prophecy
(Luke 1:1-4; 4:14-21).
LIVING AS THE BODY OF
CHRIST
Some of Saint Paul’s best
known and most beloved imagery
is contained in the passages from
First Corinthians that we have
heard last week and this week: the
many gifts granted by the one
same Spirit and the many
members making up the one Body
of Christ. Few passages from
sacred scripture more accurately
sum up how Christian vocations
work together.
Unlike some of Paul’s other
writings, which are a product of
the social and religious
conventions of his time, these
enable us to look at our own lives
and the lives of those around us to
discern what gifts, what vocations
the Holy Spirit has given for the
good of all. We can likewise know
the joys and sorrows of the other
members of the Body and share in
them for the strengthening of the
whole Body of Christ.

Year of Mercy – St. Gertrude Parish Mass
Seminary of the Immaculate Conception, Huntington
Saturday, February 13th @ 4pm
“With gratitude to the Holy Father for this initiative, I invite us all to set out on a
pilgrimage of mercy here in our diocese.” ~Bishop Murphy
Celebrate the Year of Mercy with Mass at the Seminary
and an opportunity to walk through the Holy Door.*
While there is no fee for this event please
RSVP ([email protected] or 628-2432)
by February 8th so we know how many to expect.
*Please note that there are quite a few steps
leading to the Holy Door.
As with other jubilee years, the Holy Father has instructed that special indulgences be available for
the faithful through the duration of the Year of Mercy. Here is how to receive one:
• Make a pilgrimage. Make a journey to one of the four Holy Doors in the diocese or one of the
four Holy Doors in the four papal basilicas in Rome. Crossing through the Holy Door is a spiritual
journey that signals, as the Holy Father said, “the deep desire for true confession.”
• Go to Confession.
• Receive the Holy Eucharist “with a reflection of mercy.”
• Make a profession of faith.
• Pray for the pope and for his intentions.

four year old class made some pasta snowflakes and studied the parts of plants this week, wishing they
could be outdoors to plant. They also studied the letter P. The Rosary Guild Scholarship application

The IRA Charitable Rollover
is back and is now
permanent!
What’s called a rollover is actually a “qualified charitable distribution” that can be made
to our Parish.
If…
You are at least 70 1/2 years old on the date you make your gift
Your IRA is a traditional or Roth
You don’t exceed your personal maximum of $100,000 per year in qualified charitable distributions
You will not have to report your distribution as income. It will be free of federal and New
York State income tax, and it will count toward your required minimum distribution
(RMD).
The best way for you to start is with your IRA custodian. Tell them you want to make a "qualified
charitable distribution". In most cases you will only have to fill out a simple form.
VERY IMPORTANT!! Your gift must go directly from your IRA to the Parish. If you receive
the money first then you’ll be taxed on it like any other distribution.
Example: Mrs. Connors, age 76, has $125,000 in a traditional IRA and would like to contribute
$5,000 to her Parish in 2016. Upon hearing of the Charitable IRA Rollover opportunity, she directs
the custodian of her IRA to transfer this amount not later than December 31, 2016 directly to the
Parish as a 2016 gift. She will not be subject to income tax on her $5,000 qualified charitable
distribution.
This information is not intended and should not be construed as legal, tax or investment advice. For such advice, please consult an attorney,
tax advisor or investment professional.
Wills and Bequests have the power to impact future generations. It’s so easy to
include our Parish in your Will and still provide for loved ones. You may be able to make a simple bequest
by adding the following language:
“I give and bequeath the sum of $ _________ (or the % of), to be used for the general
program of St. Gertrude Parish, a Catholic Church in the Diocese of Rockville Centre.”
Ensure the future vitality of our Parish with your charitable
bequest or consider other Estate Planning options,
such as designating our Parish as beneficiary of a
life insurance policy or an IRA account.
To receive a brochure about Wills and Bequests, please call Barbara Kilarjian at 516-379-5210 ext.

Giuliani, has been conducted in the diocese for the past 41 years for the convenience of parishioners. It is

parish or diocese. Most insurance policies, including Medicare, are honored. For confidential information
