Remember our First
Sunday Meeting for September will be the 9th. Also
keep in mind that we’ll be
riding to the meeting and
having a little BBQ
afterwards. August has
been a very busy
month. The weather
has been spectacular
and our members have
been out taking advantage. I know several made the trip to the
Sturgis Black Hills Rally and it sounded like
they had a great time.
Luz and I went on the
Custer’s Mayor Ride
and ended up in the middle
of a herd of Buffalo. She
wasn’t real happy and I tried
to stay at least 3 feet away
on either side. Couldn’t help
but notice a few of the other
bikes that wanted good pictures and pulled up close
enough to pet the critters.
Some people just don’t understand that not every animal is a pet. Some other
members made a run to New
Orleans and back. I think
they kept the face book
crowd up to date but I can’t
wait to hear the stories from
the trip. Last weekend was
the Skagit H-D Summer Party which was intended to
help raise awareness for the
Burned Children Recovery
Foundation. It was great to
have the old fire truck

HOT tips for the month.
The last several weeks we have seen higher than normal
temperatures not only in our area but across the state. So
what happens to our body when were riding in 85-105 degree weather. Can we become disoriented or dehydrated?
The answer is yes. Heat stroke or heat exhaustion can
sneak up on us if we don’t take precautions. We need to
take more breaks and drink more water. Did I mention
MORE WATER?? . Many of us like to ride with our coats
and chaps even in the hot weather. So it’s always a good
idea to remove those items when stopping to give your
body a chance to cool off.

The Burn Dance is set for Saturday, October 20th. Again, this will be a joint effort
with the Sedro-Woolley Fire Department
and NCHOG to raise money for the children’s Burn Camp. Auction items will be
needed and the wheelbarrows with goodies have always been crowd pleasers.
Food for the dance will be provided by a

was raised at this event.

Love and Respect
Many of you that have been around
for a while, know my Son Drew. Drew
will be 20 in November, he moved
out almost a year ago and has his
own company that repairs and maintains computers and networks for
companies and organizations. He
takes care of the four co-op stores in
Snohomish County and he has a couple of fire departments he maintains
too. He is also a volunteer firefighter
in Arlington Heights where he lives.
Since he moved out, I have gotten
smarter in his eyes. He not only asks
my opinions on things, he takes my
advice. How cool is that?
He and Jessica have been seeing each
other for almost 2 years now and recently they told us that they are getting married. Jessica has had her eye
on Drew since they met in 4-H when
they were 12 and 13.
I can’t tell you how excited I am for
the two of them because I believe
they could be married for 50 or 60
years. This kid has been pretty lucky
his whole life and I’ll be darned if he
didn’t do it again with Jessica.
He came over to the house a couple
of months ago to tell us that they
were getting married. I have to admit
that I wasn’t the least bit surprised.
He asked what I thought and I want
to tell you what I told him.
I told him there were three questions
I wanted to ask him and that I have
two books they needed to read. He
said OK. What are they?
Question #1: Do you like her as a
person? If you don’t like her as a
person, it will be difficult to work
through all of the issues that come
up in a marriage. You will always
love her but there will be times that
you may not like her all that much.
Question #2: Can you two talk
about everything? If you don’t have
the ability to talk through the issues,
you are going to lower your chances
of having a successful, long term relationship.
Question #3: Do you love her? You
may love her now but you will need
love and friendship and the ability to
talk openly with each other to make
that love blossom over time.
Of course he answered each one of
my questions in the positive but not
without thinking them through. I
wanted to give him more to think
about especially since by today’s
standards they are a bit young for
marriage.
Then he said, “What about the books
we need to read?”
I told him that they both needed to
stay in their bibles. They are both
Christians and that has formed the
basis for their relationship. Their
moral compasses are the same and
that is huge in creating a long lasting
marriage.
Book #1: The Five Love Languages
by Gary Chapman. Everyone accepts
love differently and Gary Chapman
has created an assessment for each
of us to take so we know our way of
accepting love. For example, Barb’s
love language is “Acts of service”. I
can tell her all day how much I love
her and appreciate her but if I do the
dishes or wash her car, wow! I have
hit exactly what she needs in the way
she needs it.
The book is a short read but take the
assessment in the back of the book
first. Or, go online to
www.5lovelanguages.com and take
the assessment there. If you haven’t
done it, do it now and have your
spouse do it too. Then put it into action and you will see results instantly.
Book #2: Love and Respect by Dr.
Emerson Eggerichs. The subtitle of
the book is, The love she most desires. The respect he desperately
needs. I met Dr. Eggerichs a year after his book came out. It was in a
seminar and he promised to tell us
the wording of a card that a woman
could write to her husband that
would make him melt. All the guys in
the room just said, “Sure, whatever.” At the conclusion of his talk he
told us the wording of the card and
he was dead on.
The women in
the room were
looking at the
men and asking,
“Is that it?. Is
he right?” All of
us just said.
Yep, he nailed
it.
I told Drew and Jessica that if they
worked through those two books,
they would give themselves the best
chance at something that most people don’t get, the opportunity to
build a whole life with someone that
you Love and Respect.
Before I even got part way through
my explanation of why this book was
crucial to the success of their marriage, he told me that Jessica’s Dad
had told him the same thing about
this book. Mitch had requested that
they both read this same book.
Drew and Jessica are getting married
on September 15th. They have their
whole lives ahead of them and they
get to do it with a partner at their
side that shares the same moral values and the same goal of only doing
the marriage thing once. Like all of
us, they will have good times and
bad. They will face some challenges
that will test the foundation their
marriage is built on. They will laugh
and they will cry. Together!
I hope you will join me by adding
Drew and Jessica to your prayers.
They are great people and like all of
us, they need the extra love and support that God brings to each and every one of us.

