Convention is a time to come together and renew past acquaintances and make new ones. Perhaps, nowhere else is the cooperative spirit and nature of credit unions more evident than at our Annual Meeting and Convention. leadership, and the role it plays in developing future leaders. Jackson Hataway, Ph.D, and a consultant with Strategic Arts & Sciences, will challenge attendees in his presentation, Go Big or Go Home: Bringing Up Next Generation Leadership. After the day’s festivities and sessions, attendees will be treated to an evening of recognition with the Annual Awards Banquet, which will honor a select group of individuals for their contributions to credit unions and the Maine Credit Union System. We will again be offering video-taped presentations of each Award recipient and posting those presentations on the League’s website for future viewers. Entertainment from Real Diamond, a nationallyrecognized tribute band dedicated to recreating the sound of Neil Diamond, puts the finishing touches on a busy first day of the 2015 Convention. After a night’s sleep, Convention-goers get together as a ‘team’ once again for a Closing Session that has plenty of ‘game’. Former NBA All-Star, Mark Eaton, will deliver remarks that encompass all three facets of this year’s theme, having a vision, showing leadership, and finding success. At 7’4”, Eaton’s speech, The Four Commitments of a Winning Team, will take the audience on a journey of how a 21 year-old mechanic who couldn’t play basketball, ended up having a 12year NBA career, and found success after his playing days as a business leader and entrepreneur. This year we look ahead to a positive future, securing strengths, and new opportunities to promote the growth of Maine’s Credit Unions, which is evident with the theme: Envision. Lead. Succeed. This year’s theme reinforces how far Maine’s Credit Unions have come since the humble beginnings of the credit union movement started in Maine back in 1921. Through the support of our members and communities, credit unions have become the clear favorite among financial institutions for Maine consumers, according to the Portland Research Group’s 2014 report on consumer financial behavior. Through unique marketing, community outreach, and incredible credit union staff, the future of credit unions will be strong, safe, and secure. We begin our Convention festivities with our Annual Maine Credit Union League Convention Golf Tournament for Ending Hunger, with another sold-out field of 144 golfers, at the Belgrade Lakes Golf Club on Thursday, May 14, followed by the always popular and lively silent auction on Friday night, May 15. The combined efforts of the Golf Tournament and Silent Auction will hopefully be another significant component in leading the way to a successful 2015 Ending Hunger Campaign. The Maine Credit Union League extends its sincere thanks and appreciation to you for not only taking part in your League’s 2015 Convention & Annual Meeting, but also for your continued efforts to grow the Maine Credit Union Movement while providing outstanding service to the over 651,000 Maine credit union members throughout the state. We would also like to acknowledge our major contributors for their support, including Synergent, CUNA Mutual Group, and FISERV EFT, as well as the many other supporters, exhibitors and advertisers who help to support the Convention. The 77th Annual Convention is jam-packed with new ideas and uplifting messages that you will be able to bring back to your credit union. There are three main speakers in addition to a handful of breakout sessions plus a full evening of entertainment to follow the Annual Award Ceremony and silent auctions for Ending Hunger and CULAC. The Opening Session on Friday, May 15, features Scott Burrows, former topranked kick boxing champion and college football player under legendary coach Bobby Bowden, who was paralyzed in a car accident. His speech, entitled Vision, Mindset, Grit, discusses overcoming adversity with determination and passion, and is sure to inspire the audience. The Annual Meeting highlights Maine Credit Union League Though the time at Convention goes all too quickly, the friendships, information and discussion that takes place lasts long after it closes. We envision another powerful year of ideas that will lead to new and innovative products, services and programs that can help the League and Maine’s credit unions reach new success in the future. 3 77th Annual Meeting & Convention Chairman & President’s Report Welcome to the 77 th Annual Meeting of the Maine Credit Union League. It is with great pleasure that we welcome you to the 77th Annual Meeting of the Maine Credit Union League. Against a backdrop of growth and popularity, there has never been a better time to be affiliated with not-for-profit financial cooperatives than right now. Maine’s credit unions, through the support of the Maine Credit Union League, create financial opportunity and are consumers’ best financial partner. As we celebrate another year of collaboration and cooperation, we must recognize that, while the foundation that was laid 77 years ago between Maine’s credit unions through membership in the Maine Credit Union League remains strong, a rock-solid future demands constant work, care and planning in order to maintain and solidify it. JAMES LEMIEUX Cha i rman Our Convention theme, “Maine’s Credit Unions – Envision. Lead. Succeed,” contains three words that appropriately describe the framework and evolution that have enabled our partnership to stay true to our past, embrace the present, and embark on the future. Year-end stats for 2014 reflect how a consistent and steady vision combined with innovative leadership can lead to success, with record-setting numbers in all measurement categories, further supporting the popularity of Maine’s credit unions and the satisfaction of members. During the past year, the combined assets of Maine’s credit unions grew by a solid 4.7% to end the year at $6.4 billion. Despite a reduction in mortgage refinancing that fueled a significant portion of the loan growth in 2013, loan growth remained impressive