Also keep in mind that we’ll be riding to the meeting and having a little BBQ afterwards. August has been a very busy month. The weather has been spectacular and our members have been out taking advantage. I know several made the trip to the Sturgis Black Hills Rally and it sounded like they had a great time. Luz and I went on the Custer’s Mayor Ride and ended up in the middle of a herd of Buffalo. She wasn’t real happy and I tried to stay at least 3 feet away on either side. Couldn’t help but notice a few of the other bikes that wanted good pictures and pulled up close enough to pet the critters. Some people just don’t understand that not every animal is a pet. Some other members made a run to New Orleans and back. I think they kept the face book crowd up to date but I can’t wait to hear the stories from the trip. Last weekend was the Skagit H-D Summer Party which was intended to help raise awareness for the Burned Children Recovery Foundation. It was great to have the old fire truck parked out in front and I know enough money was tossed in the boot to cover provided all riders with a great looking patch for Camp Phoenix. Once I get this sent off to Kathy, it’ll be time to head for Okanogan for the State Rally. We have over 30 members attending so it’s going to be a great time. I’ve heard that Ken Lee’s leg is on the mend. I haven’t spoken with him yet but Jan assures me the North Coast Chapter was in immediate contact and that Ken was in the cost of diesel to drive it good spirits and doing well. down. Thanks to Shane EarWhat’s happening good, Mark Van Oort and this month? The officers Chet for helping out with meeting will be on the parking. The Burn Run was 4th,which is also the HOG the next day and was a little discount day. The FSR is on different this year going to a the 8th and our FSM is the new camp plus having the 9th. As usual, it’s one of those, you had HOT tips for the month. The last several weeks we have seen higher than normal temperatures not only in our area but across the state. So what happens to our body when were riding in 85-105 degree weather. Can we become disoriented or dehydrated? The answer is yes. Heat stroke or heat exhaustion can sneak up on us if we don’t take precautions. We need to take more breaks and drink more water. Did I mention MORE WATER?? . Many of us like to ride with our coats and chaps even in the hot weather. So it’s always a good idea to remove those items when stopping to give your body a chance to cool off. Things to consider in very hot weather. 1) 2) 3) 4) 5) 6) to be there, to comprehend the rationale for these bloopers. Auction items will be needed and the wheelbarrows with goodies have always been crowd pleasers. Food for the dance will be provided by a local restaurant. Last year almost $20,000 was raised at this event. Sandi Castano has volunteered to take over ordering and selling patches for NCHOG. Press / on line at www.nchog.com page 5 By: Howard Bono Love and Respect Many of you that have been around for a while, know my Son Drew. Drew will be 20 in November, he moved out almost a year ago and has his own company that repairs and maintains computers and networks for companies and organizations. He takes care of the four co-op stores in Snohomish County and he has a couple of fire departments he maintains too. He is also a volunteer firefighter in Arlington Heights where he lives. Since he moved out, I have gotten smarter in his eyes. He not only asks my opinions on things, he takes my advice. How cool is that? He and Jessica have been seeing each other for almost 2 years now and recently they told us that they are getting married. Jessica has had her eye on Drew since they met in 4-H when they were 12 and 13. I can’t tell you how excited I am for the two of them because I believe they could be married for 50 or 60 years. This kid has been pretty lucky his whole life and I’ll be darned if he didn’t do it again with Jessica. He came over to the house a couple of months ago to tell us that they were getting married. I have to admit that I wasn’t the least bit surprised. He asked what I thought and I want to tell you what I told him. I told him there were three questions I wanted to ask him and that I have two books they needed to read. He said OK. What are they? Question #1: Do you like her as a person? If you don’t like her as a person, it will be difficult to work through all of the issues that come up in a marriage. You will always love her but there will be times that you may not like her all that much. Question #2: Can you two talk about everything? If you don’t have the ability to talk through the issues, you are going to lower your chances of having a successful, long term relationship. Question #3: Do you love her? You may love her now but you will need love and friendship and the ability to talk openly with each other to make that love blossom over time. Of course he answered each one of my questions in the positive but not without thinking them through. I wanted to give him more to think about especially since by today’s standards they are a bit young for marriage. Then he said, “What about the books we need to read?” I told him that they both needed to stay in their bibles. They are both Christians and that has formed the basis for their relationship. Their moral compasses are the same and that is huge in creating a long lasting marriage. Book #1: The Five Love Languages by Gary Chapman. Everyone accepts love differently and Gary Chapman has created an assessment for each of us to take so we know our way of accepting love. For example, Barb’s love language is “Acts of service”. I can tell her all day how much I love her and appreciate her but if I do the dishes or wash her car, wow! I have hit exactly what she needs in the way she needs it. The book is a short read but take the assessment in the back of the book first. Or, go online to www.5lovelanguages.com and take the assessment there. If you haven’t done it, do it now and have your spouse do it too. Then put it into action and you will see results instantly. Book #2: Love and Respect by Dr. Emerson Eggerichs. The subtitle of the book is, The love she most desires. The respect he desperately needs. I met Dr. Eggerichs a year after his book came out. It was in a seminar and he promised to tell us the wording of a card that a woman could write to her husband that would make him melt. All the guys in the room just said, “Sure, whatever.” At the conclusion of his talk he told us the wording of the card and he was dead on. The women in the room were looking at the men and asking, “Is that it?. Is he right?” All of us just said. Yep, he nailed it. I told Drew and Jessica that if they worked through those two books, they would give themselves the best chance at something that most people don’t get, the opportunity to build a whole life with someone that you Love and Respect. Before I even got part way through my explanation of why this book was crucial to the success of their marriage, he told me that Jessica’s Dad had told him the same thing about this book. Mitch had requested that they both read this same book. Drew and Jessica are getting married on September 15th. They have their whole lives ahead of them and they get to do it with a partner at their side that shares the same moral values and the same goal of only doing the marriage thing once. Like all of us, they will have good times and bad. They will face some challenges that will test the foundation their marriage is built on. They will laugh and they will cry. Together! I hope you will join me by adding Drew and Jessica to your prayers. They are great people and like all of us, they need the extra love and support that God brings to each and every one of us.
