KURTIS BLOW
Kurtis Blow, one of the founders and creators of recorded
rap, stands as an emerging leader in a generation of rappers
with street sense, social criticism, and commercial savvy. A
timeless artist, he has been instrumental in raising up a generation of MC’s. In 1979, at the age of 20, Kurtis Blow became
the first rapper to be signed by a major label. Mercury
released “Christmas Rappin',” which sold over 400,000 copies. Its gold follow-up “The
Breaks” helped ignite a still-spreading international “Rap Attack.” He released ten albums
over 11 years; the first, entitled Kurtis Blow, was his full-length debut, and his second,
Deuce, was a Top 50 Pop Album. Party Time featured a pioneering fusion of rap and go-go;
Ego Trip included the hits “8 Million Stories,” “AJ,” and “Basketball.” 1985's America featured the song “If I Ruled the World” which became a top 5 hit on Billboard’s R&B chart.
SPECIAL ED

best known for the songs “I Got It Made,” “Think About It”
and “I'm The Magnificent,” released in 1989 on the Youngest
in Charge album, recorded when Ed was 16 years old. The
album sold more than half a million copies. In 1990, he
released his album Legal, with the singles “Come On Let's Move It" and “The Mission,” followed by the albums Revelations in 1995, and Still Got It Made in 2004.