for the year at 6.3%, an increase of more than $260 million. Share/savings growth at Maine credit unions continued to grow at a steady clip of 4% for the year, representing an increase over nearly $210 million in savings balances to $5.45 billion at year-end. Without growth in membership or member usage, it would be difficult to not only envision growth but it would greatly hinder our ability to lead and build on that success. Over the past six years, Maine’s credit unions have added over 50,000 new members. In the past twelve months, membership grew by 14,026 members or 2.2%, and year-end membership at Maine credit unions surged to an all-time high and now stands at just over 651,400 members. JOHN MURPHY Presi d en t/ C EO Part of being successful in financial services is taking an active role in the political process, and having the vision and strength to stand up and have a voice. Because of our level of participation and involvement, we are respected advocates in both Augusta and in Washington, D.C. Thanks to the strong leadership and understanding by our member credit unions on the importance of developing and maintaining an active role in legislative activities, we are able to maintain a strong presence in our legislative events and activities at the state and federal level. In 2014, your League monitored, took positions on and testified on a number of significant bills Maine Credit Union League 4 77th Annual Meeting & Convention Chairman & President’s Report important to Maine’s credit unions in the Maine Legislature. We had great success with all legislation on which we had an official position. During the 2014 Legislative session, your League spent a majority of our focus on a patent troll bill, legislation that was desperately needed due to the fact that patent trolls were filing unwarranted and frivolous patent claims against products and services at financial institutions, including credit unions. As a result of the financial impact that these claims were threatening to have on credit unions, we aggressively led the efforts to support proposed changes to put an end to unfounded patent claims and advocated strongly for its passage. Unfortunately, the legislation became entangled in the political tug-of-war that went well beyond the intent of the bill. Because we remained solely focused on the portion of the legislation that addressed our concerns and needs, we engaged an extensive grassroots effort to encourage legislators to pass the version of the bill that provided the relief we needed. Between emails and phone calls, credit unions delivered more than 1,000 contacts to legislators and the result was the successful passage of legislation that was sorely needed and sought by credit unions. The 2015 Legislative Session is well-underway and we are advocating and working on a number of issues; among them multiple foreclosure bills that are being debated, and your League is helping to craft support for these measures which would provide some slight, but important, changes that would positively impact the foreclosure process for credit unions without harming consumers. Since 2014 was an election year, we again led by example by endorsing candidates, working on campaigns and providing financial support to candidates at both the state and federal level. Often times, leadership is about making the difficult choices, not the most popular ones. As a result of our choices and our process to determine those choices, an overwhelming majority of our endorsed candidates were successful in their respective races. On the federal level, two of our three endorsed candidates were elected, while at the state level, we had an 85% success rate among the 89 legislative candidates that we endorsed in the Maine House and Senate. National Credit Union Administration to extend share insurance to trust accounts, such as Interest on Lawyer Trust Accounts (IOLTA) and other similar accounts, opened and managed by credit union members. Working with Senator Collins, we continue to seek legislation that would raise the cap on member business lending. Senator Collins continued to be a leader by again being a lead Republican co-sponsor on Member Business Loans (MBL) legislation; though, MBL legislation has not yet passed the Senate, Senator Collins remains firmly committed to supporting this legislation. We also utilized another opportunity to reinforce our grassroots strength with our response to NCUA’s risk-based capital proposal when more than two-thirds of Maine credit unions submitted comments on the proposal; ultimately, this feedback resulted in NCUA scrapping the original proposal and releasing a far more palatable revised proposal earlier this year. In addition to efforts on MBL legislation, we continue our work to ease the credit union regulatory burden as well as access to supplemental capital. Earlier this year, we again had a strong presence in Washington, D.C., at the Annual CUNA Governmental Affairs Conference, with nearly 75 Maine credit union officials attending. Our Delegation regularly praises your League for its frequent communications and participation in the legislative process as key components in producing successful legislative outcomes. While advocacy is certainly a critical part of our success, education is also an essential part of the equation. Without knowledge and training, the ability to lead and innovate is limited. Through our investment in resources, we are able to provide dynamic curriculum and training opportunities on topics that impact credit union staff, volunteers and operations. The result is a multi-channeled approach to training through the web, in-person and custom offerings. No one could certainly have envisioned the ways in which technology has changed the way training is delivered compared to only a few years ago. Recognizing the ways in which people wish to learn was changing, we invested in a webinar studio in our facility several years ago. The investment in web-based technology and resources enable us to offer far more trainings to credit unions across the state, especially when weather limits in-person offerings in the