We finally have some good riding weather with more than
just one day at a time. I hope everyone has been able to
enjoy some great rides. I know I have. Especially the last
few days being able to break in my new bike. By the time
you read this newsletter our State Rally, the Burn Run and
Sturgis Rally will be done. Now we will look ahead. We
have a ride on September 8th with Marge as the lead RC.
Rhonda and I will be with her. Marge will lead us up north
along the Canadian border through Sumas, Blaine and on
some back roads that some have not been on. We will
meet at Skagit Harley-Davidson and leave at 9:00 A.M. Be
fueled and ready to ride.
On September 16th come join Keith and Jan as they
get lost on their Skagit Valley Adventure trying to find a
Red Barn to turn left at. There’s a promise to have a
great ride and a good place to have lunch. We will meet
at Skagit Harley-Davidson. Be fueled and ready to ride.
September 23rd is the Oyster Run. An email will be sent
out to let us know places to meet so we can ride into
Anacortes together. Looking ahead to October 6th, we will
page 6
have two rides for you. Lloyd and Mark will be doing an
overnight ride, and JB will be leading a ride going to Mt.
Baker. On October 21st Allen and Jan will lead the TSR. I
thought I heard a mention of Lutefisk. There will be more
details on these rides later. Please note all these rides on
your calendar and if possible come and support your
RC’S.

What a great issue last month. "A
Salute to Women Who Ride".
The ladies who paved the way for
us today. Thanks Mike and Linda.
"We've Come A long Way Baby",
as the saying goes. Thanks ladies for making our LOH meetings a success. July's meeting
we had 15 ladies and 14 guests.
Thank you to Elaine for taking over for
me at the August meeting. Missed seeing you all! Two of our guests included
Joan White and LuAnn Rogers who
are involved in this year’s LOH Summit. They were kind enough to join us
and give us an update on this year’s
LOH Summit. If you ladies don't know,
our LOH Summit will be in our own
backyard. It is being held at the Best
Western Lakeway Inn and Convention
Center, Bellingham, WA. Sept. 21 &
22, 2012. They were able to present us
with a rough draft on the itinerary. Being as this is Oyster Run weekend,
they will be getting us out of there early
Sunday morning. Again this year they
will be asking us to bring a basket to
raffle off. They are asking if we could
fill it with local items, representing the
different areas our ladies are from. If
any of you have items to donate, bring
to our Sept. meeting, or you can always get a hold of me (Katie) or Elaine
Katie
and

for a pick up.
Sept. 16th is "Women Riding For
Women". This ride benefits Domestic
Violence and Assault Services. Registration begins at 8:00am, (Hometown
Cafe) in Sedro Woolley. Last bike out
is at 10:00am. After the ride there will
be a barbecue at Steelhead Park,
Sedro-Woolley.
Our LOH Roster seems to be growing
every month. Denise Mathews is the
newest addition. She recently signed
up at Skagit Harley-Davidson’s Anniversary party.
Briess Potter is an official HOG associate member. This was her birthday
gift from parents Carrie and Lloyd.
Happy 16th Birthday Briess!
August we have many ladies with
birthdays. Join us and pick something
from our "Birthday Bucket". We also
have a raffle prize every month with
something special for one of our LOH
members. July's winner was our
own Sandi Castano.
Ladies of Harley (LOH) is for
women who love to ride their own
bikes or two-up. Any woman who
is a H.O.G. member is welcome
to join us.
We support our local dealership
Skagit Harley-Davidson, as well
as our local chapter (NCHOG).
We have activities during the year and
some charity fund-raising.
It is fun to get together with women
and share our love of riding and other
interests.
Our next LOH meeting will be Sept.
18th. All of our meetings for this year
will be held at Bob's Burger and Brew.
Located in Burlington off I-5 (Cook Rd.
exit ) The meetings are held in the
back room and start at 6:30. You are
welcome to come early for dinner and
good conversation. As always guests,
spouses and significant others are welcome.
As always, we look forward to seeing
you all :)
