TAKING ELECTRIC-POWERED EQUIPMENT TO
The Next Level
Power Up…
Today, owning a business in the waste-reduction industry is all about saving money and recognizing good
opportunities. At Morbark, we know a thing or two about recognizing and acting upon opportunities – as
markets and industries that we’ve served for more than 50 years radically changed before our eyes. Electric
machines can save money and offer new opportunities for your company.
1
… And Save
›› Save the Planet:
Electric Eliminates Diesel Emissions
Save Costs: Electric Runs for Less
Cut Energy Costs in Half
Our customers have come to depend on Morbark® to
be at the forefront of change, to recognize new opportunities, and to design – or redesign – the innovative
equipment that turns those opportunities into reality.
We all understand that the price of diesel fuel and
electricity fluctuates and varies by region. But, generally
speaking, our electric-powered equipment runs for half
the energy costs.
We know one size does not fit all. There isn’t one
solution. That’s why we offer virtually all of our products
with either diesel- or electric-powered motors: Morbark®
Phil Harless, territory manager for PAPÉ Machinery,
a Morbark dealership in California, explains a rough
calculation of savings:
whole tree and brush chippers, tub and Wood Hog
horizontal grinders, flails, Chiparvestor® models,
debarkers, peelers and more.
Electric Leaves a Smaller Footprint
Our electric-powered equipment eliminates diesel
emissions – such as nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide,
hydrocarbons, and particulate matter – immediately
shrinking its carbon footprint.
“As a rule of thumb, we see about ‘$8 per 100 HP per
hour for electricity. If you have a 1,000-HP machine, you
would use approximately $80 per hour for electricity.
With diesel at $4 per gallon, that machine can burn up
to 50 gallons per hour – or $200 per hour for diesel."
That kind of savings in operations adds up – fast. If your
application can be stationary, it pays to consider electric.
Less Maintenance, Less Downtime
This can mean a lot in California and municipalities that
have stricter emission regulations. By using electricpowered equipment when possible, you can improve
the average emissions of your fleet and offset the growth
you may want in other areas – like the use of additional
diesel-fueled loaders and trucks.
Maintaining an electric motor is a dream – with no oil
and filter changes, no engine tune-ups, and no coolant
demands. That lowers the cost – in materials, crew time,
and maintenance downtime. And in the longer term,
our electric-powered equipment doesn’t have the
pistons and diesel engine parts that can wear over time.
Whether you’re doing business in an area with strict
pollution/emissions laws or not, electric equipment
can help reduce smog and greenhouse gases – for
cleaner air.
Peak Performance
Less Ear Pollution
There’s no doubt about it: electric-powered engines are
quiet. Customers report that our electric machines are
often quieter than the trucks and equipment feeding
them. That’s good news for your crew and music to the
neighbors’ ears.
All of that doesn’t mean anything if you have to give
an inch on performance. With Morbark, you don’t
have to. When looking at equivalent diesel and electric
machines, the product output is often a one-to-one
comparison or better.

Electric Pioneers
1960s: Morbark starts building
electric-powered sawmill systems.
1965: Our first electric-powered,
stationary wood chippers are produced.
1950s: Norval Morey invents his portable
tree debarker and founds Morbark® in 1957.
Late 1950s: Morbark builds the first
electric-powered debarkers.
1970s: Dutch elm disease helps create
a market for a mobile wood chipper.
In answer, the Morbark® Chiparvestor®
is named as product of the year.
1986: Morbark supports the recycling
market for stumps and green waste with
the Morbark® waste recycler.
3
1990s: We introduced the first industrial
tub grinders for wood waste recycling and
land-clearing operations in 1990 – and
the electric version in 1995. The Morbark®
Wood Hog horizontal grinder came out in
1994, with the electric version released
before the end of that decade.
Electric Pioneers
For more than 50 years
›› It’s no secret that we know our way “around the forest.”
Norval Morey, our founder, had a connection with the
earth and a fascination with using Mother Nature’s
resources wisely. He invented and patented his
revolutionary tree debarker and formed Morbark®
in the late 1950s.
We cut our electric-conversion “teeth” in the
sawmill industry in the 1960s, developing
systems that would lead many sawmill operators
to permanently switch from steam power to
electricity in their mills.
Today: Electric takes it to the next level,
powering operations to grind industrial
food waste for a biosolids composter.
Decades later, we have not stopped innovating.
We continue to invent new and better ways to
use natural resources. But we don’t stop there.
We work with our customers to find new ways to use
electric power to meet their changing needs.
If you are considering electric, our hard hats are off to
you. We can help you evaluate the benefits and possible
roadblocks. When you’re thinking of taking things to
the next level, it’s good to take along someone with
experience. That’s Morbark.

for customers with diverse needs and applications.
We help them harness the power of electric-driven
equipment to reduce emissions, noise, maintenance,
and operating costs.
primary goals are landfill diversion
›› “Our
and environmental compliance,” says
Kevin Barnes, solid waste director,
Bakersfield DPW. His team was
surprised at the efficiency and the low
operating costs. “That we had to
reevaluate our operating costs
downward because of the grinder
efficiency is a nice testimony to
Morbark and its focus on what’s
important for its customers.”