winter. More than 2,500 credit union staff, management and volunteers attended one of our offerings over the past year on a range of topics, such as compliance, operations, lending, regulatory changes, management, legislative issues and many more. In Washington, D.C., our resolve on regularly communicating and engaging our Congressional Delegation led to meaningful dialogue with our Delegation on credit union issues and brought a positive outcome for credit unions with the passage of the Credit Union Insurance Parity Act. This legislation came about, in part, from your League and Maine credit unions discussing the need for this legislation in several meetings with Senator King over the past two years. The Act, which was introduced by Senator King, creates deposit insurance parity for credit unions directing the Maine Credit Union League (Continued) When the League’s first Statewide Awareness Program began in the late 1960s, the primary method to reach consumers was 5 77th Annual Meeting & Convention Chairman & President’s Report through newspapers, television and radio. Nearly half a century later, while those media are still effective and utilized to varying degrees, online and event advertising have become significant parts of the landscape. Facebook, YouTube, Pandora and other channels to reach consumers are all part of your League’s advertising allotment. Our ability to develop an awareness campaign with messages that reflect the changing habits of consumers when it comes to getting news and entertainment has resulted in innovative and effective commercials that have spurred hundreds of daily visitors to our consumer-focused website at www.mainecreditunions.org, and, of course, played an important role in our record membership total. This year, we are again taking our vision and message that Maine’s credit unions provide the best choice and value for financial services to the airwaves and other forums in record numbers. With the launch of a new two-year, $1 million campaign, we will utilize a creative multi-channel approach including television, radio, online platform, event marketing and other avenues to solidify a strong presence in front of consumers. Our four-year investment in the Young & Free Maine Program continues to achieve impressive results. Since it began, this program, which brought our vision of engaging and capturing the next generation of credit union members to reality, has not only realized our expectations but has surpassed them. The free4ME account experienced a 28% account growth over the previous year, and growth with age 18-25 members increased a robust 4% over the past year. This unique approach to a previously difficult to reach demographic reinforces the success that can come by having a vision, a willingness to follow through on that vision by taking a certain level of risk, and an ability to think outside the box. With the continued leadership and support of our member credit unions, our fifth Young & Free Maine Spokester will be announced soon, and will embark on new endeavors and approaches to attract and capture younger members in record numbers. consumers. We have also begun to embrace the opportunities that new technology offers to deliver our message and expertise by sharing videos and resources on YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, to name a few. In 1990, while much of the attention on ending hunger was focused on other countries, Maine’s credit unions had the foresight to recognize that hunger was a problem that existed in our own state in every community. As a result of determination and leadership, the Maine Credit Union League’s Social Responsibility Committee initiated a statewide effort among our credit unions to raise funds for ending hunger. The campaign raised just under $25,000 that first year; however, the Committee and credit unions concluded that this was a chronic problem in Maine and deserved our attention for the long haul. This resulted in the formation of the Maine Credit Unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger. Twenty-five years after the first total was announced, this past February we witnessed first-hand how far these collective efforts have come when we announced that a record-setting $552,257 was raised, bringing the total raised in the Campaign’s 25-year history to $5.9 million. The Campaign’s success can be attributed, in part, to strong leadership and commitment on the part of credit unions and members dedicated to the ‘people helping people’ philosophy that has been a hallmark of Maine’s credit unions since the beginning. We can all be proud of the fact that we were among the first organizations in Maine to acknowledge that hunger was a problem in Maine, and commit significant time and money to making a difference long before it was well-publicized. Last fall, we also continued our unprecedented focus on childhood hunger in Maine by making the second installment of a threeyear, $75,000 commitment to the Good Shepherd Food Bank’s School Backpack and School Pantry Program. The Backpack Program provides food to children to utilize on weekends and school vacations when access to food programs is not available. The School Food Pantry provides food to children facing hunger, as well as their families, from a school-based food pantry. Combined, both programs now serve more than 1,500 children weekly, and provide nearly 100,000 meals a month to the one in four Maine children who are food insecure. Much like our support of bringing the first ‘Food Mobile’ to Maine back in 2005, we hope our leadership will encourage others to make similar commitments to help Maine children who are food insecure. During the past year, Maine credit unions also lent support to other programs such as the Maine Children’s Cancer Program, Special Olympics, Children’s Miracle Network, and financial literacy. Many years ago, we envisioned a day when the League and Maine’s credit unions would be viewed by the media as experts in the financial services industry, and looked to as a leading source of information on consumer financial services topics. Thanks to increased awareness, unmatched