Reduced Pollution and Energy Costs
Dept. of Public Works (DPW), Bakersfield, CA
California’s Central Valley has some of the state’s poorest air
quality. With strict emission-compliance programs in place,
the DPW faced a challenge. The workload at its wood and
green waste operation was tripling every five years. But more
or bigger grinders would mean bigger diesel emissions, which
would head in the wrong direction.
The DPW switched from two diesel Morbark® tub grinders
to a pair of larger, electric-powered Morbark® Model 7600
Wood Hogs. The 1,000-HP horizontal grinders process more
than 210,000 tons of wood and green waste annually to send
to area cogeneration plants and a biosolids composter.
Less Noise and Cleaner Air
Make for Good Neighbors
South Tahoe Refuse and Recycling Company,
South Lake Tahoe, CA
Consistency, Power, Safety, Savings
TiFuel, Greeneville, TN
TC Taylor’s company had been reliant on grinding contractors
for approximately three decades. TiFuel takes old railroad
ties, sells the best for landscaping, and grinds the rest as
biomass boiler fuel.
After careful evaluation and consultation with his Morbark
field sales specialist, Taylor selected an electric-powered
Morbark® 4600XL Wood Hog to bring TiFuel’s grinding
in-house.
“After running the numbers, we saw we could realize some
really nice savings, not just in fuel but also in maintenance
and upkeep costs with the electric machine,” says Taylor.
“We also liked that we could avoid the risk of combining
creosote-soaked ties, a hot grinder, and diesel fuel. Finally,
when you consider that there are no diesel emissions from
this machine and it runs quieter than the machines feeding
it, going electric just made so much sense.”
Today, TiFuel collects more than 1.3 million used ties per year
– about half of everything that the Norfolk Southern railroads
generate. Using the Morbark® 4600XL has been so successful,
Taylor plans to increase the volume at his first site – and
possibly expand to a second.
In South Lake Tahoe, this waste and recycling company
is located at the edge of town, near other commercial
operations and residential neighborhoods. While planning
its green waste facility, the company was primarily concerned
about diesel fumes inside the building where people would
be working.
“We also have very strict emissions regulations – not just
California’s but also in South Lake Tahoe. So it was very
important for us to look at the electric version of the grinder,”
says John Marchini, operations manager. With close
proximity to neighbors, he also wanted to keep the noise
to a minimum.
After touring another facility and seeing the Morbark®
Wood Hog horizontal grinder in action, South Tahoe Refuse
found the right machine. Since
April 2010, the company has
been running wood, branches,
pine needles, and construction
materials through the Wood Hog.
››
“We are extremely satisfied
with the machine,” says
Marchini. “We absolutely
love our Morbark machine.
It’s been amazingly reliable.
It processes all of the
material we need to
process on a daily basis,
6
without fail.”

›› “We have owned nearly 20 Morbark
machines over the years, and they have
always given us excellent value. Our new
electric-powered Morbark® Model 30
Chiparvestor® is saving us enough money in
fuel to essentially pay for the machine, and
it’s making great chips all day every day.”

Is Electric Right
For You?
Electric-powered equipment
from Morbark can help you
meet these goals:
§§Reduced emissions
§§Reduced noise levels
§§Similar performance and output to diesel
§§Reduced fuel costs
§§Lower operational costs
(less maintenance and downtime)
Testing, Training, and Safety
Advanced Electrical Test Area
From a logistics point of view,
you need to start with two
basic questions:
1.Can the desired piece of equipment be installed
in a stationary location?
2.Is there adequate electric power – or can you
bring it to the location?
Bringing power to your location and getting any
necessary permitting can be a lengthy process with
significant cost. However, this is a one-time cost
that can be recouped with the operational savings.
We can help you evaluate your specific situation.
At our factory in Michigan, Morbark has new, world-class
testing capabilities to reduce the setup time at your location.
Our massive electrical machine test panel allows us to take
each piece of electric-powered equipment we manufacture,
test run it at full RPM, and do the necessary pressure checks.
This allows us to verify the settings through results – not
just inspections. And the full-speed running lets us do a
comprehensive test of all systems on the equipment.
Onsite Follow-Through
Because we’ve already tested the machine at the factory,
our customers can essentially flip the switch on location
and go. On delivery day, a Morbark dealer or representative
is onsite to ensure the equipment is running perfectly. With
our electric-powered equipment, one of our electrical experts
can be there to help advise your electrical contractor on the
final installation.
Training
In addition, Morbark and our dealers won’t let our customers
start up and operate a machine until we have trained the
workers on the safety, operation, and maintenance of
the machine.
From testing to onsite support, we take every step out of the
gate to set our customers up for success.

ELECTRIC ›› The Next Level
In 1957, Norval Morey, a local sawmill operator, took the first risky
step into manufacturing – armed with a patent for a portable pulp
wood debarker. The Morbark® Debarker Company was born, and
nobody in Winn, Michigan, could have predicted the growth that
the company would experience over the next five decades and
beyond. From a simple blacksmith shop to a 1.1-million-square-foot
manufacturing complex. From two workers to nearly 500
employees. From one product to hundreds of heavy equipment
designs. These are some of the important milestones in Morbark’s
remarkable history.
With more than 50 years of ideas, invention, and phenomenal
growth, Morbark is recognized as a world-class manufacturing
company with worldwide markets and a reputation for designing
and building robust, rugged, and reliable heavy equipment.
Over the decades, we’ve moved to the next level again and again.
We’d like to help you expand and move forward at the right pace
for your business. No matter what your size is today – or where you
want to be in the future – Morbark can be your partner and source
for unmatched equipment, industry experience, and guidance.