responsiveness and significant outreach, we have realized that vision and are called upon by the media on a regular basis to provide feedback and as a resource on topics, such as data breaches, EMV implementation, lending trends, cyber security, saving money, financial education, elder abuse and the popularity of co-ops in Maine. It is gratifying to be respected by television stations, newspaper reporters and radio stations for our perspective on issues that are important to Maine Credit Union League (Continued) 6 77th Annual Meeting & Convention Chairman & President’s Report Success in the marketplace does not just happen overnight; it takes lots of hard work, cooperation and innovation. The Maine Credit Union League is an owner in and involved with two CUSOs (Credit Union Service Organizations) in Maine (Synergent and CUSO Home Lending) that are testaments to the success that can be achieved when there is a vision on how the future can be. When Synergent was formed in 1971, the concept of a League operating a service subsidiary was in its infancy. Over time, Synergent has created opportunities that have enabled credit unions to not only compete but, in many cases, be on the cutting-edge in technology, convenience and member service. Examples of the benefits of this relationship include core processing services, mobile check capture, instant issue ATM/ Debit cards, the Shared Branch Network with 170 locations in Maine and more than 5,400 nationwide to create the third largest branch network in all of financial services, the SURF Network with nearly 240 surcharge-free ATMs in Maine, the largest in the state, and other products and services which include online account opening, mortgage applications, personal finance tools and many more. Recognizing that the payments environment is changing, Synergent recently brought Card Services and Check Processing together under one division to the newlynamed Payment Services Division. The integration of these two, previously separate divisions, will enable us to be proactive and aggressive in meeting the challenges and embracing the opportunities that the changing payments landscape will offer to credit unions. Perhaps, there has been no better recent example of where Synergent has been more of a leader than on EMV and Apple Pay. The adaptation of EMV chips in debit and credit cards is fueling plenty of questions; however, Synergent Card Services has been providing regular communications and updates on this process in advance of the October 2015 implementation deadline. Credit unions are making good progress on EMV adoption, and we are well-positioned to help members through this process. Tokenization and the mobile wallet are changing the payment services industry, and with guidance and expertise from Synergent and our partners, we are positioned to ensure that credit unions will be a top-of-wallet leader rather than a follower. We have created a Payments Task Force and engaged outside experts to help remain at the forefront of this rapidlychanging payments environment. While printing, designing and creating are still core parts of Direct Marketing Services, words like onboarding, e-marketing and data mining have now become part of the vernacular and, thanks to the early adoption Maine Credit Union League (Continued) and innovation of Direct Marketing Services, credit unions are utilizing these new tools for targeted and creative marketing already with solid success. In the early 1990s, when the housing market was struggling and many credit unions had limited experience in the mortgage market, CUSO Home Lending was formed, with support from your League and a number of Maine credit unions. While refinancing fueled record growth for CUSO Home Lending in 2013, the ability of CUSO Home Lending to transition to the purchase market made 2014 another strong year, despite the near evaporation of the refinancing market. With strong products, including the extremely popular CU Promise Loan, CUSO Home Lending supports a Maine-based servicing operation portfolio of over $1.2 billion, and is a leader in the Maine mortgage lending marketplace. In closing, we envision an environment where credit unions are the primary financial institution for the majority of Maine consumers. We continue to lead in paving the way for an even stronger credit union environment for future generations of credit union leaders and members. We will succeed in delivering credit union members the latest technology-based products and services, and the most competitive overall offering that not-forprofit financial cooperatives can offer. We extend our sincere gratitude and appreciation to you, our member owners, our Board and committees, and our dedicated staff and management for all your support and assistance throughout the year. Respectfully submitted, James Lemieux Chairman John G. Murphy President/CEO 7 77th Annual Meeting & Convention Keynote Speakers Scott Burrows presents a riveting story of overcoming incredible physical, personal and professional challenges through sheer determination, willpower and goal setting. He will encourage our audience to STAND UP to their own challenges regardless of circumstances. A star athlete and fierce competitor, Scott played college football at Florida State University under legendary coach Bobby Bowden and was a topranked kick boxing champion whose last fight was broadcast by ESPN. On November 3, 1984, a serious automobile accident left him paralyzed from the chest down and diagnosed a quadriplegic. Despite his grim diagnosis, Scott refused to be sidelined! He took control of his life by implementing three powerful principles: VISION, MINDSET and GRIT. Through painstaking focus and unshakable optimism, Scott boosted his recovery and achieved seemingly unattainable results that astonished doctors, therapists, family and friends alike! SCOTT BURROWS Using his physical paralysis as a visual metaphor, Scott shows how to drive personal and business results by maintaining poise and execution. His experience will engage you, change your thinking and provide a solid plan to be more productive and passionate.
